Abstract:In this short note, we present a purely entropic proof that in a $3$-edge-colored simple graph with $R$ red edges, $G$ green edges, and $B$ blue edges, the number of rainbow triangles is at most $\sqrt{2RGB}$.

Abstract:Given an edge-colored graph $G$, we denote the number of colors as $c(G)$, and the number of edges as $e(G)$. An edge-colored graph is rainbow if no two edges share the same color. A proper $mK_3$ is a vertex disjoint union of $m$ rainbow triangles. Rainbow problems have been studied extensively in the context of anti-Ramsey theory, and more recently, in the context of Tur\'{a}n problems. B. Li. et al. \textit{European J. Combin. 36 (2014)} found that a graph must contain a rainbow triangle if $e(G)+c(G) \geq \binom{n}{2}+ n$. L. Li. and X. Li. \textit{Discrete Applied Mathematics 318 (2022)} conjectured a lower bound on $e(G)+c(G)$ such that $G$ must contain a proper $mK_3$. In this paper, we provide a construction that disproves the conjecture. We also introduce a result that guarantees the existence of $m$ vertex disjoint rainbow $K_k$ subgraphs in general host graphs, and a sharp result on the existence of proper $mK_3$ in complete graphs.

Abstract:Let $G = (V,E)$ be an $n$-vertex graph and let $c: E \to \mathbb{N}$ be a coloring of its edges. Let $d^c(v)$ be the number of distinct colors on the edges at $v \in V$ and let $\delta^c(G) = \min_{v \in V} \{ d^{c}(v) \}$. H. Li proved that $\delta^c(G) > n/2$ guarantees a rainbow triangle in $G$. We give extensions of Li's result to cliques $K_r$ for $r \ge 4$.

Abstract:Erdős and Sós proposed the problem of determining the maximum number F(n) of rainbow triangles in 3-edge-colored complete graphs on n vertices. They conjectured that F(n)=F(a)+F(b)+F(c)+F(d)+abc+abd+acd+bcd, where a+b+c+d=n and a,b,c,d are as equal as possible. We prove that the conjectured recurrence holds for sufficiently large n. We also prove the conjecture for n=4k for all k≥0. These results imply that lim⁡F(n)(n3)=0.4, and determine the unique limit object. In the proof we use flag algebras combined with stability arguments.

Abstract:In an edge-colored graph $G$, a rainbow clique $K_k$ is a $k$-complete subgraph in which all the edges have distinct colors. Let $e(G)$ and $c(G)$ be the number of edges and colors in $G$, respectively. In this paper, we show that for any $\varepsilon>0$, if $e(G)+c(G) \geq (1+\frac{k-3}{k-2}+2\varepsilon) {n\choose 2}$ and $k\geq 3$, then for sufficiently large $n$, the number of rainbow cliques $K_k$ in $G$ is $\Omega(n^k)$. We also characterize the extremal graphs $G$ without a rainbow clique $K_k$, for $k=4,5$, when $e(G)+c(G)$ is maximum. Our results not only address existing questions but also complete the findings of Ehard and Mohr (Ehard and Mohr, Rainbow triangles and cliques in edge-colored graphs. {\it European Journal of Combinatorics, 84:103037,2020}).

Abstract:An edge-colored graph G is called rainbow if no two edges of G have the same color. For a graph G and a subgraph H⊆G , the anti-Ramsey number AR(G,H) is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of G such that G contains no rainbow copy of H . Recently, the anti-Ramsey problem for disjoint union of graphs received much attention. In particular, several researchers focused on the problem for graphs consisting of small components. In this paper, we continue the work in this direction. We refine the bound and obtain the precise value of AR(Kn,P3∪tP2) for all n≥2t+3 . Additionally, we determine the value of AR(Kn,2P3∪tP2) for any integers t≥1 and n≥2t+7 .

Abstract:We show that for every integer $m \ge 2$ and large $n$, every properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices with at least $n (\log n)^{53}$ edges contains a rainbow subdivision of $K_m$. This is sharp up to a polylogarithmic factor. Our proof method exploits the connection between the mixing time of random walks and expansion in graphs.

