Abstract:The area law for entanglement entropy fundamentally reflects the complexity of quantum many-body systems, demonstrating ground states of local Hamiltonians to be represented with low computational complexity. While this principle is well-established in one-dimensional systems, little is known beyond 1D cases, and attempts to generalize the area law on infinite-dimensional graphs have largely been disproven. In this work, for non-critical ground states of Hamiltonians on fully connected graphs, we establish a generalized area law up to a polylogarithmic factor in system size, by effectively reducing the boundary area to a constant scale for interactions between subsystems. This result implies an efficient approximation of the ground state by the matrix product state up to an approximation error of $1/\text{poly}(n)$. As the core technique, we develop the mean-field renormalization group approach, which rigorously guarantees efficiency by systematically grouping regions of the system and iteratively approximating each as a product state. This approach provides a rigorous pathway to efficiently simulate ground states of complex systems, advancing our understanding of infinite-dimensional quantum many-body systems and their entanglement structures.

Off-Shell Quantum Mechanics as Factorization Algebras on Intervals

Abstract:We present, for the harmonic oscillator and the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ system, an alternative formulation of quantum mechanics that is `off-shell': it is based on classical off-shell configurations and thus similar to the path integral. The core elements are Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) algebras and factorization algebras, following a program by Costello and Gwilliam. The BV algebras are the spaces of quantum observables ${\rm Obs}^q(I)$ given by the symmetric algebra of polynomials in compactly supported functions on some interval $I\subset\mathbb{R}$, which can be viewed as functionals on the dynamical variables. Generalizing associative algebras, factorization algebras include in their data a topological space, which here is $\mathbb{R}$, and an assignment of a vector space to each open set, which here is the assignment of ${\rm Obs}^q(I)$ to each open interval $I$. The central structure maps are bilinear ${\rm Obs}^q(I_1)\otimes {\rm Obs}^q(I_2)\rightarrow {\rm Obs}^q(J)$ for disjoint intervals $I_1$ and $I_2$ contained in an interval $J$, which here is the wedge product of the symmetric algebra. We prove, as the central result of this paper, that this factorization algebra is quasi-isomorphic to the factorization algebra of `on-shell' quantum mechanics. In this we extend previous work by including half-open and closed intervals, and by generalizing to the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ system.

Entanglement area law in interacting bosons: from Bose-Hubbard, $ϕ$4, and beyond

Abstract:The entanglement area law is a universal principle that characterizes the information structure in quantum many-body systems and serves as the foundation for modern algorithms based on tensor network representations. Historically, the area law has been well understood under two critical assumptions: short-range interactions and bounded local energy. However, extending the area law beyond these assumptions has been a long-sought goal in quantum many-body theory. This challenge is especially pronounced in interacting boson systems, where the breakdown of the bounded energy assumption is universal and poses significant difficulties. In this work, we prove the area law for one-dimensional interacting boson systems including the long-range interactions. Our model encompasses the Bose-Hubbard class and the $\phi4$ class, two of the most fundamental models in quantum condensed matter physics, statistical mechanics, and high-energy physics. This result achieves the resolution of the area law that incorporates both the challenges of unbounded local energy and long-range interactions in a unified manner. Additionally, we establish an efficiency-guaranteed approximation of the quantum ground states using Matrix Product States (MPS). These results significantly advance our understanding of quantum complexity by offering new insights into how bosonic parameters and interaction decay rates influence entanglement. Our findings provide crucial theoretical foundations for simulating long-range interacting cold atomic systems, which are central to modern quantum technologies, and pave the way for more efficient simulation techniques in future quantum applications.

Abstract:We study the applicability of the formula that factors the trace of the diagonal part of spin operator products in the case of a relatively small number of particles of an isolated spin system. The validity of this formula for a large number of particles follows from the basic principles of quantum statistical mechanics. The spin system under consideration includes dipole–dipole interaction and the Zeeman interaction with an external magnetic field. We establish that the accuracy of this formula monotonically increases as the magnetic field increases. At the same time, the dependence on the number of particles in the range for various configurations turns out to be sharply nonmonotone.

