Abstract:It is possible to solve the Einstein constraint equations as an evolutionary rather than an elliptic system. Here we consider the Gauss constraint in electrodynamics as a toy model for this, and produce an initial data set for an electromagnetic pulse surrounded by vacuum.

Abstract:We develop a gluing construction which adds scaled and truncated asymptotically Euclidean solutions of the Einstein constraint equations to compact solutions with potentially non-trivial cosmological constants. The result is a one-parameter family of initial data which has ordinary and scaled "point-particle" limits analogous to those of Gralla and Wald ("A rigorous derivation of gravitational self-force," Class. Quantum Grav. 2008). In particular, we produce examples of initial data which generalize Schwarzschild - de Sitter initial data and gluing theorems of IMP-type.

3D Evolution of a Good-Bad-Ugly-F Model on Compactified Hyperboloidal Slices

Abstract:The Good-Bad-Ugly-F model is a system of semi-linear wave equations that mimics the asymptotic form of the Einstein field equations in generalized harmonic gauge with specific constraint damping and suitable gauge source functions. These constraint additions and gauge source functions eliminate logarithmic divergences appearing at the leading order in the asymptotic expansion of the metric components. In this work, as a step towards using compactified hyperboloidal slices in numerical relativity, we evolve this model numerically in spherical symmetry, axisymmetry and full 3d on such hyperboloidal slices. Promising numerical results are found in all cases. Our results show that nonlinear systems of wave equations with the asymptotics of the Einstein field equations in the above form can be reliably captured within hyperboloidal numerical evolution without assuming symmetry.

Abstract:In this paper we develop a new approach to the gluing problem in General Relativity, that is, the problem of matching two solutions of the Einstein equations along a spacelike or characteristic (null) hypersurface. In contrast to the previous constructions, the new perspective actively utilizes the nonlinearity of the constraint equations. As a result, we are able to remove the $10$-dimensional spaces of obstructions to the null and spacelike (asymptotically flat) gluing problems, previously known in the literature. In particular, we show that any asymptotically flat spacelike initial data can be glued to the Schwarzschild initial data of mass $M$ for any $M>0$ sufficiently large. More generally, compared to the celebrated result of Corvino-Schoen, our methods allow us to choose ourselves the Kerr spacelike initial data that is being glued onto. As in our earlier work, our primary focus is the analysis of the null problem, where we develop a new technique of combining low-frequency linear analysis with high-frequency nonlinear control. The corresponding spacelike results are derived a posteriori by solving a characteristic initial value problem.

Abstract:We study the conformational equilibria of two peptides using a novel statistical mechanics approach designed for calculating free energy differences between highly dis-similar conformational states. Our results elucidate the contrasting roles of entropy in implicitly solvated leucine dipeptide and decaglycine. The method extends earlier work by Voter, and overcomes the notorious "overlap" problem in free energy computations by constructing a mathematically equivalent calculation with high conformational similarity. The approach requires only equilibrium simulations of the two states of interest, without the need for sampling transition states. We discuss extensions of the approach to binding affinity estimation and explicitly solvated systems, as well as possible optimizations.

Model for an electrostatic capacitor in Einstein-Maxwell theory

Abstract:A general relativistic model of a parallel-plate electrostatic capacitor is presented. The spacetime is a solution to the Einstein--Maxwell equations and involves class of solution previously studied by Veselý and Žofka (VŽ). In particular, the parts containing curvature singularities are cut out and the remaining regular section is glued to asymptotically-Minkowski spacetimes. In essence, this results in a curved electro-vacuum VŽ spacetime sandwiched on both sides by exterior spacetimes with vanishing electromagnetic fields. Junction conditions require the presence of charged matter on the boundaries. We interpret this configuration as a parallel-plate capacitor with gravitational effects induced by the strong electric fields. The spherical capacitor is briefly considered.