Abstract:One of the most fundamental results in graph theory is Mantel's theorem which determines the maximum number of edges in a triangle-free graph of order $n$. Recently a colorful variant of this problem has been solved. In such a variant we consider $c$ graphs on a common vertex set, thinking of each graph as edges in a distinct color, and want to determine the smallest number of edges in each color which guarantees existence of a rainbow triangle. Here, we solve the analogous problem for directed graphs without rainbow triangles, either directed or transitive, for any number of colors. The constructions and proofs essentially differ for $c=3$ and $c \geq 4$ and the type of the forbidden triangle. Additionally, we also solve the analogous problem in the setting of oriented graphs.

Abstract:Let G ≔( G 1 , G 2 , G 3 ) be a triple of graphs on a common vertex set V of size n . A rainbow triangle in G is a triple of edges (e 1 , e 2 , e 3 ) with e i ∈ G i for each i and {e 1 , e 2 , e 3 } forming a triangle in V . In this paper we consider the following question: what triples of minimum‐degree conditions (δ( G 1 ) , δ( G 2 ) , δ( G 3 ) ) guarantee the existence of a rainbow triangle? This may be seen as a minimum‐degree version of a problem of Aharoni, DeVos, de la Maza, Montejano and Šámal on density conditions for rainbow triangles, which was recently resolved by the authors. We establish that the extremal behaviour in the minimum‐degree setting differs strikingly from that seen in the density setting, with discrete jumps as opposed to continuous transitions. Our work leaves a number of natural questions open, which we discuss.

Abstract:We show that for any integer $t \ge 2$, every properly edge colored $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ contains a rainbow subdivision of a complete graph of size $t$. Note that this bound is within $(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ factor of the lower bound. This also implies a result on the rainbow Turán number of cycles.

Abstract:Let $\mathbf{G}:=(G_1, G_2, G_3)$ be a triple of graphs on the same vertex set $V$ of size $n$. A rainbow triangle in $\mathbf{G}$ is a triple of edges $(e_1, e_2, e_3)$ with $e_i\in G_i$ for each $i$ and $\{e_1, e_2, e_3\}$ forming a triangle in $V$. The triples $\mathbf{G}$ not containing rainbow triangles, also known as Gallai colouring templates, are a widely studied class of objects in extremal combinatorics. In the present work, we fully determine the set of edge densities $(\alpha_1, \alpha_2, \alpha_3)$ such that if $\vert E(G_i)\vert> \alpha_i n^2$ for each $i$ and $n$ is sufficiently large, then $\mathbf{G}$ must contain a rainbow triangle. This resolves a problem raised by Aharoni, DeVos, de la Maza, Montejanos and Šámal, generalises several previous results on extremal Gallai colouring templates, and proves a recent conjecture of Frankl, Györi, He, Lv, Salia, Tompkins, Varga and Zhu.

Abstract:In a rainbow version of the classical Turán problem one considers multiple graphs on a common vertex set, thinking of each graph as edges in a distinct color, and wants to determine the minimum number of edges in each color which guarantees existence of a rainbow copy (having at most one edge from each graph) of a given graph. Here, we prove an optimal solution for this problem for any directed star and any number of colors.

Abstract:An edge (vertex) coloured graph is rainbow-connected if there is a rainbow path between any two vertices, i.e. a path all of whose edges (internal vertices) carry distinct colours. Rainbow edge (vertex) connectivity of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of colours needed for a rainbow edge (vertex) colouring of $G$. In this paper we propose a very simple approach to studying rainbow connectivity in graphs. Using this idea, we give a unified proof of several known results, as well as some new ones.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate several extremal combinatorics problems that ask for the maximum number of copies of a fixed subgraph given the number of edges. We call problems of this type Kruskal--Katona-type problems. Most of the problems that will be discussed in this paper are related to the joints problem. There are two main results in this paper. First, we prove that, in a $3$-edge-colored graph with $R$ red, $G$ green, $B$ blue edges, the number of rainbow triangles is at most $\sqrt{2RGB}$, which is sharp. Second, we give a generalization of the Kruskal--Katona theorem that implies many other previous generalizations. Both arguments use the entropy method, and the main innovation lies in a more clever argument that improves bounds given by Shearer's inequality.

