Abstract:We give several versions of Shintani's method for the decomposition into simplicial cones of the fundamental domain of a torus modulo a lattice, and we investigate some applications to the study of Hecke $L$-functions at integer points. In particular, we prove the analytic class number formula for a totally real field, directly at $s=0$.

Abstract:In this paper we describe a proof of the formulas of Witten [W1], [W2] about the symplectic volumes and the intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of principal bundles on a compact Riemann surface. It is known that these formulas give all the information needed for the Verlinde formula. The main idea of the proof is to use the heat kernel on compact Lie groups, in a way very similar to the heat kernel proof of the Atiyah-Singer index formula and the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula. The Reidemeister torsion comes into the picture, through a beautiful observation of Witten, as the symplectic volume of the moduli space. It plays the role similar to that played by the Ray-Singer torsion in the path-integral computations on the space of connections. The basic idea is as follows. Consider a smooth map between two compact smooth manifolds f : M → N . Let H(t, x, x0) be the heat kernel of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on N with x0 a fixed regular value of f . Abstract:We compute the p-adic L-function (in the sense of Pollack-Stevens and Bellaiche) of the "evil twin" Eisenstein series. We use Solomon's Shintani cocycle to construct a p-adic Shintani modular symbol, and show how to specialize this modular symbol to overconvergent modular symbols with the same p-adic L-function as evil/critical-slope Eisenstein series. This gives a new proof of recent results of Bellaiche and Dasgupta.

Abstract:Shintani's famous invariants conjecturally generate abelian extensions of real quadratic number fields and thus give a conjectural solution to Hilbert's 12th problem. In the present note, we find new expressions for Shintani's invariants by generalising an observation due to Yamamoto who showed that Shintani's invariants, originally expressed in terms of the double sine function, can be written in terms of the q-Pochhammer (or q-Exponential) function.

Abstract:Abstract We formulate and prove a version of the arithmetic Siegel–Weil formula for (zero dimensional) Shimura varieties attached to tori, equipped with some additional data. More precisely, we define a family of “special” divisors in terms of Green functions at archimedean and non-archimedean places and prove that their degrees coincide with the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of an Eisenstein series. The proof relies on the usual Siegel–Weil formula to provide a direct link between both sides of the identity, and in some sense, offers a more conceptual point of view on prior results in the literature.

Convolution monodromy groups and the Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces in tori

Abstract:The Shafarevich conjecture for a class of varieties over a number field posits the finitude of those with good reduction outside a finite set of primes. In the case of hypersurfaces in the torus $\mathbb{G}_m^n$, a natural class to consider are those with a fixed Newton polyhedron that are nondegenerate with respect to it. Using an approach similar to that of Lawrence-Sawin for abelian varieties (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2004.09046" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2004.09046">arXiv:2004.09046</a>), we prove the Shafarevich conjecture for certain classes of Newton polyhedra. In the course of our proof we construct a fiber functor for the Tannakian category of perverse sheaves on the torus in positive characteristic and compute the weights of the Frobenius on it, which leads to the big monodromy results which are key to this method.

Abstract:In recent decades, the use of ideas from Minkowski's Geometry of Numbers has gained recognition as a helpful tool in bounding the number of solutions to modular congruences with variables from short intervals. In 1941, Mahler introduced an analogue to the Geometry of Numbers in function fields over finite fields. Here, we build on Mahler's ideas and develop results useful for bounding the sizes of intersections of lattices and convex bodies in $\mathbb{F}_q((1/T))^d$, which are more precise than what is known over $\mathbb{R}^d$. These results are then applied to various problems regarding bounding the number of solutions to congruences in $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$, such as the number of points on polynomial curves in low dimensional subspaces of finite fields. Our results improve on a number of previous bounds due to Bagshaw, Cilleruelo, Shparlinski and Zumalacárregui. We also present previous techniques developed by various authors for estimating certain energy/point counts in a unified manner.