Abstract:We prove a strong localized gluing result for the general relativistic constraint equations (with or without cosmological constant) in spatial dimensions. We glue an -rescaling of an asymptotically flat data set into the neighborhood of a point inside of another initial data set , under a local genericity condition (non-existence of KIDs) near . As the scaling parameter tends to 0, the rescalings of normal coordinates x on X around become asymptotically flat coordinates on the asymptotically flat data set; outside of any neighborhood of on the other hand, the glued initial data converge back to . The initial data we construct enjoy polyhomogeneous regularity jointly in and the (rescaled) spatial coordinates. Applying our construction to unit mass black hole data sets and appropriate boosted Kerr initial data sets produces initial data which conjecturally evolve into the extreme mass ratio inspiral of a unit mass and a mass black hole. The proof combines a variant of the gluing method introduced by Corvino and Schoen with geometric singular analysis techniques originating in Melrose's work. On a technical level, we present a fully geometric microlocal treatment of the solvability theory for the linearized constraints map.

Abstract:We prove the existence of solutions global in time to an initial-boundary value problem for a system of partial differential equations, which consists of the equations of linear elasticity and a nonlinear nonuniformly parabolic equation of second order. The problem models the behavior in time of materials with martensitic phase transformations. This model with diffusive phase interfaces was derived from a model with sharp interfaces, whose evolution is driven by configurational forces, and can be considered to be a regularization of that model. Our existence proof, which contributes to the verification of the model, is only valid in one space dimension.

Abstract:We discuss a 3D model describing the time evolution of nematic liquid crystals in the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory, where the natural physical constraints are enforced by a singular free energy bulk potential proposed by J.M. Ball and A. Majumdar. The thermal effects are present through the component of the free energy that accounts for intermolecular interactions. The model is consistent with the general principle of thermodynamics and mathematically tractable. We identify the a priori estimates for the associated system of evolutionary partial differential equations and construct global-in-time weak solutions for arbitrary physically relevant initial data.

Abstract:The celebrated geodesic congruence equation of Raychaudhuri, together with the resulting singularity theorems of Penrose and Hawking that it enabled, yield a highly general set of conditions under which a spacetime (or, more generically, a pseudo-Riemannian manifold) is expected to become geodesically incomplete. It is a non-trivial question to ask whether (and to what extent) there exist equivalently general conditions under which one expects discrete spacetimes to become geodesically incomplete, and how these conditions might differ from those in the continuum. This article builds upon previous work, in which the conformal and covariant Z4 (CCZ4) formulation of the Cauchy problem for the Einstein field equations, with constraint-violation damping, was defined in terms of Wolfram model evolution over discrete (spatial) hypergraphs for the case of vacuum spacetimes, and proceeds to consider a minimal extension to the non-vacuum case by introducing a massive scalar field distribution, defined in either spherical or axial symmetry. Under appropriate assumptions, this scalar field distribution admits a physical interpretation as a collapsing (and, in the axially-symmetric case, uniformly rotating) dust, and we are able to show, through a combination of rigorous mathematical analysis and explicit numerical simulation, that the resulting discrete spacetimes converge asymptotically to either non-rotating Schwarzschild black hole solutions or maximally-rotating (extremal) Kerr black hole solutions, respectively. Although the assumptions used in obtaining these preliminary results are very strong, they nevertheless offer hope that a more general, perhaps ultimately ``Penrose-like'', singularity theorem may be provable in the discrete spacetime case too.

Abstract:The Marolf-Maxfield topological toy model for 2D gravity gives the full spectrum of boundary theories, but can not describe any evolution. In order to obtain the expected evolution from Hartle-Hawking state to one of the superselection sectors, we suggest to consider a correspondence between models of evaporating black holes and models of collapsing wave functions. This note explores this correspondence by equating the Marolf-Maxfield topological toy model and to the Bonifacio model of spontaneous collapse theory. The expected evolution of a matrix element due to a generator of a parameter in Marolf-Maxfield model is obtained.

