Abstract:When extending the SM, e.g. with vector-like quarks (VLQ), one inevitably encounters more than one CP violating complex phases. In this work, we develop a method useful in reducing the number of complex phases in scenarios with one and two VLQs. We show that these VLQ-models can be described with just one or two physical complex phases respectively and present an explicit alternative parametrization for the quark mixing matrix. Making use of this Reduction of Complex Phases in the case of the Bento-Branco-Parada (BBP) model, i.e. the simplest implementation of the Nelson-Barr solution to the strong CP problem, one also recovers the single phase formulation of BBP model. We comment on how this specific scenario can be distinguished from the general VLQ case with weak-basis invariants

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: when extending the Standard Model (SM), especially in the case of introducing vector - like quarks (VLQs), how to reduce the number of CP - violating complex phases. Specifically, the author has developed a method for reducing the number of complex phases in one - and two - VLQ scenarios and has shown that these VLQ models can be described with one or two physical complex phases. In addition, the author has also explored how to distinguish specific scenarios (such as the Bento - Branco - Parada (BBP) model) from the general VLQ case through weak basis invariants (WBIs). ### Detailed Explanation of the Main Problem 1. **Complexity of CP Violation**: - In the Standard Model, CP violation is caused by a single complex phase in the CKM matrix. - After introducing VLQs, additional complex coupling terms will lead to more physical phases, which may enhance CP violation. 2. **Reduction of Complex Phases**: - The author proposes a technique for reducing complex phases (Reduction of Complex Phases, RCP). Through this method, the number of independent complex phases can be reduced while keeping the number of physical parameters unchanged. - For the case of a VLQ singlet, all CP - violating - sensitive weak basis invariants can be simplified to depend only on one complex phase. 3. **Application of the BBP Model**: - The BBP model is an implementation of the Nelson - Barr mechanism, aiming to solve the strong CP problem. - Through the RCP technique, the author has proven that in the BBP model, the complex phase can be reduced to one without affecting the strong CP parameter \(\bar{\theta}\). 4. **CP Violation in the High - Energy Limit**: - In the extreme chiral limit (ECL), that is, at extremely high energies, the complex phase in the BBP model becomes non - physical and can be removed by redefining the fields, which means that there is no CP violation in this limit. - This is different from the general VLQ singlet case, in which CP violation may exist even in the high - energy limit. ### Formula Summary - **Measure of CP Violation**: \[ J_{\text{SM}} = | \Im(V_{12}V_{23}V^*_{22}V^*_{13}) | = c_{12}c_{23}c^2_{13}s_{12}s_{23}s_{13}|\sin\delta| \] \[ I_{\text{SM}} = |\det([h_u,h_d]_3)| = \Delta_0 J_{\text{SM}} \] - **Weak Basis Invariants (WBIs)**: \[ I_d = \Im(\text{Tr}[h_u h_d h_d]) \] \[ I_0 = \Im(\text{Tr}[h_d, h_u]^3) = \Delta \sin\alpha \] - **Mass Matrix of the BBP Model**: \[ M_d = \begin{pmatrix} vY_d & 0 \\ C & M \end{pmatrix} \] where \(C=(r_1 e^{i\alpha_1}, r_2 e^{i\alpha_2}, r_3 e^{i\alpha_3})\) contains complex coupling terms. Through these methods and formulas, the author shows how to effectively reduce the number of CP - violating complex phases and provides a deep understanding of the differences between different models.
