Abstract:The chameleon screening mechanism has been constrained many a time using dynamic and kinematic galaxy cluster observables. Current constraints are, however, insensitive to different mass components within galaxy clusters and have been mainly focused on a single mass density profile, the Navarro-Frenk-While mass density model. In this work, we extend the study of the Chameleon screening mechanism in galaxy clusters by considering a series of mass density models, namely: generalized-Navarro-Frenk-While, b-Navarro-Frenk-While, Burket, Isothermal and Einasto. The coupling strength ($\beta$) and asymptotic value of the chameleon field ($\phi_\infty$) are constrained by using kinematics analyses of simulated galaxy clusters, generated both assuming General Relativity and a strong chameleon scenario. By implementing a Bayesian analysis we comprehensively show that the biases introduced due to an incorrect assumption of the mass model are minimal. Similarly, we also demonstrate that a spurious detection of evidence for modifications to gravity is highly unlikely when utilizing the kinematics of galaxy clusters.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to explore the influence of different mass - density models on the Chameleon screening mechanism in galaxy clusters within the framework of modified gravity theories. Specifically, the paper mainly addresses the following problems: 1. **Constraints on the Chameleon screening mechanism**: - Current constraints on the Chameleon screening mechanism mainly focus on a single mass - density model (such as the Navarro - Frenk - White, NFW model), ignoring the influence of different mass components (such as baryonic matter and dark matter). By considering a series of different mass - density models (such as the generalized NFW, b - NFW, Burket, isothermal model and Einasto model), the paper extends the research on the Chameleon screening mechanism. 2. **Uncertainties in mass modeling**: - Different mass - density models may lead to different manifestations of the Chameleon field and the fifth force. By simulating the dynamic data of galaxy clusters, the paper evaluates the biases introduced by using incorrect mass - model assumptions and verifies the impact of these biases on the detection of modified - gravity evidence. 3. **Dynamical mass reconstruction**: - Using the Bayesian analysis method, the paper reconstructs the mass distribution by simulating the dynamic data of member galaxies in galaxy clusters. This helps to evaluate the constraining ability of different mass models on the Chameleon screening mechanism. ### Main research contents - **Theoretical background**: - Introduces the basic concepts of the Chameleon field theory, including its Lagrangian, equations of motion and effective potential. - Describes the mathematical forms of different mass - density models, such as NFW, b - NFW, generalized NFW, Burket, isothermal model and Einasto model. - **Semi - analytic solutions**: - Proposes a semi - analytic method to solve the Chameleon field equations. This method solves the field equations in low - density regions (i.e., the periphery of galaxy clusters) and matches the solutions in high - density regions (i.e., the center of galaxy clusters) through boundary conditions. - **Numerical verification**: - Verifies the accuracy of the semi - analytic solutions through numerical simulations. The results show that the semi - analytic solutions are highly consistent with the numerical solutions. - **Dynamical mass reconstruction**: - Uses an upgraded Cluster GEN code to generate synthetic, spherically symmetric, isolated dynamical equilibrium systems and simulates the dynamic data of member galaxies in galaxy clusters. - Evaluates the constraining ability of different mass models on the Chameleon screening mechanism through the Bayesian analysis method. ### Conclusions - By considering multiple mass - density models, the paper extends the research on the Chameleon screening mechanism. - The semi - analytic method can effectively describe the behavior of the Chameleon field and is highly consistent with the numerical solutions. - The biases introduced by using incorrect mass - model assumptions are small, so in actual observations, the possibility of false detection of modified - gravity evidence is low. Through these studies, the paper provides new insights into understanding the performance of the Chameleon screening mechanism on the scale of galaxy clusters and lays the foundation for future observational and theoretical research.
