Abstract:A famous theorem of Galvin states that the list chromatic number of the intersection of two partition matroids equals its chromatic number. Kiraly and Berczi et. al. conjectured that this equality holds for any two matroids. We prove this conjecture and a conjecture by Aharoni--Berger for any two generalized partition matroids.

Abstract:A result \cite{matcomp} from 2006 of Aharoni and the first author of this paper states that for any two natural numbers p, q, where p divides q, if a matroid M is p-colorable and a matroid N is q-colorable then M \cap N is (p+q)-colorable. In this paper we show that the assumption that p divides q is in fact redundant, and we also prove that M \cap N is even p+q list-colorable. The result uses topology and relies on a new parameter yielding a lower bound for the topological connectivity of the intersection of two matroids.

Abstract:We study simplicial complexes (hypergraphs closed under taking subsets) that are the intersection of a given number k of matroids. We prove bounds on their chromatic numbers (the minimum number of edges required to cover the ground set) and their list chromatic numbers. Settling a conjecture of Kiraly and Berczi et. al., we prove that the list chromatic number is at most k times the chromatic number. Following the footsteps of Edmonds, who considered the case k=2, we study three polytopes associated with k-tuples of matroids, and prove bounds on the distances between them. The tools used are in part topological.

Chern Numbers of Matroids

Abstract:We define Chern numbers of a matroid. These numbers are obtained when intersecting appropriate matroid Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycles defined by López de Medrano, Rincón, and Shaw. We prove that when a matroid arises from a complex hyperplane arrangement the Chern numbers of the matroid correspond to the Chern numbers of the log cotangent bundle. A matroid of rank 3 has two Chern numbers. We prove that they are positive and that their ratio is bounded by 3, which is analogous to the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality. If the matroid is orientable, we generalize a result of Eterović, Figuera, and Urzúa to prove that the ratio is bounded above by 5/2. Finally, we give a formula for the Chern numbers of the uniform matroid of any rank.

Chromatic congruences and Bernoulli numbers

Abstract:For every natural number $n$ and a fixed prime $p$, we prove a new congruence for the orbifold Euler characteristic of a group. The $p$-adic limit of these congruences as $n$ tends to infinity recovers the Brown-Quillen congruence. We apply these results to mapping class groups and using the Harer-Zagier formula we obtain a family of congruences for Bernoulli numbers. We show that these congruences in particular recover classical congruences for Bernoulli numbers due to Kummer, Voronoi, Carlitz, and Cohen.

Abstract:We prove analogs of Brooks' Theorem for the list-distinguishing chromatic number of finite connected graphs. Moreover, we give new examples to determine two sharp upper bounds for the list-distinguishing chromatic number of a graph G in terms of the coloring number of G and the list-chromatic number of G. We also determine the list-distinguishing chromatic number for various families of graphs (example: the book graphs).

Abstract:The intersection numbers of moduli spaces of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,m}$ are well-studied and are known to have rich combinatorial structure. We introduce a natural class of these intersection numbers $\omega_{G,g,m}$ indexed by finite simple graphs $G=(V,E)$. In genus zero, these numbers are closely related to several previously-studied quantities, including maximum likelihood degrees in algebraic statistics, counts of regions of certain hyperplane arrangements, and Kapranov degrees. We give two proofs of a simple closed formula $\omega_{G,g,m}=(-1)^{\left\lvert V \right\rvert}\chi_G(-(2g-2+m)),$ where $\chi_G$ is the chromatic polynomial of $G$ -- one proof via intersection theory on moduli spaces of stable curves, and the other using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We discuss several related questions and speculations, including new candidates for the chromatic polynomial of a directed graph.

A generalization of Zhu's theorem on six-valent integer distance graphs

Abstract:Given a set $S$ of positive integers, the integer distance graph for $S$ has the set of integers as its vertex set, where two vertices are adjacent if and only if the absolute value of their difference lies in $S$. In 2002, Zhu completely determined the chromatic number of integer distance graphs when $S$ has cardinality $3$. Integer distance graphs can be defined equivalently as Cayley graphs on the group of integers under addition. In a previous paper, the authors develop general methods to approach the problem of finding chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs on abelian groups. To each such graph one associates an integer matrix. In some cases the chromatic number can be determined directly from the matrix entries. In particular, the authors completely determine the chromatic number whenever the matrix is of size $3\times 2$ -- precisely the size of the matrices associated to the graphs studied by Zhu. In this paper, then, we demonstrate that Zhu's theorem can be recovered as a special case of the authors' previous results.