Asymptotic behavior of 3-D evolutionary model of Magnetoelasticity for small data

Abstract:In this article, we consider the evolutionary model for magnetoelasticity with vanishing external magnetic field and vanishing viscosity/damping, which is a nonlinear dispersive system. The global regularity and scattering of the evolutionary model for magnetoelasticity under small size of initial data is proved. Our proof relies on the idea of vector-field method due to the quasilinearity and the presence of convective term. A key observation is that we construct a suitable energy functional including the mass quantity, which enable us provide a good decay estimates for Schrödinger flow. In particular, we establish the asymptotic behavior in both mass and energy spaces for Schrödinger map, not only for gauged equation.
Constraining $f(T,B,T_G,B_G)$ gravity by dynamical system analysis

Abstract:The evolutionary behavior of the Universe has been analysed through the dynamical system analysis in $f(T,B,T_G,B_G)$ gravity, where $T$, $B$, $T_G$, and $B_G$ respectively represent torsion, boundary term, teleparallel Gauss-Bonnet term and Gauss-Bonnet boundary term. We use the transformation, $f(T,B,T_G,B_G)=-T+\mathcal{F}(T, B, T_G, B_G)$ in order to obtain the deviation from the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity (TEGR). Two cosmological models pertaining to the functional form of $\mathcal{F}(T, B, T_G, B_G)$ have been studied. The well motivated forms are: (i) $\mathcal{F}(T, B, T_G, B_G) = f_{0} T^{m} B^{n}T_{G}^{k}$ and (ii) $\mathcal{F}(T, B, T_G, B_G)=b_{0} B + g_{0} T_{G}^{k} $. The evolutionary phases of the Universe have been identified through the detailed analysis of the critical points. Further, with the eigenvalues and phase space diagrams, the stability and attractor nature of the accelerating solution have been explored. The evolution plots have been analyzed for the corresponding cosmology and compatibility with the present observed value of standard density parameters have been shown.

Abstract:Spacetime wormholes can provide non-perturbative contributions to the gravitational path integral that make the actual number of states e S in a gravitational system much smaller than the number of states predicted by perturbative semiclassical effective field theory. The effects on the physics of the system are naturally profound in contexts in which the perturbative description actively involves N = O ( e S ) of the possible perturbative states; e.g., in late stages of black hole evaporation. Such contexts are typically associated with the existence of non-trivial quantum extremal surfaces. However, by forcing a simple topological gravity model to evolve in time, we find that such effects can also have large impact for N ≪ e S (in which case no quantum extremal surfaces can arise). In particular, even for small N , the insertion of generic operators into the path integral can cause the non-perturbative time evolution to differ dramatically from perturbative expectations. On the other hand, this discrepancy is small for the special case where the inserted operators are non-trivial only in a subspace of dimension D ≪ e S . We thus study this latter case in detail. We also discuss potential implications for more realistic gravitational systems.

A Gluing Problem for a Gauged Hyperbolic PDE

Abstract:In this project, we study the hyperbolic Abelian Higgs model in dimension $3$ at the critical coupling. The stationary solutions to the two-dimensional version of this equation have been found by Jaffe and Taubes, the so called $N$-vortex configurations. One can consider the space of all $N$-vortex configurations $M_N$ as a smooth Riemannian manifold. Stuart has proved that near the critical coupling regime, the dynamic in dimension $2$ can be approximated by a finite dimensional Hamiltonian system on the moduli space $M_2$, for suitable initial data. In this thesis, we study how to glue the $N$-vortex configurations to construct dynamical solutions in dimension $3$. Namely, we prove that if $q:[0,T)\times \mathbb{R}\to M_N$ is a wave map, then for $\epsilon>0$ small enough, there exists a solution of the Abelian Higgs model in dimension $(1+3)$ on $[0,\frac{T_0}{\epsilon})\times \mathbb{R}^3$ for some $T_0>0$ which is close to $(\phi,\alpha)(.;q(\epsilon t,\epsilon z))$ in terms of $\epsilon$, where $(\phi,\alpha)(.)$ denotes the variables of the corresponding $N$-vortex configuration. Furthermore, the other gauge field variables are small in terms of $\epsilon$. This dissertation has been supervised by Prof. Robert Jerrard.
