Abstract:Since Kurt G(o|¨)del and Paul Cohen showed that the Continuum Hypothesis was independent to the axiomatic system of set theory ZFC,there was a lasting debate between Formalism and Platonism on the continuum problem.In this paper,we try to argue that recent progress about the CH made by Hugh Woodin is a great support to the point view of Platonism.On the other hand,we treat these progress as a work under the G(o|¨)del's Program,hence,as a philosophical point of view,Platonism is also a driving force for the more and more deeply understanding of the universe of sets.

Abstract:One of the main difficulty concerning the nature of the continuum is to do justice, inside the set theoretical Cantorian framework, to the classical conception (from Aristotle to Thom, via Kant, Peirce, Brentano, Husserl and Weyl) according to which the continuum is a non-compositional, cohesive, primitive, and intuitive datum. This paper investigates such possibilities, from G\"{o}del to Woodin, of modelling inside a ZFC-universe the transcendence of the intuitive continuum w.r.t. its symbolic determination. Abstract:The problem of how mathematics and physics are related at a foundational level is of much interest. One approach is to work towards a coherent theory of physics and mathematics together. Here steps are taken in this direction by first examining the theory experiment connection. The role of an implied theory hierarchy and use of computers in comparing theory and experiment is described. The main idea of the paper is to tighten the theory experiment connection by bringing physical theories, as mathematical structures over C, the complex numbers, closer to what is actually done in experimental measurements and computations. The method replaces C by C_{n} which is the set of pairs, R_{n},I_{n}, of n figure rational numbers in some basis. The properties of these numbers are based on the type of numbers that represent measurement outcomes for continuous variables. A model of space and time based on R_{n} is discussed. The model is scale invariant with regions of constant step size interrupted by exponential jumps. A method of taking the limit n to infinity to obtain locally flat continuum based space and time is outlined. Possibly the most interesting result is that R_{n} based space is invariant under scale transformations which correspond to expansion and contraction of space relative to a flat background. Also the location of the origin, which is a space and time singularity, does not change under these transformations. Some properties of quantum mechanics based on C_{n} and on R_{n} space are briefly investigated.

Abstract:Hilary Putnam once suggested that "the actual existence of sets as 'intangible objects' suffers... from a generalization of a problem first pointed out by Paul Benacerraf... are sets a kind of function or are functions a sort of set?" Sadly, he did not elaborate; my aim, here, is to do so on his behalf. There are well-known methods for treating sets as functions and functions as sets. But these do not raise any obvious philosophical or foundational puzzles. For that, we first need to provide a full-fledged function theory. I supply such a theory: it axiomatizes the iterative notion of function in exactly the same sense that ZF axiomatizes the iterative notion of set. Indeed, this function theory is synonymous with ZF. It might seem that set theory and function theory present us with rival foundations for mathematics, since they postulate different ontologies. But appearances are deceptive. Set theory and function theory provide the very same judicial foundation for mathematics. They do not supply rival metaphysical foundations; indeed, if they supply metaphysical foundations at all, then they supply the very same metaphysical foundations.

Abstract:Gödel proved in the 1930s in his famous Incompleteness Theorems that not all statements in mathematics can be proven or disproven from the accepted ZFC axioms. A few years later he showed the celebrated result that Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis is consistent. Afterwards, Gödel raised the question whether, despite the fact that there is no reasonable axiomatic framework for all mathematical statements, natural statements, such as Cantor's Continuum Hypothesis, can be decided via extending ZFC by large cardinal axioms. While this question has been answered negatively, the problem of finding good axioms that decide natural mathematical statements remains open. There is a compelling candidate for an axiom that could solve Gödel's problem: V = Ultimate-L. In addition, due to recent results the Sealing scenario has gained a lot of attention. We describe these candidates as well as their impact and relationship.

Abstract:Despite some discomfort with this grandly philosophical topic, I do in fact hope to address a venerable pair of philosophical chestnuts: mathematical truth and existence. My plan is to set out three possible stands on these issues, for an exercise in compare and contrast. A word of warning, though, to philosophical purists (and perhaps of comfort to more mathematical readers): I will explore these philosophical positions with an eye to their interconnections with some concrete issues of set theoretic method. Let me begin with a brief look at what to count as ‘philosophy’. To some extent, this is a matter of usage, and mathematicians sometimes classify as ‘philosophical’ any considerations other than outright proofs. So, for example, discussions of the propriety of particular mathematical methods would fall under this heading: should we prefer analytic or synthetic approaches in geometry? Should elliptic functions be treated in terms of explicit representations (as in Weierstrass) or geometrically (as in Riemann)? Should we allow impredicative definitions? Should we restrict ourselves to a logic without bivalence or the law of the excluded middle? Also included in this category would be the trains of thought that shaped our central concepts: should a function always be defined by a formula? Should a group be required to have an inverse for every element? Should ideal divisors be defined contextually or explicitly, treated computationally or abstractly? In addition, there are more general questions concerning mathematical values, aims and goals: Should we strive for powerful theories or low-risk theories? How much stress should be placed on the fact or promise of physical applications? How important are interconnections between the various branches of mathematics? These philosophical questions of method naturally include several peculiar to set theory: should set theorists focus their efforts on drawing consequences for areas of interest to mathematicians outside mathematical logic? Should exploration of the standard axioms of ZFC be preferred to the exploration and exploitation of new axioms? How should axioms for set theory be chosen? What would a solution to the Continuum Problem look like?

