Abstract:Historically, there has been a trade-off in spectroscopic measurements between high spectral resolution, broadband coverage, and acquisition time. Optical frequency combs, initially envisioned for precision spectroscopy of the hydrogen atom in the ultraviolet region, are now commonly used for probing molecular rotational-vibrational transitions throughout broad spectral bands in the mid-infrared with superior accuracy, resolution and speed. Here we demonstrate acquisition of 2.5 million spectral points over the continuous wavelength range of 3.2 to 5.1 microns (frequency span 1200 cm^{-1}, resolution <100 kHz) via interleaving comb-tooth-resolved spectra acquired with a highly-coherent broadband dual-frequency-comb system based on optical subharmonic generation. With the original comb-line spacing of 115 MHz, overlaying spectra with gradually shifted comb lines we fully resolved amplitude and phase spectra of molecules with narrow Doppler-broadened lines, such as {\nu}1+{\nu}3 band of carbon disulfide (CS2) and its isotopologues. Also, we were able to observe the chemical oxidation reaction of CS2 by detecting traces of carbonyl sulfide (OCS) via its asymmetric {\nu}3 stretch band.

Abstract:Development of the optical frequency comb has revolutionised metrology and precision spectroscopy due to its ability to provide a precise and direct link between microwave and optical frequencies. A novel application of frequency comb technology that leverages both the ultrashort duration of each laser pulse and the exquisite phase coherence of a train of pulses is the generation of frequency combs in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) via high harmonic generation (HHG) in a femtosecond enhancement cavity. Until now, this method has lacked sufficient average power for applications, which has also hampered efforts to observe phase coherence of the high-repetition rate pulse train produced in the extremely nonlinear HHG process. Hence, the existence of a frequency comb in the XUV has not been confirmed. We have overcome both challenges. Here, we present generation of >200 {\mu}W per harmonic reaching 50 nm, and the observation of single-photon spectroscopy signals for both an argon transition at 82 nm and a neon transition at 63 nm. The absolute frequency of the argon transition has been determined via direct frequency comb spectroscopy. The resolved 10-MHz linewidth of the transition, limited by the transverse temperature of the argon atoms, is unprecedented in this spectral region and places a stringent upper limit on the linewidth of individual comb teeth. Due to the lack of cw lasers, these frequency combs are currently the only promising avenue towards extending ultrahigh precision spectroscopy to below the 100-nm spectral region with a wide range of applications that include spectroscopy of electronic transitions in molecules, experimental tests of bound state and many body quantum electrodynamics in He+ and He, development of next-generation "nuclear" clocks, and searches for spatial and temporal variation of fundamental constants using the enhanced sensitivity of highly charged ions.

A Multi-Harmonic NIR-UV Dual-Comb Spectrometer

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible would enable broad bandwidth electronic spectroscopy with unprecedented frequency resolution. However, there are significant challenges in generation, detection and processing of dual-comb data that have restricted its progress in this spectral region. In this work, we leverage robust 1550 nm few-cycle pulses to generate frequency combs in the UV-visible. We couple this source to a wavelength multiplexed dual-comb spectrometer and simultaneously retrieve 100 MHz comb-mode-resolved spectra over three distinct harmonics spanning 380-800 nm. The experiments highlight the path to continuous dual-comb coverage spanning 200-750 nm, offering extensive access to electronic transitions in atoms, molecules, and solids.

Abstract:Ultraviolet spectroscopy provides unique insights into the structure of matter with applications ranging from fundamental tests to photochemistry in the earth's atmosphere and astronomical observations from space telescopes. At longer wavelengths, dual-comb spectroscopy with two interfering laser frequency combs has evolved into a powerful technique that can offer simultaneously a broad spectral range and very high resolution. Here we demonstrate a photon-counting approach that can extend the unique advantages of this method into ultraviolet regions where nonlinear frequency-conversion tends to be very inefficient. Our spectrometer, based on two frequency combs of slightly different repetition frequencies, provides broad span, high resolution, frequency calibration within the accuracy of an atomic clock, and overall consistency of the spectra. We demonstrate a signal-to-noise ratio at the quantum limit and optimal use of the measurement time, provided by the multiplex recording of all spectral data on a single photo-counter. Our initial experiments are performed in the near-ultraviolet and in the visible spectral ranges with alkali-atom vapor, with a power per comb line as low as a femtowatt. This crucial step towards precision broadband spectroscopy at short wavelengths clears the path to extreme-ultraviolet dual-comb spectroscopy and, more generally, generates a new realm of applications for diagnostics at photon level, as encountered e.g., when driving single atoms or molecules.

