Abstract:Searches for violations of the fundamental symmetries of parity P and time reversal T in atomic and molecular systems provide a powerful tool for precise measurements of the physics of and beyond the standard model. In this work, we investigate how these symmetry violations affect the response of atoms and molecules to applied electric and magnetic fields. We recover well-known observables like the P-odd, T-odd spin-electric field coupling that is used for searches of the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) or the effect of P-odd, T-even optical rotation in atomic gases. Besides these, we obtain several other possible observables. This includes, in particular, effects that can only be seen when using oscillating or inhomogeneous fields.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore how to use polarizabilities to detect violations of parity (P), time - reversal (T), and combined parity - time - reversal (PT) symmetries in atomic and molecular systems. Specifically, the authors studied how these symmetry violations affect the response of atoms and molecules to applied electric and magnetic fields. ### Main Problem Analysis 1. **Background and Motivation** - The application of precision measurement in atomic and molecular systems is a powerful tool for testing the standard model and its extensions. - Searching for P, T, and PT symmetry violations can reveal new physical phenomena beyond the standard model. - For example, the P - odd, T - odd spin - electric - field coupling effect used in electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) measurements, and the P - odd, T - even optical rotation effect in atomic gases. 2. **Research Objectives** - Explore the effects of P, T, and PT symmetry violations on the interaction between electromagnetic fields and atoms and molecules. - Derive possible observables and analyze the behavior of these observables under different types of electromagnetic fields (such as oscillating or inhomogeneous fields). - Pay special attention to those previously unexplored interaction terms, including interactions with inhomogeneous and time - varying fields. 3. **Methods and Theoretical Framework** - Use the low - order multipole approximation to handle the interaction between electromagnetic fields and atomic and molecular systems. - Derive time - dependent expressions for the induced electric dipole moment, magnetic dipole moment, and electric quadrupole moment through perturbation theory. - Analyze the behavior of these polarizabilities under P and T transformations to determine which terms correspond to specific symmetry breakings. 4. **Results and Significance** - Discover and classify multiple possible observables, including some new interaction terms. - Emphasize the importance of using inhomogeneous and time - varying fields, which can detect all three types of symmetry violations. - Discuss the difficulties of T - odd observables in time - varying fields. ### Formula Summary To ensure the correctness and readability of the formulas, the following are the key formulas involved in the paper: 1. **Electromagnetic Field Interaction Potential** \[ V_{\text{EM}}=-\mathbf{d}\cdot\mathbf{E}-\boldsymbol{\mu}\cdot\mathbf{H}-Q_{ij}\partial_i E_j \] 2. **General Expression for the Induced Electric Dipole Moment** \[ \langle d_i\rangle\simeq\Re\left[d\alpha_i + d_P\alpha_i + d_{PT}\alpha_i + d_T\alpha_i\right] +\Re\left[dd\alpha_{\ell ij}E_{\ell j}+d\mu\alpha_{\ell ij}H_{\ell j}+dQ\alpha_{\ell ij}\partial_j E_{\ell k}\right] +\Im\left[dd\alpha'_{\ell ij}\dot{E}_{\ell j}+d\mu\alpha'_{\ell ij}\dot{H}_{\ell j}+dQ\alpha'_{\ell ij}\partial_j\dot{E}_{\ell k}\right] \] 3. **Decomposition of Polarizability** \[ \alpha_{\ell ij}=\delta_{ij}\bar{\alpha}_{\ell s}+\varepsilon_{ij\kappa}J_\kappa\bar{\alpha}_{\ell v}+QJ^2_{ij}\bar{\alpha}_{\ell t} \] 4. **Decomposition of Third - Order Tensor Polarizability** \[ \alpha_
