Abstract:We provide a careful analysis of the structure theorem for the $n$-qudit projective Clifford group and various encoding schemes for its elements. In particular, we derive formulas for evaluation, composition, and inversion. Our results apply to all integers $d\geq2$, most notably the even case.

Abstract:In this paper, we resolve a conjecture of Green and Liebeck (2019) [3] on codes in PGL(2,q). To be specific, we show that: if D is a dihedral subgroup of order 2(q+1) in G=PGL(2,q), and A={g∈G:gq+1=1,g2≠1}, then λG=A⋅D, where λ=q or q−1 according as q is even or odd.
Qudit Quantum Programming with Projective Cliffords

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel abstraction for programming quantum operations, specifically projective Cliffords, as functions over the qudit Pauli group. We define a categorical semantics for projective Cliffords based on Pauli encodings in terms of $\mathbb{Z}_d$-linear maps. We then introduce a type system and lambda calculus for both $\mathbb{Z}_d$-linear maps and projective Cliffords, and prove that these type systems have a sound denotational semantics in terms of the relevant categories. Finally, we explore what it means to program with projective Cliffords through a number of examples and programming constructions.

Abstract:Let H be a finite dimensional Hopf algebra and A be an algebra over a fixed field k. Firstly, it is proved that the left FP-projective dimension is invariant under cleft extensions when H is semisimple and A is left coherent. Secondly, using (co)induction functors, we study the relations between FP-projective dimensions in A#H-Mod and the counterparts in A(H)-Mod. Finally, we characterize the FP-projective preenvelopes (resp., precovers) under H*-extensions and cleft extensions, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, over a field k, we give the structure theorem of the quantum double of a finite Clifford monoid through bicrossed products and quantum doubles of groups. By this result, it is shown that the quantum double of a finite Clifford monoid is semisimple (resp. von Neumann regular) if and only if the semigroup is a finite group and the characteristic p of k does not divide the order of this group.

Abstract:Nebe, Rains and Sloane studied the polynomial invariants for real and complex Clifford groups and they give a new conceptual proof that these invariants are spanned by the set of complete weight enumerators of certain self-dual codes, which was first proved by Runge using modular forms. The purpose of this paper is to show that very similar results can be obtained for the invariants of the complex Clifford group X-m acting on the space of conjugate polynomials in 2(m) variables of degree N-1 in x(f) and of degree N-2 in their complex conjugates (x(f)) over bar. In particular, we show that the dimension of this space is 2, for (N-1, N-2)=(5,5). This solves affirmatively Conjecture 2 given by Zhu, Kueng, Grassl and Gross. In other words if an orbit of the complex Clifford group is a projective 4-design, then it is automatically a projective 5-design.
Duality theory for Clifford tensor powers

Abstract:The representation theory of the Clifford group is playing an increasingly prominent role in quantum information theory, including in such diverse use cases as the construction of protocols for quantum system certification, quantum simulation, and quantum cryptography. In these applications, the tensor powers of the defining representation seem particularly important. The representation theory of these tensor powers is understood in two regimes. 1. For odd qudits in the case where the power t is not larger than the number of systems n: Here, a duality theory between the Clifford group and certain discrete orthogonal groups can be used to make fairly explicit statements about the occurring irreps (this theory is related to Howe duality and the eta-correspondence). 2. For qubits: Tensor powers up to t=4 have been analyzed on a case-by-case basis. In this paper, we provide a unified framework for the duality approach that also covers qubit systems. To this end, we translate the notion of rank of symplectic representations to representations of the qubit Clifford group, and generalize the eta correspondence between symplectic and orthogonal groups to a correspondence between the Clifford and certain orthogonal-stochastic groups. As a sample application, we provide a protocol to efficiently implement the complex conjugate of a black-box Clifford unitary evolution.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct a permutation group of degree $2(4^n-1)$, which is isomorphic to the $n$-qubit projective Clifford group. To establish this result, we study the centralizers of the $z$ gate and the phase gate within the $n$-qubit projective Clifford group by employing the normal form of the Clifford operators.

