Abstract:The Spectre is an aperiodic monotile for the Euclidean plane that is truly chiral in the sense that it tiles the plane without any need for a reflected tile. The topological and dynamical properties of the Spectre tilings are very similar to those of the Hat tilings. Specifically, the Spectre sits within a complex $2$-dimensional family of tilings, most of which involve two shapes rather than one. All tilings in the family give topologically conjugate dynamics, up to an overall rescaling and rotation. They all have pure point dynamical spectrum with continuous eigenfunctions and may be obtained from a $4:2$ dimensional cut-and-project scheme with regular windows of Rauzy fractal type. The diffraction measure of any Spectre tiling is pure point as well. For fixed scale and orientation, varying the shapes is MLD equivalent to merely varying the projection direction. These properties all follow from the first Čech cohomology being as small as it possibly could be, leaving no room for shape changes that alter the dynamics.

Abstract:As a toy model of chiral interactions in crowded spaces, we consider sphinx tilings in finite regions of the triangular lattice. The sphinx tiles, hexiamonds composed of six equilateral triangles in the shape of a stylized sphinx, come in left and right enantiomorphs. Regions scaled up from the unit sphinx by an integer factor ("Sphinx frames") require tiles of both chiral forms to produce tilings, including crystalline, quasicrystalline, and fully disordered tilings. For frames up to order 13, we describe methods that permit exact enumeration and computation of partition functions using "accelerated backtracking," "seam," and "dangler" algorithms. For larger frames, we introduce a Monte Carlo (MC) method to sample typical tilings. Key to the latter is the identification of fundamental shapes (polyads) that admit multiple tilings and which allow a rejection-free MC simulation.

Abstract:The hexagonal tiling honeycomb is a beautiful structure in 3-dimensional hyperbolic space. It is called {6,3,3} because each hexagon has 6 edges, 3 hexagons meet at each vertex in a Euclidean plane tiled by regular hexagons, and 3 such planes meet along each edge of this honeycomb. It also appears naturally in algebraic geometry. If $\mathbb{E}$ denotes the Eisenstein integers, the Néron-Severi group of the abelian surface $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{E}^2$ is isomorphic to the lattice $\mathfrak{h}_2(\mathbb{E})$ consisting of $2 \times 2$ hermitian matrices with Eisenstein integer entries. The points $A \in \mathfrak{h}_2(\mathbb{E})$ with $\mathrm{tr}(A) \gt 0$ and $\det(A) \gt 0$ come from ample line bundles on $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{E}^2$, and among these points, those with $\det(A) = 1$ correspond to principal polarizations. But these points are precisely the centers of the hexagons in the hexagonal tiling honeycomb!

Abstract:The recently discovered "hat" aperiodic monotile mixes unreflected and reflected tiles in every tiling it admits, leaving open the question of whether a single shape can tile aperiodically using translations and rotations alone. We show that a close relative of the hat -- the equilateral member of the continuum to which it belongs -- is a weakly chiral aperiodic monotile: it admits only non-periodic tilings if we forbid reflections by fiat. Furthermore, by modifying this polygon's edges we obtain a family of shapes called Spectres that are strictly chiral aperiodic monotiles: they admit only chiral non-periodic tilings based on a hierarchical substitution system.

Abstract:Penrose tilings are the most famous aperiodic tilings, and they have been studied extensively. In particular, patterns composed with hexagons (H), boats (B) and stars (S) were soon exhibited and many physicists published on what they later called HBS tilings, but no article or book combines all we know about them. This work is done here, before introducing new decorations and properties including explicit substitutions. For the latter, the star comes in three versions so we have 5 prototiles in what we call the Star tileset. Yet this set yields exactly the strict HBS tilings formed using 3 tiles decorated with either the usual decorations (arrows) or Ammann bar markings for instance. Another new tileset called Gemstones is also presented, derived from the Star tileset.

Abstract:The diffraction pattern from the recently reported aperiodic ` einstein ', or `hat', monohedral tiling [Smith et al. (2023). arXiv:2303.10798v1] has been analyzed. The structure is the hexagonal mta net, a kite tiling, with aperiodic vertex deletions. A large model's diffraction pattern displays a robust sixfold periodicity in plane group p 6. A repeating, roughly triangular motif of `diffused intensity' arises between the strongest Bragg peaks. The motif contains high-density regions of discrete `satellite' peaks, rather than continuous `diffuse scattering', breaking mirror symmetry, consistent with the chiral hat tiling.

Hexagonal quasiperiodic tilings as decorations of periodic lattices

Abstract:Symmetry sharing facilitates coherent interfaces which can transition from periodic to quasiperiodic structures. Motivated by the design and construction of such systems, we present hexagonal quasiperiodic tilings with a single edge-length which can be considered as decorations of a periodic lattice. We introduce these tilings by modifying an existing family of golden-mean trigonal and hexagonal tilings, and discuss their properties in terms of this wider family. Then, we show how the vertices of these new systems can be considered as decorations or sublattice sets of a periodic triangular lattice. We conclude by simulating a simple Ising model on one of these decorations, and compare this system to a triangular lattice with random defects.

Abstract:The decades-long search for a shape that tiles the plane only aperiodically under translations and rotations recently ended with the discovery of the `spectre' aperiodic monotile. In this setting we study the dimer model, in which dimers are placed along tile edges such that each vertex meets precisely one dimer. The complexity of the tiling combines with the dimer constraint to allow an exact solution to the model. The partition function is $\mathcal{Z}=2^{N_{\textrm{Mystic}}+1}$ where $N_{\textrm{Mystic}}$ is the number of `Mystic' tiles. We exactly solve the quantum dimer (Rokhsar Kivelson) model in the same setting by identifying an eigenbasis at all interaction strengths $V/t$. We find that test monomers, once created, can be infinitely separated at zero energy cost for all $V/t$, constituting a deconfined phase in a 2+1D bipartite quantum dimer model.