Abstract:We call an edge-colored graph rainbow if all of its edges receive distinct colors. An edge-colored graph $\Gamma$ is called $H$-rainbow saturated if $\Gamma$ does not contain a rainbow copy of $H$ and adding an edge of any color to $\Gamma$ creates a rainbow copy of $H$. The rainbow saturation number $sat(n,{R}(H))$ is the minimum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-rainbow saturated graph. Girão, Lewis, and Popielarz conjectured that $sat(n,{R}(K_r))=2(r-2)n+O(1)$ for fixed $r\geq 3$. Disproving this conjecture, we establish that for every $r\geq 3$, there exists a constant $\alpha_r$ such that $$r + \Omega\left(r^{1/3}\right) \le \alpha_r \le r + r^{1/2} \qquad \text{and} \qquad sat(n,{R}(K_r)) = \alpha_r n + O(1).$$ Recently, Behague, Johnston, Letzter, Morrison, and Ogden independently gave a slightly weaker upper bound which was sufficient to disprove the conjecture. They also introduced the weak rainbow saturation number, and asked whether this is equal to the rainbow saturation number of $K_r$, since the standard weak saturation number of complete graphs equals the standard saturation number. Surprisingly, our lower bound separates the rainbow saturation number from the weak rainbow saturation number, answering this question in the negative. The existence of the constant $\alpha_r$ resolves another of their questions in the affirmative for complete graphs. Furthermore, we show that the conjecture of Girão, Lewis, and Popielarz is true if we have an additional assumption that the edge-colored $K_r$-rainbow saturated graph must be rainbow. As an ingredient of the proof, we study graphs which are $K_r$-saturated with respect to the operation of deleting one edge and adding two edges.

Abstract:Let $G = (V, E)$ be a graph on $n$ vertices, and let $c: E \to P$, where $P$ is a set of colors. Let $\delta^c(G) = \min_{v \in V} \{ d^{c}(v) \}$ where $d^c(v)$ is the number of colors on edges incident to a vertex $v$ of $G$. In 2011, Fujita and Magnant showed that if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices that satisfies $\delta^c(G)\geq n/2$, then for every two vertices $u, v$ there is a properly-colored $u,v$-path in $G$. In this paper, we show that the same bound for $\delta^c(G)$ implies that any two vertices are connected by a rainbow path.

Abstract:Let $G = (V, E)$ be an $n$-vertex edge-colored graph. In 2013, H. Li proved that if every vertex $v \in V$ is incident to at least $(n+1)/2$ distinctly colored edges, then $G$ admits a rainbow triangle. We prove that the same hypothesis ensures a rainbow $\ell$-cycle $C_{\ell}$ whenever $n \ge 432 \ell$. This result is sharp for all odd integers $\ell \geq 3$, and extends earlier work of the authors for when $\ell$ is even.

Abstract:An edge-coloured graph is said to be rainbow if no colour appears more than once. Extremal problems involving rainbow objects have been a focus of much research over the last decade as they capture the essence of a number of interesting problems in a variety of areas. A particularly intensively studied question due to Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte from 2007 asks for the maximum possible average degree of a properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices without a rainbow cycle. Improving upon a series of earlier bounds, Tomon proved an upper bound of $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ for this question. Very recently, Janzer-Sudakov and Kim-Lee-Liu-Tran independently removed the $o(1)$ term in Tomon's bound, showing a bound of $O(\log^2 n)$. We prove an upper bound of $(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ for this maximum possible average degree when there is no rainbow cycle. Our result is tight up to the $o(1)$ term, and so it essentially resolves this question. In addition, we observe a connection between this problem and several questions in additive number theory, allowing us to extend existing results on these questions for abelian groups to the case of non-abelian groups.

Abstract:Let $D$ be an arc-colored digraph. The arc number $a(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of arcs of $D$. The color number $c(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of colors assigned to the arcs of $D$. A rainbow triangle in $D$ is a directed triangle in which every pair of arcs have distinct colors. Let $f(D)$ be the smallest integer such that if $c(D)\geq f(D)$, then $D$ contains a rainbow triangle. In this paper we obtain $f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$ and $f(T_n)$, where $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ is a complete digraph of order $n$ and $T_n$ is a strongly connected tournament of order $n$. Moreover we characterize the arc-colored complete digraph $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ with $c(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})=f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})-1$ and containing no rainbow triangles. We also prove that an arc-colored digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices contains a rainbow triangle when $a(D)+c(D)\geq a(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})+f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$, which is a directed extension of the undirected case.
