Abstract:The relationship between the nucleon density at large radii and the value of the rms radius is investigated in the framework of Skyrme Hartree-Fock and relativistic mean-field models. From a comparison to the charge density we constrain the models in terms of the nuclear matter incompressibility and effective mass properties required to reproduce the density shape. The results are used to extract the rms neutron radius for Pb-208 from antiprotonic atom data. The result for the difference between the neutron and proton rms radii, the so-called neutron-skin thickness, is S=0.20(+/- 0.04)(+/- 0.05) fm, where +/- 0.04 fm is experimental error from the antiprotonic line width, and +/- 0.05 fm is the theoretical error suggested from the comparison of the models with the experimental charge density.

Abstract:The neutron density distributions and neutron skin thicknesses in $^{40,48}$Ca are determined from the angular distributions of the cross sections and analyzing powers of polarized proton elastic scattering at $E_p = 295$ MeV. Based on the framework of the relativistic impulse approximation with the density-dependent effective $NN$ interaction, the experimental data is successfully analyzed, providing precise information of neutron and proton density profiles of $^{40,48}$Ca with small uncertainties. The extracted neutron and proton density distributions give neutron skin thicknesses in $^{40,48}$Ca for $-0.010^{+0.022}_{-0.024}$ fm and $0.168^{+0.025}_{-0.028}$ fm, respectively. The results of the density profiles and the neutron skin thickness in $^{48}$Ca are directly compared with the {\it ab initio} coupled-cluster calculations with interactions derived from chiral effective field theory, as well as relativistic and non-relativistic energy density functional theories.

Abstract:Emergent bulk properties of matter governed by the strong nuclear force give rise to physical phenomena across vastly different scales, ranging from the shape of atomic nuclei to the masses and radii of neutron stars. They can be accessed on Earth by measuring the spatial extent of the outer skin made of neutrons that characterises the surface of heavy nuclei. The isotope $^{208}$Pb, owing to its simple structure and neutron excess, has been in this context the target of many dedicated efforts. Here, we determine the neutron skin from measurements of particle distributions and their collective flow in $^{208}$Pb+$^{208}$Pb collisions at ultrarelativistic energy performed at the Large Hadron Collider, which are sensitive to the overall size of the colliding $^{208}$Pb ions. By means of state-of-the-art global analysis tools within the hydrodynamic model of heavy-ion collisions, we infer a neutron skin $\Delta r_{np}=0.217\pm0.058$ fm, consistent with nuclear theory predictions, and competitive in accuracy with a recent determination from parity-violating asymmetries in polarised electron scattering. We establish thus a new experimental method to systematically measure neutron distributions in the ground state of atomic nuclei.

Abstract:A benchmark experiment on 208Pb shows that polarized proton inelastic scattering at very forward angles including 0{\deg} is a powerful tool for high-resolution studies of electric dipole (E1) and spin magnetic dipole (M1) modes in nuclei over a broad excitation energy range to test up-to-date nuclear models. The extracted E1 polarizability leads to a neutron skin thickness r_skin = 0.156+0.025-0.021 fm in 208Pb derived within a mean-field model [Phys. Rev. C 81, 051303 (2010)], thereby constraining the symmetry energy and its density dependence, relevant to the description of neutron stars.

Abstract:The photon from neutron-proton bremsstrahlung in p+Pb reactions is examined as a potential probe of the neutron-skin thickness in different centralities and at different proton incident energies. It is shown that the best choice of reaction environment is about 140 MeV for the incident proton and the 95%–100% centrality for the reaction system since the incident proton mainly interacts with neutrons inside the skin of the target and thus leads to different photon production to a maximal extent. Moreover, considering two main uncertainties from both photon production probability and nucleon-nucleon cross section in the reaction, I propose to use the ratio of photon production from two reactions to measure the neutron-skin thickness because of its cancellation effects on these uncertainties simultaneously, but preserved about 13%–15% sensitivities on the varied neutron-skin thickness from 0.1 to 0.3 fm within the current experimental uncertainty range of the neutron-skin size in Pb208.

