Abstract:We show that the universal covering space of a connected component of a regular level set of a smooth complex valued function on ${\mathbb{C}}^2$, which is a smooth affine Riemann surface, is ${\mathbb{R}}^2$. This implies that the orbit space of the action of the covering group on ${\mathbb{R}}^2$ is the original affine Riemann surface.

Abstract:A classification of normal affine surfaces admitting a $\bf C^*$-action was given in the work of Białynicki-Birula, Fieseler and L. Kaup, Orlik and Wagreich, Rynes and others. We provide a simple alternative description of such surfaces in terms of their graded rings as well as by defining equations. This is based on a generalization of the Dolgachev-Pinkham-Demazure construction in the case of a hyperbolic grading. As an apllication we determine the structure of singularities, of the orbits and the divisor class groups for such surfaces.

Abstract:We study some basic properties related to affine functions on Riemannian manifolds. A characterization for a function to be linear affine is given and a counterexample on Poincaré plane is provided, which, in particular, shows that assertions (i) and (ii) claimed by Papa Quiroz in (J Convex Anal 16(1):49–69, 2009, Proposition 3.4) are not true, and that the function involved in assertion (ii) is indeed not quasi-convex. Furthermore, we discuss the convexity properties of the sub-level sets of the function on Riemannian manifolds with constant sectional curvatures.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to study GL(2,R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata of abelian differentials. The main result is that all higher rank affine invariant submanifolds in hyperelliptic components are branched covering constructions, i.e. every translation surface in the affine invariant submanifold covers a translation surface in a lower genus hyperelliptic component of a stratum of abelian differentials. This result implies finiteness of algebraically primitive Teichmuller curves in all hyperelliptic components for genus greater than two. A classification of all GL(2, R) orbit closures in hyperelliptic components of strata (up to computing connected components and up to finitely many nonarithmetic rank one orbit closures) is provided. Our main theorem resolves a pair of conjectures of Mirzakhani in the case of hyperelliptic components of moduli space.

Abstract:Rafi and Schleimer recently proved that the natural relation between curve complexes induced by a covering map between two surfaces is a quasi-isometric embedding. We offer another proof of this result using a distance estimate via hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a hyperbolic oriented Riemann surface of finite type. The main purpose of this paper is to show that non-trivial geometric intersection between closed curves on $S$ is detected by some symplectic submodules they naturally determine in the homology groups of the compactifications of unramified $p$-coverings of $S$, for $p\geq 2$ a fixed prime. In particular, this gives a characterization of simple closed curves on $S$ in terms of homology groups of $p$-coverings. We then define a $p$-adic Reidemeister pairing on the fundamental group of $S$ and show that the free homotopy classes of two loops have trivial geometric intersection if and only if they are orthogonal with respect to this pairing. As an application, we give a geometric argument to prove that oriented surface groups are conjugacy $p$-separable (a combinatorial proof of this fact was recentely given by Paris).

A note on an effective characterization of covers with an application to higher rank representations

Abstract:In this note we prove an effective characterization of when two finite-degree covers of a connected, orientable surface of negative Euler characteristic are isomorphic in terms of which curves have simple elevations, weakening the hypotheses to consider curves with explicitly bounded self-intersection number. As an application we show that for sufficiently large N, the set of unmarked traces associated to simple closed curves in a generically chosen representation to SL(N, R) distinguishes between pairs of non-isomorphic covers.

On C$^2$-smooth Surfaces of Constant Width

Abstract:A number of results for C$^2$-smooth surfaces of constant width in Euclidean 3-space ${\mathbb{E}}^3$ are obtained. In particular, an integral inequality for constant width surfaces is established. This is used to prove that the ratio of volume to cubed width of a constant width surface is reduced by shrinking it along its normal lines. We also give a characterization of surfaces of constant width that have rational support function. Our techniques, which are complex differential geometric in nature, allow us to construct explicit smooth surfaces of constant width in ${\mathbb{E}}^3$, and their focal sets. They also allow for easy construction of tetrahedrally symmetric surfaces of constant width.

Abstract:We consider certain analytic correspondences on a Riemann surface, and show that they admit a weak form of expansion. In terms of their algebraic encoding by bisets, this translates to contraction of group elements along sequences arising from iterated lifting. As an application, we show that for every non-exceptional rational map on $\mathbb{P}^1$ with $4$ post-critical points, there is a finite collection of isotopy classes of curves into which every curve eventually lands under iterated lifting.

Abstract:Generalizing the notion of domains of dependence in the Minkowski space, we define and study regular domains in the affine space with respect to a proper convex cone. In dimension three, we show that every proper regular domain is uniquely foliated by a particular kind of surfaces with constant affine Gaussian curvature. The result is based on the analysis of a Monge-Amp\`ere equation with extended-real-valued lower semicontinuous boundary condition.

Abstract:We investigate the topological structures of Galois covers of a union of two Zappatic surfaces of type $R_k$. We prove that the Galois covers of such surfaces are simply-connected surfaces of general type. We also compute their Chern numbers and topological indices.

Abstract:For any maximal surface group representation into $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,n+1)$, we introduce a non-degenerate scalar product on the the first cohomology group of the surface with values in the associated flat bundle. In particular, it gives rise to a non-degenerate Riemannian metric on the smooth locus of the subset consisting of maximal representations inside the character variety. In the case $n=2$, we carefully study the properties of the Riemannian metric on the maximal connected components, proving that it is compatible with the orbifold structure and finding some totally geodesic sub-varieties. Then, in the general case, we explain when a representation with Zariski closure contained in $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,3)$ represents a smooth or orbifold point in the maximal $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,n+1)$-character variety and we show that the associated space is totally geodesic for any $n\ge 3$.

