Abstract:Let $X$ be a Calabi-Yau threefold with an elliptic fibration. We investigate the non-linear Riemann-Hilbert problems associated to the Donaldson-Thomas theory of fibre classes, and relate them to the Borel sum of the $A$-model topological string free energy for such classes.

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:We briefly survey our recent results about the Mumford goodness of several canonical metrics on the moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, including the Weil-Petersson metric, the Ricci metric, the Perturbed Ricci metric and the Kahler-Einstein metric. We prove the dual Nakano negativity of the Weil-Petersson metric. As applications of these results we deduce certain important results about the L 2 -cohomology groups of the logarithmic tangent bundle over the compactified moduli spaces.
Invariant Stability Conditions on Certain Calabi-Yau Threefolds

Abstract:We apply results on inducing stability conditions to local Calabi-Yau threefolds and obtain applications to Donaldson-Thomas (DT) theory. A basic example is the total space of the canonical bundle of $Z=\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$. We use a result of Dell to construct stability conditions on the derived category of $X$ for which all stable objects can be explicitly described. We relate them to stability conditions on the resolved conifold $Y=\mathscr{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}(-1)^{\oplus 2}$ in two ways: geometrically via the McKay correspondence, and algebraically via a quotienting operation on quivers with potential. These stability conditions were first discussed in the physics literature by Closset and del Zotto, and were constructed mathematically by Xiong by a different method. We obtain a complete description of the corresponding DT invariants, from which we can conclude that they define analytic wall-crossing structures in the sense of Kontsevich and Soibelman. In the last section we discuss several other examples of a similar flavour.

Pandharipande-Thomas theory of elliptic threefolds, quasi-Jacobi forms and holomorphic anomaly equations

Abstract:Let $\pi : X \to B$ be an elliptically fibered threefold satisfying $c_3(T_X \otimes \omega_X)=0$. We conjecture that the $\pi$-relative generating series of Pandharipande-Thomas invariants of $X$ are quasi-Jacobi forms and satisfy two holomorphic anomaly equations. For elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds our conjectures specialize to the Huang-Katz-Klemm conjecture. The proposed formulas constitute the first case of holomorphic anomaly equations in Pandharipande-Thomas theory. We prove our conjectures for the equivariant Pandharipande-Thomas theory of $\mathbb{C}^2 \times E$ when specialized to the anti-diagonal action. For $K3 \times \mathbb{C}$ we state reduced versions of our conjectures. As a corollary we find an explicit conjectural formula for the stationary theory generalizing the Katz-Klemm-Vafa formula for K3 surfaces. Further evidence is available for $\mathbb{P}^2 \times E$ based on earlier work of the second author. To deal with elliptic threefolds with $c_3(T_X \otimes \omega_X) \neq 0$ we show that the moduli space of $\pi$-stable pairs is represented by a proper algebraic space. We conjecture that the associated $\pi$-stable pair invariants form quasi-Jacobi forms.

Moduli spaces of sheaves on Fano threefolds and K3 surfaces of genus 9

Abstract:A complex smooth prime Fano threefold $X$ of genus $9$ is related via projective duality to a quartic plane curve $\Gamma$. We use this setup to study the restriction of rank $2$ stable sheaves with prescribed Chern classes on $X$ to an anticanonical $K3$ surface $S\subset X$. Varying the threefold $X$ containing $S$ gives a rational Lagrangian fibration $$\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7) \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^3$$ with generic fibre birational to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_X(2,1,7)$ of sheaves on $X$. Moreover, we prove that this rational fibration extends to an actual fibration on a birational model $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$. In a last part, we use Bridgeland stability conditions to exhibit all $K$-trivial smooth birational models of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$, which consist in itself and $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that these models are related by a flop, and we describe the positive, movable and nef cones of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue the study of boundedness questions for (simply connected) smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds commenced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1706.01268" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.01268">arXiv:1706.01268</a>. The diffeomorphism class of such a threefold is known to be determined up to finitely many possibilities by the integral middle cohomology and two integral forms on the integral second cohomology, namely the cubic cup-product form and the linear form given by cup-product with the second chern class. The question addressed in both papers is whether knowledge of these cubic and linear forms determines the threefold up to finitely many families, that is the moduli of such threefolds is bounded. If this is true, then in particular the middle integral cohomology would be bounded by knowing these two forms. Crucial to this question is the study of rigid non-movable surfaces on the threefold, which are the irreducible surfaces that deform with any small deformation of the complex structure of the threefold but for which no multiple moves on the threefold. We showed in the previous paper that if there are no such surfaces, then the answer to the above question is yes. Moreover if the Picard number is 2, the answer was shown to be yes without any further assumptions on the Calabi-Yau threefold. The main results of this paper are for Picard number 3, where we prove boundedness in the case where there is at most one rigid non-movable surface, assuming the cubic form is smooth (thereby defining a real elliptic curve); in the two cases where the Hessian curve is singular, we also assume that the line defined by the second chern class does not intersect this curve at an inflexion point. In addition to the methods described in the previous paper, a further crucial tool in the proofs will be the classical Steinian involution on the Hessian of an elliptic curve.