Abstract:We study whether the neutron skin thickness (NST) of 208Pb originates from the bulk or from the surface of the nucleon density distributions, according to the mean-field models of nuclear structure, and find that it depends on the stiffness of the nuclear symmetry energy. The bulk contribution to NST arises from an extended sharp radius of neutrons, whereas the surface contribution arises from different widths of the neutron and proton surfaces. Nuclear models where the symmetry energy is stiff, as typical relativistic models, predict a bulk contribution in NST of 208Pb about twice as large as the surface contribution. In contrast, models with a soft symmetry energy like common nonrelativistic models predict that NST of 208Pb is divided similarly into bulk and surface parts. Indeed, if the symmetry energy is supersoft, the surface contribution becomes dominant. We note that the linear correlation of NST of 208Pb with the density derivative of the nuclear symmetry energy arises from the bulk part of NST. We also note that most models predict a mixed-type (between halo and skin) neutron distribution for 208Pb. Although the halo-type limit is actually found in the models with a supersoft symmetry energy, the skin-type limit is not supported by any mean-field model. Finally, we compute parity-violating electron scattering in the conditions of the 208Pb parity radius experiment (PREX) and obtain a pocket formula for the parity-violating asymmetry in terms of the parameters that characterize the shape of the 208Pb nucleon densities.

Abstract:We discuss the neutron skins of 48Ca and 208Pb. We review and critically examine modern predictions and empirical constraints, with special attention to the different interpretations of the findings from the PREX-II experiment and the recently reported value of the neutron skin in 48Ca extracted from the CREX experiment. We argue that, in the spirit of the ab initio philosophy, the path to understanding the behavior of dense neutron-rich matter must not circumvent fundamental nuclear forces. Based only on that argument, a thick neutron skin in 208Pb is highly unlikely.

Abstract:Within the framework of the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model, we simulate the semiperipheral collisions of neutron-rich Ca, Mg, and Ne isotopes on C12 target at 50 MeV/nucleon. Different neutron-skin thicknesses (Sn) of projectiles are obtained by adjusting the neutron diffuseness parameter in the droplet model. It is suggested that in both initial and final states, the difference of momentum between neutrons and protons [ΔP(n−p)] decreases linearly with the increase of Sn . The similar correlation exists between Sn and the peak position of the momentum spectrum of neutrons (g1) . Moreover, the yield ratio of neutrons to protons [R(n/p)] is proportional to Sn and R(n/p) with lower momentum is more sensitive to Sn . The above analyses are also applied to the triton and He3 , which displays some limitations of their dependence on Sn . Interplay of effects of neutron skins in coordinate space and proton skins in momentum space on hard photons emission in heavy-ion collisions around Fermi Energy

Abstract:Within an isospin- and momentum-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model, we investigate the hard photons emission from neutron-proton bremsstrahlung in reaction system of $^{208}Pb+^{208}Pb$ around Fermi energy. Effects of neutron skins in coordinate ($r$) space and proton skins in momentum ($k$) space on the time evolution, the angular distribution, and the transverse momentum spectra of hard photons with different energies are studied. It is shown that the emission of direct hard photons is sensitive to the neutron skin, which has larger effects for more energetic hard photons. Meanwhile, we find that the proton skins have an important influence on the emission of direct hard photons, and its effect is actually even larger than that of neutron skins. It needs to take the effect of proton skins into account when we determine the size of neutron skins by comparing transport mode predictions of hard photons with the corresponding experiment measurements.

Abstract:The neutron skin thickness of the benchmark nucleus Pb208 is crucial for our understanding of the equation of state of nuclear matter. In this paper, we discuss the effect of the neutron skin on the flow ratio observables in the semi-isobaric collisions Pb208+Pb208 and Au197+Au197 using iebe-vishnu hydrodynamic simulations. Our results suggest that Pb208 and Au197 should have the same magnitude of neutron skin thickness to describe the anisotropic flow ratios between the semi-isobaric systems. Abstract:By adding isospin dependent high order correction terms to existing relativistic mean field models, the thickness of neutron-skin in ~(208)Pb and the radius of 1.4 solar mass neutron star are studied. The effective interaction PK1 would lead the thickness of neutron-skin to a minimum of 0.17 fm which agrees with the analysis from Skyrme-HF models. The coupling constants of the isospin dependent high order correction terms tend to change, the thickness of neutron-skin and the radius of neutron stars change simultaneously.