Clifford Orbits from Cayley Graph Quotients

Abstract:We describe the structure of the $n$-qubit Clifford group $\mathcal{C}_n$ via Cayley graphs, whose vertices represent group elements and edges represent generators. In order to obtain the action of Clifford gates on a given quantum state, we introduce a quotient procedure. Quotienting the Cayley graph by the stabilizer subgroup of a state gives a reduced graph which depicts the state's Clifford orbit. Using this protocol for $\mathcal{C}_2$, we reproduce and generalize the reachability graphs introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2204.07593" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2204.07593">arXiv:2204.07593</a>. Since the procedure is state-independent, we extend our study to non-stabilizer states, including the W and Dicke states. Our new construction provides a more precise understanding of state evolution under Clifford circuit action.

Abstract:The $n$-qubit Pauli group and its normalizer the $n$-qubit Clifford group have applications in quantum error correction and device characterization. Recent applications have made use of the representation theory of the Clifford group. We apply the tools of (the coincidentally named) Clifford theory to examine the representation theory of the Clifford group using the much simpler representation theory of the Pauli group. We find an unexpected correspondence between irreducible characters of the $n$-qubit Clifford group and those of the $(n+1)$-qubit Clifford group.

Conformal Invariance of Clifford Monogenic Functions in the Indefinite Signature Case

Abstract:We extend constructions of classical Clifford analysis to the case of indefinite non-degenerate quadratic forms. Clifford analogues of complex holomorphic functions - called monogenic functions - are defined by means of the Dirac operators that factor a certain wave operator. One of the fundamental features of quaternionic analysis is the invariance of quaternionic analogues of holomorphic function under conformal (or Mobius) transformations. A similar invariance property is known to hold in the context of Clifford algebras associated to positive definite quadratic forms. We generalize these results to the case of Clifford algebras associated to all non-degenerate quadratic forms. This result puts the indefinite signature case on the same footing as the classical positive definite case.

Abstract:Qudits with local dimension $d>2$ can have unique structure and uses that qubits ($d=2$) cannot. Qudit Pauli operators provide a very useful basis of the space of qudit states and operators. We study the structure of the qudit Pauli group for any, including composite, $d$ in several ways. To cover composite values of $d$, we work with modules over commutative rings, which generalize the notion of vector spaces over fields. For any specified set of commutation relations, we construct a set of qudit Paulis satisfying those relations. We also study the maximum size of sets of Paulis that mutually non-commute and sets that non-commute in pairs. Finally, we give methods to find near minimal generating sets of Pauli subgroups, calculate the sizes of Pauli subgroups, and find bases of logical operators for qudit stabilizer codes. Useful tools in this study are normal forms from linear algebra over commutative rings, including the Smith normal form, alternating Smith normal form, and Howell normal form of matrices. Possible applications of this work include the construction and analysis of qudit stabilizer codes, entanglement assisted codes, parafermion codes, and fermionic Hamiltonian simulation.

Generators and Relations for 3-Qubit Clifford+CS Operators

Abstract:We give a presentation by generators and relations of the group of 3-qubit Clifford+CS operators. The proof roughly consists of two parts: (1) applying the Reidemeister-Schreier theorem recursively to an earlier result of ours; and (2) the simplification of thousands of relations into 17 relations. Both (1) and (2) have been formally verified in the proof assistant Agda. The Reidemeister-Schreier theorem gives a constructive method for computing a presentation of a sub-monoid given a presentation of the super-monoid. To achieve (2), we devise an almost-normal form for Clifford+CS operators. Along the way, we also identify several interesting structures within the Clifford+CS group. Specifically, we identify three different finite subgroups for whose elements we can give unique normal forms. We show that the 3-qubit Clifford+CS group, which is of course infinite, is the amalgamated product of these three finite subgroups. This result is analogous to the fact that the 1-qubit Clifford+T group is an amalgamated product of two finite subgroups.