Abstract:We determine all affinely homogeneous models for surfaces $S^2 \subset \mathbb{R}^4$, including the simply transitive models. We employ an improved power series method of equivalence, which captures invariants at the origin, creates branches, and infinitesimalizes calculations. We find several inequivalent terminal branches yielding each to some nonempty moduli space of homogeneous models, sometimes parametrized by a certain invariant algebraic variety. Three main features may be emphasized: 1) Iterated single-pointed jet bundles; 2) Cartan-enhanced power series method of equivalence; 3) Constant ping-pong between normal forms (nf) and vector fields (vf).

Geometry on surfaces, a source for mathematical developments

Abstract:We present a variety of geometrical and combinatorial tools that are used in the study of geometric structures on surfaces: volume, contact, symplectic, complex and almost complex structures. We start with a series of local rigidity results for such structures. Higher-dimensional analogues are also discussed. Some constructions with Riemann surfaces lead, by analogy, to notions that hold for arbitrary fields, and not only the field of complex numbers. The Riemann sphere is also defined using surjective homomorphisms of real algebras from the ring of real univariate polynomials to (arbitrary) fields, in which the field with one element is interpreted as the point at infinity of the Gaussian plane of complex numbers. Several models of the hyperbolic plane and hyperbolic 3-space appear, defined in terms of complex structures on surfaces, and in particular also a rather elementary construction of the hyperbolic plane usingreal monic univariate polynomials of degree two without real roots. Several notions and problems connected with conformal structures in dimension 2 are discussed, including dessins d'enfants, the combinatorial characterization of polynomials and rational maps of the sphere, the type problem, uniformization, quasiconformal mappings, Thurston's characterization of Speiser graphs, stratifications of spaces of monic polynomials, and others. Symmetries of geodesic flows on covers and rigidity

Abstract:We define and study the foliated centralizer: the group of $C^\infty$ centralizer elements of the lift of an Anosov system on a non-compact manifold which additionally preserve the stable and unstable foliations. When the Anosov system is the geodesic flow of a closed Riemannian manifold with pinched negative sectional curvatures, we prove some rigidity properties for the foliated centralizer of the lift of the flow to the universal cover: it is a finite-dimensional Lie group, which is moreover discrete (modulo the action of the flow itself) unless the metric is homothetic to some real hyperbolic metric. This result is inspired by the study of isometries of universal covers that appeared originally in the work of Eberlein, and later in Farb and Weinberger, as well as centralizer rigidity results in dynamics.

Abstract:We investigate the relationship between affine and Stein varieties in the context of rigid geometry. We show that the two concepts are much more closely related than in complex geometry, e.g. they are equivalent for surfaces. This rests on the density of algebraic functions in analytic functions. One key ingredient to prove such a density statement is an extension result for Cartier divisors.

Abstract:The Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) is designed to gather the best and deepest multiwavelength data for studying the formation and evolution of galaxies and active galactic nuclei, the distribution of dark and luminous matter at high redshift, the cosmological parameters from distant supernovae, and the extragalactic background light. The program uses the most powerful space- and ground-based telescopes to cover two fields, each 10'x16', centered on the Hubble Deep Field North and the Chandra Deep Field South, already the sites of extensive observations from X-ray through radio wavelengths. GOODS incorporates 3.6-24 micron observations from a SIRTF Legacy Program, four-band ACS imaging from an HST Treasury Program, and extensive new ground-based imaging and spectroscopy. GOODS data products will be made available on a rapid time-scale, enabling community research on a wide variety of topics. Here we describe the project, emphasizing its application for studying the mass assembly history of galaxies.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a simple classical Lie algebra over $\mathbb{C}$ and $G$ be the adjoint group. Consider a nilpotent element $e\in \mathfrak{g}$, and the adjoint orbit $\mathbb{O}=Ge$. The formal slices to the codimension $2$ orbits in the closure $\overline{\mathbb{O}}\subset \mathfrak{g}$ are well-known due to the work of Kraft and Procesi. In this paper, we prove a similar result for the universal $G$-equivariant cover $\widetilde{\mathbb{O}}$ of $\mathbb{O}$. Namely, we describe the codimension $2$ singularities for its affinization $Spec(\mathbb{C}[\widetilde{\mathbb{O}}])$.

Abstract:Let cc(Rn) denote the hyperspace of all nonempty compact convex subsets of the Euclidean space Rn endowed with the Hausdorff metric, and let cc(Bn)={A∈cc(Rn)|A⊂Bn} , where Bn is the closed unit ball of Rn . Let cb(Rn) be the subset of cc(Rn) consisting of all convex bodies, i.e., of sets A∈cc(Rn) with non-empty interior. In this survey article we reveal fundamental properties of the natural action Aff(n)↷cb(Rn) of the affine group that leads to structure results for cb(Rn) and for several important subsets of it. Orbit spaces of cb(Rn) and its subsets by some appropriate subgroups G are homeomorphic to such important objects like the Hilbert cube or the Banach-Mazur compacta. Among other hyperspaces studied here are cw(Rn) - the hyperspace of convex bodies of constant width, Bp - the hyperspace of convex bodies with smooth boundary of positive Gaussian curvature, L(n) - the hyperspace of convex bodies for which the Euclidean unit ball is the Löwner ellipsoid, cˇ(n) - the hyperspace of convex sets for which the Euclidean unit ball is the Chebyshev ball, etc. The paper contains also several new results concerning equivariant extension properties of the hyperspaces in question, as well as the homeomorphism type of the hyperspace cb(Bn)=cb(Rn)∩cc(Bn) and its orbit spaces. Equivariant extension properties of these hyperspaces are applied to provide a very short proof of the classical Grünbaum Conjecture from Convex Geometry. Along the paper seventeen open problems are raised.
