Abstract:We undertake the study of profinite quandles. We provide several constructions of profinite quandles from profinite groups, and from other profinite quandle. We characterize which subquandles of profinite quandles are again profinite. Finally, we provide a characterization of algebraically connected profinite quandles in terms of the profinite completion of their inner automorphism groups $\widehat{\Inn(Q)}$. It is anticipated that the results herein will find applications to the étale homotopy theory of number fields. v.2 has been updated to include an example due to Ariel Davis settling in the negative the question of whether all Stone topological quandles are profinite.

Abstract:Journal of Algebra and Its Applications, Ahead of Print. The axioms of a quandle imply that the columns of its Cayley table are permutations. This paper studies quandles with exactly one non-trivially permuted column. Their automorphism groups, quandle polynomials, (symmetric) cohomology groups, and [math] quandles are studied. The quiver and cocycle invariant of links using these quandles are shown to relate to linking number.

Abstract:A quandle is an algebraic system originated in knot theory, and can be regarded as a generalization of symmetric spaces. The inner automorphism group of a quandle is defined as the group generated by the point symmetries (right multiplications). In this paper, starting from any simple graphs, we construct quandles whose inner automorphism groups are abelian. We also prove that the constructed quandle is homogeneous if and only if the graph is vertex-transitive. This shows that there is a wide family of quandles with abelian inner automorphism groups, even if we impose the homogeneity. The key examples of such quandles are realized as subquandles of oriented real Grassmannian manifolds.

Abstract:Quandles are right-invertible, right-self distributive (and idempotent) algebraic structures. Therefore, right translations are quandle automorphisms. It has been interesting to look into finite quandles by way of the cycle structures their right translations may have. For each quandle, the list of these cycle structures is known as the profile of the quandle. For a connected quandle, any two right translations are conjugate so there is essentially one cycle structure per connected quandle - which we thus identify with the profile. Hayashi conjectured that, for a connected quandle, each length of its profile divides the longest length. In the present article we introduce Super Hayashi Quandles (SHQ). An SHQ is a finite connected quandle such that any two lengths in its profile are (i) distinct, and (ii) the shorter one divides the longer one. The SHQ's are latin quandles and we prove that their profiles depend only on the second shortest length and on the number of cycles. Furthermore, we prove that SHQ's have SHQ's alone for subquandles (with the same second shortest length but fewer cycles). Finally, we construct infinitely many SHQ's.

Abstract:We extend a construction of Jones to associate $(n, n)$-tangles with elements of Thompson's group $F$ and prove that it is asymptotically faithful as $n \to\infty$. Using this construction we show that the oriented Thompson group $\vec F$ admits a lax group action on a category of Khovanov's chain complexes.

Abstract:We give a complete description of the associated group of any quandle as a central extension of the inner-automorphism group. As an application, we compute the second quandle homology groups of quandles of some families, including those of Alexander quandles.

Abstract:Quandle Coloring Quivers are directed graph-valued invariants of classical and virtual knots and links associated to finite quandles. Quandle action quivers are subquivers of the full quandle coloring quiver associated to quandle actions by elements of the coloring quandle. These quivers provide a categorification of the quandle counting invariant associated to each element of the quandle. We obtain new polynomial invariants called quandle action polynomials from these quivers as decategorifications.

Abstract:We study the poset of hyperbolic structures on Thompson's group $F$ and its generalizations $F_n$ for $n \geq 2$. The global structure of this poset is as simple as one would expect, with the maximal non-elementary elements being two quasi-parabolic actions corresponding to well-known ascending HNN-extension expressions of $F_n$. However, the local structure turns out to be incredibly rich, in stark contrast with the situation for the $T$ and $V$ counterparts. We show that the subposet of quasi-parabolic hyperbolic structures consists of two isomorphic posets, each of which contains uncountably many subposets of \emph{lamplike} structures, which can be described combinatorially in terms of certain hyperbolic structures on related lamplighter groups. Moreover, each of these subposets, as well as intersections and complements thereof, is very large, in that it contains a copy of the power set of the natural numbers. We also prove that these uncountably many uncountable subposets are not the entire picture, indeed there exists a copy of the power set of the natural numbers consisting entirely of non-lamplike structures. We also prove that this entire vast array of hyperbolic structures on $F_n$ collapses as soon as one takes a natural semidirect product with $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. These results are all proved via a detailed analysis of confining subsets, and along the way we establish a number of fundamental results in the theory of confining subsets of groups.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of the power quandle of a group, an algebraic structure that forgets the multiplication but keeps the conjugation and the power maps. Compared with plain quandles, power quandles are much better invariants of groups. We show that they determine the central quotient of any group and the center of any finite group. Any group can be canonically approximated by the associated group of its power quandle, which we show to be a central extension, with a universal property, and a computable kernel. This allows us to present any group as a quotient of a group with a power-conjugation presentation by an abelian subgroup that is determined by the power quandle and low-dimensional homological invariants.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a characterization for homogeneous quandles with commutative inner automorphism groups. In particular, it is shown that such a quandle is expressed as an abelian extension of a trivial quandle. Our construction is a generalization of the recent work by Furuki and Tamaru, which gives the construction of disconnected flat quandles.

