Abstract:We investigate the cosmological first-order chiral phase transition of QCD, and for the first time calculate its parameters which can fully determine the gravitational wave spectrum. With the state-of-the-art calculation from the functional QCD method, we found that the large chemical potential of QCD phase transition results in very weak and fast first-order phase transitions at the temperature lower than $\mathcal{O}(10^2)$ MeV. These results further suggest that the GW signals of NANOGrav are very unlikely sourced from the chiral phase transition of QCD.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to determine whether the chiral phase transition in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) can be the source of the nano - hertz gravitational - wave background (SGWB) signal. Specifically, the authors, through the first quantitative analysis of the parameters of the QCD chiral phase transition, explored how these parameters fully determine the gravitational - wave spectrum, and evaluated whether these signals are consistent with the data observed by the NANOGrav experiment. The study found that at temperatures below \(O(10^{2})\) MeV, due to the large chemical potential of quark matter, the QCD phase transition leads to a very weak and rapid first - order phase transition, which makes it extremely unlikely that the signal observed by NANOGrav is sourced from the QCD chiral phase transition. In addition, the study also shows that this phase transition is too weak to generate gravitational - wave signals detectable by current and under - construction gravitational - wave detectors in the nano - hertz to hertz frequency range.
