Abstract:Per-channel launch power optimisation in a hybrid-amplified link with optimised pump powers and wavelengths is described. Compared to using the optimum spectrally uniform launch power, an average SNR gain of 0.13 dB is obtained against 0.56 dB for the same system operating with lumped amplifiers only.

Abstract:Symbiotic radio (SR) has recently been proposed to improve the spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency of the Internet of Things. Therefore, the resource allocation (RA) algorithm has always been a research hotspot in SR systems. However, most of the current RA algorithms have assumed only one backscatter device or perfect channel state information (CSI), which is unrealistic in practical SR systems. In this paper, we formulate a robust RA problem for a downlink SR system with imperfect CSI to maximize the system throughput and decrease transmission outages. Specifically, a throughput-maximization robust RA problem is formulated subject to the outage rate constraints of both the primary users and backscatter devices. To address the non-convex optimization problem, we design an iterative-based robust RA algorithm that exploits Bernstein-type inequality, successive convex approximation, S-procedure, and alternating optimization methods. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has a 16.41% throughput increment compared to the non-symbiotic algorithm. Moreover, the actual outage probability of the proposed algorithm is reduced by 65.15% compared to the non-robust algorithm.

Abstract:The generalized signal-to-noise ratio (GSNR) is a typical metric for quality of transmission (QoT), which in wideband systems may not be uniform without adjustment after multi-span transmission. In this study, we utilize a symmetric neural network structure including reverse and forward models to optimize the GSNR by controlling the transmitter launch power and the equalized power after the wavelength-selective switch (WSS) in both C- and C+L-band systems. The proposed digital twin (DT)-assisted method enables accurate GSNR optimization and adaptable adjustments based on physical conditions. Initially, a DT model is established using a neural network to accurately predict the GSNR in a five-span system, which is directly incorporated into half of the optimizer as the forward model. The optimal power is then derived from the middle layer between the inverse and forward models of the optimizer, thereby achieving convergence towards the target. For long-distance transmission, a cascaded model with the same structure is employed to obtain equalized power by configuring the transmitter and WSS in a ten-span system. Furthermore, we examine the optimization performance in dynamic links under various loads and achieve optimal results for C+L-band systems with a mean absolute error (MAE) of less than 0.75 dB. This study provides a promising solution for accurate margin provisioning, efficient network planning and optimization.

Abstract:Wireless-powered communication and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can complement each other for increasing energy utilization and spectrum efficiency by reconfiguring the surrounding radio environment, however, which has not been sufficiently studied by the existing works. In this paper, we propose a joint radio resource and passive beamforming optimization scheme for a downlink RIS-assisted wireless-powered communication network with a harvest-then-transmit protocol to improve system energy efficiency (EE). In the considered model, the single-antenna wireless devices (WDs) harvest wireless energy from a multi-antenna dedicated power station (PS) through the RIS in the downlink and transmit their independent information to a single-antenna receiver in the uplink by a time-division-multiple-access mode. Our goal is to maximize the total EE of all WDs. To make full use of the beamforming gain provided by both the PS and the RIS, we jointly optimize the active beamforming of the PS and the passive beamforming of the RIS. To deal with the challenging non-convex optimization problem with multiple coupled variables, we first consider fixing the passive beamforming, and converting the remaining radio resource allocation problem into an equivalent convex problem which is solved by using Lagrange dual theory. Then, we fix the optimized resource allocation parameters and optimize the passive beamforming of the RIS by using a semidefinite programming method. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves higher EE compared to the conventional schemes.

Abstract:A unified analytical framework for optimum power allocation in the unordered V-BLAST algorithm and its comparative performance analysis are presented. Compact closed-form approximations for the optimum power allocation are derived, based on average total and block error rates. The choice of the criterion has little impact on the power allocation and, overall, the optimum strategy is to allocate more power to lower step transmitters and less to higher ones. High-SNR approximations for optimized average block and total error rates are given. The SNR gain of optimization is rigorously defined and studied using analytical tools, including lower and upper bounds, high and low SNR approximations. The gain is upper bounded by the number of transmit antennas, for any modulation format and type of fading channel. While the average optimization is less complex than the instantaneous one, its performance is almost as good at high SNR. A measure of robustness of the optimized algorithm is introduced and evaluated. The optimized algorithm is shown to be robust to perturbations in individual and total transmit powers. Based on the algorithm robustness, a pre-set power allocation is suggested as a low-complexity alternative to the other optimization strategies, which exhibits only a minor loss in performance over the practical SNR range.