Abstract:In 2023 we obtained a $Q$-polynomial structure for the projective geometry $L_N(q)$. In the present paper, we display a more general $Q$-polynomial structure for $L_N(q)$. Our new $Q$-polynomial structure is defined using a free parameter $\varphi$ that takes any positive real value. For $\varphi=1$ we recover the original $Q$-polynomial structure. We interpret the new $Q$-polynomial structure using the quantum group $U_{q^{1/2}}(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$ in the equitable presentation. We use the new $Q$-polynomial structure to obtain analogs of the four split decompositions that appear in the theory of $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs.

Abstract:Abstract The space of n distinct points and adisjoint parametrized hyperplane in projective d -space up to projectivity – equivalently, configurations of n distinct points in affine d -space up to translation and homothety – has a beautiful compactification introduced by Chen, Gibney and Krashen. This variety, constructed inductively using the apparatus of Fulton–MacPherson configuration spaces, is a parameter space of certain pointed rational varieties whose dual intersection complex is a rooted tree. This generalizes $\overline M _{0,n}$ and shares many properties with it. In this paper, we prove that the normalization of the Chow quotient of (P d ) n by the diagonal action of the subgroup of projectivities fixing a hyperplane, pointwise, is isomorphic to this Chen–Gibney–Krashen space T d, n . This is a non-reductive analogue of Kapranov's famous quotient construction of $\overline M _{0,n}$ , and indeed as a special case we show that $\overline M _{0,n}$ is the Chow quotient of (P 1 ) n −1 by an action of G m ⋊ G a .

Quantum error-correcting codes with a covariant encoding

Abstract:Given some group $G$ of logical gates, for instance the Clifford group, what are the quantum encodings for which these logical gates can be implemented by simple physical operations, described by some physical representation of $G$? We study this question by constructing a general form of such encoding maps. For instance, we recover that the $[[5,1,3]]$ and Steane codes admit transversal implementations of the binary tetrahedral and binary octahedral groups, respectively. For bosonic encodings, we show how to obtain the GKP and cat qudit encodings by considering the appropriate groups, and essentially the simplest physical implementations. We further illustrate this approach by introducing a 2-mode bosonic code defined from a constellation of 48 coherent states, for which all single-qubit Clifford gates correspond to passive Gaussian unitaries.

Abstract:We show how to use Clifford algebra techniques to describe the de Rham cohomology ring of equal rank compact symmetric spaces $G/K$. In particular, for $G/K=U(n)/U(k)\times U(n-k)$, we obtain a new way of multiplying Schur polynomials, i.e., computing the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. The corresponding multiplication on the Clifford algebra side is, in a convenient basis given by projections of the spin module, simply the componentwise multiplication of vectors in $\mathbb{C}^N$, also known as the Hadamard product.

Abstract:Clifford algebras are naturally associated with quadratic forms. These algebras are Z_2-graded by construction. However, only a Z_n-gradation induced by a choice of a basis, or even better, by a Chevalley vector space isomorphism Cl(V) <-> \bigwedge V and an ordering, guarantees a multi-vector decomposition into scalars, vectors, tensors, and so on, mandatory in physics. We show that the Chevalley isomorphism theorem cannot be generalized to algebras if the Z_n-grading or other structures are added, e.g., a linear form. We work with pairs consisting of a Clifford algebra and a linear form or a Z_n-grading which we now call 'Clifford algebras of multi-vectors' or 'quantum Clifford algebras'. It turns out, that in this sense, all multi-vector Clifford algebras of the same quadratic but different bilinear forms are non-isomorphic. The usefulness of such algebras in quantum field theory and superconductivity was shown elsewhere. Allowing for arbitrary bilinear forms however spoils their diagonalizability which has a considerable effect on the tensor decomposition of the Clifford algebras governed by the periodicity theorems, including the Atiyah-Bott-Shapiro mod 8 periodicity. We consider real algebras Cl_{p,q} which can be decomposed in the symmetric case into a tensor product Cl_{p-1,q-1} \otimes Cl_{1,1}. The general case used in quantum field theory lacks this feature. Theories with non-symmetric bilinear forms are however needed in the analysis of multi-particle states in interacting theories. A connection to q-deformed structures through nontrivial vacuum states in quantum theories is outlined.
