Abstract:We make use of the Laplace transform and gamma function to construct a new integral transform having the property of mapping a derivative to the backward difference, whence we derive a method for solving difference equations and, relying on classical orthogonal polynomials, for obtaining combinatorial identities. A table of some basic functions is given in the Appendix.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to solve difference equations and obtain combinatorial identities based on orthogonal polynomials by introducing a new integral transform - the Laplace - type transform. Specifically: 1. **Construct a new integral transform**: The paper constructs a new integral transform using the Laplace transform and the Gamma function. This transform has the property of mapping derivatives to backward differences. This new transform can map continuous functions to sequences, thus providing a new method for solving certain discrete problems. 2. **Solve difference equations**: Through this new integral transform, the paper proposes a method to solve difference equations. This method relies on classical orthogonal polynomials, such as Laguerre polynomials and Legendre polynomials. 3. **Obtain combinatorial identities**: The paper also shows how to use this new integral transform to derive some combinatorial identities based on orthogonal polynomials. These identities are of great significance in mathematical analysis and theoretical research. ### Specific problems and methods - **Solving difference equations**: - Solve by transforming the difference equation into a differential equation and using the inverse transform of the Laplace - type transform. - For example, the difference equation of the Fibonacci sequence \( F_n = F_{n - 1}+F_{n - 2} \) can be transformed into the differential equation \( y''- 3y'+y = 0 \) through the Laplace - type transform and then solved. - **Derivation of combinatorial identities**: - Derive some combinatorial identities using the properties of the Laplace - type transform and orthogonal polynomials. - For example, use the properties of the Laplace - type transform and Laguerre polynomials to derive combinatorial identities involving Laguerre polynomials. ### Mathematical tools and formulas - **Definition of the Laplace - type transform**: \[ G\{f(t)\}(s)=\frac{1}{\Gamma(\alpha)}\int_{0}^{\infty}e^{-st}t^{\alpha - 1}f(t)\,dt\quad(s > r,\alpha > 0) \] - **Properties of the Laplace - type transform**: - Transform of derivatives: \[ G\{f^{(p)}(t)\}(s)=\nabla_{s}^{p}\phi_{n}(s)\quad\text{for}\,n\geq p \] - Transform of integrals: \[ G\{t^{r}f(t)\}(s)=\nabla_{s}^{p}\phi_{n + r}(s)\quad\text{for}\,r + n\geq p \] - **Examples of combinatorial identities**: - Combinatorial identity of Laguerre polynomials: \[ \sum_{k = 0}^{m}\binom{m}{k}\sum_{j = 0}^{k}\frac{(-1)^{k + j}}{s^{j}}\binom{k}{j}\binom{n + j}{j}=\binom{m + n}{n}\frac{1}{s^{m}} \] Through these methods and tools, the paper not only provides a new way to solve difference equations, but also expands the understanding of orthogonal polynomials and their applications.
