Abstract:We report on recent progress on five-loop calculations in perturbative QCD. We discuss the computation of the perturbative quark condensate, decoupling in QCD, and the precision determination of charm and bottom quark masses. For the latter, we give some first results from a gauge-invariant subset of five-loop diagrams.

Abstract:We compute all helicity amplitudes for the scattering of five partons in two-loop QCD in all the relevant flavor configurations, retaining all contributing color structures. We employ tensor projection to obtain helicity amplitudes in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme starting from a set of primitive amplitudes. Our analytic results are expressed in terms of massless pentagon functions, and are easy to evaluate numerically. These amplitudes provide important input to investigations of collinear-factorization breaking and to studies of the multi-Regge kinematics regime.

Non-Planar Two-Loop Amplitudes for Five-Parton Scattering

Abstract:We review the current status of high-multiplicity double-virtual QCD corrections to processes relevant for LHC phenomenology. In particular, we discuss the recent full-color calculation of the five-parton process, whose two-loop amplitudes are required to obtain next-to-next-to-leading order predictions for three-jet production at the LHC. We address various aspects of the computation, including color decomposition, renormalization, partial amplitudes, color identities and the construction of the finite remainder. We review the method of numerical unitarity, which is used to generate finite-field samples of the amplitude. We then focus on the analytic reconstruction of the coefficient functions from these numerical samples via Ansatz techniques. A novel algorithm, based on the correlation of codimension-one residues, helps manage the complexity of the calculation. Little-group rescalings of the gluon amplitude, inspired by supersymmetry Ward identities, facilitate the computation of the quark amplitudes. We conclude with an outlook towards upcoming computations with an increased number of scales, leading to larger Ansätze and more complicated alphabets.

Abstract:We report the result of the numerical lattice computation of the lepton anomalous magnetic moment in QED up to five loops. We concentrate on the contributions from diagrams without lepton loops, which are the most difficult part of the calculation in the Feynman diagram method while the lattice formulation is the easiest. Good agreement with the results of the Feynman diagram method is observed.

Abstract:We compute epsilon-expansions around 4 dimensions of a complete set of master integrals for momentum space five-loop massless propagator integrals in dimensional regularization, up to and including the first order with contributions of transcendental weight nine. Our method is the glue-and-cut technique from Baikov and Chetyrkin, which proves extremely effective in that it determines all expansion coefficients to this order in terms of recursively one-loop integrals and only one further integral. We observe that our results are compatible with conjectures that predict $\pi$-dependent contributions.

Abstract:We have computed the even-$N$ moments $N \leq 20$ of the gluon-to-quark splitting function $P_{\rm qg}$ at the fourth order of perturbative QCD via the renormalization of off-shell operator matrix elements. Our results, derived analytically for a general gauge group, agree with all results obtained for this function so far, in particular with the lowest five moments obtained via physical cross sections. Using our new moments and all available endpoint constraints, we construct approximations for the four-loop $P_{\rm qg}(x)$ that should be sufficient for a wide range of collider-physics applications. The N$^3$LO corrections resulting from these and the corresponding quark-quark splitting functions lead to a marked improvement of the perturbative accuracy for the scale derivative of the singlet quark distribution, with effects of 1% or less at $x \gtrsim 10^{\,-4}$ at a standard reference scale with $\alpha_s = 0.2$.

Abstract:I discuss the recent advances in the computation of two-loop scattering amplitudes for five-particle processes. The latter are fundamental ingredients to obtain predictions at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD for many interesting LHC processes. I discuss the state-of-the-art technology for computing scattering amplitudes analytically, and present new results relevant for the LHC phenomenology.

Four-loop splitting functions in QCD -- The quark-to-gluon case

Abstract:We present the even-N moments N =< 20 of the fourth-order (N^3LO) contribution P_{gq}^(3)(x) to the quark-to-gluon splitting function in perturbative QCD. These moments, obtained by analytically computing off-shell operator matrix elements for a general gauge group, agree with all known results, in particular with the moments N =< 10 derived before from structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering. Using the new moments and the available endpoint constraints, we construct approximations for P_{gq}^(3)(x) which improve upon those obtained from the lowest five even moments. The remaining uncertainties of this function are now practically irrelevant at momentum fractions x > 0.1. The resulting errors of the convolution of P_{gq} at N^3LO with a typical quark distribution are small at x >~ 10^{-3} and exceed 1% only at x ~< 10^{-4} for a strong coupling alpha_s = 0.2. The present results for P_{gq}^(3)(x) should thus be sufficient for most collider-physics applications.

