What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily aims to address the following issues: 1. **Constructing Virtual Cycles**: The main goal of the paper is to construct in detail the virtual cycles required to define the Cohomological Field Theory (CohFT) associated with the Gauged Linear Sigma Model (GLSM) in the geometric phase. - The authors provide a detailed construction process to ensure the definition of a CohFT related to GLSM. This theory is based on the intersection theory on the space of solutions to the gauged Witten equation in the geometric phase. 2. **Addressing Technical Challenges**: The paper also addresses some significant technical issues related to the gauged Witten equation, particularly concerning the Fredholm property of the equation. These issues are especially prominent in the so-called "general case," and the paper avoids these difficulties by restricting to the geometric phase. 3. **Proving Key Theorems**: The paper provides complete proofs of two important theorems necessary for constructing the virtual cycles. These theorems involve the properties of the gauged Witten equation. 4. **Constructing Moduli Space of Stable Solutions**: The paper defines the moduli space of stable solutions and, for each pair of non-negative integers \( (g, n) \) (where \( 2g + n \geq 3 \)), provides a moduli space of stable solutions \( M_r^{g,n}(V,G,W,\mu) \), where \( V \), \( G \), \( W \), and \( \mu \) are components of the GLSM space. 5. **Main Theorem on Virtual Cycles**: The paper presents a main theorem describing the properties of the virtual fundamental class, including dimension, disconnected graphs, cutting edges, and combinatorial properties. These properties are crucial for constructing the Cohomological Field Theory. In summary, the paper aims to provide a solid mathematical foundation for the theory of GLSM, particularly in the geometric phase, by constructing the moduli space of stable solutions and their virtual cycles, and proving the related key technical theorems to achieve this goal.
