Abstract:We consider maps $T$ solving the optimal transport problem with a cost $c(x-y)$ modeled on the $p$-cost. For Hölder continuous marginals, we prove a $C^{1,\alpha}$-partial regularity result for $T $in the set $\{|T(x)-x|>0\}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the regularity of optimal mappings in Monge's mass transfer problem. Using the approximation to Monge's cost function c(x, y) = vertical bar x - y vertical bar through the costs c(x, y) = root epsilon(2) + vertical bar x - y vertical bar(2), we consider the optimal mappings T-epsilon for these costs, and we prove that the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix DT epsilon, which are all positive, are locally uniformly bounded. By an example we prove that T-epsilon is in general not uniformly Lipschitz continuous as epsilon -> 0, even if the mass distributions are positive and smooth, and the domains are c-convex. Abstract:We prove that, in the optimal transportation problem with general costs and positive continuous densities, the potential function is always of class $W^{2,p}_{loc}$ for any $p \geq 1$ outside of a closed singular set of measure zero. We also establish global $W^{2,p}$ estimates when the cost is a small perturbation of the quadratic cost. The latter result is new even when the cost is exactly the quadratic cost.

Abstract:We prove that if $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ is a (not necessarily strictly) convex, $C^1$ domain, and $\mu$ and $\bar{\mu}$ are probability measures absolutely continuous with respect to surface measure on $\partial \Omega$, with densities bounded away from zero and infinity, whose $2$-Monge-Kantorovich distance is sufficiently small, then there exists a continuous Monge solution to the optimal transport problem with cost function given by the quadratic distance on the ambient space $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. This result is also shown to be sharp, via a counterexample when $\Omega$ is uniformly convex but not $C^1$. Additionally, if $\Omega$ is $C^{1, \alpha}$ regular for some $\alpha$, then the Monge solution is shown to be Hölder continuous.

Quantitative stability in optimal transport for general power costs

Abstract:We establish novel quantitative stability results for optimal transport problems with respect to perturbations in the target measure. We provide explicit bounds on the stability of optimal transport potentials and maps, which are relevant for both theoretical and practical applications. Our results apply to a wide range of costs, including all Wasserstein distances with power cost exponent strictly larger than $1$ and leverage mostly assumptions on the source measure, such as log-concavity and bounded support. Our work provides a significant step forward in the understanding of stability of optimal transport problems, as previous results where mostly limited to the case of the quadratic cost.

Abstract:We study the convergence of the transport plans $\gamma_\epsilon$ towards $\gamma_0$ as well as the cost of the entropy-regularized optimal transport $(c,\gamma_\epsilon)$ towards $(c,\gamma_0)$ as the regularization parameter $\epsilon$ vanishes in the setting of finite entropy marginals. We show that under the assumption of infinitesimally twisted cost and compactly supported marginals the distance $W_2(\gamma_\epsilon,\gamma_0)$ is asymptotically greater than $C\sqrt{\epsilon}$ and the suboptimality $(c,\gamma_\epsilon)-(c,\gamma_0)$ is of order $\epsilon$. In the quadratic cost case the compactness assumption is relaxed into a moment of order $2+\delta$ assumption. Moreover, in the case of a Lipschitz transport map for the non-regularized problem, the distance $W_2(\gamma_\epsilon,\gamma_0)$ converges to $0$ at rate $\sqrt{\epsilon}$. Finally, if in addition the marginals have finite Fisher information, we prove $(c,\gamma_\epsilon)-(c,\gamma_0) \sim d\epsilon/2$ and we provide a companion expansion of $H(\gamma_\epsilon)$. These results are achieved by disentangling the role of the cost and the entropy in the regularized problem.

Abstract:We establish quantitative stability bounds for the quadratic optimal transport map $T_\mu$ between a fixed probability density $\rho$ and a probability measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Under general assumptions on $\rho$, we prove that the map $\mu\mapsto T_\mu$ is bi-Hölder continuous, with dimension-free Hölder exponents. The linearized optimal transport metric $W_{2,\rho}(\mu,\nu)=\|T_\mu-T_\nu\|_{L^2(\rho)}$ is therefore bi-Hölder equivalent to the $2$-Wasserstein distance, which justifies its use in applications. We show this property in the following cases: (i) for any log-concave density $\rho$ with full support in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and any log-bounded perturbation thereof; (ii) for $\rho$ bounded away from $0$ and $+\infty$ on a John domain (e.g., on a bounded Lipschitz domain), while the only previously known result of this type assumed convexity of the domain; (iii) for some important families of probability densities on bounded domains which decay or blow-up polynomially near the boundary. Concerning the sharpness of point (ii), we also provide examples of non-John domains for which the Brenier potentials do not satisfy any Hölder stability estimate. Our proofs rely on local variance inequalities for the Brenier potentials in small convex subsets of the support of $\rho$, which are glued together to deduce a global variance inequality. This gluing argument is based on two different strategies of independent interest: one of them leverages the properties of the Whitney decomposition in bounded domains, the other one relies on spectral graph theory.

