Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a bordism category $\mathcal{C}_d^{PL}$ whose objects are bundles of closed $(d-1)$-dimensional piecewise linear manifolds and whose morphisms are bundles of $d$-dimensional piecewise linear cobordisms. In the main theorem of this article, we show that the classifying space $B\mathcal{C}_d^{PL}$ is weak homotopy equivalent to an infinite loop space. We regard $\mathcal{C}_d^{PL}$ as the piecewise linear analogue of the category of smooth cobordisms which has been studied extensively in connection to the Madsen-Weiss Theorem, and the main result of this paper is a first step towards obtaining Madsen-Weiss type results in the context of piecewise linear topology.

Abstract:In this paper, we identify the concordance classes of smooth structures on $PL$-manifolds of dimension between $8$ and $10$ in terms of the cohomology and Steenrod operations. This leads to the computation of the homotopy inertia groups. Finally we discuss the special cases of Lens spaces and real projective spaces.

Abstract:In this article, we prove the PL analogue of the theorem of Galatius, Madsen, Tillmann, and Weiss which describes the homotopy type of the smooth cobordism category. More specifically, we introduce the PL Madsen-Tillmann spectrum $\mathbf{MT}PL(d)$ and prove that there is a weak homotopy equivalence of the form $B\mathsf{Cob}^{\mathrm{PL}}_d \simeq \Omega^{\infty-1}\mathbf{MT}PL(d)$. We also discuss how to adjust the methods of this paper to obtain the topological version of our main result.

PL homeomorphisms of surfaces and codimension $2$ PL foliations

Abstract:Haefliger-Thurston's conjecture predicts that Haefliger's classifying space for $C^r$-foliations of codimension $n$ whose normal bundles are trivial is $2n$-connected. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for PL foliations of codimension $2$. As a consequence, we use a version of Mather-Thurston's theorem for PL homeomorphisms due to the author to derive new homological properties for PL surface homeomorphisms. In particular, we answer a question of Epstein in dimension $2$ and prove the simplicity of the identity component of PL surface homeomorphisms.

Abstract:We survey some results in the field of equivariant cobordism. In particular, we use methods from equivariant stable homotopy theory to calculate the unoriented $C_2$-equivariant bordism ring $\Omega^{C_2}_*$, which was originally calculated by Alexander using other methods. Our proof method generalizes well to other settings, such as equivariant complex cobordism, and affords a formal group theoretic interpretation of Alexander's calculation.

Abstract:We introduce a class of cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds that we call mixed-platonic, composed of regular ideal hyperbolic polyhedra of more than one type, which includes certain previously-known examples. We establish basic facts about mixed-platonic manifolds which allow us to conclude, among other things, that there is no mixed-platonic hyperbolic knot complement with hidden symmetries.

Abstract:We study various analogues of theorems from PL topology for cubical complexes. In particular, we characterize when two PL homeomorphic cubulations are equivalent by Pachner moves by showing the question to be equivalent to the existence of cobordisms between generic immersions of hypersurfaces. This solves a question and conjecture of Habegger and Funar.

Abstract:We prove a bordism version of Gromov's linearity conjecture over a large family of acyclic groups, for manifolds with arbitrary dimension. Every group embeds into one of these acyclic groups, and thus it follows that the conjecture is true if one allows to enlarge a given group. Our result holds in both PL and smooth categories, and for both oriented and unoriented cases. In the PL case, our results hold without assuming bounded local geometry. As an application, we prove that there is a universal linear bound for the Cheeger-Gromov $L^2$ $\rho$-invariants of PL $(4k-1)$-manifolds associated with arbitrary regular covers. We also show that the minimum number of simplices in a PL triangulation of $(4k-1)$-manifolds with a fixed simple homotopy type is unbounded if the fundamental group has nontrivial torsion. The proof of our main results builds on quantitative algebraic and geometric techniques over the simplicial classifying spaces of groups.

Abstract:We show the existence of linear bounds on Wall $\rho$-invariants of PL manifolds, employing a new combinatorial concept of $G$-colored polyhedra. As application, we show that how the number of h-cobordism classes of manifolds simple homotopy equivalent to a lens space with $V$ simplices and the fundamental group of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ grows in $V$. Furthermore we count the number of homotopy lens spaces with bounded geometry in $V$. Similarly, we give new linear bounds on Cheeger-Gromov $\rho$-invariants of PL manifolds endowed with a faithful representation also. A key idea is to construct a cobordism with a linear complexity whose boundary is $\pi_1$-injectively embedded, using relative hyperbolization. As application, we study the complexity theory of high-dimensional lens spaces. Lastly we show the density of $\rho$-invariants over manifolds homotopy equivalent to a given manifold for certain fundamental groups. This implies that the structure set is not finitely generated.

Abstract:This paper gives the classifications of certain manifolds $\mathcal{M}$ of dimension $13$ up to diffeomorphism, homeomorphism, and homotopy equivalence, whose cohomology rings are isomorphic to $H^\ast(\mathrm{CP}^3\times S^7;\mathbb{Z})$. Moreover, we prove that either $\mathcal{M}$ or $\mathcal{M}\#\Sigma^{13}$ admits a metric of non-negative sectional curvature where $\Sigma^{13}$ is a certain exotic sphere of dimension 13.