Abstract:The argument of this article is threefold. First, the article argues that from its rise in the sixteenth century to our own time, the advancement of modern physics as mathematical-experimental science has been defined by the invention of new mathematical structures. Second, the article argues that quantum theory, especially following quantum mechanics, gives this thesis a radically new meaning by virtue of the following two features: on the one hand, quantum phenomena are defined as essentially different from those found in all previous physics by purely physical features; and on the other, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory are defined by purely mathematical postulates, which connect them to quantum phenomena strictly in terms of probabilities, without, as in all previous physics, representing or otherwise relating to how these phenomena physically come about. While these two features may appear discordant, if not inconsistent, I argue that they are in accord with each other, at least in certain interpretations (including the one adopted here), designated as "reality without realism", RWR, interpretations. This argument also allows this article to offer a new perspective on a thorny problem of the relationships between continuity and discontinuity in quantum physics. In particular, rather than being concerned only with the discreteness and continuity of quantum objects or phenomena, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory relate their continuous mathematics to the irreducibly discrete quantum phenomena in terms of probabilistic predictions while, at least in RWR interpretations, precluding a representation or even conception of how these phenomena come about. This subject is rarely, if ever, discussed apart from previous work by the present author. It is, however, given a new dimension in this article which introduces, as one of its main contributions, a new principle: the mathematical complexity principle.

The Axiomatic-Deductive Ideal in Early Modern Thinking: A Cognitive History of Human Rationality

Abstract:Euclid completed his geometrical proofs in the Elements (c. 300BC) with the abbreviation “QED” (quod erat demonstrandum). This phrase was not only used in mathematics in the early modern period, but also in deductive proofs in physics, astronomy, philosophy, and ethics. This chapter is a cognitive- historical interpretation of the axiomatic-deductive ideal that consists of some widely accepted propositions or statements about geometry and mathematics: i) Mathematics is objective, its truths are universal, absolutely certain; it is abstract and independent of the human body, and transcends the reality of human beings; ii) Mathematics’ efficiency as a scientific tool leads to the assumption that it exists in the physical structure of the universe. To learn mathematics was simultaneously to learn the language of nature. It is the scientific ideal; and iii) Mathematics characterizes logic and rational thinking. This axiomatic-deductive ideal could, however, be studied from a cognitive perspective stating that mathematics is created, obviously, by humans, and can be seen as a product of the bio-cultural coevolution of human cognitive abilities. These views of thinking and human rationality expressed, in particular, during the scientific revolution are some of the most beautiful dreams of humanity; the dreams of objectivity, certainty, a transcendental reality independent of human beings, an ideal, reliable method of thinking. The conclusion is that these “inventions” of the human mind, that thinking could be objective, certain, universal, transcendent, abstract, and should form the ideal for science and human thinking, are an important and crucial stepping stone in the history of human rationality which occurred during the scientific revolution from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. In this period of transformation of human rationality, new tools for thinking were invented that have since had a significant impact on human life and cognition.
One Mathematic(s) or Many? Foundations of Mathematics in Today's Mathematical Practice

Abstract:The received Hilbert-style axiomatic foundations of mathematics has been designed by Hilbert and his followers as a tool for meta-theoretical research. Foundations of mathematics of this type fail to satisfactory perform more basic and more practically-oriented functions of theoretical foundations such as verification of mathematical constructions and proofs. Using alternative foundations of mathematics such as the Univalent Foundations is compatible with using the received set-theoretic foundations for meta-mathematical purposes provided the two foundations are mutually interpretable. Changes in foundations of mathematics do not, generally, disqualify mathematical theories based on older foundations but allow for reconstruction of these theories on new foundations. Mathematics is one but its foundations are many.

Abstract:Abstract We provide answers to a question brought up by Erdős about the construction of Wetzel families in the absence of the continuum hypothesis: A Wetzel family is a family of entire functions on the complex plane which pointwise assumes fewer than values. To be more precise, we show that the existence of a Wetzel family is consistent with all possible values of the continuum and, if is regular, also with Martin's Axiom. In the particular case of this answers the main open question asked by Kumar and Shelah [Fund. Math. 239 (2017) no. 3, 279–288]. In the buildup to this result, we are also solving an open question of Zapletal on strongly almost disjoint functions from Zapletal [Israel J. Math. 97 (1997) no. 1, 101–111]. We also study a strongly related notion of sets exhibiting a universality property via mappings by entire functions and show that these consistently exist while the continuum equals .

Abstract:Our assumption that spacetime is a continuum leads to many challenges in mathematical physics. Singularities, divergent integrals and the like threaten many of our favorite theories, from Newtonian gravity to classical electrodynamics, quantum electrodynamics and the Standard Model. In general relativity, singularities are intimately connected to some of the theory's most dramatic successful predictions. We survey these problems and the large amount of work that has gone into dealing with them.