Abstract:We introduce a new invariant of fields that refines their real spectrum and is related to their absolute Galois group: the Artin-Schreier quandle. For formally real number fields, it is freely generated in its variety by a Cantor space of indeterminates. For Laurent series fields, we compute it in terms of the Artin-Schreier quandle of the coefficient field. This result and other examples show that, in general, there are relations.

Abstract:We construct the first examples of finitely presented simple groups of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the real line. Our examples are also of type $F_{\infty}$, have infinite geometric dimension, and admit a nontrivial homogeneous quasimorphism (and hence have infinite commutator width).

Abstract:Quandles are certain algebraic structures showing up in different mathematical contexts. A group $G$ with the conjugation operation forms a quandle, $\operatorname{Conj}(G)$. In the opposite direction, one can construct a group $\operatorname{As}(Q)$ starting from any quandle $Q$. These groups are useful in practice, but hard to compute. We explore the group $\operatorname{As}(\operatorname{Conj}(G))$ for so-called $\overline{C}$-groups $G$. These are groups admitting a presentation with only conjugation and power relations. Symmetric groups $S_n$ are typical examples. We show that for $\overline{C}$-groups, $\operatorname{As}(\operatorname{Conj}(G))$ injects into $G \times \mathbb{Z}^m$, where $m$ is the number of conjugacy classes of $G$. From this we deduce information about the torsion, center, and derived group of $\operatorname{As}(\operatorname{Conj}(G))$. As an application, we compute the second quandle homology group of $\operatorname{Conj}(S_n)$ for all $n$, and unveil rich torsion therein.

On the Euler characteristics for quandles

Abstract:A quandle is an algebraic system whose axioms generalize the algebraic structure of the point symmetries of symmetric spaces. In this paper, we give a definition of Euler characteristics for quandles. In particular, the quandle Euler characteristic of a compact connected Riemannian symmetric space coincides with the topological Euler characteristic. Additionally, we calculate the Euler characteristics of some finite quandles, including generalized Alexander quandles, core quandles, discrete spheres, and discrete tori. Furthermore, we prove several properties of quandle Euler characteristics, which suggest that they share similar properties with topological Euler characteristics.

Abstract:This paper summarizes substantive new results derived by a student team (the first three authors) under the direction of the fourth author at the 2005 session of the KSU REU ``Brainstorming and Barnstorming''. The main results are a decomposition theorem for quandles in terms of an operation of `semidisjoint union' showing that all finite quandles canonically decompose via iterated semidisjoint unions into connected subquandles, and a structure theorem for finite connected quandles with prescribe inner automorphism group. The latter theorem suggests a new approach to the classification of finite connected quandles.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate residual finiteness and subquandle separability of quandles. The existence of these finiteness properties implies the solvability of the word problem and the generalised word problem for quandles. We prove that the fundamental $n$-quandle of any link in the 3-sphere is residually finite for each $n \ge 2$. This supplements the recent result on residual finiteness of link quandles and the classification of links whose fundamental $n$-quandles are finite for some $n$. We also establish several general results on these finiteness properties and give many families of quandles admitting them.

Abstract:We describe a procedure for constructing a generalized Thompson group out of a family of groups that is equipped with what we call a cloning system. The previously known Thompson groups F, V, Vbr and Fbr arise from this procedure using, respectively, the systems of trivial groups, symmetric groups, braid groups and pure braid groups. We give new examples of families of groups that admit a cloning system and study how the finiteness properties of the resulting generalized Thompson group depend on those of the original groups. The main new examples here include upper triangular matrix groups, mock reflection groups, and loop braid groups. For generalized Thompson groups of upper triangular matrix groups over rings of S-integers of global function fields, we develop new methods for (dis-)proving finiteness properties, and show that the finiteness length of the generalized Thompson group is exactly the limit inferior of the finiteness lengths of the groups in the family.

Abstract:Joyce has shown that the fundamental quandle of a classical knot can be derived from consideration of the fundamental group and the peripheral structure of the knot, and also that the group and much of the peripheral structure can be recovered from the quandle. We generalize these results to arbitrary dimensions, and also to virtual and welded knots and arcs.

Abstract:A quandle is an algebraic structure whose binary operation is idempotent, right-invertible and right self-distributive. Right-invertibility ensures right translations are permutations and right self-distributivity ensures further they are automorphisms. For finite connected quandles, all right translations have the same cycle structure, called the profile of the connected quandle. Hayashi conjectured that the longest length in the profile of a finite connected quandle is a multiple of the remaining lengths. We prove that this conjecture is true for profiles with at most five lengths.
