Abstract:Solving the Schrödinger equation directly, we study the characteristics of tunnel current on a quantum wedge. We obtain theoretical curves for the tunnel current which agree with experiment results better than those obtained using the penetration coefficient formula with an arbitrary potential.

Abstract:Tunneling, transport of particles through classically forbidden regions, is a pure quantum phenomenon. It governs numerous phenomena ranging from single-molecule electronics to donor-acceptor transition reactions. The main problem is the absence of a universal method to compute tunneling time. This problem has been attacked in various ways in the literature. Here, in the present work, we show that a statistical approach to the problem, motivated by the imaginary nature of time in the forbidden regions, lead to a novel tunneling time formula which is real and subluminal (in contrast to various known time definitions implying superluminal tunneling). This entropic tunneling time, as we call it, shows good agreement with the tunneling time measurements in laser-driven He ionization. Moreover, it sets an accurate range for long-range electron transfer reactions. The entropic tunneling time is general enough to extend to the photon and phonon tunneling phenomena.

Abstract:In this paper we study the tunneling using a background independent (polymer) quantization scheme. We show that at low energies, for the tunneling through a single potential barrier, the polymer transmission coefficient and the polymer tunneling time converge to its quantum-mechanical counterparts in a clear fashion. As the energy approaches the maximum these polymer quantities abruptly decrease to zero. We use the transfer matrix method to study the tunneling through a series of identical potential barriers. We obtain that the transmission coefficients (polymer and quantum-mechanical) behave qualitatively in a similar manner, as expected. Finally we show that the polymer tunneling time exhibits anomalous peaks compared with the standard result. Numerical results are also presented.

Abstract:Abstract Tunneling is an outstanding physical process. The observation that particles surmount a high barrier in spite of the fact that they don't have the necessary energy can not be explained by classical physics. However, this so called tunneling became allowed by quantum mechanics. Experimental tunneling studies with different photonic barriers from microwave frequencies up to ultraviolet frequencies point towards a universal tunneling time [1, 2]. Tunneling can be described by virtual, that is, by unobservable particles [3]. In the case of tunneling there is a virtual particle between the real incident and the real transmitted particles. Tunneling modes are solutions of the Schrödinger and of the Helmholtz equations. The most prominent example of the occurrence of tunneling modes in optics is frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) at double prisms. In 1949 Sommerfeld [4] pointed out that this optical phenomenon represents the analogy of quantum mechanical particle tunneling. Recent experimental and theoretical data confirmed the conjecture that the tunneling process is characterized by a universal tunneling time presumably independent of the kind of field. The observed tunneling processes proceeded at a time of the order of magnitude of the reciprocal frequency of the wave packets.

Abstract:Numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation based on the variational principle may offer physical insight that cannot be gained by a solution using fixed grids in position and momentum space. Here we focus on the tunneling dynamics in a quartic double-well and the use of classical, trajectory-guided coherent states to gain insight into the workings of the coupled coherent states method developed by Shalashilin and Child [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 113}, 10028 (2000)]. It is shown that over-the-barrier classical trajectories, alone, can accurately describe the tunneling effect.

Abstract:We discuss new possible tunneling processes in the presence of gravity. We formulate quantum tunneling using the Wheeler-deWitt canonical quantization and the WKB approximation. The distinctive feature of our formulation is that it accommodates the coexistence of Euclidean and Lorentzian evolution. It opens up a new possibility of quantum tunneling; e.g. a bubble wall itself tunnels the potential barrier pulling the field nearby, where the wall region experiences the Euclidean evolution while the other regions experience the Lorentzian evolution simultaneously. We execute numerical analysis and find that such a process can have a much higher tunneling rate than that of the Coleman-De Luccia bounce. A General Scenario of Tunneling Time in Different Energy Regimes

