Abstract:An interaction system of a massless Bose field is investigated. We suppose regularity conditions for the commutation relations of the interaction and annihilation operators. It is proven that if the ground state exists, its multiplicity is finite.

Abstract:We study a one-dimensional Bose system with repulsive delta-function interaction in the presence of an SU(2) intrinsic degree of freedom on the basis of the coordinate Bethe-ansatz. The ground state and the low-lying excitations are determined by both numerical and analytical methods. It is shown that the ground state is an isospin-ferromagnetic state, and the excitations are composed of three elementary particles: holons, antiholons, and isospinons. The isospinon is a triplet coupled to the "ferromagnetic" background anti-parallelly.

Abstract:Bose-Fermi mixtures in one dimension are studied in detail on the basis of an exact solution. Corresponding to three possible choices of the referecce state in the quantum inverse scattering method, three sets of Bethe-ansatz equations are derived explicitly. The features of the ground state and low-lying excitations are investigated. The ground state phase diagram caused by the external field and chemical potential is obtained.

We prove the equivalence of this fermionic system and the bosonic particle system with two-body $\delta$-function interaction with the reversed role of strong and weak couplings. Abstract:The ground-state energy of a mixture of spin-\textonehalf{} fermions and bosons in one dimension, interacting with a repulsive $\ensuremath{\delta}$-function potential, is analyzed. The wave function is given by repeated use of a generalized Bethe hypothesis. The "momenta" in the hypothesis are determined by coupled Fredholm integral equations. Numerical solutions are given. No phase separation is found.

Abstract:A system of two identical spinless bosons on the two-dimensional lattice is considered under the assumption that on-site and first and second nearest-neighboring site interactions between the bosons are only nontrivial and that these interactions are of magnitudes $\gamma$, $\lambda$, and $\mu$, respectively. A partition of the $(\gamma,\lambda,\mu)$-space into connected components is established such that, in each connected component, the two-boson Schroedinger operator corresponding to the zero quasi-momentum of the center of mass has a definite (fixed) number of eigenvalues, which are situated below the bottom of the essential (continuous) spectrum and above its top. Moreover, for each connected component, a sharp lower bound is established on the number of isolated eigenvalues for the two-boson Schrödinger operator corresponding to any admissible nonzero value of the center-of-mass quasimomentum.

Interaction-induced multiparticle bound states in the continuum

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are localized modes residing in the radiation continuum. They were first predicted for single-particle states, and became a general feature of many wave systems. In many-body quantum physics, it is still unclear what would be a close analog of BICs, and whether interparticle interaction may induce BICs. Here, we predict a novel type of multiparticle states in the interaction-modulated Bose-Hubbard model that can be associated with the BIC concept. Under periodic boundary conditions, a so-called quasi-BIC appears as a bound pair residing in a standing wave formed by the third particle. Under open boundary conditions, such a hybrid state becomes an eigenstate of the system. We demonstrate that the Thouless pumping of the quasi-BICs can be realized by modulating the onsite interactions in space and time. Surprisingly, while the center-of-mass of the quasi-BIC is shifted by a unit cell in one cycle, the bound pair moves in the opposite direction with the standing wave.

Abstract:CANGAROO-III is an Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (IACT) array of four 10 m telescopes for very high energy (sub-TeV) gamma-ray astronomy. A design study of the CANGAROO-III telescope system was carried out using the Monte Carlo technique in order to optimize the pixel size and the telescope spacing. Studies were also made of observations at low elevation angles.

Abstract:We study the family $H_{\gamma \lambda \mu}(K)$, $K\in \mathbb{T}^2,$ of discrete Schrödinger operators, associated to the Hamiltonian of a system of two identical bosons on the two-dimen\-sional lattice $\mathbb{Z}^2,$ interacting through on one site, nearest-neighbour sites and next-nearest-neighbour sites with interaction magnitudes $\gamma,\lambda$ and $\mu,$ respectively. We prove there existence an important invariant subspace of operator $H_{\gamma \lambda \mu}(0)$ such that the restriction of the operator $H_{\gamma \lambda \mu}(0)$ on this subspace has at most two eigenvalues lying both as below the essential spectrum as well as above it, depending on the interaction magnitude $\lambda,\mu\in \mathbb{R}$ (only). We also give a sharp lower bound for the number of eigenvalues of $H_{\gamma\lambda\mu}(K)$.

Abstract:We consider the Bose-Hubbard model of atoms in an optical lattice potential when the atom-atom interactions are attractive. If the lowest energy lattice sites are degenerate (such as in the homogeneous case), then, at a critical value of the interaction strength, a phase-coherent condensate becomes unstable to a quantum superposition such that the number distribution of each of the degenerate sites becomes double peaked. In the limit when the interaction dominates, the superposition becomes macroscopic and has the form $|\psi>\propto\sum_{j} e^{i\phi_{j}}\hat{b}^{\dagger N}_{j}|{\rm vac}>$, where $N$ is the total number of atoms and the sum ranges over the energy-degenerate sites.