Abstract:Matroid is a generalization of many fundamental objects in combinatorial mathematics , and matroid intersection problem is a classical subject in combinatorial optimization . However , only the intersection of two matroids are well understood . The solution of the intersection problem of more than three matroids is proved to be \textbf{NP-hard} . We will give a lower bound estimate on the maximal cardinality of the common independent sets in matroid intersections . We will also study some properties of the intersection of more than two matroids and deduce some analogous results for Edmonds' Min-max theorems for matroids intersection .
Chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs of abelian groups: A matrix method

Abstract:In this paper, we take a modest first step towards a systematic study of chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs on abelian groups. We lose little when we consider these graphs only when they are connected and of finite degree. As in the work of Heuberger and others, in such cases the graph can be represented by an $m\times r$ integer matrix, where we call $m$ the dimension and $r$ the rank. Adding or subtracting rows produces a graph homomorphism to a graph with a matrix of smaller dimension, thereby giving an upper bound on the chromatic number of the original graph. In this article we develop the foundations of this method. In a series of follow-up articles using this method, we completely determine the chromatic number in cases with small dimension and rank; prove a generalization of Zhu's theorem on the chromatic number of $6$-valent integer distance graphs; and provide an alternate proof of Payan's theorem that a cube-like graph cannot have chromatic number 3.

Abstract:Recently, Andrews proved two conjectures for a partition statistic introduced by Beck. Very recently, Chern established some results for weighted rank and crank moments and proved many Andrews–Beck type congruences. Motivated by Andrews and Chern's work, Lin, Peng, and Toh introduced a partition statistic of k -colored partitions which counts the total number of parts of in each k -colored partition of n with congruent to r modulo m and proved a number of congruences for . In this paper, we prove some identities on which are analogous to Ramanujan's "most beautiful identity." Moreover, those identities imply some congruences proved by Lin, Peng, and Toh.

Abstract:By the work of Ferroni and Larson, Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and Z-polynomials of complete graphs have combinatorial interpretations in terms of quasi series-parallel matroids. We provide explicit formulas for the number of series-parallel matroids and the number of simple series-parallel matroids of a given rank and cardinality, extending results of Ferroni-Larson and Gao-Proudfoot-Yang-Zhang.

Abstract:The chromatic polynomial χG(q)\chi _G(q) of a graph GG counts the number of proper colorings of GG. We give an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Read and Rota-Heron-Welsh that the absolute values of the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial form a log-concave sequence. The proof is obtained by identifying χG(q)\chi _G(q) with a sequence of numerical invariants of a projective hypersurface analogous to the Milnor number of a local analytic hypersurface. As a by-product of our approach, we obtain an analogue of Kouchnirenko’s theorem relating the Milnor number with the Newton polytope; we also characterize homology classes of Pn×Pm\mathbb {P}^n \times \mathbb {P}^m corresponding to subvarieties and answer a question posed by Trung-Verma.

Abstract:We provide explicit combinatorial formulas for the Chow polynomial and for the augmented Chow polynomial of uniform matroids, thereby proving a conjecture by Ferroni. These formulas refine existing formulas by Hampe and by Eur, Huh, and Larson, offering a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients based on Schubert matroids. As a byproduct, we count Schubert matroids by rank, number of loops, and cogirth.

Abstract:In 1917, Hardy and Ramanujan obtained the asymptotic formula for the classical partition function $p(n)$. The classical partition function $p(n)$ has been extensively studied. Recently, Luca and Ralaivaosaona obtained the asymptotic formula for the square-root function. Many mathematicians have paid much attention to congruences on some special colored partition functions. In this paper, we investigate the general colored partition functions. Given positive integers $1=s_1<s_2<\dots <s_k$ and $\ell_1, \ell_2,\dots , \ell_k$. Let $g(\mathbf{s}, \mathbf{l}, n)$ be the number of $\ell$-colored partitions of $n$ with $\ell_i$ of the colors appearing only in multiplies of $s_i\ (1\le i\le k)$, where $\ell = \ell_1+\cdots +\ell_k$. By using the elementary method we obtain an asymptotic formula for the partition function $g(\mathbf{s}, \mathbf{l}, n)$ with an explicit error term.