Abstract:In this letter, we study the spatial multiplexing throughputs of multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems with fixed modulation and coding scheme (i.e., fixed peak rate) based on measurement of the universal software radio peripheral (USRP) in a reverberation chamber. In particular, we propose a simple inverse power allocation scheme for the singular value decomposition (SVD)-based MIMO system. Using the proposed power allocation, the power saving (for achieving the same throughput), compared to the SVD-MIMO without power allocation, is about 2.5 dB. Good agreement is observed between the USRP measurement and the simulation.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, we study the optimal design for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in cognitive radio networks (CRNs), where each secondary receiver (SR) can harvest energy and decode information using the signals received from the secondary transmitter (ST). It is assumed that the ST and SR adopt orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. Each SR uses the power splitting (PS) to coordinate the process of energy harvesting (EH) and information decoding (ID). The optimization problem of maximizing the energy efficiency of the secondary system is formulated. In particular, in order to accurately analyze the uncertain channel state information (CSI) and improve the performance of wireless networks in dynamic environments, the probability constraints are introduced. To settle this non-convex problem, the nonlinear fractional programming is utilized. Then we decompose the equivalent optimization problem into two convex subproblems, and the probability constraints of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) are converted to deterministic ones by integral transformation. An efficient iterative algorithm for robust resource allocation is presented. Finally, simulation results have verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.</p>

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel network framework of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks, where IRS is used to enhance the NOMA performance and the wireless power transfer (WPT) efficiency of SWIPT. We formulate a problem of minimizing base station (BS) transmit power by jointly optimizing successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding order, BS transmit beamforming vector, power splitting (PS) ratio and IRS phase shift while taking into account the quality-of-service (QoS) requirement and energy harvested threshold of each user. The formulated problem is non-convex optimization problem, which is difficult to solve it directly. Hence, a two-stage algorithm is proposed to solve the above-mentioned problem by applying semidefinite relaxation (SDR), Gaussian randomization and successive convex approximation (SCA). Specifically, after determining SIC decoding order by designing IRS phase shift in the first stage, we alternately optimize BS transmit beamforming vector, PS ratio, and IRS phase shift to minimize the BS transmit power. Numerical results validate the effectiveness of our proposed optimization algorithm in reducing BS transmit power compared to other baseline algorithms. Meanwhile, compared with non-IRS-assisted network, the IRS-assisted SWIPT NOMA network can decrease BS transmit power by 51.13%.

Abstract:Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) can enhance the spectrum and power efficiencies of wireless communications networks. Line-of-sight (LOS) transmission is a typical SWIPT scenario. However, the strong channel correlation limits the spectrum and energy efficiencies of SWIPT in the LOS channel. Due to the orthogonal wavefronts, orbital angular momentum (OAM) waves can facilitate the SWIPT in LOS channels. With the assistance of the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), both the energy efficiency and capacity can be further improved for the OAM-SWIPT systems. In this paper, we model the RIS-assisted OAM-SWIPT transmission and derive the optimal reflection coefficients and power splitting ratio for it. We first give the system and channel models. Then, we propose the transmission scheme. Based on the transmission scheme, we formulate the capacity and energy harvesting (EH) trade-off problem. We solve the problem by developing an alternating optimization algorithm. Simulations validate the capacity and EH enhancements brought by the RIS for OAM-SWIPT.