Abstract:{\bf Background:} Using the chiral (Kyushu) $g$-matrix folding model with the densities calculated with GHFB+AMP, we determined $r_{\rm skin}^{208}=0.25$fm from the central values of $\sigma_{\rm R}$ of p+$^{208}$Pb scattering in $E_{\rm in}=40-81$MeV. The high-resolution $E1$ polarizability experiment ($E1$pE) yields $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(E1{\rm pE}) =0.14-0.20$fm. The data on $\sigma_{\rm R}$ are available as a function of $E_{\rm in}$ for $p$+$^{48}$Ca scattering. {\bf Aim:} Our aim is to determine $r_{\rm skin}^{48}$ from the central values of $\sigma_{\rm R}$ for $p$+$^{48}$Ca scattering by using the folding model. {\bf Results:} As for $^{48}$Ca, we determine $r_n(E1{\rm pE})=3.56$fm from the central value 0.17fm of $r_{\rm skin}^{48}(E1{\rm pE})$ and $r_p({\rm EXP})=3.385$fm of electron scattering, and evaluate $r_m(E1{\rm pE})=3.485$fm from the $r_n(E1{\rm pE})$ and the $r_p({\rm EXP})$ of electron scattering. The folding model with GHFB+AMP densities reproduces $\sigma_{\rm R}$ in $23 \leq E_{\rm in} \leq 25.3$ MeV in one-$\sigma$ level, but slightly overestimates the central values of $\sigma_{\rm R}$ there. In $23 \leq E_{\rm in} \leq 25.3$MeV, the small deviation allows us to scale the GHFB+AMP densities to the central values of $r_p({\rm EXP})$ and $r_n(E1{\rm pE})$. The $\sigma_{\rm R}(E1{\rm pE})$ obtained with the scaled densities almost reproduce the central values of $\sigma_{\rm R}$ when $E_{\rm in}=23-25.3$MeV, so that the $\sigma_{\rm R}({\rm GHFB+AMP})$ and the $\sigma_{\rm R}(E1{\rm pE})$ are in 1-$\sigma$ of $\sigma_{\rm R}$ there. In $E_{\rm in}=23-25.3$MeV, we determine the $r_{m}({\rm EXP})$ from the central values of $\sigma_{\rm R}$ and take the average for the $r_{m}({\rm EXP})$. The averaged value is $r_{m}({\rm EXP})=3.471$fm. Eventually, we obtain $r_{\rm skin}^{48}({\rm EXP})=0.146$fm from $r_{m}({\rm EXP})=3.471$fm and $r_p({\rm EXP})=3.385$fm.

Abstract:Foster {\it et al.} measured total neutron cross sections $\sigma_{\rm T}$ of n+$^{208}$Pb scattering at $14.137$MeV. Carlson {\it et al.} measured $\sigma_{\rm R}$ for $p$+$^{48}$Ca scattering in $23 \text{--} 48$MeV. Tanaka {\it et al.} measured $\sigma_{\rm I}$ for $^{42\text{--}51}$Ca + $^{12}$C scattering at 280MeV/u. Bagchi {\it et al.} measured the charge-changing (CC) cross sections and determined proton radii $r_{\rm p}({\rm CC})$ for $^{14,15,17 \text{--} 22}$N from the CC cross sections. Kanungo {\it et al.} measured the CC cross sections and extracted $r_{\rm p}({\rm CC})$ for $^{12\text{--} 19}$C. Kaur {\it et al.} measured the CC cross sections and determined $r_{\rm p}({\rm CC})$ for $^{16,18 \text{--} 24}$O. Our 1st aim is to extract $r_{\rm skin}^{208}$ from the the $\sigma_{\rm T}$ of n+$^{208}$Pb scattering at $14.137$MeV. Our 2nd aim is to determine $r_{\rm skin}^{48}({\rm skin})$ from $\sigma_{\rm R}$ on p+$^{48}$Ca scattering in $E_{\rm lab}=23 \text{--} 48$MeV. Our 3rd aim is to find light stable nuclei having nuclei having large $r_{\rm skin}$. We use the Kyushu $g$-matrix folding model for lower $E_{\rm lab}$ and the folding model based on the Love-Franey $t$-matrix for higher $E_{\rm lab}$. We determine $r_{\rm skin}^{48}({\rm skin})=0.163 \pm 0.037{\rm fm}$ from the $\sigma_{\rm R}$ on p+$^{48}$Ca scattering, using the Kyushu $g$-matrix folding model with the D1M-GHFB+AMP proton and neutron densities. We show that D1M-GHFB+AMP is better than D1S-GHFB+AMP for the matter radius and the binding energy. Our skin value is consistent with $r_{\rm skin}^{48}({\rm CREX})$. For C, N, O isotopes, we find that $r_{\rm skin}= 0.267 \pm 0.056$~fm for $^{14}$N and $r_{\rm skin}= 0.197 \pm 0.067$~fm for $^{17}$O. Our value $r_{\rm skin}^{208}=0.309 \pm 0.057$fm agrees with $r_{\rm skin}^{208}({\rm PREX2})$.

