Abstract:In this paper we give an explicit solution to Zariski's moduli problem for plane branches. We compute (in an algorithmic way) the set of Kähler differentials of an irreducible germ of holomorphic plane curve. We show that there is a basis of this set whose main elements correspond to dicritical foliations. Indeed, we discuss several concepts of generation for the semimodule of values of Kähler differentials of the curve and provide basis of Kähler differentials, for every of these concepts, whose geometric properties are described. Moreover, we give an algorithmic construction of the bases.

Abstract:Given a germ of a smooth plane curve $(\{f(x,y)=0\},0)\subset (\mathbb K^2,0), \mathbb K=\mathbb R, \mathbb C$, with an isolated singularity, we define two invariants $I_f$ and $V_f\in \mathbb N\cup\{\infty\}$ which count the number of inflections and vertices (suitably interpreted in the complex case) concentrated at the singular point; the first is an affine invariant and the second is invariant under similarities of $\mathbb R^2$, and their analogue for $\mathbb C^2$. We show that for almost all representations of $f$, in the sense that their complement is of infinite codimension, these invariants are finite. Indeed when the curve has no smooth components they are always finite and bounded and we can be much more explicit about the values they can attain; the set of possible values is of course an analytic invariant of $f$. We illustrate our results by computing these invariants for Arnold's $\mathcal K$-simple singularities as well as singularities that have ${\mathcal A}$-simple parametrisations. We also obtain a relationship between these invariants, the Milnor number of $f$ and the contact of the curve germ with its osculating circle.

On Zariski multiplicity conjecture for quasihomogeneous surfaces with non-isolated singularities

Abstract:We consider a finitely determined map germ $f$ from $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$ to $(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$. In this case, the double point curve $D(f)$ plays a fundamental role in studying the topology of the image of $f$. When $f$ is quasihomogeneous and has corank $1$, we present a characterization of the fold components of the double point curve $D(f)$. In our setting, we also consider Zariski multiplicity question for a pair of germs of (parametrized) quasihomogeneous surfaces $(\textbf{X},0)$ and $(\textbf{Y},0)$ in $(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$ with one dimensional singular set. Finally, we characterize Whitney equisingularity of an unfolding $\mathcal{F} =(f_t,t)$ of $f$ through the constancy of the Milnor number of a single plane curve in the source. This gives in some sense an answer to a question by Ruas in $1994$.

Abstract:We show that the isolated invariant branches globalize to algebraic curves, when we consider weak toric type complex hyperbolic foliations on projective toric ambient surfaces. To do it, we pass through a characterization of weak toric type foliations in terms of "non-degeneracy" conditions, associated to Newton polygons. We also give a description of the relationship between invariant algebraic curves and isolated invariant branches, valid for the case of toric type, by means of the following dichotomy. Either there is a rational first integral and there are no isolated invariant branches or we have only finitely many global invariant curves, all of them extending isolated invariant branches.

Abstract:Zariski geometries were introduced by Hrushovski and Zilber in [HrZi 96], [HrZi 93] and [Zil]. From a technical point of view this work provides a class of strongly minimal sets where Zilber’s conjecture holds (see [Zie, end of section 5]. It also provides the answer to two metamathematical questions. How do you characterize the topological spaces that arise from the Zariski topology of an algebraic curve? Can you recover the field from the topological spaces? The answer to these questions is provided by Theorem 3.3 below. This result plays a key role in Hrushovski’s proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture for function fields.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue the study of the embedded topology of plane algebraic curves. We study the realization space of conic line arrangements of degree $7$ with certain fixed combinatorics and determine the number of connected components. This is done by showing the existence of a Zariski pair having these combinatorics, which we identified as a $\pi_1$-equivalent Zariski pair.

Abstract:This is the first part of our work on Zariski decomposition structures, where we study Zariski decompositions using Legendre–Fenchel type transforms. In this way we define a Zariski decomposition for curve classes. This decomposition enables us to develop the theory of the volume function for curves defined by the second named author, yielding some fundamental positivity results for curve classes. For varieties with special structures, the Zariski decomposition for curve classes admits an interesting geometric interpretation.
On the topological classification of complex plane curve singularities

Abstract:This final degree project is devoted to study the topological classification of complex plane curves. These are subsets of $\mathbb{C}^2$ that can be described by an equation $f(x,y)=0$. Loosely speaking, curves are said to be equivalent in a topological sense whenever they are ambient homeomorphic, i.e., there exists an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the ambient space carrying one curve to the other. The project's aim is to develop operative and clear conditions to determine whether two curves are equivalent. Curves will be shown to be decomposable into branches: sets that can be explicitly parametrised in the form $x=\phi(t), y=\psi(t)$. These parametric expressions will be analysed to extract a complete numerical invariant for the classification of branches: the Puiseux characteristic. The intermediate key result to lend this notion with topological weight is that a branch can be completely described through its associated knot, arising from the intersection of the branch with a small enough 3-sphere. The combination of these above-mentioned facts will then culminate in the project's most powerful result, which assures that two curves are equivalent if and only if their branches share the same Puiseux characteristics and intersection numbers.