Deciding finiteness of bosonic dynamics with tunable interactions

Abstract:In this work we are motivated by factorization of bosonic quantum dynamics and we study the corresponding Lie algebras, which can potentially be infinite dimensional. To characterize such factorization, we identify conditions for these Lie algebras to be finite dimensional. We consider cases where each free Hamiltonian term is itself an element of the generated Lie algebra. In our approach, we develop new tools to systematically divide skew-hermitian bosonic operators into appropriate subspaces, and construct specific sequences of skew-hermitian operators that are used to gauge the dimensionality of the Lie algebras themselves. The significance of our result relies on conditions that constrain only the independently controlled generators in a particular Hamiltonian, thereby providing an effective algorithm for verifying the finiteness of the generated Lie algebra. In addition, our results are tightly connected to mathematical work where the polynomials of creation and annihilation operators are known as the Weyl algebra. Our work paves the way for better understanding factorization of bosonic dynamics relevant to quantum control and quantum technology.

Abstract:We develop vertex and factorisation algebra analogues of the theory of quasitriangular bialgebras. Analogously to the classical theory, we prove their categories of representations are controlled by spectral R-matrices. In the vertex algebra case this generalises previous notions due to Etingof-Kazhdan and Frenkel-Reshetikhin. Finally we give examples, including Borcherds twists and homology vertex algebras.

Area Law Violations and Quantum Phase Transitions in Modified Motzkin Walk Spin Chains

Abstract:Area law violations for entanglement entropy in the form of a square root has recently been studied for one-dimensional frustration-free quantum systems based on the Motzkin walks and their variations. Here we consider a Motzkin walk with a different Hilbert space on each step of the walk spanned by elements of a {\it Symmetric Inverse Semigroup} with the direction of each step governed by its algebraic structure. This change alters the number of paths allowed in the Motzkin walk and introduces a ground state degeneracy sensitive to boundary perturbations. We study the frustration-free spin chains based on three symmetric inverse semigroups, $\cS^3_1$, $\cS^3_2$ and $\cS^2_1$. The system based on $\cS^3_1$ and $\cS^3_2$ provide examples of quantum phase transitions in one dimensions with the former exhibiting a transition between the area law and a logarithmic violation of the area law and the latter providing an example of transition from logarithmic scaling to a square root scaling in the system size, mimicking a colored $\cS^3_1$ system. The system with $\cS^2_1$ is much simpler and produces states that continue to obey the area law.

Exact volume-law entangled eigenstates in a large class of spin models

Abstract:Exact solutions for excited states in non-integrable quantum Hamiltonians have revealed novel dynamical phenomena that can occur in quantum many-body systems. This work proposes a method to analytically construct a specific set of volume-law-entangled exact excited eigenstates in a large class of spin Hamiltonians. In particular, we show that all spin chains that satisfy a simple set of conditions host exact volume-law eigenstates in the middle of their spectra. Examples of physically relevant spin chains of this type include the transverse-field Ising model, PXP model, spin-$S$ $XY$ model, and spin-$S$ Kitaev chain. Although these eigenstates are highly atypical in their structure, they are thermal with respect to local observables. Our framework also unifies many recent constructions of volume-law entangled eigenstates in the literature. Finally, we show that a similar construction also generalizes to spin models on graphs in arbitrary dimensions.

Abstract:We deduce factorization properties for a quasi-Banach module over a quasi-Banach algebra. Especially we extend a result by Hewitt and prove that if any such algebra which possess a bounded left approximate identity, then any element in the module can be factorized. As applications, we deduce factorization properties for Wiener amalgam spaces, for an extended family of modulation spaces and for Schatten symbol classes in pseudo-differential calculus under multiplications like convolutions, twisted convolutions and symbolic products. For example we show for Wiener amalgam spaces that WL^{1,r}*WL^{p,q}=WL^{p,q} when r in (0,1], and p and q are finite and larger than r. In particular we improve Rudin's identity L^1*L^1=L^1.

Abstract:We present a review of the relations between various equations for maximal cut banana Feynman diagrams, i.e. amplitudes with propagators substituted with $\delta$-functions. We consider both equal and generic masses. There are three types of equation to consider: those in coordinate space, their Fourier transform and Picard-Fuchs equations originating from the parametric representation. First, we review the properties of the corresponding differential operators themselves, mainly their factorization properties at the equal mass locus and their form at special values of the dimension. Then we study the relation between the Fourier transform of the coordinate space equations and the Picard-Fuchs equations and show that they are related by factorization as well. The equations in question are the counterparts of the Virasoro constraints in the much-better studied theory of eigenvalue matrix models and are the first step towards building a full-fledged theory of Feynman integrals, which will reveal their hidden integrable structure.

