Abstract:In this paper we present an unconditional proof of Wojtkowski's Ergodicity Conjecture for almost every system of 1D perfectly elastic balls falling down in a half line under constant gravitational acceleration. Namely, by introducing a new algebraic approach, we prove that almost every such system is (completely hyperbolic and) ergodic.

Abstract:We present a new route to ergodicity breaking via Hilbert space fragmentation that displays an unprecedented level of robustness. Our construction relies on a single emergent (prethermal) conservation law. In the limit when the conservation law is exact, we prove the emergence of Hilbert space fragmentation with an exponential number of frozen configurations. These configurations are low-entanglement states in the middle of the energy spectrum and therefore constitute examples of quantum many-body scars. We further prove that every frozen configuration is absolutely stable to arbitrary perturbations, to all finite orders in perturbation theory. In contrast to previous constructions, our proof is not limited to symmetric perturbations, or to perturbations with compact support, but also applies to perturbations with long-range tails, and even to arbitrary geometrically nonlocal k -body perturbations, as long as k/L→0 in the thermodynamic limit, where L is linear system size. Additionally, we identify one-form U(1) charges characterizing some nonfrozen sectors, and discuss the dynamics starting from typical initial conditions, which we argue is best interpreted in terms of the magnetohydrodynamics of the emergent one-form symmetry. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.040401 © 2024 American Physical Society

Ergodic theorems for continuous-time quantum walks on crystal lattices and the torus

Abstract:We give several quantum dynamical analogs of the classical Kronecker-Weyl theorem, which says that the trajectory of free motion on the torus along almost every direction tends to equidistribute. As a quantum analog, we study the quantum walk $\exp(-i t \Delta) \psi$ starting from a localized initial state $\psi$. Then the flow will be ergodic if this evolved state becomes equidistributed as time goes on. We prove that this is indeed the case for evolutions on the flat torus, provided we start from a point mass, and we prove discrete analogs of this result for crystal lattices. On some periodic graphs, the mass spreads out non-uniformly, on others it stays localized. Finally, we give examples of quantum evolutions on the sphere which do not equidistribute.

Abstract:We prove here that in the Theorem on Local Ergodicity for Semi-Dispersive Billiards (proved by N. I. Chernov and Ya. G. Sinai in 1987) the condition of the so called ``Ansatz'' can be dropped. That condition assumed that almost every singular phase point had a hyperbolic trajectory after the singularity. Having this condition dropped, the cited theorem becomes much stronger and easier to apply. At the end of the paper two immediate corollaries of this improvement are discussed: One of them is the (fully hyperbolic) Bernoulli mixing property of every hard disk system (D=2), the other one claims that the ergodic components of every hard ball system ($D\ge3$) are open.

Flocking under Fast and Large Jumps: Stability, Chaos, and Traveling Waves

Abstract:We study a model for flocking given by a $n$-particle system under which each particle jumps forward by a random amount, independently sampled from a given distribution $\theta$, with rate given by a non-increasing function $w$ of its signed distance from the system center of mass. This model was introduced in Balázs et. al. (2014) and some of its properties were studied for the case when $w$ is bounded. In the current work we are interested in the setting where $w$ is unbounded, and this feature results in a stochastic dynamical system for interacting particles with fast and large jumps for which little is available in the literature. We characterize the large $n$ limit (the so-called `fluid limit') of the empirical measure process associated with the system and prove a propagation of chaos result. Next, for the centered $n$-particle system, by constructing suitable Lyapunov functions, we establish existence and uniqueness of stationary distributions and study their tail properties. In the special case where $w$ is an exponential function and $\theta$ is an exponential distribution, by establishing that all stationary solutions of the McKean-Vlasov equation must be the unique fixed point of the equation, we prove a propagation of chaos result at $t=\infty$ and establish convergence of the particle system, starting from stationarity, in the large $n$ limit, to a traveling wave solution of the McKean-Vlasov equation. The proof of this result may be of interest for other interacting particle systems where convexity properties or functional inequalities generally used for establishing such a result are not available. Our work answers several open problems posed in Balázs et. al.