Abstract:Particle production in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions depends on the details of the nucleon density distributions in the colliding nuclei. We demonstrate that the charged hadron multiplicity distributions in isobaric collisions at ultrarelativistic energies provide a novel approach to determine the poorly known neutron density distributions and thus the neutron skin thickness in finite nuclei, which can in turn put stringent constraints on the nuclear symmetry energy.

Abstract:The recently completed PREX-2 campaign - which measured the weak form factor of lead at an optimal momentum transfer - has confirmed that the neutron skin of lead is relatively large and has provided a precise determination of the interior baryon density of a heavy nucleus. In turn, the measured form factor can be related to various nuclear and neutron-star properties. Astrophysical observations by the NICER mission have benefited from improvements in flux, energy resolution, and notably, timing resolution. NICER has the capability to measure pulse profile data, which enables simultaneous mass-radius determinations. During the next decade, measurements in astrophysics, gravitational wave astronomy, and nuclear physics are expected to provide a wealth of more precise data. In this review we provide an overview of the current state of neutron skin measurements and offer insights into the prospects for the future.

Abstract:A precise determination of the neutron skin thickness of a heavy nucleus sets a basic constraint on the nuclear symmetry energy (the neutron skin thickness is the difference of the neutron and proton rms radii of the nucleus). The parity radius experiment (PREX) may achieve it by electroweak parity-violating electron scattering (PVES) on 208Pb. We investigate PVES in nuclear mean field approach to allow the accurate extraction of the neutron skin thickness of 208Pb from the parity-violating asymmetry probed in the experiment. We demonstrate a high linear correlation between the parity-violating asymmetry and the neutron skin thickness in successful mean field forces as the best means to constrain the neutron skin of 208Pb from PREX, without assumptions on the neutron density shape. Continuation of the experiment with higher precision in the parity-violating asymmetry is motivated since the present method can support it to constrain the density slope of the nuclear symmetry energy to new accuracy.

Abstract:The static dipole polarizability, $\alpha_{\rm D}$, in ${}^{208}$Pb has been recently measured with high-resolution via proton inelastic scattering at the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP). This observable is thought to be intimately connected with the neutron skin thickness, $r_{\rm skin}$, of the same nucleus and, more fundamentally, it is believed to be associated with the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. The impact of $r_{\rm skin}$ on $\alpha_{\rm D}$ in ${}^{208}$Pb is investigated and discussed on the basis of a large and representative set of relativistic and non-relativistic nuclear energy density functionals (EDF).

Abstract:We report a precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry $A_{PV}$ in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from $^{208}$Pb. We measure $A_{PV}=550\pm 16 {\rm (stat)}\pm 8\ {\rm (syst)}$ parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor $F_W(Q^2 = 0.00616\ {\rm GeV}^2) = 0.368 \pm 0.013$. Combined with our previous measurement, the extracted neutron skin thickness is $R_n-R_p=0.283 \pm 0.071$~fm. The result also yields the first significant direct measurement of the interior weak density of $^{208}$Pb: $\rho^0_W = -0.0796\pm0.0036\ {\rm (exp.)}\pm0.0013\ {\rm (theo.)}\ {\rm fm}^{-3}$ leading to the interior baryon density $\rho^0_b = 0.1480\pm0.0036\ {\rm (exp.)}\pm0.0013\ {\rm (theo.)}\ {\rm fm}^{-3}$. The measurement accurately constrains the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter near saturation density, with implications for the size and composition of neutron stars.

Abstract:The neutron-skin thickness of heavy nuclei provides a fundamental link to the equation of state of neutron-rich matter, and hence to the properties of neutron stars. The Lead Radius Experiment ("PREX") at Jefferson Laboratory has recently provided the first model-independence evidence on the existence of a neutron-rich skin in 208Pb. In this contribution we examine how the increased accuracy in the determination of neutron skins expected from the commissioning of intense polarized electron beams may impact the physics of neutron stars.
