Abstract:Of the tens of thousands of particle accelerators in operation worldwide, the vast majority are not used for particle physics, but instead for applications. Some applications such as radiotherapy for cancer treatment are well-known, while others are more surprising: food irradiation using electron beams, or the hardening of road tarmac. The uses of particle beams are constantly growing in number including in medicine, industry, security, environment, and cultural heritage preservation. This lecture aims to give a broad sweep of the many uses of particle accelerators, covering technologies ranging in size from a few centimetres for industrial electron linacs through to large synchrotron light sources of hundreds of metres circumference operating as national and international facilities. We finish by discussing some of the challenges facing accelerators used in wider society.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the extensive applications and significance of particle accelerators in various fields. Particle accelerators are typically considered key tools for particle physics research, but in reality, a large portion of the tens of thousands of particle accelerators worldwide are used in other fields such as medicine, industry, security, environmental protection, and cultural heritage preservation. Specifically: 1. **Medical Applications**: - **Radiotherapy**: Uses X-rays or electron beams to irradiate tumors, causing DNA damage in cancer cells, leading to cell death. Modern technologies such as Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) further enhance treatment effectiveness. - **Particle Therapy**: Uses protons or heavy ions to precisely target tumors, reducing damage to healthy tissues, especially notable in the application of the Bragg peak effect. - **Radioisotope Production**: Generates short-lived and long-lived isotopes through accelerators, used in Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), and brachytherapy. 2. **Industrial Applications**: - **Semiconductor Doping**: Uses ion implantation technology to precisely control the distribution of dopants in semiconductor materials, improving device performance. - **Electron Beam Irradiation**: Widely used in ink curing, adhesives, sterilization of medical devices, food disinfection, and preservation, with environmental advantages. - **Non-Destructive Testing**: Uses X-rays for CT inspection of high-density objects, suitable for identifying internal defects in aerospace components, turbine blades, and other complex structures. 3. **Other Applications**: - **Ion Beam Analysis (IBA)**: Analyzes the elemental composition of material surfaces using light ions (such as protons or helium), applicable in nanotechnology, semiconductor manufacturing, environmental pollution monitoring, and more. - **Radiocarbon Dating**: Measures long-lived radioactive nuclides using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), used in archaeology and geology research. In summary, this paper aims to demonstrate the important role of particle accelerators in various fields and emphasize their indispensable impact on social development.