Effects of stickiness in the classical and quantum ergodic lemon billiard

Abstract:We study the classical and quantum ergodic lemon billiard introduced by Heller and Tomsovic in Phys. Today 46(7), 38 (1993)PHTOAD0031-922810.1063/1.881358, for the case B=1/2, which is a classically ergodic system (without a rigorous proof) exhibiting strong stickiness regions around a zero-measure bouncing ball modes. The structure of the classical stickiness regions is uncovered in the S-plots introduced by Lozej [Phys. Rev. E 101, 052204 (2020)10.1103/PhysRevE.101.052204]. A unique classical transport or diffusion time cannot be defined. As a consequence the quantum states are characterized by the following nonuniversal properties: (i) All eigenstates are chaotic but localized as exhibited in the Poincaré-Husimi (PH) functions. (ii) The entropy localization measure A (also the normalized inverse participation ratio) has a nonuniversal distribution, typically bimodal, thus deviating from the beta distribution, the latter one being characteristic of uniformly chaotic systems with no stickiness regions. (iii) The energy-level spacing distribution is Berry-Robnik-Brody (BRB), capturing two effects: the quantally divided phase space (because most of the PH functions are either the inner-ones or the outer-ones, dictated by the classical stickiness, with an effective parameter μ_{1} measuring the size of the inner region bordered by the sticky invariant object, namely, a cantorus), and the localization of PH functions characterized by the level repulsion (Brody) parameter β. (iv) In the energy range considered (between 20 000 states to 400 000 states above the ground state) the picture (the structure of the eigenstates and the statistics of the energy spectra) is not changing qualitatively, as β fluctuates around 0.8, while μ_{1} decreases almost monotonically, with increasing energy.
Off-Lattice Random Walks with Excluded Volume: A New Method of Generation, Proof of Ergodicity and Numerical Results

Abstract:We describe a new algorithm, the reflection method, to generate off-lattice random walks of specified, though arbitrarily large, thickness in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and prove that our method is ergodic on the space of thick walks. The data resulting from our implementation of this method is consistent with the scaling of the squared radius of gyration of random walks, with no thickness constraint. Based on this, we use the data to describe the complex relationship between the presence and nature of knotting and size, thickness and shape of the random walk. We extend the current understanding of excluded volume by expanding the range of analysis of how the squared radius of gyration scales with length and thickness. We also examine the profound effect of thickness on knotting in open chains. We will quantify how thickness effects the size of thick open chains, calculating the growth exponent for squared radius of gyration as a function of thickness. We will also show that for radius $r \leq 0.4$, increasing thickness by 0.1 decreases the probability of knot formation by 50% or more.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the dynamics of a ball elastically bouncing off an infinitely heavy plate. Suppose the plate periodically moves in vertical direction and the ball between impacts is only subjected to the force with quadratic potential U(z)=α2z2 , where (4α)−1/2 is Diophantine. Without imposing any assumption on the motion of plate besides smoothness, we prove that the ball never goes to infinity. Comparing to previous works, we drop certain assumptions which are usually imposed on the motion of the plate to guarantee twist conditions. This result depends on the famed Herman's Last Geometric Theorem, which is given by Herman no later than 1995 in his "Seminaire de Systemes Dynamiques" at the Universite Paris VII and also in his 1998 ICM address (Herman, 1998). Its proof is also provided by Fayad and Krikorian (Fayad and Krikorian, 2009) in 2009 and recently we obtained a slightly different version (Ma and Xu, 2023), which is more convenient for this physical model.