Abstract:Dual-comb spectroscopy is becoming a highlighted topic in broadband spectrum measurement techniques because of two outstanding advantages. One is its highly stable output frequency, which leads to an appealing resolution, and the other is the omitting of moving parts, which helps achieve extreme fast sampling rate. Utilizing the traditional radio frequency linked combs, however, obstructs the dual-comb spectroscopy reaching satisfied performance because the phase noise of the radio frequency standard causes the dual-comb mutual coherence to severely degrade. Specifically, traditional frequency comb stabilizes the carrier envelope offset at a radio frequency by a self-reference system, and the order number of each output comb tooth is over a hundred thousand. Thus, the phase noise of the radio frequency reference is significantly multiplied in output optical frequency by the same order of magnitude as the tooth order number. In this paper, we demonstrate an optical frequency linked dual-comb spectrometer where the two combs are locked to a common narrow linewidth laser. In this configuration, the two combs are synchronized at an identical optical frequency, which means that the carrier envelope offset of the two combs are changed to an optical frequency and the order number of the output comb teeth are reduced by two orders of magnitude. Therefore, not only the complex and costly self-reference system can be removed but also the phase noise of the optical frequency of each comb tooth is effectively reduced, which leads to lower mutual frequency jitters and better mutual coherence. To prove the performance, we measure the v(1) + v(3) P branch of (C2H2)-C-13 molecular and the results accord well with the reported line positions and reveals a spectral resolution of 0.086 cm(-1). The average signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 200 : 1 (62.5 ms, 100 times on average) and the noise equivalent coefficient is 6.0 x 10 (6) cm (1).Hz (1/2) . This work provides a solution for pragmatic dual-comb spectroscopy with high resolution and low-cost configuration.
Ultra-broadband UV/VIS spectroscopy enabled by resonant dispersive wave emission of a frequency comb

Abstract:We introduce a novel ultra-broadband ultraviolet and visible frequency comb light source covering more than 240 THz by resonant dispersive wave emission in a gas-filled hollow-core fiber waveguide. The light source allows tuning from ~340 nm to 465 nm (645 THz to ~885 THz) with conversion efficiencies of 1.5 %. Ultra-broadband absorption spectroscopy is demonstrated by studying nitrogen dioxide, a molecular species of major atmospheric relevance strongly absorbing across the ultraviolet and visible spectral region. We show that the coherence of the 80 MHz ytterbium fiber-based frequency comb seeding the frequency up-conversion process is conserved, paving the way toward further ultra-broadband (dual) comb spectroscopy across the ultraviolet/visible range.

Abstract:Fourier transform spectroscopy based on incoherent light sources is a well-established tool in research fields from molecular spectroscopy and atmospheric monitoring to material science and biophysics. It provides broadband molecular spectra and information about the molecular structure and composition of absorptive media. However, the spectral resolution is fundamentally limited by the maximum delay range ({\Delta}$_{max}$) of the interferometer, so acquisition of high-resolution spectra implies long measurement times and large instrument size. We overcome this limit by combining the Fourier transform spectrometer with an optical frequency comb and measuring the intensities of individual comb lines by precisely matching the {\Delta}$_{max}$ to the comb line spacing. This allows measurements of absorption lines narrower than the nominal (optical path-limited) resolution without ringing effects from the instrumental lineshape and reduces the acquisition time and interferometer length by orders of magnitude.

Abstract:An electro-optic frequency comb enables frequency-agile comb-based spectroscopy without using sophisticated phase-locking electronics. Nevertheless, dense electro-optic frequency combs over broad spans have yet to be developed. In this Letter, we propose a straightforward and efficient method for electro-optic frequency comb generation with a small line spacing and a large span. This method is based on two-stage modulation: generating an 18 GHz line-spacing comb at the first stage and a 250 MHz line-spacing comb at the second stage. After generating an electro-optic frequency comb covering 1500 lines, we set up an easily established mutually coherent hybrid dual-comb interferometer, which combines the generated electro-optic frequency comb and a free-running mode-locked laser. As a proof of concept, this hybrid dual-comb interferometer is used to measure the absorption and dispersion profiles of the molecular transition of H13CN with a spectral resolution of 250 MHz.

Abstract:Optical frequency comb with evenly spaced lines over a broad bandwidth has revolutionized the fields of optical metro-logy and spectroscopy. Here, we propose a fast interleaved dual-comb spectroscopy with sub-femtometer-resolution and absolute frequency, in which two electro-optic frequency combs are swept. Electrically-modulated stabilized laser en-ables ultrahigh resolution of 0.16 fm (or 20 kHz in optical frequency) and single-shot measurement in 90 ms. Total 20 mil-lion points are recorded spanning 3.2 nm (or 400 GHz) bandwidth, corresponding to a spectral sampling rate of 2.5 x 108 points/s under Nyquist-limitation. Besides, considering the trade-off between the measurement time and spectral resolu-tion, a fast single-shot measurement is also realized in 1.6 ms with 8 fm (or 1 MHz) resolution. We demonstrate the 25 -averaged result with 30.6 dB spectral measurement signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by reducing the filter bandwidth in de-modulation. The results show great prospect for precise measurement with flexibly fast refresh time, high spectral resolu-tion, and high SNR.