Abstract:This chapter is an attempt to show how mathematical thought has changed in the last two centuries. In fact, with the discovery of the so-called non-Euclidean Geometries, mathematical thinking changed profoundly. With the negation of the postulate for “antonomasia,” that is the uniqueness of the parallel for Euclid, and the construction of a geometric theory equally valid on the logical and coherence plane, called non-Euclidean geometry, the meaning of the word “postulate” or “axiom” changes radically. The axioms of a theory do not necessarily have to be dictated by real evidence. On this basis the constructions of arithmetic and geometry are built. The axiomatic-deductive method becomes the mathematical method. It will also highlight the constant link between mathematics and the reality that surrounds us, which tends to make itself explicit through an artificial, abstract language and with clear and certain grammatical rules. Finally, you will notice the connection with the existing technology, that is the new electronic and digital technology.

Abstract:This paper presents four theorems that connect continuity postulates in mathematical economics to solvability axioms in mathematical psychology, and ranks them under alternative supplementary assumptions. Theorem 1 connects notions of continuity (full, separate, Wold, weak Wold, Archimedean, mixture) with those of solvability (restricted, unrestricted) under the completeness and transitivity of a binary relation. Theorem 2 uses the primitive notion of a separately continuous function to answer the question when an analogous property on a relation is fully continuous. Theorem 3 provides a portmanteau theorem on the equivalence between restricted solvability and various notions of continuity under weak monotonicity. Finally, Theorem 4 presents a variant of Theorem 3 that follows Theorem 1 in dispensing with the dimensionality requirement and in providing partial equivalences between solvability and continuity notions. These theorems are motivated for their potential use in representation theorems.

On foundations for deductive mathematics

Abstract:This article was motivated by the discovery of a potential new foundation for mainstream mathematics. The goals are to clarify the relationships between primitives, foundations, and deductive practice; to understand how to determine what is, or isn't, a foundation; and get clues as to how a foundation can be optimized for effective human use. For this we turn to history and professional practice of the subject. We have no asperations to Philosophy. The first section gives a short abstract discussion, focusing on the significance of consistency. The next briefly describes foundations, explicit and implicit, at a few key periods in mathematical history. We see, for example, that at the primitive level human intuitions are essential, but can be problematic. We also see that traditional axiomatic set theories, Zermillo-Fraenkel-Choice (ZFC) in particular, are not quite consistent with mainstream practice. The final section sketches the proposed new foundation and gives the basic argument that it is uniquely qualified to be considered {the} foundation of mainstream deductive mathematics. The ``coherent limit axiom'' characterizes the new theory among ZFC-like theories. This axiom plays a role in recursion, but is implicitly assumed in mainstream work so does not provide new leverage there. In principle it should settle set-theory questions such as the continuum hypothesis.

Abstract:The article tries to answer the (arguably anachronistic) question whether ancient philosophers and mathematicians held mathematical objects or mathematical truth as a whole to exist. Aristotle being the philosopher who more than anybody else takes up the general question of ‘‘existence” with all its inherent ambiguities, the first and major section analyses what he has to say about mathematical objects being in some sense substances, that is, existing entities. The second section looks at Euclid’s postulates (literally ‘‘requests”), three of which are simply false according to the standard cosmologies of the time. The likely answer of geometricians, actually offered by Cicero, is that these postulates have to be granted if geometry is to be practised – that is, so to speak, that they provide the foundation for what Wittgenstein would call a ‘‘language game”. The last section looks at the question whether mathematics as a whole is a free construction or somehow determined, from the viewpoints of Pythagorean, Platonic and post-Platonic, Aristotelian and other philosophies.
A Generalization of the Cantor-Dedekind Continuum with Nilpotent Infinitesimals

Abstract:We introduce a generalization of the Cantor-Dedekind continuum with explicit infinitesimals. These infinitesimals are used as numbers obeying the same basic rules as the other elements of the generalized continuum, in accordance with Leibniz's original intuition, but with an important difference: their product is null, as the Dutch theologian Bernard Nieuwentijt sustained, against Leibniz's opinion. The starting-point is the concept of shadow, and from it we define indiscernibility (the central concept) and monad. Monads of points have a global-local nature, because in spite of being infinite-dimensional real affine spaces with the same cardinal as the whole generalized continuum, they are closed intervals with length 0. Monads and shadows (initially defined for points) are then extended to any subset of the new continuum, and their study reveals interesting results of preservation in the areas of set theory and topology. All these concepts do not depend on a definition of limit in the new continuum; yet using them we obtain the basic results of the differential calculus. Finally, we give two examples illustrating how the global-local nature of the monad of a real number can be applied to the differential treatment of certain singularities.

Abstract:Recently, in Axioms 10(2): 119 (2021), a nonclassical first-order theory T of sets and functions has been introduced as the collection of axioms we have to accept if we want a foundational theory for (all of) mathematics that is not weaker than ZF, that is finitely axiomatized, and that does not have a countable model (if it has a model at all, that is). Here we prove that T is relatively consistent with ZF. We conclude that this is an important step towards showing that T is an advancement in the foundations of mathematics.