Abstract:To explore the potential of multiple collaborative reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) for wireless-powered backscatter communications (WP-BackCom), in this paper, we investigate a robust energy efficiency (EE) optimization problem for a double-RIS-assisted WP-BackCom system, where a power station (PS) transmits wireless energy signals to multiple backscatter devices (BDs) via one RIS during the energy-harvesting phase, and then all BDs use the harvested energy for active transmission via another RIS. The total EE of all BDs with bounded channel uncertainties is maximized by jointly optimizing the beamforming vectors of the PS and RISs, transmission power, reflection coefficients, and time allocation factors. To solve the challenging problem, an iterative robust resource allocation algorithm is designed by employing the alteration optimization approach, the worst-case approach, the penalty function method, and the Gaussian randomization method. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm has strong robustness and higher EE.

Abstract:To increase the receiving sensitivity of the reversely single-sideband (RSSB) system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal transmission, we use the improved pilot interval scheme and pilot power scheme in this system. The improved pilot interval scheme uses more pilots in areas where channel conditions are relatively good to avoid signal–signal beat interference (SSBI) issues for sub-carriers. The improved pilot power scheme compensates for frequency-selective fading by increasing the pilot power in areas where channel conditions are relatively poor. According to the simulation, the generated 60 GHz optical millimeter wave with 2.5 G bandwidth OFDM signal is delivered over 100 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). The improved pilot interval scheme and pilot power scheme can increase the system’s receiving sensitivity by 2 dB, respectively. These schemes can enhance the system’s performance without increasing the complexity of the algorithm and the costs of the RSSB system.

Abstract:This letter considers a downlink multi-input single-out (MISO) system where each user performs simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) based on a power splitting receiver architecture. Assuming imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station, we develop two robust joint beamforming and power splitting (BFPS) designs that minimize the transmission power under both the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and energy harvesting (EH) constraints per user. In the first design, we consider the worst-case (WC) SINR and EH constraints, and show that the WC-BFPS problem can be relaxed as a semidefinite program (SDP) through a linear matrix inequality representation for (infinitely many) robust quadratic matrix inequality constraints. In the second design, we consider the chance constraints (CCs) for SINR and EH, and resort to both semidefinite relaxation and Bernstein-type inequality restriction to transform the CC-BFPS problem into another convex SDP. Based on these convex reformulations, the (near-)optimal robust BFPS designs can be efficiently solved. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the merit of the proposed robust designs.
Radio Resource Management Design for RSMA: Optimization of Beamforming, User Admission, and Discrete/Continuous Rates with Imperfect SIC

Abstract:This paper investigates the radio resource management (RRM) design for multiuser rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), accounting for various characteristics of practical wireless systems, such as the use of discrete rates, the inability to serve all users, and the imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). Specifically, failure to consider these characteristics in RRM design may lead to inefficient use of radio resources. Therefore, we formulate the RRM of RSMA as optimization problems to maximize respectively the weighted sum rate (WSR) and weighted energy efficiency (WEE), and jointly optimize the beamforming, user admission, discrete/continuous rates, accounting for imperfect SIC, which result in nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programs that are challenging to solve. Despite the difficulty of the optimization problems, we develop algorithms that can find high-quality solutions. We show via simulations that carefully accounting for the aforementioned characteristics, can lead to significant gains. Precisely, by considering that transmission rates are discrete, the transmit power can be utilized more intelligently, allocating just enough power to guarantee a given discrete rate. Additionally, we reveal that user admission plays a crucial role in RSMA, enabling additional gains compared to random admission by facilitating the servicing of selected users with mutually beneficial channel characteristics. Furthermore, provisioning for possibly imperfect SIC makes RSMA more robust and reliable.

Optimization of Long-Haul C+L+S Systems by means of a Closed Form EGN Model

Abstract:We investigate C+L+S long-haul systems using a closed-form GN/EGN non-linearity model. We perform accurate launch power and Raman pump optimization. We show a potential 4x throughput increase over legacy C-band systems in 1000 km links, using moderate S-only Raman amplification. We simultaneously achieve extra-flat GSNR, within +/-0.5 dB across the whole C+L+S spectrum.

An Optimal Spectrum Sharing Method for MIMO Cognitive Radio Networks.