Infinite cycles of interacting bosons

Abstract:In the first-quantized description of bosonic systems permutation cycles formed by the particles play a fundamental role. In the ideal Bose gas Bose-Enstein condensation (BEC) is signaled by the appearance of infinite cycles. When the particles interact, the two phenomena may not be simultaneous, the existence of infinite cycles is necessary but not sufficient for BEC. We demonstrate that their appearance is always accompanied by a singularity in the thermodynamic quantities which in three and four dimensions can be as strong as a one-sided divergence of the isothermal compressibility. Arguments are presented that long-range interactions can give rise to unexpected results, such as the absence of infinite cycles in three dimensions for long-range repulsion or their presence in one and two dimensions if the pair potential has a long attractive tail.

We consider a one-dimensional, trapped, focusing Bose gas where [math] bosons interact with each other via both a two-body interaction potential of the form [math] and an attractive three-body interaction potential of the form [math], where [math], [math], [math], [math], and [math]. The system is stable either for any [math] as long as [math] —the critical strength of the one-dimensional focusing quintic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation— or for [math] when [math]. In the former case, fixing [math], we prove that in the mean-field limit the many-body system exhibits the Bose–Einstein condensation on the cubic-quintic NLS ground states. When assuming [math] and [math] as [math], with the former convergence being slow enough and "not faster" than the latter, we prove that the ground state of the system is fully condensed on the (unique) solution to the quintic NLS equation. In the latter case, [math] fixed, we obtain the convergence of many-body energy for small [math] when [math] is fixed. Finally, we analyze the behavior of the many-body ground states when the convergence [math] is "faster" than the slow enough convergence [math].

Abstract:We consider a one-dimensional, trapped, focusing Bose gas where $N$ bosons interact with each other via both a two-body interaction potential of the form $a N^{\alpha-1} U(N^\alpha(x-y))$ and an attractive three-body interaction potential of the form $-b N^{2\beta-2} W(N^\beta(x-y,x-z))$, where $a\in\mathbb{R}$, $b,\alpha>0$, $0<\beta<1$, $U, W \geq 0$, and $\int_{\mathbb{R}}U(x) \mathop{}\!\mathrm{d}x = 1 = \iint_{\mathbb{R}^2} W(x,y) \mathop{}\!\mathrm{d}x \mathop{}\!\mathrm{d}y$. The system is stable either for any $a\in\mathbb{R}$ as long as $b<\mathfrak{b} := 3\pi^2/2$ (the critical strength of the 1D focusing quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation) or for $a \geq 0$ when $b=\mathfrak{b}$. Hamiltonian for a Bose gas with Contact Interactions

Abstract:We study the Hamiltonian for a Bose gas in three dimensions of $N \geq 3$ spinless particles interacting via zero-range or contact interactions. Such interactions are described by (singular) boundary conditions satisfied at the coincidence hyperplanes, i.e., when the coordinates of two particles coincide. It is known that if one imposes the same kind of boundary condition of the one-body problem with a point interaction then one is inevitably led to a Hamiltonian unbounded from below and therefore unstable. This is due to the fact that the interaction becomes too strong and attractive when the coordinates of three or more particles coincide. In order to avoid such instability property, we develop a suggestion formulated by Minlos and Faddeev in 1962 and introduce a slightly modified boundary condition which reduces the strength of the interaction when the positions of the particles $i, j$ coincide in the following cases: a) a third particle approaches the common position of $i$ and $j$; b) two other particles approach to each other. In all the other cases the usual boundary condition is restored. Following a quadratic form approach, we prove that the Hamiltonian characterized by such modified boundary condition is self-adjoint and bounded from below. We also show that the N-body Hamiltonian with contact interactions obtained years ago by Albeverio, Høegh-Krohn and Streit using the theory of Dirichlet forms (J. Math. Phys., 18, 907--917, 1977) is a special case of our Hamiltonian.

Bose-Einstein condensation of interacting bosons: A two-step proof

Abstract:We prove two equilibrium properties of a system of interacting atoms in three or higher dimensional continuous space. (i) If the particles interact via pair potentials of a nonnegative Fourier transform, their self-organization into infinite permutation cycles is simultaneous with off-diagonal long-range order. If the cycle lengths tend to infinity not slower than the square of the linear extension of the system, there is also Bose-Einstein condensation. (ii) If the pair potential is also nonnegative, cycles composed of a nonzero fraction of the total number of particles do appear if the density exceeds a temperature-dependent threshold value. The two together constitute the proof that in such a system Bose-Einstein condensation takes place at high enough densities.

Abstract:We find stationary excited states of a one-dimensional system of $N$ spinless point bosons with repulsive interaction and zero boundary conditions by numerically solving the time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The solutions are compared with the exact ones found in the Bethe-ansatz approach. We show that the $j$th stationary excited state of a nonuniform condensate of atoms corresponds to a Bethe-ansatz solution with the quantum numbers $n_{1}=n_{2}=\ldots =n_{N}=j+1$. On the other hand, such $n_{1},\ldots,n_{N}$ correspond to a condensate of $N$ elementary excitations (in the present case the latter are the Bogoliubov quasiparticles with the quasimomentum $\hbar \pi j/L$, where $L$ is the system size). Thus, each stationary excited state of the condensate is ``doubly coherent'', since it corresponds simultaneously to a condensate of $N$ atoms and a condensate of $N$ elementary excitations. We find the energy $E$ and the particle density profile $\rho (x)$ for such states. The possibility of experimental production of these states is also discussed.