Two-Loop Five-Point One-Mass Amplitudes in the Spinor-Helicity Formalism

Abstract:Processes involving electroweak vector bosons in association with jets are crucial for precision studies of the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider. Accurate predictions for the process $pp\rightarrow V(\rightarrow\bar\ell\ell)jj$ at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), as well as N$^3$LO ones for the process with one fewer jet, require two-loop five-point one-mass amplitudes. These exhibit a significant increase in complexity compared to their massless counterparts. We present results for the partonic processes $\bar qQ\bar Qq\bar\ell\ell$ and $\bar qggq\bar\ell\ell$, with a forthcoming package for phenomenology. The present recalculation is based on the previous analytic results from ref. [1]. For the first time, we express two-loop five-point one-mass amplitudes in the spinor-helicity formalism. We achieve three orders of magnitude smaller expressions compared to previous results. This will facilitate phenomenological studies and help clarify mathematical properties of the amplitude.

Abstract:The rational parts of 5-gluon one-loop amplitudes are computed by using the newly developed method for computing the rational parts directly from Feynman integrals. We found complete agreement with the previously well-known results of Bern, Dixon and Kosower obtained by using the string theory method. Intermediate results for some combinations of Feynman diagrams are presented in order to show the efficiency of the method and the local cancellation between different contributions.

Abstract:We provide a complete description of the two-loop infrared singularities of scattering amplitudes with an arbitrary number of massive and massless partons in non-Abelian gauge theories. To this end, we calculate the two universal functions that completely specify the structure of three-parton correlations in the soft anomalous-dimension matrix at two-loop order in closed analytic form. Both functions are found to be suppressed like O(m(4)/s(2)) in the limit of small parton masses, in accordance with mass factorization theorems. On the other hand, they are unsuppressed near the threshold for pair production of two heavy particles. As an application, we calculate the two-loop anomalous-dimension matrix for qq --> tt near threshold and show that it is not diagonal in the s-channel singlet-octet basis.

Abstract:We compute the complete set of two-loop master integrals for the scattering of four massless particles and a massive one. Our results are ready for phenomenological applications, removing a major obstacle to the computation of complete next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to processes such as the production of a $H/Z/W$ boson in association with two jets at the LHC. Furthermore, they open the door to new investigations into the structure of quantum-field theories and provide precious analytic data for studying the mathematical properties of Feynman integrals.

Abstract:We compute the three-loop corrections to the helicity amplitudes for $q\bar{q}\to Q\bar{Q}$ scattering in massless QCD. In the Lorentz decomposition of the scattering amplitude we avoid evanescent Lorentz structures and map the corresponding form factors directly to the physical helicity amplitudes. We reduce the amplitudes to master integrals and express them in terms of harmonic polylogarithms. The renormalised amplitudes exhibit infrared divergences of dipole and quadrupole type, as predicted by previous work on the infrared structure of multileg scattering amplitudes. We derive the finite remainders and present explicit results for all relevant partonic channels, both for equal and different quark flavours.

Abstract:The infrared divergences of QCD scattering amplitudes can be derived from an anomalous dimension Γ, which is a matrix in color space and depends on the momenta and masses of the external partons. It has recently been shown that in cases where there are at least two massive partons involved in the scattering process, starting at two-loop order Γ receives contributions involving color and momentum correlations between three (and more) partons. The three-parton correlations can be described by two universal functions F1 and f2. In this paper these functions are calculated at two-loop order in closed analytic form and their properties are studied in detail. Both functions are found to be suppressed like (m4/s2) in the limit of small parton masses, in accordance with mass factorization theorems proposed in the literature. On the other hand, both functions are (1) and even diverge logarithmically near the threshold for pair production of two heavy particles. As an application, we calculate the infrared poles in the q → t and gg → t scattering amplitudes at two-loop order.
The Higgs-gluon form factor at three loops in QCD with three mass scales

Abstract:We report on the complete three-loop corrections to the Higgs-gluon form factor in QCD. While previous calculations are based on QCD with a single heavy quark of arbitrary mass, we extend the study to QCD involving two different massive quark flavors. Thereby, the full set of possible Feynman diagrams at three-loop order is taken into account. Employing differential equations for the relevant master integrals, we determine the form factor in terms of analytic expansions. Outside the radii of convergence, we compute high-precision numerical samples over the two-dimensional physical parameter space. Our new findings will enter as virtual corrections the computation of the top-bottom interference in hadronic Higgs-boson production at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD.

Abstract:In this thesis, we present recent advances at the precision frontier of higher-order quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations. We consider massless two-loop five-point amplitudes, with a particular focus on diphoton-plus-jet production through gluon fusion. We build a library of infrared functions up to at most next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD, which can be used to validate amplitudes and construct counterterms in subtraction schemes at NNLO. We review progress in the novel use of machine learning technology to optimise the evaluation of amplitudes in hadron collider simulations. We present the full-colour virtual QCD corrections to diphoton-plus-jet production through gluon fusion, discussing the new techniques developed to calculate these non-planar two-loop amplitudes. We use these amplitudes to compute the next-to-leading QCD corrections to the differential cross sections of diphoton-plus-jet production through gluon fusion at the Large Hadron Collider. We also present the leading-colour double-virtual corrections to hadronic trijet production. All derived amplitudes are made available in a public implementation that is ready for further phenomenological application.