Abstract:This paper investigates the resource optimization problem for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio (CR) networks. Different from the conventional works, a novel optimization metric, namely the bandwidth-power product (BPP), is used to achieve the optimal spectrum sharing. We apply the direct-channel singular value decomposition (DC-SVD) method to design the optimal source precoding matrix. Then the unified power and channel allocation problem is derived and found to be a mixed-integer programming problem. Hence, a sub-optimal and tractable algorithm with low complexity called the joint iterative power and channel optimization (JIPCO) algorithm is proposed. Furthermore, the discrete particle swarm optimization (DPSO) algorithm is introduced to approximately provide an upper bound. Numerical results show that the JIPCO algorithm achieves the acceptable performance with great reduction of computation complexity and validate the superiority of the proposed scheme compared to conventional power optimization scheme using the water-filling method.

Abstract:This paper investigates reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) networks with rate splitting multiple access (RSMA). An energy efficiency (EE) maximization problem is formulated subject to the power budget at the transmitter and the quality of service (QoS) requirements of both information communication and energy harvesting, where the beamforming vectors, the power splitting (PS) ratios, the common message rates, and the discrete phase shifts are jointly optimized. To tackle the non-convex problem with both discrete and continuous variables, a deep reinforcement learning-based approach is proposed with the proximal policy optimization (PPO) framework. Different from traditional optimization approaches which optimizes the beamforming vectors and phase shifts separately and alternatively, our proposed PPO-based approach optimizes all the variables in unison. Besides, to perform beamforming design in action space, the beamforming vectors for the common stream and the private stream are respectively designed based on the maximum-ratio transmission and the zero forcing to enhance both energy and information transmission. To evaluate the performance of the PPO-based approach, a successive convex approximation (SCA) and Dinkelbach's method based solution scheme (named SCA-D scheme) is also presented. Simulation results show that the system EE obtained by the proposed PPO-based approach is close to that obtained by the SCA-D scheme while outperforming various benchmarks. The RSMA contributes to the EE of the system greatly compared with traditional scheme. As for the case of time-varying channels, the proposed PPO-based approach is with much smaller running time by only sacrificing a slight EE performance compared with the SCA-D scheme.

Abstract:This letter focuses on a novel resource allocation design for a multi-reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multi-input and single-output (MISO) ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) system. In particular, we formulate the sum-rate maximization problem for joint optimization of block-length and packet-error probability for each user, precoder design at the base-station (BS) and passive beamforming at the RIS. To solve it, we provide an alternating optimization framework which involves the decoupling of original problem into the sub-problems of beamforming design and block-length optimization, and later solving them using general convex approximations. Numerical results validate the fast convergence of the proposed solution. Moreover, the proposed solution achieves upto 40% better performance when compared to random resource allocation and each RIS deployment boost the rate performance by 3–5%.

Abstract:This paper considers a cooperative cognitive radio network with two primary users (PUs) and two secondary users (SUs) that enables two-way communications of primary and secondary systems in conjunction with non-linear energy harvesting based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). With the considered network, SUs are able to realize their communications over the licensed spectrum while extending relay assistance to the PUs. The overall bidirectional end-to-end transmission takes place in four phases, which include both energy harvesting (EH) and information transfer. A non-linear energy harvester with a hybrid SWIPT scheme is adopted in which both power-splitting and time-switching EH techniques are used. The SUs aid in relay cooperation by performing an amplify-and-forward operation, whereas selection combining technique is adopted at the PUs to extract the intended signal from multiple received signals broadcasted by the SUs. Accurate outage probability expressions for the primary and secondary links are derived under the Nakagami-$m$ fading environment. Further, the system behavior is analyzed with respect to achievable system throughput and energy efficiency. Since the performance of the considered system is strongly affected by the spectrum sharing factor and hybrid SWIPT parameters, particle swarm optimization is implemented to optimize the system parameters so as to maximize the system throughput and energy efficiency. Simulation results are provided to corroborate the performance analysis and give useful insights into the system behavior concerning various system/channel parameters.