Abstract:We theoretically study the tunneling time by investigating a wave packet of Bose-condensed atoms passing through a square barrier. We find that the tunneling time exhibits different scaling laws in different energy regimes. For negative incident energy of the wave packet, counterintuitively, the tunneling time decreases very rapidly with decreasing incident velocity. In contrast, for positive incident energy smaller than the barrier height, the tunneling time increases slowly and then reaches a maximum, which is in agreement with the Larmor clock experiments. The effect of the barrier width related to the uncertainty principle on the maximum tunneling time is also addressed. Our work provides a general scenario of tunneling time that can be used to understand and explain the controversy over tunneling time.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of partial and full tunneling processes to explain the seemingly contradictory non-zero and vanishing tunneling times often reported in the literature. Our analysis starts by considering the traversal time of a quantum particle through a potential barrier, including both above and below-barrier traversals, using the theory of time-of-arrival operators. We then show that there are three traversal processes corresponding to non-tunneling, full-tunneling, and partial tunneling. The distinction between the three depends on the support of the incident wavepackets energy distribution in relation to the shape of the barrier. Non-tunneling happens when the energy distribution of the quantum particle lies above the maximum of the potential barrier. Otherwise, full-tunneling process occurs when the energy distribution of the particle is below the minimum of the potential barrier. For this process, the obtained traversal time is interpreted as the tunneling time. Finally, the partial-tunneling process occurs when the energy distribution lies between the minimum and maximum of the potential barrier. This signifies that the quantum particle tunneled only through some portions of the potential barrier. We argue that the duration for a partial-tunneling process should not be interpreted as the tunneling time but instead as a partial traversal time to differentiate it from the full-tunneling process. We then show that a full-tunneling process is always instantaneous, while a partial-tunneling process takes a non-zero amount of time. We are then led to the hypothesis that experimentally measured non-zero and vanishing tunneling times correspond to partial and full-tunneling processes, respectively.

In the nineties analogous tunneling experiments with microwaves were carried out. The results agreed with quantum mechanical calculations. Electron tunneling time is hard to measure being extremely short and parasitic effects due to the electric charge of electrons may be dominant. However, quite recently the atomic ionization tunneling time has been measured. Experimental data of photonic, phononic, and electronic tunneling time is available now and will be presented. It appears that the tunneling time is a universal property independent of the field in question.

Abstract:Tunneling Through with a Light Touch Quantum tunneling underpins a host of essential techniques, such as scanning tunneling microscopy and quantum cascade lasers, as well as chemical reactions. The tunneling particles are normally electrons, and control of the tunneling process has generally been by electric fields. By coupling tunneling electrons with cavity photons trapped inside a semiconductor microcavity, Cristofolini et al. (p. 704 , published online 5 April; see the Perspective by Szymańska ) produced mixed states that then allowed direct optical control of the tunneling process. Such an optical-based approach to manipulating and controlling the tunneling process may find applications in quantum information science.

Abstract:A numerical analysis of an electron waveguide coupler based on two quantum wires coupled by a magnetically defined barrier is presented with the use of the scattering-matrix method. For different geometry parameters and magnetic fields, tunneling transmission spectrum is obtained as a function of the electron energy. Different from that of conventional electron waveguide couplers, the transmission spectrum of the magnetically coupled quantum wires does not have the symmetry with regard to those geometrically symmetrical ports, It was found that the magnetic field in the coupling region drastically enhances the coupling between the two quantum wires for one specific input port while it weakens the coupling for the other input port. The results can be well understood by the formation of the edge states in the magnetically defined barrier region. Thus, whether these edge states couple or decouple to the electronic propagation modes in the two quantum wires, strongly depend on the relative moving directions of electrons in the propagating mode in the input port and the edge states in the magnetic region. This leads to a big difference in transmission coefficients between two quantum wires when injecting electrons via different input ports. Two important coupler specifications, the directivity and uniformity, are calculated which show that the system we considered behaves as a good quantum directional coupler. Abstract:We present a simple model of composite particle tunnelling through a potential barrier in presence of a (pseudo)magnetic field. The exact numerical solution of the problem is provided and the applicability to real physical systems is discussed. When the magnetic field is present some new qualitative features of the transmission spectrum are observed, compared to the previously studied composite particle tunnelling with no magnetic field. Splitting of energy levels in a magnetic field leads to splitting of transmission probability resonances, which are a generic feature of composite particle tunnelling. Magnetic field also induces precession of spin on the Bloch sphere, that can be used as a Larmor clock for measuring tunnelling time.

Quantum tunneling from excited states: Recovering imaginary-time instantons from a real-time analysis

Abstract:We revisit the path integral description of quantum tunneling and show how it can be generalized to excited states. For clarity, we focus on the simple toy model of a point particle in a double-well potential, for which we perform all steps explicitly. Instead of performing the familiar Wick rotation from physical to imaginary time - which is inconsistent with the requisite boundary conditions when treating tunneling from excited states - we regularize the path integral by adding an infinitesimal complex contribution to the Hamiltonian, while keeping time strictly real. We find that this gives rise to a complex stationary-phase solution, in agreement with recent insights from Picard-Lefshitz theory. We then show that there exists a class of analytic solutions for the corresponding equations of motion, which can be made to match the appropriate boundary conditions in the physically relevant limits of a vanishing regulator and an infinite physical time. We provide a detailed discussion of this non-trivial limit. We find that, for systems without an explicit time-dependence, our approach reproduces the picture of an instanton-like solution defined on a finite Euclidean-time interval. Lastly, we discuss the generalization of our approach to broader classes of systems, for which it serves as a reliable framework for high-precision calculations.

