Abstract:The objective of our study is to ascertain the present learning behaviors, driving forces, and assessment techniques as perceived by first-year students, and to examine them through the lens of the most recent developments (pandemic, shift to remote instruction, return to in-person instruction). Educators and educational institutions can create a more accommodating learning environment that takes into account the varied needs and preferences of students by recognizing and implementing these findings, which will ultimately improve the quality of education as a whole. Students believe that in-person instruction is the most effective way to learn, with exercise-based learning, group instruction, and pair programming. Our research indicates that, for evaluation methods, there is a preference for practical and written examinations. Our findings also underscore the importance of incorporating real-world scenarios, encouraging interactive learning approaches, and creating engaging educational environments.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### What problems does this paper attempt to solve? This paper aims to explore the learning behaviors, motivations, and assessment methods of first - year computer science students in the current learning environment. Specifically, the research objectives are: 1. **Understand students' learning behaviors and motivations**: - Researchers hope to find out through surveys which factors these students think can best stimulate their learning motivation. For example, whether students are more inclined to study for economic benefits (such as future career development) or personal interests (such as interest in course content). 2. **Analyze the effectiveness of assessment methods**: - Researchers hope to understand students' views on different assessment methods, including which assessment method they think is the fairest and most effective, and why. For example, whether students prefer written examinations, practical projects, or other forms of assessment. 3. **Examine the effectiveness of learning methods**: - Researchers also hope to understand which learning methods students think are the most effective, such as face - to - face teaching, online courses, group learning, or pair programming. 4. **Cope with the changes brought by the epidemic**: - The research specifically focuses on the impact of the changes from traditional classroom teaching to online teaching during the epidemic and then back to face - to - face teaching on students' learning behaviors and preferences. Researchers hope to use these data to help educators better understand students' needs, so as to create a more adaptive and supportive learning environment. ### Research background In recent years, unexpected global events (such as the COVID - 19 pandemic) and the resulting changes in teaching models (such as the transition from offline to online and then back to offline) have brought major challenges to the quality of education. As a result, students may have difficulty keeping up with their studies, their academic performance may be affected, and they may even lose their motivation to learn. Therefore, researchers hope to fill the knowledge gap regarding students' learning preferences and habits through this research, so as to provide valuable references for educators and help them develop better teaching strategies and support measures. ### Main research questions To achieve the above goals, researchers have proposed the following specific research questions: - What are the main learning motivations of students? - Which assessment method do students think is the fairest, and why? - Which learning methods do students think are the most effective? Through the answers to these questions, researchers hope to reveal the real thoughts and needs of students in the current complex learning environment, so as to provide a basis for improving the quality of teaching.