Abstract:Proctor's work on staircase plane partitions yields an enumeration of lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon on the triangular lattice. Rohatgi recently extended this tiling enumeration to a halved hexagon with a triangle removed from the boundary. In this paper we prove a generalization of the results of Proctor and Rohatgi by enumerating lozenge tilings of a halved hexagon in which an array of adjacent triangles has been removed from the boundary.

Abstract:Exploring nonminimal-rank quasicrystals, which have symmetries that can be found in both periodic and aperiodic crystals, often provides new insight into the physical nature of aperiodic long-range order in models that are easier to treat. Motivated by the prevalence of experimental systems exhibiting aperiodic long-range order with hexagonal and trigonal symmetry, we introduce a generic two-parameter family of 2-dimensional quasiperiodic tilings with such symmetries. We focus on the special case of trigonal and hexagonal Fibonacci, or golden-mean, tilings, analogous to the well studied square Fibonacci tiling. We first generate the tilings using a generalized version of de Bruijn's dual grid method. We then discuss their interpretation in terms of projections of a hypercubic lattice from six dimensional superspace. We conclude by concentrating on two of the hexagonal members of the family, and examining a few of their properties more closely, while providing a set of substitution rules for their generation.

Here we study a two-parameter family of roughly hexagonal regions in the hexagonal grid and show that a tiling by tribones exists if and only if the two parameters associated with the region are the paired pentagonal numbers $k(3k \pm 1)/2$.

Abstract:In 1966, Zalgaller completed the task of determining all edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by regular spherical polygons, proving that the only possibilities are the Platonic tilings, the Archimedean tilings, the Johnson tilings, the prism and anti-prism tilings and two tiles sharing their boundaries. We determine all non-edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by regular spherical polygons of three or more sides, showing there are five continuous families of kaleidoscope tilings, fifteen continuous families of 2-hemisphere tilings, four lunar tilings, five sporadic tilings, five composed tilings and one magic triangle tiling.

Abstract:We study a family of substitution tilings with similar right triangles of two sizes which is obtained using the substitution rule introduced in [Danzer, L. and van Ophuysen, G. A species of planar triangular tilings with inflation factor $\sqrt{-\tau}$. Res. Bull. Panjab Univ. Sci. 2000, 50, 1-4, pp. 137--175 (2001)]. In that paper, it is proved this family of tilings can be obtained from a local rule using decorated tiles. That is, that this family is \emph{sofic}. In the present paper, we provide an alternative proof of this fact. We use more decorated tiles than Danzer and van Ophuysen (22 in place of 10). However, our decoration of supertiles is more intuitive and our local rule is simpler.

Abstract:Square-triangle-rhombus ($\mathcal{STR}$) tilings are encountered in various self-organized multi-component systems. They exhibit a rich structural diversity, encompassing both periodic tilings and long-range ordered quasicrystals, depending on the proportions of the three tiles and their orientation distributions. We derive a general scheme for characterizing $\mathcal{STR}$ tilings based on their lift into a four-dimensional hyperspace. In this approach, the average hyperslope ($2 \times 2$) matrix $\mathcal{H}$ of a patch defines its global composition with four real coefficients: $\mathcal{X}$, $\mathcal{Y}$, $\mathcal{Z}$, and $\mathcal{W}$. The matrix $\mathcal{H}$ can be computed either directly from the area-weighted average of the hyperslopes of individual tiles or indirectly from the border of the patch alone. The coefficient $\mathcal{W}$ plays a special role as it depends solely on the rhombus tiles and encapsulates a topological charge, which remains invariant upon local reconstructions in the tiling. For instance, a square can transform into a pair of rhombuses with opposite topological charges, giving rise to local modes with five degrees of freedom. We exemplify this classification scheme for $\mathcal{STR}$ tilings through its application to experimental structures observed in two-dimensional Ba-Ti-O films on metal substrates, demonstrating the hyperslope matrix $\mathcal{H}$ as a precise tool for structural analysis and characterization.

Abstract:A brief history of planar aperiodic tile sets is presented, starting from the Domino Problem proposed by Hao Wang in 1961. We provide highlights that led to the discovery of the Taylor--Socolar aperiodic monotile in 2010 and the Hat and Spectre aperiodic monotiles in 2023. The Spectre tile is an amazingly simple monotile; a single tile whose translated and rotated copies tile the plane but only in a way that lacks any translational periodicity. We showcase this breakthrough discovery through the 60$+$ years that aperiodic tile sets have been considered.

Abstract:The amplituhedron is a mathematical object which was introduced to provide a geometric origin of scattering amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang Mills theory. It generalizes \emph{cyclic polytopes} and the \emph{positive Grassmannian}, and has a very rich combinatorics with connections to cluster algebras. In this article we provide a series of results about tiles and tilings of the $m=4$ amplituhedron. Firstly, we provide a full characterization of facets of BCFW tiles in terms of cluster variables for $\mbox{Gr}_{4,n}$. Secondly, we exhibit a tiling of the $m=4$ amplituhedron which involves a tile which does not come from the BCFW recurrence -- the \emph{spurion} tile, which also satisfies all cluster properties. Finally, strengthening the connection with cluster algebras, we show that each standard BCFW tile is the positive part of a cluster variety, which allows us to compute the canonical form of each such tile explicitly in terms of cluster variables for $\mbox{Gr}_{4,n}$. This paper is a companion to our previous paper ``Cluster algebras and tilings for the $m=4$ amplituhedron''.
