Abstract:The Higgs boson (H) trilinear self-coupling, $\lambda_3$, is constrained via its measured properties and limits on the HH pair production using the proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The combination of event categories enriched in single-H and HH events is used to measure $\kappa_\lambda$, defined as the value of $\lambda_3$ normalized to its standard model prediction, while simultaneously constraining the Higgs boson couplings to fermions and vector bosons. Values of $\kappa_\lambda$ outside the interval $-$1.2 $\lt$ $\kappa_\lambda$ $\lt$ 7.5 are excluded at 2$\sigma$ confidence level, which is compatible with the expected range of $-$2.0 $\lt$ $\kappa_\lambda$ $\lt$ 7.7 under the assumption that all other Higgs boson couplings are equal to their standard model predicted values. Relaxing the assumption on the Higgs couplings to fermions and vector bosons the observed (expected) $\kappa_\lambda$ interval is constrained to be within $-$1.4 $\lt$ $\kappa_\lambda$ $\lt$ 7.8 ($-$2.3 $\lt$ $\kappa_\lambda$ $\lt$ 7.8) at 2$\sigma$ confidence level.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to constrain the Higgs boson triple - line self - coupling ($\lambda_3$) by combining the data of single Higgs boson (H) and double Higgs boson (HH) production. Specifically, the goal of the paper is to determine the value of $\kappa_\lambda$ in proton - proton collision experiments by measuring the properties of the Higgs boson and the limits of HH pair production, where $\kappa_\lambda$ is defined as the normalized value of $\lambda_3$ relative to the predicted value of the standard model. At the same time, the paper also attempts to further constrain the range of $\kappa_\lambda$ when relaxing the assumptions of the Higgs boson coupling with other particles. ### Main research content 1. **Background and motivation**: - The triple - line self - coupling ($\lambda_3$) of the Higgs boson (H) is an important parameter in the standard model, which affects the properties and interactions of the Higgs boson. - Currently, the constraints on $\lambda_3$ in LHC experiments are still weak, so more accurate measurements are required to verify the predictions of the standard model and explore physical phenomena beyond the standard model. 2. **Methods**: - Use the data collected by the CMS experiment in $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV proton - proton collisions. - Combine the categories of single H and HH events and constrain the triple - line self - coupling of the Higgs boson by measuring $\kappa_\lambda$. - Consider the coupling of the Higgs boson with fermions and vector bosons at the same time to provide more comprehensive constraints. 3. **Results**: - At the 2σ confidence level, values of $\kappa_\lambda$ outside the interval $- 1.2 <\kappa_\lambda < 7.5$ are excluded. - When relaxing the assumptions of the Higgs boson coupling with other particles, the observed (expected) $\kappa_\lambda$ interval is $-1.4 <\kappa_\lambda < 7.8$ ($-2.3 <\kappa_\lambda < 7.8$). ### Formulas - The form of the Higgs potential $V(H)$ is: \[ V(H)=\frac{1}{2}m_H^2H^2+\lambda_3vH^3+\frac{\lambda_4}{4}H^4 \] where $m_H$ is the mass of the Higgs boson and $v\approx246$ GeV is the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. - The triple - line self - coupling $\lambda_3$ predicted by the standard model is: \[ \lambda_3^{\text{SM}}=\frac{m_H^2}{2v^2}\approx0.13 \] - $\kappa_\lambda$ is defined as: \[ \kappa_\lambda=\frac{\lambda_3}{\lambda_3^{\text{SM}}} \] ### Conclusion This paper provides more stringent constraints on the Higgs boson triple - line self - coupling through a comprehensive analysis of single H and HH events, which is of great significance for verifying the standard model and exploring new physics.