Abstract:Frequency combs have revolutionized the field of optical spectroscopy, enabling researchers to probe molecular systems with a multitude of accurate and precise optical frequencies. While there have been tremendous strides in direct frequency comb spectroscopy, these approaches have been unable to record high resolution spectra on the nanosecond timescale characteristic of many physiochemical processes. Here we demonstrate a new approach to optical frequency comb generation in which a pair of electro-optic combs is produced in the near-infrared and subsequently transferred with high mutual coherence and efficiency into the mid-infrared within a single optical parametric oscillator. The high power, mutual coherence, and agile repetition rates of these combs as well as the large mid-infrared absorption of many molecular species enable fully resolved spectral transitions to be recorded in timescales as short as 20 ns. We have applied this approach to study the rapid dynamics occurring within a supersonic pulsed jet, however we note that this method is widely applicable to fields such as chemical and quantum physics, atmospheric chemistry, combustion science, and biology.

Abstract:We propose and characterize experimentally a new source of optical frequency combs for performing multi-heterodyne spectrometry. This comb modality is based on a frequency shifting loop seeded with a CW monochromatic laser. The comb lines are generated by successive passes of the CW laser through an acousto-optic frequency shifter. We report the generation of frequency combs with more than 1500 mutually coherent lines, without resorting to non-linear broadening phenomena or external electronic modulation. The comb line spacing is easily reconfigurable from tens of MHz down to the kHz region. We first use a single acousto-optic frequency comb to conduct self-heterodyne interferometry with a high frequency resolution (500 kHz). By increasing the line spacing to 80 MHz, we demonstrate molecular spectroscopy on the sub-millisecond time scale. In order to reduce the detection bandwidth, we subsequently implement an acousto-optic dual-comb spectrometer with the aid of two mutually coherent frequency shifting loops. In each architecture, the potentiality of acousto-optic frequency combs for spectroscopy is validated by spectral measurements of hydrogen cyanide in the near-infrared region.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a rapid high-resolution frequency comb spectrometer involving a mode-locked laser comb and a multi-colour laser. The heterodyne detection of the two lasers enables hundreds of thousands of Doppler-limited molecular spectra to be recorded in a second. With this device, several P-branch transitions of the H13CN (gas) 2ν3-band are simultaneously interrogated at comb-line-defined resolution (54.5 MHz or 0.5 pm) within 3 μs. The single-measurement spectrum spans >200 GHz (∼1.6 nm) far beyond the electronic bandwidth (33 GHz) of our acquisition system. Without using asynchronous combs or dispersers and detection arrays, the spectrometer may benefit many gas sensing applications, such as environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Femtosecond mode-locked lasers producing visible/infrared frequency combs have steadily advanced our understanding of fundamental processes in nature. For example, optical clocks employ frequency-comb techniques for the most precise measurements of time, permitting the search for minuscule drifts of natural constants. Furthermore, the generation of extreme-ultraviolet attosecond bursts synchronized to the electric field of visible/infrared femtosecond pulses affords real-time measurements of electron dynamics in matter. Cavity-enhanced high-order harmonic generation sources uniquely combine broadband vacuum- and extreme-ultraviolet spectral coverage with multimegahertz pulse repetition rates and coherence properties akin to those of frequency combs. Here we review the coming of age of this technology and its recent applications and prospects, including precision frequency-comb spectroscopy of electronic and potentially nuclear transitions, and low-space-charge attosecond-temporal-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy with nearly 100% temporal detection duty cycle.

Abstract:High finesse frequency combs (HFC) with large ratio of the frequency spacing to the width of the spectral components have demonstrated remarkable results in many applications such as precision spectroscopy and metrology. We found that low finesse frequency combs having very small ratio of the frequency spacing to the width of the spectral components are more sensitive to the exact resonance with absorber than HFC. Our method is based on time domain measurements reviling oscillations of the radiation intensity after passing through an optically thick absorber. Fourier analysis of the oscillations allows to reconstruct the spectral content of the comb. If the central component of the incident comb is in exact resonance with the single line absorber, the contribution of the first sideband frequency into oscillations is exactly zero. We demonstrate this technique with gamma-photon absorbtion by Mössbauer nuclei providing the spectral resolution beyond the natural broadening.

Abstract:Ultrabroadband electro-optic sampling with few-cycle optical pulses is known to be an extremely sensitive technique to detect electric field amplitudes. By combining this method with dual-comb spectroscopy and with a new class of ultrafast lasers, we perform high-resolution (<10 MHz, 0.0003 wavenumbers) spectroscopic measurements across the whole frequency range of 1.5 to 45 THz (6.6-200 microns) with an instantaneous spectral coverage exceeding an octave (e.g., 9-22 microns). As a driving source, we use a pair of highly mutually-coherent low-noise frequency combs centered at 2.35 microns produced by mode-locked solid-state Cr: ZnS lasers. One of the two combs is frequency downconverted via intrapulse difference frequency generation to produce a molecular sensing comb, while the second comb is frequency doubled to produce a near-IR comb for electro-optic sampling (EOS). An ultra-low intensity and phase noise of our dual-comb system allows capturing a vast amount of longwave spectral information (>200,000 comb-mode spectral lines) at up to a video rate of 69 Hz and with the high dynamic range limited by the shot noise of the near-IR EOS balanced detection. Our long-wavelength IR measurements with low-pressure gases: ethanol, isoprene, and dimethyl sulfide reveal spectroscopic features that had never been explored before.