Abstract:We study the tunneling dynamics and energy bands of three Bose-Einstein condensates which are coupled weakly with each other. The study is carried out with both the mean-filed model and the second-quantized model. The results from these two models are compared and found to agree with each other when the particle number is large. Without interaction, this system possesses a Dirac point in its energy band. This Dirac point is immediately destroyed and develops into a loop structure with arbitrary small interaction. This loop structure has a strong effect on the tunneling dynamics. We find that the tunneling dynamics in this system is very sensitive to the system parameter, e.g., the interaction strength. This sensitivity is found to be caused by the chaos in the mean-field model and the avoided energy crossings with tiny gaps in the second-quantized model. This result gives a certain indication on how the classical dynamics and quantum dynamics are connected in the semi-classical limit. Our mean-field results are also valid for three mutually coupled optical nonlinear waveguides.
Long-Range Quantum Tunneling via Matter Wave

Abstract:Quantum tunneling refers to a phenomenon that a microscopic object can pass through a potential barrier even it does not have enough energy to overcome the barrier. It has led to many modern applications and nanotechnologies. A general belief is that quantum tunneling, as a manifestation of the wave-particle duality, occurs only when the width of the barrier is comparable to or smaller than the de Broglie's wavelength of the object. Here, via studying the tunneling of an ultracold atom among $N$ far-separated trapping potentials in a state-selective optical lattice, we discover a mechanism to realize a long-range quantum tunneling. It is found that, by the mediation role of the propagating matter wave emitted from the excited-state atom, a coherent tunneling of the tightly confined atom to the remote trapping potentials can occur as long as bound states are present in the energy spectrum of the total system formed by the atom and its matter wave. Breaking through the generally believed distance constraint of quantum tunneling, our result opens another avenue to realize quantum tunneling and gives a guideline to develop tunneling devices.

Abstract:We develop a theory of tunneling between two systems of spinless chiral fermions. This setup can be realized at the edge of a quantum Hall bilayer structure. We find that the differential conductance of such a device in the absence of interactions has an infinitely sharp peak as a function of applied voltage. Interaction between fermions results in broadening of the conductance peak. We focus on the regime of strong interactions, in which the shape of the peak manifests well defined features associated with the elementary excitations of the system.

Tunneling current and current correlations for anyonic quasiparticles of ν = 1/2 chiral Luttinger liquid in multi-edge geometries

Abstract:We consider anyonic quasiparticles with charge e/2 described by the {\nu} = 1/2 chiral Luttinger liquid, which collide in a Hong-Ou-Mandel-like interferometer. These colliding anyonic channels can be formally viewed as hosting Laughlin-like fractional {\nu} = 1/2 quasiparticles. More specifically, two possible geometries are considered: (i) a two-edge-channel setup where anyons originate from equilibrium reservoirs; (ii) a four-edge-channel setup where nonequilibrium anyons arrive at the collider in the form of diluted beams. For both setups, we calculate the tunneling current and the current correlations. For setup (i), our results provide analytically exact expressions for the tunneling current, tunneling-current noise, and cross-correlation noise, The exact relation between conductance and noise is demonstrated. For setup (ii), we show that the tunneling current and the generalized Fano factor [defined in B. Rosenow et al. (2016)] are finite for diluted streams of {\nu} = 1/2 anyons. This is due to the processes where nonequilibrium anyons, supplied via either source edge, directly tunnel at the central QPC. Thus, to obtain meaningful results in this case, one should go beyond the so-called time-domain braiding processes, where nonequilibrium anyons do not tunnel at the collider, but rather indirectly influence the tunneling by braiding with the quasiparticle-quasihole pairs created at the collider. This suggests that the effect of direct tunneling and collisions of diluted anyons in the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer can be important for various observables in physical quantum-Hall edges at Laughlin filling fractions.

Abstract:Given the key role that quantum tunneling plays in a wide range of applications, a crucial objective is to maximize the probability of tunneling from one quantum state/level to another, while keeping the resources of the underlying physical system fixed. In this work, we demonstrate that an effective solution to this challenge can be achieved by coupling the tunneling system with an ancillary system of the same kind. By utilizing machine learning techniques, the parameters of both the ancillary system and the coupling can be optimized, leading to the maximization of the tunneling probability. We provide illustrative examples for the paradigmatic scenario involving a two-mode system and a two-mode ancilla with arbitrary couplings and in the presence of several interacting particles. Importantly, the enhancement of the tunneling probability appears to be minimally affected by noise and decoherence in both the system and the ancilla.
