Abstract:We introduce and study the class of spherically ordered groups. The notions of spherically ordered groups and their spectra of spherical orderability are introduced. Values of these spectra are found for a series of natural groups.

Abstract:Motivated by well known results in low-dimensional topology, we introduce and study a topology on the set CO(G) of all left-invariant circular orders on a fixed countable and discrete group G. CO(G) contains as a closed subspace LO(G), the space of all left-invariant linear orders of G, as first topologized by Sikora. We use the compactness of these spaces to show the sets of non-linearly and non-circularly orderable finitely presented groups are recursively enumerable. We describe the action of Aut(G) on CO(G) and relate it to results of Koberda regarding the action on LO(G). We then study two families of circularly orderable groups: finitely generated abelian groups, and free products of circularly orderable groups. For finitely generated abelian groups A, we use a classification of elements of CO(A) to describe the homeomorphism type of the space CO(A), and to show that Aut(A) acts faithfully on the subspace of circular orders which are not linear. We define and characterize Archimedean circular orders, in analogy with linear Archimedean orders. We describe explicit examples of circular orders on free products of circularly orderable groups, and prove a result about the abundance of orders on free products. Whenever possible, we prove and interpret our results from a dynamical perspective.

On finite groups isospectral to groups with abelian Sylow $2$-subgroups

Abstract:The spectrum of a finite group is the set of orders of its elements. We are concerned with finite groups having the same spectrum as a direct product of nonabelian simple groups with abelian Sylow $2$-subgroups. For every positive integer $k$, we find $k$ nonabelian simple groups with abelian Sylow 2-subgroups such that their direct product is uniquely determined by its spectrum in the class of all finite groups. On the other hand, we prove that there are infinitely many finite groups having the same spectrum as the direct cube of the small Ree group $^2G_2(q)$, $q>3$, or the direct fourth power of the sporadic group $J_1$.

Complex spherical designs from group orbits

Abstract:We consider the general question of when all orbits under the unitary action of a finite group give a complex spherical design. Those orbits which have large stabilisers are then good candidates for being optimal complex spherical designs. This is done by developing the general theory of complex designs and associated (harmonic) Molien series for group actions. As an application, we give explicit constructions of some putatively optimal real and complex spherical t-designs.

Circularly ordering direct products and the obstruction to left-orderability

Abstract:Motivated by the recent result that left-orderability of a group $G$ is intimately connected to circular orderability of direct products $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, we provide necessary and sufficient cohomological conditions that such a direct product be circularly orderable. As a consequence of the main theorem, we arrive at a new characterization for the fundamental group of a rational homology 3-sphere to be left-orderable. Our results imply that for mapping class groups of once-punctured surfaces, and other groups whose actions on $S^1$ are cohomologically rigid, the products $G \times \mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ are seldom circularly orderable. We also address circular orderability of direct products in general, dealing with the cases of factor groups admitting a bi-invariant circular ordering, and iterated direct products whose factor groups are amenable.

Asymptotically spherical groups

Abstract:We define a notion of asymptotically spherical topological groups, which says that spheres of large radius with respect to any maximal length function are still spherical with respect to any other maximal length function. This is a strengthening of a related condition introduced by Sebastian Hurtado, which we call bounded eccentricity. Our main result is a partial characterization of which groups are asymptotically spherical, and we also give an example of a discrete, bounded eccentric group who fails to be asymptotically spherical.

Abstract:We investigate the problem of defining group or loop structures on spheres, where by ''sphere'' we mean the level set q(x) = c of a general K-valued quadratic form q, for an invertible scalar c. When K is a field and q non-degenerate, then this corresponds to the classical theory of composition algebras; in particular, for K = R and positive definite forms, we obtain the sequence of the four real division algebras R, C, H (quaternions), O (octonions). Our theory is more general, allowing that K is merely a ring, and the form q possibly degenerate. To achieve this goal, we give a more geometric formulation, replacing the theory of binary composition algebras by ternary algebraic structures, thus defining categories of group spherical and of Moufang spherical spaces. In particular, we develop a theory of ternary Moufang loops, and show how it is related to the Albert-Cayley-Dickson construction and to generalized ternary octonion algebras. At the bottom, a starting point of the whole theory is the (elementary) result that every 2-dimensional quadratic space carries a canonical structure of commutative group spherical space.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$, the {\it genus spetrum} ${\rm sp}(G)$ of $G$ is the set of integers $g\geq 0$ such that $G$ can act faithfully on an orientable closed surface of genus $g$ by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms. The determination of ${\rm sp}(G)$ is a classical topic and has a long history, but progress is lacked. In this paper, when $G$ is an abelian $p$-group with $p>2$, we propose a new approach to ${\rm sp}(G)$, giving a structural description for ${\rm sp}(G)$ in terms of a function which can be computed in finitely many steps.

Abstract:We give a classification and complete algebraic description of groups allowing only finitely many (left multiplication invariant) circular orders. In particular, they are all solvable groups with a specific semi-direct product decomposition. This allows us to also show that the space of circular orders of any group is either finite or uncountable. As a special case and first step, we show that the space of circular orderings of an infinite Abelian group has no isolated points, hence is homeomorphic to a cantor set.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we study the homotopy type of the partially ordered set of left cosets of abelian subgroups in an extraspecial p -group. We prove that the universal cover of its nerve is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of r -spheres where 2 ⁢ r ≥ 4 {2r\geq 4} is the rank of its Frattini quotient. This determines the homotopy type of the universal cover of the classifying space of transitionally commutative bundles as introduced in [2].