On the Monodromy of the Moduli Space of Calabi–Yau Threefolds Coming from Eight Planes in $${\Mathbb{p}^3}$$

Abstract:It is a fundamental problem in geometry to decide which moduli spaces of polarized algebraic varieties are embedded by their period maps as Zariski open subsets of locally Hermitian symmetric domains. In the present work we prove that the moduli space of Calabi–Yau threefolds coming from eight planes in ${\mathbb{P}^3}$ does not have this property. We show furthermore that the monodromy group of a good family is Zariski dense in the corresponding symplectic group. Moreover, we study a natural sublocus which we call hyperelliptic locus, over which the variation of Hodge structures is naturally isomorphic to wedge product of a variation of Hodge structures of weight one. It turns out the hyperelliptic locus does not extend to a Shimura subvariety of type III (Siegel space) within the moduli space. Besides general Hodge theory, representation theory and computational commutative algebra, one of the proofs depends on a new result on the tensor product decomposition of complex polarized variations of Hodge structures.
New perspectives on categorical Torelli theorems for del Pezzo threefolds

Abstract:Let $Y_d$ be a del Pezzo threefold of Picard rank one and degree $d\geq 2$. In this paper, we apply two different viewpoints to study $Y_d$ via a particular admissible subcategory of its bounded derived category, called the Kuznetsov component: (i) Brill-Noether reconstruction. We show that $Y_d$ can be uniquely recovered as a Brill-Noether locus of Bridgeland stable objects in its Kuznetsov component. (ii) Exact equivalences. We prove that, up to composing with an explicit auto-equivalence, any Fourier-Mukai type equivalence of Kuznetsov components of two del Pezzo threefolds of degree $2\leq d\leq 4$ can be lifted to an equivalence of their bounded derived categories. As a result, we obtain a complete description of the group of Fourier-Mukai type auto-equivalences of the Kuznetsov component of $Y_d$. We also describe the group of Fourier-Mukai type auto-equivalences of Kuznetsov components of index one prime Fano threefolds $X_{2g-2}$ of genus $g=6$ and $8$. As an application, first we identify the group of automorphisms of $X_{14}$ and its associated $Y_3$. Then we give a new disproof of Kuznetsov's Fano threefold conjecture by assuming Gushel-Mukai threefolds are general. In an appendix, we classify instanton sheaves on quartic double solids, generalizing a result of Druel.

New non-commutative resolutions of determinantal Calabi-Yau threefolds from hybrid GLSM

Abstract:We study topological strings on non-commutative resolutions of singular Calabi-Yau threefolds that are double covers of $\mathbb{P}^3$, ramified over determinantal octic surfaces. Using conifold transitions to complete intersections in toric ambient spaces, we prove that any small resolution has 2-torsional exceptional curves and is necessarily non-Kähler. The same transitions imply that M-theory develops a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry on the singular space. We then construct gauged linear sigma models with hybrid phases that flow to the worldsheet theories of strings propagating on the determinantal double solids in the presence of a flat but topologically non-trivial B-field. Localizing the sphere partition function allows us to calculate the fundamental periods of the mirror Calabi-Yau manifolds, then we check agreement with the periods of the Borisov-Li mirrors. We find that the corresponding variations of Hodge structure either correspond to one of the 14 hypergeometric cases or to a double cover thereof. We then use mirror symmetry and integrate the holomorphic anomaly equations to calculate $\mathbb{Z}_2$-refined Gopakumar-Vafa invariants for several examples.

Abstract:We determine several classes of smooth complex projective surfaces on which Zariski decomposition can be combined with vanishing theorems to yield cohomology formulae for all line bundles. The obtained formulae express cohomologies in terms of divisor class intersections, and are adapted to the decomposition of the effective cone into Zariski chambers. In particular, we show this occurs on generalised del Pezzo surfaces, toric surfaces, and K3 surfaces. In the second part we use these surface results to derive formulae for all line bundle cohomology on a simple class of elliptically fibered Calabi–Yau three-folds. Computing such quantities is a crucial step in deriving the massless spectrum in string compactifications.

Abstract:The present Lecture Notes have been prepared to back up a series of a few seminars given by the author at the Albert Einstein Institute in Potsdam. These Notes aim at reviewing a research project conducted over the last six years about a quite interesting and challenging topic, namely the use of the generalized Kronheimer construction and the generalized McKay correspondence for the crepant resolution $Y^\Gamma_{[3]} \to \frac{\mathbb{C}^3}{\Gamma}$ of orbifold singularities, $\Gamma$ being s finite subgroup of $\mathrm{SU(3)}$, as a strategic tool to construct holographic dual pairs of $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories in $D=4$ and D3-brane solutions of type IIB supergravity. The project, developed by Ugo Bruzzo with the present author, in various co-authorships with Massimo Bianchi, Anna Fino, Pietro Antonio Grassi, Dimitry Markushevich, Dario Martelli, Mario Trigiante and Umar Shahzad, is still going on and there are a lot of interesting unanswered questions that are illustrated throughout these Lecture Notes and particularly emphasized in its last chapter. The mathematical roots of this project are very robust and ramified in differential geometry, group theory and algebraic geometry. A particularly challenging issue is that of constructing Ricci flat metrics on the total space of line-bundles over compact Kähler manifolds of real dimension four. In that direction the symplectic action/angle formalism turns out to be a winning weapon. The ultimate goal is that of deducing all the aspects of holographic duality from finite group theory or, to be more precise, SU(3) finite subgroups

