Abstract:Active polymers possess numerous unique properties that are quite different from those observed in the system of small active molecule due to the intricate interplay between their activity and topological constraints. This study focuses on the conformational changes induced by activity, impacting effective stiffness and crucially influencing entanglement and dynamics. When the two terminals of a linear chain undergo active modification through coupling to a high-temperature thermal bath, there is a substantial increase in chain size, indicating a notable enhancement in effective stiffness. Unlike in passive semiflexible chains where stiffness predominantly affects local bond angles, activity-induced stiffness manifests at the scale of tens of monomers. While activity raises the ambient temperature, it significantly decreases diffusion by over an order of magnitude. The slowdown of dynamics observed can be attributed to increased entanglement due to chain elongation.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve The paper "Research on Activity - Induced Stiffness, Entangled Networks and Kinetic Slowing - down in Unentangled Semidilute Polymer Solutions" aims to explore the conformational changes, entangled networks and kinetic behaviors of active polymers in unentangled semidilute solutions. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following issues: 1. **The influence of the introduction of active monomers on the conformation of polymer chains**: - How do active monomers change the effective stiffness of polymer chains? - How does the position of active monomers affect the degree of chain expansion? 2. **The influence of activity modification on effective entanglements in unentangled semidilute solutions**: - Can activity modification induce effective entanglements in unentangled polymer solutions? - How does such entanglement affect the kinetic behavior of polymers? 3. **The influence of activity on the kinetics of polymer chains**: - Does the introduction of active monomers consistently enhance or slow down the diffusion of polymer chains? - What are the reasons for kinetic slowing - down? Is it related to chain expansion and entanglement? ### Main findings 1. **Activity - induced chain expansion**: - When the two ends of a linear chain are actively modified and coupled to a high - temperature heat bath, the size of the chain increases significantly, indicating that the effective stiffness is significantly enhanced. - Activity - induced stiffness is mainly manifested as changes on the scale of dozens of monomers, not just local bond - angle changes. 2. **Kinetic slowing - down**: - Although the activity increases the environmental temperature, the diffusion coefficient decreases significantly, by more than an order of magnitude. - Kinetic slowing - down can be attributed to the increase in entanglement caused by chain expansion. 3. **Formation of entangled networks**: - The introduction of active monomers induces effective entanglements in unentangled semidilute solutions, leading to significant changes in kinetic behavior. - Through Primitive Path Analysis (PP), it is found that the average number of entanglements of active polymers increases significantly with the increase in activity difference. 4. **Activity modification at different positions**: - The distribution of active monomers at different positions on the chain has a significant impact on the size, kinetics and entanglement of the chain. - Uniformly distributed active monomers result in shorter chain sizes, while active monomers at the chain ends result in longer chain sizes and a higher number of entanglements. ### Conclusion This study reveals the multiple effects of active monomers in unentangled semidilute polymer solutions, including conformational changes, an increase in effective stiffness, the formation of entangled networks and significant changes in kinetic behavior. These findings are of great significance for understanding the dynamic organization and function of chromatin in cells and provide a theoretical basis for the design of new active materials.
