Abstract:Semismooth* Newton methods have been proposed in recent years targeting multi-valued inclusion problems and have been successfully implemented to deal with several concrete generalized equations. In this paper, we show that these executable implementations are exactly the applications of G-semismooth Newton methods for solving nonsmooth equations localized from these generalized equations. This new understanding expands the breadth of G-semismooth Newton methods in theory, and more importantly, facilitates the design and implementation of practical Newton-type algorithms for solving generalized equations.
Optimization and Control
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to establish a connection between the existing implementable semismooth* Newton methods and the G - semismooth Newton methods in solving generalized equations (GEs). Specifically, the paper shows that the implementable semismooth* Newton methods for solving generalized equations in specific forms (as shown in equations (2) and (3)) are actually applications of the G - semismooth Newton methods. This not only expands the theoretical scope of the G - semismooth Newton methods but also promotes the design and implementation of practical Newton - type algorithms applicable to generalized equations. ### Background In the past few decades, Newton - type methods have been widely studied and developed in solving non - smooth equations. For generalized equations, these methods have also been deeply studied. The semismooth* Newton method is a new method for multi - valued inclusion problems and has been successfully applied to solve specific generalized equations in recent years. However, the specific implementation of these methods is relatively complex and requires the design of appropriate "approximate steps" to make them practical. ### Main Contributions The main contributions of the paper are as follows: 1. **Theoretical Connection**: By reformulating the generalized equations in specific forms (such as equations (2) and (3)) as locally Lipschitz continuous non - smooth equations, it is proved that these implementable semismooth* Newton methods are actually applications of the G - semismooth Newton methods. 2. **Specific Implementation**: Two known implementable semismooth* Newton methods (used to solve equations (2) and (3) respectively) are analyzed in detail, and it is proved that their convergence conditions are consistent with those of the G - semismooth Newton methods. 3. **Practical Significance**: This finding provides a solid theoretical basis for understanding and developing practical non - smooth Newton methods for solving generalized equations. ### Specific Problems - **Equation (2)**: \[ 0 \in F(x)+\nabla G(x) N_D(G(x)) \] - where \( F: \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^n \) is continuously differentiable, \( G: \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^s \) is twice continuously differentiable, \( D \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n \) is a closed convex polyhedral set, \( \nabla G(x) \) represents the adjoint of the Jacobian operator \( G'(x) \), and \( N_D(\cdot) \) represents the normal cone mapping in convex analysis. - **Equation (3)**: \[ 0 \in F(x)+\partial q(x) \] - where \( F: \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^n \) is a continuously differentiable function, and \( \partial q \) is the sub - differential mapping of a given closed convex function \( q: \mathbb{R}^n \to (-\infty, \infty] \). ### Conclusion Through theoretical analysis and specific implementation, the paper shows the connection between the implementable semismooth* Newton methods and the G - semismooth Newton methods, providing new perspectives and tools for understanding and developing more effective generalized equation - solving algorithms.