Abstract:The optimal transportation theory was successfully applied to different tasks on geometric domains as images and triangle meshes. In these applications the transport problem is defined on a Riemannian manifold with geodesic distance $d(x,y)$. Usually, the cost function used is the geodesic distance $d$ or the squared geodesic distance $d^2$. These choices result in the 1-Wasserstein distance, also known as the earth mover's distance (EMD), or the 2-Wasserstein distance. The entropy regularized optimal transport problem can be solved using the Bregman projection algorithm. This algorithm can be implemented using only matrix multiplications of matrix $\exp(-C/varepsilon)$ (pointwise exponent) and pointwise vector multiplications, where $C$ is a cost matrix, and $\varepsilon$ is the regularization parameter. In this paper, we obtain a low-rank decomposition of this matrix and exploit it to accelerate the Bregman projection algorithm. Our low-rank decomposition is based on the semidiscrete approximation of the cost function, which is valid for a large family of cost functions, including $d^p (x, y)$, where $p \geq 1$. Our method requires the calculation of only a small portion of the distances.

Abstract:This note concerns the relationship between conditions on cost functions and domains and the convexity properties of potentials in optimal transportation and the continuity of the associated optimal mappings. In particular, we prove that if the cost function satisfies the condition (A3), introduced in our previous work with Xinan Ma, the densities and their reciprocals are bounded and the target domain is convex with respect to the cost function, then the potential is continuously differentiable and its dual potential strictly concave with respect to the cost function. Our result extends, by different and more direct proof, similar results of Loeper proved by approximation from our earlier work on global regularity.

Optimal transport map estimation in general function spaces

Abstract:We study the problem of estimating a function $T$ given independent samples from a distribution $P$ and from the pushforward distribution $T_\sharp P$. This setting is motivated by applications in the sciences, where $T$ represents the evolution of a physical system over time, and in machine learning, where, for example, $T$ may represent a transformation learned by a deep neural network trained for a generative modeling task. To ensure identifiability, we assume that $T = \nabla \varphi_0$ is the gradient of a convex function, in which case $T$ is known as an \emph{optimal transport map}. Prior work has studied the estimation of $T$ under the assumption that it lies in a Hölder class, but general theory is lacking. We present a unified methodology for obtaining rates of estimation of optimal transport maps in general function spaces. Our assumptions are significantly weaker than those appearing in the literature: we require only that the source measure $P$ satisfy a Poincaré inequality and that the optimal map be the gradient of a smooth convex function that lies in a space whose metric entropy can be controlled. As a special case, we recover known estimation rates for Hölder transport maps, but also obtain nearly sharp results in many settings not covered by prior work. For example, we provide the first statistical rates of estimation when $P$ is the normal distribution and the transport map is given by an infinite-width shallow neural network.

Abstract:In this paper we prove the strict c-convexity and the C1,α regularity for potential functions in optimal transportation under condition (A3w). These results were obtained by Caffarelli [1], [3], [4] for the cost c(x,y)=|x−y|2, by Liu [11], Loeper [15], Trudinger and Wang [20] for costs satisfying the condition (A3). For costs satisfying the condition (A3w), the results have also been proved by Figalli, Kim, and McCann [6], assuming that the initial and target domains are uniformly c-convex, see also [21]; and by Guillen and Kitagawa [8], assuming the cost function satisfies A3w in larger domains. In this paper we prove the strict c-convexity and the C1,α regularity assuming either the support of source density is compactly contained in a larger domain where the cost function satisfies A3w, or the dimension 2≤n≤4.

Abstract:This paper slightly improves a classical result by Gangbo and McCann (1996) about the structure of optimal transport plans for costs that are concave functions of the Euclidean distance. Since the main difficulty for proving the existence of an optimal map comes from the possible singularity of the cost at $0$, everything is quite easy if the supports of the two measures are disjoint; Gangbo and McCann proved the result under the assumption $\mu(\spt(\nu))=0$; in this paper we replace this assumption with the fact that the two measures are singular to each other. In this case it is possible to prove the existence of an optimal transport map, provided the starting measure $\mu$ does not give mass to small sets (i.e. $(d\!-\!1)-$rectifiable sets). When the measures are not singular the optimal transport plan decomposes into two parts, one concentrated on the diagonal and the other being a transport map between mutually singular measures.