Equivariant Moduli Theory on $ K3 $ Surfaces

Abstract:In this paper we study equivariant moduli spaces of sheaves on a $ K3 $ surface $ X $ under a symplectic action of a finite group. We prove that under some mild conditions, equivariant moduli spaces of sheaves on $ X $ are irreducible symplectic manifolds deformation equivalent to Hilbert schemes of points on $ X $ via a connection between Gieseker and Bridgeland moduli spaces, as well as the derived McKay correspondence.

Abstract:We study infinite-distance limits in the complex structure moduli space of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. In F-theory compactifications to six dimensions, such limits include infinite-distance trajectories in the non-perturbative open string moduli space. The limits are described as degenerations of elliptic threefolds whose central elements exhibit non-minimal elliptic fibers, in the Kodaira sense, over curves on the base. We show how these non-crepant singularities can be removed by a systematic sequence of blow-ups of the base, leading to a union of log Calabi-Yau spaces glued together along their boundaries. We identify criteria for the blow-ups to give rise to open chains or more complicated trees of components and analyse the blow-up geometry. While our results are general and applicable to all non-minimal degenerations of Calabi-Yau threefolds in codimension one, we exemplify them in particular for elliptic threefolds over Hirzebruch surface base spaces. We also explain how to extract the gauge algebra for F-theory probing such reducible asymptotic geometries. This analysis is the basis for a detailed F-theory interpretation of the associated infinite-distance limits that will be provided in a companion paper [1].

Abstract:We obtain analytic and numerical results for the non-perturbative amplitudes of topological string theory on arbitrary, compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. Our approach is based on the theory of resurgence and extends previous special results to the more general case. In particular, we obtain explicit trans-series solutions of the holomorphic anomaly equations. Our results predict the all orders, large genus asymptotics of the topological string free energies, which we test in detail against high genus perturbative series obtained recently in the compact case. We also provide additional evidence that the Stokes constants appearing in the resurgent structure are closely related to integer BPS invariants.

The period-index conjecture for abelian threefolds and Donaldson-Thomas theory

Abstract:We prove the period-index conjecture for unramified Brauer classes on abelian threefolds. To do so, we develop a theory of reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants for 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau categories, with the feature that the noncommutative variational integral Hodge conjecture holds for classes with nonvanishing invariant. The period-index result is then proved by interpreting it as the algebraicity of a Hodge class on the twisted derived category, and specializing within the Hodge locus to an untwisted abelian threefold with nonvanishing invariant. As a consequence, we also deduce the integral Hodge conjecture for generically twisted abelian threefolds.

Curves on K3 surfaces and modular forms

Abstract:We study the virtual geometry of the moduli spaces of curves and sheaves on K3 surfaces in primitive classes. Equivalences relating the reduced Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces to characteristic numbers of stable pairs moduli spaces are proven. As a consequence, we prove the Katz-Klemm-Vafa conjecture evaluating $\lambda_g$ integrals (in all genera) in terms of explicit modular forms. Indeed, all K3 invariants in primitive classes are shown to be governed by modular forms. The method of proof is by degeneration to elliptically fibered rational surfaces. New formulas relating reduced virtual classes on K3 surfaces to standard virtual classes after degeneration are needed for both maps and sheaves. We also prove a Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for toric 3-folds. Our approach uses a result of Kiem and Li to produce reduced classes. In Appendix A, we answer a number of questions about the relationship between the Kiem-Li approach, traditional virtual cycles, and symmetric obstruction theories. The interplay between the boundary geometry of the moduli spaces of curves, K3 surfaces, and modular forms is explored in Appendix B by A. Pixton.

Abstract:We develop a combinatorial approach to the construction of general smooth compact base surfaces that support elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. This extends previous analyses that have relied on toric or semi-toric structure. The resulting algorithm is used to construct all classes of such base surfaces $S$ with $h^{1, 1} (S) < 8$ and all base surfaces over which there is an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ with Hodge number $h^{2, 1} (X) \geq 150$. These two sets can be used todescribe all 6D F-theory models that have fewer than seven tensor multiplets or more than 150 neutral scalar fields respectively in their maximally Higgsed phase. Technical challenges to constructing the complete list of base surfaces for all Hodge numbers are discussed.

Abstract:We present a method to construct the extended Kähler cone of any Calabi-Yau threefold by using Gopakumar-Vafa invariants to identify all geometric phases that are related by flops or Weyl reflections. In this way we obtain the Kähler moduli spaces of all favorable Calabi-Yau threefold hypersurfaces with $h^{1,1} \le 4$, including toric and non-toric phases. In this setting we perform an explicit test of the Weak Gravity Conjecture by using the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants to count BPS states. All of our examples satisfy the tower/sublattice WGC, and in fact they even satisfy the stronger lattice WGC.
