Abstract:We investigate the Landau-Coulomb equation and show an explicit blow-down mechanism for a family of initial data that are small-scale, supercritical perturbations of a Maxwellian function. We establish global well-posedness and show that the initial bump region will disappear in a time of order one. We prove that the function remains close to an explicit function during the blow-down. As a consequence, our result shows exponential decay in time of the solution towards equilibrium. The key ingredients of our proof are the explicit blow-down function and a novel two-scale linearization in appropriate time-dependent spaces that yields uniform estimates in the perturbation parameter.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to solve the problems of regularization and decay mechanisms under super - critical perturbations of the Landau - Coulomb equation. Specifically, the author attempts to reveal the behavior of the equation's solutions under specific initial data and how they approach the equilibrium state. ### Core problems of the paper 1. **Regularization mechanism of super - critical perturbations**: - The author studied the Landau - Coulomb equation and showed that for a class of initial data (which are small - scale, super - critical perturbations of the Maxwellian function), there exists an explicit "blow - down" mechanism. - This mechanism indicates that within a certain period of time, the initial local singularity will disappear, and the solution will gradually approach an explicit function. 2. **Global well - posedness and exponential decay**: - The author proved global well - posedness and pointed out that the initial "bump region" will disappear in approximately unit time. - As part of the result, they also showed that the solution will tend to the equilibrium state at an exponential rate as time progresses. ### Specific content analysis - **Selection of initial data**: - The initial data is set as a Maxwellian function with a small - scale perturbation: \(\rho_{in}=\mathcal{M}+\epsilon^{\alpha}\mathcal{M}_{\epsilon}\), where \(\mathcal{M}\) is the Maxwellian function with a temperature of 1, and \(\mathcal{M}_{\epsilon}\) is the Maxwellian function with a temperature of \(\epsilon\). - The parameter \(\alpha\) satisfies \(0 < \alpha<\frac{1}{2}\), which makes the initial data have large values in some norms but small values in other norms. - **"Blow - down" mechanism**: - The solution can be decomposed into three parts: a fixed Maxwellian function, a local singularity (coming from the \(\epsilon^{\alpha}\mathcal{M}_{\epsilon}\) part in the initial data), and a small perturbation. - Among them, the local singularity \(\eta(t, v)\) is given by the following explicit function: \[ \eta(t, v)=A(t)\mathcal{M}_{\sigma(t)}, \quad \sigma(t):=\epsilon + 2\mu t, \quad A(t)=\frac{\epsilon^{\alpha}e^{-\frac{|v|^{2}}{2\sigma(t)}}}{(2\pi)^{3/2}\sigma(t)} \] - As time increases, the local singularity will gradually become smooth, and its norm will gradually decrease. - **Main conclusions**: - After a certain time \(t^*\), the solution \(\rho(t, v)\) will be very close to the unit Maxwellian function \(\mathcal{M}\), and satisfy: \[ \|\rho(t^*, \cdot)-\mathcal{M}\|_{L^{2}_{\mathcal{M}}}\leq C(1), \quad \text{when }\epsilon\rightarrow0 \] - Starting from \(t^*\), the distance between the solution and the equilibrium state will decay at an exponential rate. ### Summary The main contribution of this paper lies in revealing the regularization mechanism of the Landau - Coulomb equation under super - critical perturbations and proving that the solution will quickly approach the equilibrium state. By introducing new linearization methods and a two - scale framework, the author successfully controlled the local singularity and proved global well - posedness. This result provides important clues for further understanding the complex behavior of the Landau equation.