Abstract:In this short note, we prove equidistribution results regarding three families of three-colour partitions recently introduced by Schlosser and Zhou. To do so, we prove an asymptotic formula for the infinite product ( with and a root of unity) when lies in certain sectors in the right half-plane, which may be useful in studying similar problems. As a corollary, we obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the three-colour partition families at hand.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, and let $m>0$ with $\exp(G)\mid m$. Let $s_{m}(G)$ be the generalized Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv invariant which denotes the smallest positive integer $d$ such that any sequence of elements in $G$ of length $d$ contains a subsequence of length $m$ with sum zero in $G$. For any integer $r>0$, let $\mathcal{I}_m^{(r)}$ be the collection of all $r$-uniform intersecting families of size $m$. Let $R(\mathcal{I}_m^{(r)},G)$ be the smallest positive integer $d$ such that any $G$-coloring of the edges of the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph $K_{d}^{(r)}$ yields a zero-sum copy of some intersecting family in $\mathcal{I}_m^{(r)}$. Among other results, we mainly prove that $\Omega(s_{m}(G))-1\leq R (\mathcal{I}_{m}^{(r)}, \ G)\leq \Omega(s_{m}(G)),$ where $\Omega(s_{m}(G))$ denotes the least positive integer $n$ such that ${n-1 \choose r-1}\geq s_{m}(G)$, and we show that if $r\mid \Omega(s_{m}(G))-1$ then $R (\mathcal{I}_{m}^{(r)}, \ G)= \Omega(s_{m}(G))$.

The List Square Coloring Conjecture fails for bipartite planar graphs and their line graphs

Abstract:Kostochka and Woodall (2001) conjectured that the square of every graph has the same chromatic number and list chromatic number. In 2015 Kim and Park disproved this conjecture for non-bipartite and bipartite graphs. It was asked by several authors whether this conjecture holds for bipartite graphs with small degrees, claw-free graphs, or line graphs. In this paper, we introduce cubic counterexamples to this conjecture to solve three open problems posed by Kim and Park~(2015), Kim, Kwon, and Park~(2015), and Dai, Wang, Yang, and Yu~(2018). In particular, we disprove a planar version of this conjecture proposed by Havet, Heuvel, McDiarmid, and Reed (2017). Moreover, we formulated a revised version for this conjecture in bipartite graphs $G$ by imposing the condition $\chi(G^2) \ge \frac{1}{2} \Delta(G^2)+1$, where $G^2$ denotes the square of $G$ and the other two parameter denote its chromatic number and maximum degree. This new version still implies the List Total Coloring Conjecture. On the other hand, we introduce a family of counterexamples obtained from line graphs $L(G)$ of bipartite planar graphs $G$ with sufficiently large maximum degree satisfying $\chi(L(G)^2) \ge \frac{1}{2} \Delta(L(G)^2)$+n, where $n$ is a sufficiently large integer. Finally, we investigate non-chromatic-choosable graphs with bounded maximum degree in bipartite and planar graphs. Consequently, we improve a result due to Bessy, Havet, and Palaysi (2002) and strengthen a result due to Glebov, Kostochka, and Tashkinov~(2005). In addition, we characterize non-chromatic-choosable graphs of order at most $9$ and settle a question posed by Nelsen~(2019).

Matroidal Mixed Eulerian Numbers

Abstract:We make a systematic study of matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers which are certain intersection numbers in the matroid Chow ring generalizing the mixed Eulerian numbers introduced by Postnikov. These numbers are shown to be valuative and obey a log-concavity relation. We establish recursion formulas and use them to relate matroidal mixed Eulerian numbers to the characteristic and Tutte polynomials, reproving results of Huh-Katz and Berget-Spink-Tseng. Generalizing Postnikov, we show that these numbers are equal to certain weighted counts of binary trees. Lastly, we study these numbers for perfect matroid designs, proving that they generalize the remixed Eulerian numbers of Nadeau-Tewari.