Abstract:Cobordism of virtual string links on $n$ strands is a combinatorial generalization of link cobordism. There exists a bijection between virtual string links up to cobordisms and elements of the group $\mathbb{Z}^{n(n-1)}$. This paper also shows that virtual string links up to unwelded equivalence are classified by those groups. Finally, the related theory of welded string link cobordism is defined herein and shown to be trivial for string links with one component.

Abstract:We present a framework to classify PL-types of large censuses of triangulated $4$-manifolds, which we use to classify the PL-types of all triangulated $4$-manifolds with up to $6$ pentachora. This is successful except for triangulations homeomorphic to the $4$-sphere, $\mathbb{C}P^2$, and the rational homology sphere $QS^4(2)$, where we find at most four, three, and two PL-types respectively. We conjecture that they are all standard. In addition, we look at the cases resisting classification and discuss the combinatorial structure of these triangulations -- which we deem interesting in their own rights.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new description of the relative topological structure group of PL manifolds with boundary, and put the relative L -group into an exact sequence of groups. Then we define the relative index of PL manifolds with boundary, and show that this relative index will induce an additive map from the relative L -group to the K -theory of the relative Roe algebra.

Abstract:We classify topological $4$-manifolds with boundary and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$, under some assumptions on the boundary. We apply this to classify surfaces in simply-connected $4$-manifolds with $S^3$ boundary, where the fundamental group of the surface complement is $\mathbb{Z}$. We then compare these homeomorphism classifications with the smooth setting. For manifolds, we show that every Hermitian form over $\mathbb{Z}[t^{\pm 1}]$ arises as the equivariant intersection form of a pair of exotic smooth 4-manifolds with boundary and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}$. For surfaces we have a similar result, and in particular we show that every $2$-handlebody with $S^3$ boundary contains a pair of exotic discs.

Abstract:This paper is a contribution to piecewise linear (PL) symplectic topology. We define the notion of PL symplectic manifold as being a combinatorial manifold endowed with a piecewise constant Whitney symplectic form and investigate possible relations between the two categories of symplectic spaces. We prove that smooth symplectic manifolds admit arbitrarily fine smooth triangulations in general position with respect to the symplectic form and can be $C^0$-approximated by PL symplectic manifolds. We cannot prove that smooth symplectic structures can be triangulated, except in trivial cases, but we can prove that their associated volume form can be triangulated by the volume form of some of these approximating PL manifolds.

Abstract:We give complete geometric invariants of cobordisms of framed fold maps. These invariants consist of two types. We take the immersion of the fold singular set into the target manifold together with information about non-triviality of the normal bundle of the singular set in the source manifold. These invariants were introduced in the author's earlier works. Secondly we take the induced stable partial framing on the source manifold whose cobordisms were studied in general by Koschorke. We show that these invariants describe completely the cobordism groups of framed fold maps into R^n. Then we are looking for dependencies between these invariants and we study fold maps of 4k-dimensional manifolds into R^2. We construct special fold maps which are representatives of the fold cobordism classes and we also compute cobordism groups. We obtain a Poincare-Hopf type formula, which connects local data of the singularities of a fold map of an oriented 4k-dimensional manifold M to the signature of M. We also study the unoriented case analogously and prove a similar formula about the twisting of the normal bundle of the fold singular set.

Abstract:We use a new method to study arrangement in CPl, define a class of nice point arrangements and show that if two nice point arrangements have the same combinatorics, then their complements are diffeomorphic to each other. In particular, the moduli space of nice point arrangements with same combinatorics in CPl is connected. It generalizes the result on point arrangements in CP3 to point arrangements in CPl for any l.

Abstract:A generalized-homology bordism-theory is constructed, such that for certain manifold homotopy stratified sets (MHSS; Quinn-spaces) homeomorphism-invariant geometric fundamental-classes exist. The construction combines three ideas: Firstly, instead of restricting geometric cycles by conditions on links only, a more flexible framework is built directly via geometric properties, secondly, controlled topology methods are used to give an accessible link-based criterion to detect suitable cycles and thirdly, a geometric argument is used to show, that these classes of cycles are suitable to study the transition to intrinsic stratifications. As an application, we give a construction of topologically (homeomorphism) invariant (homological) L-classes on MHSS Witt-spaces satisfying conditions on Whitehead-groups of links and the dimensional spacing of meeting strata. These L-classes agree, whenever those spaces are additionally pl-pseudomanifolds, with the Goresky-MacPherson L-classes.

Abstract:We show that all generalized (real) Bott manifolds which are (small covers) quasitoric manifolds over a product of simplices $\Delta^{n_1}\times\cdots\times\Delta^{n_r}\times\Delta^{1}$ are always boundaries of some manifolds. But these manifolds with the natural $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^n$ action do not necessarily bound equvariantly. In addition, we can construct some examples of null-cobordant but not orientedly null-cobordant manifolds among quasitoric manifolds.