KPZ equation limit of sticky Brownian motion

Abstract:We consider the motion of a particle under a continuum random environment whose distribution is given by the Howitt-Warren flow. In the moderate deviation regime, we establish that the quenched density of the motion of the particle (after appropriate centering and scaling) converges weakly to the $(1+1)$ dimensional stochastic heat equation driven by multiplicative space-time white noise. Our result confirms physics predictions and computations in [LDT17, BLD20, HCGCC23] and is the first rigorous instance of such weak convergence in the moderate deviation regime. Our proof relies on a certain Girsanov transform and works for all Howitt-Warren flows with finite and nonzero characteristic measures. Our results capture universality in the sense that the limiting distribution depends on the flow only via the total mass of the characteristic measure. As a corollary of our results, we prove that the fluctuations of the maximum of an $N$-point sticky Brownian motion are given by the KPZ equation plus an independent Gumbel on timescales of order $(\log N)^2.$

Quantum Ergodicity and the Analysis of Semiclassical Pseudodifferential Operators

Abstract:This undergraduate thesis is concerned with developing the tools of differential geometry and semiclassical analysis needed to understand the the quantum ergodicity theorem of Schnirelman (1974), Zelditch (1987), and Colin de Verdière (1985) and the quantum unique ergodicity conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak (1994). The former states that, on any Riemannian manifold with negative curvature or ergodic geodesic flow, the eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator equidistribute in phase space with density 1. Under the same assumptions, the latter states that the eigenfunctions induce a sequence of Wigner probability measures on fibers of the Hamiltonian in phase space, and these measures converge in the weak-* topology to the uniform Liouville measure. If true, the conjecture implies that such eigenfunctions equidistribute in the high-eigenvalue limit with no exceptional "scarring" patterns. This physically means that the finest details of chaotic Hamiltonian systems can never reflect their quantum-mechanical behaviors, even in the semiclassical limit. The main contribution of this thesis is to contextualize the question of quantum ergodicity and quantum unique ergodicity in an elementary analytic and geometric framework. In addition to presenting and summarizing numerous important proofs, such as Colin de Verdière's proof of the quantum ergodicity theorem, we perform graphical simulations of certain billiard flows and expositorily discuss several themes in the study of quantum chaos.

Abstract:The paper considers macroscopic behavior of a Fermi–Dirac particle system. We prove the L 1 -compactness of velocity averages of weak solutions of the Boltzmann equation for Fermi–Dirac particles in a periodic box with the collision kernel b (cos θ)| ρ − ρ * | γ , which corresponds to very soft potentials: −5 < γ ≤ −3 with a weak angular cutoff: ∫ 0 π b (cos θ)sin 3 θ d θ < ∞. Our proof for the averaging compactness is based on the entropy inequality, Hausdorff–Young inequality, the L ∞ -bounds of the solutions, and a specific property of the value-range of the exponent γ. Once such an averaging compactness is proven, the proof of the existence of weak solutions will be relatively easy.

Abstract:The non-bijective version of Wigner's theorem states that a map which is defined on the set of self-adjoint, rank-one projections (or pure states) of a complex Hilbert space and which preserves the transition probability between any two elements, is induced by a linear or antilinear isometry. We present a completely new, elementary and very short proof of this famous theorem which is very important in quantum mechanics. We do not assume bijectivity of the mapping or separability of the underlying space like in many other proofs.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide relations among the following properties: (a) the tail triviality of a probability measure $\mu$ on the configuration space ${\boldsymbol\Upsilon}$; (b) the finiteness of the $L^2$-transportation-type distance $\bar{\mathsf d}_{\boldsymbol\Upsilon}$; (c) the irreducibility of $\mu$-symmetric Dirichlet forms on ${\boldsymbol\Upsilon}$. As an application, we obtain the ergodicity (i.e., the convergence to the equilibrium) of interacting infinite diffusions having logarithmic interaction arisen from determinantal/permanental point processes including $\mathrm{sine}_{2}$, $\mathrm{Airy}_{2}$, $\mathrm{Bessel}_{\alpha, 2}$ ($\alpha \ge 1$), and $\mathrm{Ginibre}$ point processes, in particular, the case of unlabelled Dyson Brownian motion is covered. For the proof, the number rigidity of point processes in the sense of Ghosh--Peres plays a key role.