Abstract:To the integral symplectic group Sp(2g,Z) we associate two posets of which we prove that they have the Cohen-Macaulay property. As an application we show that the locus of marked decomposable principally polarized abelian varieties in the Siegel space of genus g has the homotopy type of a bouquet of (g-2)-spheres. This, in turn, implies that the rational homology of moduli space of (unmarked) principal polarized abelian varieties of genus g modulo the decomposable ones vanishes in degree g-2 or lower. Another application is an improved stability range for the homology of the symplectic groups over Euclidean rings. But the original motivation comes from envisaged applications to the homology of groups of Torelli type. The proof of our main result rests on a refined nerve theorem for posets that may have an interest in its own right.

Abstract:The spectrum of a group is the set of orders of its elements. Finite groups with the same spectra as the direct squares of the finite simple groups with abelian Sylow 2-subgroups are considered. It is proved that the direct square of the sporadic Janko group and the direct squares of the simple small Ree groups are uniquely characterized by their spectra in the class of finite groups, while for the direct square of a 2-dimensional simple linear group , there are always infinitely many groups (even solvable groups) with the same spectra.

Abstract:We consider the orientation-preserving actions of finite groups G on pairs (S^3, Γ ) , where Γ is a connected graph of genus g>1 , embedded in S^3 . For each g we give the maximum order m_g of such G acting on (S^3, Γ ) for all such Γ⊂ S^3 . Indeed we will classify all graphs Γ⊂ S^3 which realize these m_g in different levels: as abstract graphs and as spatial graphs, as well as their group actions. Such maximum orders without the condition “orientation-preserving” are also addressed.

Abstract:We consider orientation-preserving actions of finite groups G on pairs (S-3, Sigma), where Sigma denotes a compact connected surface embedded in S3. In a previous paper, we considered the case of closed, necessarily orientable surfaces, determined for each genus g > 1 the maximum order of such a G for all embeddings of a surface of genus g, and classified the corresponding embeddings. In the present paper we obtain analogous results for the case of bordered surfaces Sigma (i.e. with non-empty boundary, orientable or not). Now the genus g gets replaced by the algebraic genus alpha of Sigma (the rank of its free fundamental group); for each alpha > 1 we determine the maximum order m(alpha) of an action of G, classify the topological types of the corresponding surfaces (topological genus, number of boundary components, orientability) and their embeddings into S-3. For example, the maximal possibility 12(alpha - 1) is obtained for the finitely many values alpha = 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11, 25, 97, 121 and 241. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of finitely presented simple groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line. Our examples are also of type $F_{\infty}$, have infinite geometric dimension, and admit a nontrivial homogeneous quasimorphism (and hence have infinite commutator width).

On the order sequence of a group

Abstract:This paper provides a bridge between two active areas of research, the spectrum (set of element orders) and the power graph of a finite group. The order sequence of a finite group $G$ is the list of orders of elements of the group, arranged in non-decreasing order. Order sequences of groups of order $n$ are ordered by elementwise domination, forming a partially ordered set. We prove a number of results about this poset, among them the following. M.~Amiri recently proved that the poset has a unique maximal element, corresponding to the cyclic group. We show that the product of orders in a cyclic group of order $n$ is at least $q^{\phi(n)}$ times as large as the product in any non-cyclic group,where $q$ is the smallest prime divisor of $n$ and $\phi$ is Euler's function, with a similar result for the sum. The poset of order sequences of abelian groups of order $p^n$ is naturally isomorphic to the (well-studied) poset of partitions of $n$ with its natural partial order. If there exists a non-nilpotent group of order $n$, then there exists such a group whose order sequence is dominated by the order sequence of any nilpotent group of order $n$. There is a product operation on finite ordered sequences, defined by forming all products and sorting them into non-decreasing order. The product of order sequences of groups $G$ and $H$ is the order sequence of a group if and only if $|G|$ and $|H|$ are coprime. The paper concludes with a number of open problems.

Orbits and characters associated with rook placements for Sylow $p$-subgroups of finite orthogonal groups

Abstract:Let $U$ be a Sylow $p$-subgroup in a classical group over a finite field of characteristic $p$. The coadjoint orbits of the group $U$ play the key role in the description of irreducible complex characters of $U$. Almost all important classes of orbits and characters studied to the moment can be uniformly described as the orbits and characters associated with so-called orthogonal rook placements. In the paper, we study such orbits for the orthogonal group. We construct a polarization for the canonical form on such an orbit and present a semi-direct decomposition for the corresponding irreducible characters in the spirit of the Mackey little group method. As a corollary, we compute the dimension of an orbit associated with an orthogonal rook placement.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify the groups of semisimilarities of finite classical polar spaces with exactly two orbits on the singular or isotropic points. As a byproduct, we obtain many highly symmetric regular sets in the point graphs of finite classical polar spaces.

Element orders in extraspecial groups

Abstract:By using the structure and some properties of extraspecial and generalized/almost extraspecial $p$-groups, we explicitly determine the number of elements of specific orders in such groups. As a consequence, one may find the number of cyclic subgroups of any (generalized/almost) extraspecial group. For a finite group $G$, the ratio of the number of cyclic subgroups to the number of subgroups is called the cyclicity degree of $G$ and is denoted by $cdeg(G)$. We show that the set containing the cyclicity degrees of all finite groups is dense in $[0, 1]$. This is equivalent to giving an affirmative answer to the following question posed by Tóth and Tărnăuceanu: ``For every $a\in [0, 1]$, does there exist a sequence $(G_n)_{n\geq 1}$ of finite groups such that $\displaystyle\lim_{n\to\infty} cdeg(G_n)=a$?". We show that such sequences are formed of finite direct products of extraspecial groups of a specific type.