Abstract:We prove the finiteness of the number of blow-analytic equivalence classes of embedded plane curve germs for any fixed number of branches and for any fixed value of $\mu'$ ---a combinatorial invariant coming from the dual graphs of good resolutions of embedded plane curve singularities. In order to do so, we develop the concept of standard form of a dual graph. We show that, fixed $\mu'$ in $\mathbb{N}$, there are only a finite number of standard forms, and to each one of them correspond a finite number of blow-analytic equivalence classes. In the tribranched case, we are able to give an explicit upper bound to the number of graph standard forms. For $\mu'\leq 2$, we also provide a complete list of standard forms.

Abstract:In this work we describe dicritical foliations in $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$ at a triple point of the resolution dual graph of an analytic plane branch $\mathcal{C}$ using its semiroots. In particular, we obtain a constructive method to present a one-parameter family $\mathcal{C}_{u}$ of separatrices for such foliations. As a by-product we relate the contact order between a special member of $\mathcal{C}_{u}$ and $\mathcal{C}$ with analytic discrete invariants of plane branches.

Abstract:In 2011, Hefez and Hernandes completed Zariski's analytic classification of plane branches belonging to a certain equisingularity class by creating "very short" parameterizations over the complex numbers. Their results were used by Mehmood and Pfister to classify unimodal plane branches in characteristic 0 by constructing lists of normal forms. The goal of this paper is to give a complete classification of unimodal plane branches over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Since the methods of Hefez and Hernandes are not applicable in positive characteristic, we use a different approach and, for some sporadic singularities in small characteristic, computations with SINGULAR. Our methods are characteristic-independent and provide a different proof for the classification in characteristic 0, showing at the same time that this classification holds also in large characteristic. The main theoretical ingredients are the semicontinuity of the semigroup and the modality, which we prove.

Abstract:Abstract We study in this article three birational invariants of projective hyper-Kähler manifolds: the degree of irrationality, the fibering gonality, and the fibering genus. We first improve the lower bound in a recent result of Voisin saying that the fibering genus of a Mumford–Tate very general projective hyper-Kähler manifold is bounded from below by a constant depending on its dimension and the second Betti number. We also study the relations between these birational invariants for projective $K3$ surfaces of Picard number $1$ and study the asymptotic behaviors of their degree of irrationality and fibering genus.

Abstract:The main goal of this article is to expand the theory of invariants of Artin-Schreier curves by giving a complete classification in genus 3 and 4. To achieve this goal, we first establish standard forms of Artin-Schreier curves and determine all isomorphisms between curves in this form. We then compute reconstructing systems of invariants for curves in each connected component of the strata of the moduli spaces for Artin-Schreier curves of genus 3 and 4 for $p>2$.

Constraints on embedded spheres and real projective planes in 4-manifolds from Seiberg-Witten theory

Abstract:We calculate the Seiberg-Witten invariants of branched covers of prime degree, where the branch locus consists of embedded spheres. Aside from the formula itself, our calculations give rise to some new constraints on configurations of embedded spheres in 4-manifolds. Using similar methods, we also obtain new constraints on embeddings of real projective planes and spheres with a cusp singularity. Moreover, we show that the existence of certain configurations of surfaces would give rise to 4-manifolds of non-simple type. Our proof makes use of equivariant Seiberg-Witten invariants as well as a gluing formula for the relative Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds with positive scalar curvature boundary.

Abstract:We prove that the set of `low rank' points on sufficiently large fibre powers of families of curves are not Zariski dense. The recent work of Dimitrov-Gao-Habegger and Kühne (and Yuan) imply the existence of a bound which is exponential in the rank, and the Zilber-Pink conjecture implies a bound which is linear in the rank. Our main result is a (slightly weaker) linear bound for `low ranks'. We also prove analogous results for isotrivial families (with relaxed conditions on the rank) and for solutions to the $S$-unit equation, where the bounds are now sub-exponential in the rank. Our proof involves a notion of the Chabauty-Coleman(-Kim) method in families (or, in some sense, for simply connected varieties). For Zariski non-density, we use the recent work of Blàzquez-Sanz, Casale, Freitag and Nagloo on Ax-Schanuel theorems for foliations on principal bundles.