Abstract:We study ergodic properties of partially hyperbolic systems whose central direction is mostly contracting. Earlier work of Bonatti, Viana about existence and finitude of physical measures is extended to the case of local diffeomorphisms. Moreover, we prove that such systems constitute a C^2-open set in which statistical stability is a dense property. In contrast, all mostly contracting systems are shown to be stable under small random perturbations.

Abstract:We give a new proof of existence as well as two proofs of uniqueness of the invariant measure of the open-boundary KPZ equation on [0,1], for all possible choices of inhomogeneous Neumann boundary data. Both proofs yield an exponential convergence result in total variation when combined with the strong Feller property which was recently established in [Knizel-Matetski, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2211.04466" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.04466">arXiv:2211.04466</a>]. An important ingredient in both proofs is the construction of a compact state space for the Markov operator to act on, which measurably contains all of the usual Hölder spaces modulo constants. Along the way, the strong Feller property is extended to this larger class of initial conditions. The arguments do not rely on exact descriptions of the invariant measures, and some of the results generalize to the case of a spatially colored noise and other boundary conditions.

Abstract:Motivated by the well-known phase-space portrait of the nonlinear pendulum, the purpose of this paper is to obtain convergence rates in the ergodic theorem for flows in the plane that have arbitrarily slow trajectories. Considering bounded periodic trajectories near the heteroclinic orbits, it is shown that despite lacking a spectral gap, there exists a functional space (which is a strict subset of $L^2$) on which time averages converge uniformly to spatial averages (with an explicit rate). The main ingredient of the proof is an estimate of the density of the spectrum of the generator of the flow near zero.

Abstract:Eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) represents a breakthrough in many-body physics since it allows to link thermalization of physical observables with the applicability of random matrix theory (RMT). Recent years were also extremely fruitful in exploring possible counterexamples to thermalization, ranging, among others, from integrability, single-particle chaos, many-body localization, many-body scars, to Hilbert-space fragmentation. In all these cases the conventional ETH is violated. However, it remains elusive how the conventional ETH breaks down when one approaches the boundaries of ergodicity, and whether the range of validity of the conventional ETH coincides with the validity of RMT-like spectral statistics. Here we bridge this gap and we introduce a scenario of the ETH breakdown in many-body quantum systems, dubbed fading ergodicity regime, which establishes a link between the conventional ETH and non-ergodic behavior. We conjecture this scenario to be relevant for the description of finite many-body systems at the boundaries of ergodicity, and we provide numerical and analytical arguments for its validity in the quantum sun model of ergodicity breaking phase transition. For the latter, we provide evidence that the breakdown of the conventional ETH is not associated with the breakdown of the RMT-like spectral statistics.

Abstract:We present an exact formula for the dynamics of $N$ hard spheres of radius $r>0$ on an infinite line which evolve under the assumption that total linear momentum and kinetic energy of the system is conserved for all times. This model is commonly known as the one-dimensional Tonks gas or the hard rod gas model. Our exact formula is expressed as a sum over the Weyl group associated to the root system $A_{N-1}$ and is valid for all initial data in a full-measure subset of the tangent bundle of the hard sphere table. As an application of our explicit formula, we produce a simple proof that the associated billiard flow admits the Liouville measure on the tangent bundle of the hard sphere table as an invariant measure.

Towards absolutely stable ergodicity breaking in two and three dimensions

Abstract:We propose new physically reasonable systems capable of avoiding ergodicity at infinite time in the thermodynamic limit, even with generic perturbations and when coupled to a heat bath. In two dimensions, the rainbow loop soup has (stretched) exponentially numerous absolutely stable nonergodic states with diverging energy but vanishing energy density. In three dimensions the rainbow membrane soup has (stretched) exponentially numerous nonergodic states with diverging energy barriers, leading to infinite-time robust ergodicity breaking that even survives coupling to a nonzero temperature heat bath. We describe our results in the language of exact emergent symmetries and demonstrate how the systems avoid common instabilities. Our construction naturally connects to quantum dimer models, topologically ordered systems, the group word construction, and Hamiltonians whose low-energy eigenstates exhibit anomalous entanglement entropy.