Abstract:Using a flexible form for ladder operators that incorporates confluent hypergeometric functions, we show how one can determine all of the discrete energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the time-independent Schrödinger equation via a single factorization step and the satisfaction of boundary (or normalizability) conditions. This approach determines the bound states of all exactly solvable problems whose wavefunctions can be expressed in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions. It is an alternative that shares aspects of the conventional differential equation approach and Schrödinger's factorization method, but is different from both. We also explain how this approach relates to Natanzon's treatment of the same problem and illustrate how to numerically determine nontrivial potentials that can be solved this way.

Abstract:Representations of vertex operator algebras define sheaves of coinvariants and conformal blocks on moduli of stable pointed curves. Assuming certain finiteness and semisimplicity conditions, we prove that such sheaves satisfy the factorization conjecture and consequently are vector bundles. Factorization is essential to a recursive formulation of invariants, like ranks and Chern classes, and to produce new constructions of rational conformal field theories and cohomological field theories.

Entanglement entropy bounds for pure states of rapid decorrelation

Abstract:For pure states of multi-dimensional quantum lattice systems, which in a convenient computational basis have amplitude and phase structure of sufficiently rapid decorrelation, we construct high fidelity approximations of relatively low complexity. These are used for a conditional proof of area-law bounds for the states' entanglement entropy. The condition is also shown to imply exponential decay of the state's mutual information between disjoint regions, and hence exponential clustering of local observables. The applicability of the general results is demonstrated on the quantum Ising model in transverse field. Combined with available model-specific information on spin-spin correlations, we establish an area-law type bound on the entanglement in the model's subcritical ground states, valid in all dimensions and up to the model's quantum phase transition.

Abstract:We prove cocontinuity of the $\max$-tensor product of C*-categories and develop a framework to perform factorization homology in a C*-setting. In such context, we specialize some results of D. Ben-Zvi, A. Brochier and D. Jordan. As a consequence of our constructions, we realize quantum Hamiltonian reduction in terms of bimodules over a factor $N$. We also provide a GNS-type reconstruction theorem for C*-algebra objects of in categories of bimodules over a II_1-factor, enhancing a realization theorem due to C. Jones and D. Penneys.

A Q-operator for open spin chains II: boundary factorization

Abstract:One of the features of Baxter's Q-operators for many closed spin chain models is that all transfer matrices arise as products of two Q-operators with shifts in the spectral parameter. In the representation-theoretical approach to Q-operators, underlying this is a factorization formula for L-operators (solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation associated to particular infinite-dimensional representations). To have such a formalism to open spin chains, one needs a factorization identity for solutions of the reflection equation (boundary Yang-Baxter equation) associated to these representations. In the case of quantum affine $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ and diagonal K-matrices, we derive such an identity using the recently formulated theory of universal K-matrices for quantum affine algebras.

Anomalous diffusion and factor ordering in (1+1)-dimensional Lorentzian quantum gravity

Abstract:Using properties of diffusion according to a quantum heat kernel constructed as an expectation over classical heat kernels on $S^1$, we probe the non-manifold-like nature of quantized space in a model of (1+1)-dimensional quantum gravity. By computing the mean squared displacement of a diffusing particle, we find that diffusion is anomalous, behaving similarly to that on a porous substrate, network, or fractal over short distances. The walk dimension of the path for a particle diffusing in quantized space is calculated to have an infimum of 4, rising to arbitrarily large values depending on a parameter labeling the choice of factor ordering in the quantum Hamiltonian for our model and figuring in the asymptotic behavior of the wavefunction used to construct the quantum heat kernel. Additionally, we derive an expansion for return probability of a diffusing particle, whose modifications from the classical power-series form depend on the factor-ordering parameter.

Abstract:A formulation is given whereby the grand partition function of a many-body system satisfying Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac statistics is expressed in terms of certain $U$ functions defined for the same system with Boltzmann statistics. It is then shown that these $U$ functions can be evaluated in successive approximations in terms of a binary kernel $B$ which can be computed from a solution of the two-body problem. The approach to the limit of infinite volume is studied. The example of a hard sphere interaction is discussed in some detail.