The Taylor-Wiles method for coherent cohomology, II

Abstract:We show that the Taylor-Wiles method can be applied to the cohomology of a Shimura variety $S$ of PEL type attached to a unitary similitude group $G$, with coefficients in the coherent sheaf attached to an automorphic vector bundle $\CF$ , when $S$ has a smooth model over a $p$-adic integer ring. This generalizes the main results of the article \cite{H13}, which treated the case when $S$ is compact. As in the previous article, the starting point is a theorem of Lan and Suh that proves the vanishing of torsion in the cohomology under certain conditions on the parameters of the bundle $\CF$ and the prime $p$. Most of the additional difficulty in the non-compact case is related to showing that the contributions of boundary cohomology are all of Eisenstein type. We also need to show that the coverings giving rise to the diamond operators can be extended to étale coverings of appropriate toroidal compactifications. The result is applied to show that, when the Taylor-Wiles method applies, the congruence ideal attached to a coherent cohomological realization of an automorphic Galois representation is independent of the signatures of the hermitian form to which $G$ is attached. We also show that the Gorenstein hypothesis used to construct $p$-adic $L$-functions in \cite{EHLS} is valid under rather general hypotheses.

Torsion Vanishing for Some Shimura Varieties

Abstract:We generalize the torsion vanishing results of Caraiani-Scholze and Koshikawa. Our results apply to the cohomology of general Shimura varieties $(\mathbf{G},X)$ of PEL type $A$ or $C$, localized at a suitable maximal ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ in the spherical Hecke algebra at primes $p$ such that $\mathbf{G}_{\mathbb{Q}_{p}}$ is a group for which we know the Fargues-Scholze local Langlands correspondence is the semi-simplification of a suitably nice local Langlands correspondence. This is accomplished by combining Koshikawa's technique, the theory of geometric Eisenstein series over the Fargues-Fontaine curve, the work of Santos describing the structure of the fibers of the minimally and toroidally compactified Hodge-Tate period morphism for general PEL type Shimura varieties of type $A$ or $C$, and ideas developed by Zhang on comparing Hecke correspondences on the moduli stack of $G$-bundles with the cohomology of Shimura varieties. In the process, we also establish a description of the generic part of the cohomology that bears resemblance to the work of Xiao-Zhu. Moreover, we also construct a filtration on the compactly supported cohomology that differs from Manotovan's filtration in the case that the Shimura variety is non-compact, allowing us to circumvent some of the circumlocutions taken by Cariani-Scholze. Our method showcases a very general strategy for proving such torsion vanishing results, and should bear even more fruit once the inputs are generalized. Motivated by this, we formulate an even more general torsion vanishing conjecture.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a Seshadri stratification on an embedded projective variety. Such a structure enables us to construct a Newton-Okounkov simplicial complex and a flat degeneration of the projective variety into a union of toric varieties. We show that the Seshadri stratification provides a geometric setup for a standard monomial theory. In this framework, Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths for Schubert varieties get a geometric interpretation as successive vanishing orders of regular functions.

Abstract:We introduce a method for producing congruences between Hecke eigenclasses, possibly torsion, in the coherent cohomology of automorphic vector bundles on certain good reduction Shimura varieties. The congruences are produced using some "generalized Hasse invariants" adapted to the Ekedahl-Oort stratification of the special fiber.

Tamagawa number conjecture for CM modular forms and Rankin--Selberg convolutions

Abstract:Let $E/F$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ such that the torsion points of $E$ generate over $F$ an abelian extension of $K$. In this paper we prove the $p$-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for $E/F$ in analytic rank $1$ for primes $p>3$ split in $K$. This was previously known for $F=\mathbb{Q}$ by work of Rubin as a consequence of his proof of the Mazur--Swinnerton-Dyer ``main conjecture'' for rational CM elliptic curves, but the problem remained wide open for general $F$. The approach in this paper, based on a novel application of an idea of Bertolini--Darmon--Prasanna to consider a carefully chosen decomposable Rankin--Selberg convolution of two CM modular forms having the Hecke $L$-function of interest as one of the factors, circumvents the use of $p$-adic heights and Bertrand's $p$-adic transcendence results in previous approaches. It also yields a proof of similar results for CM abelian varieties $A/K$, and for CM modular forms of higher weight.

Abstract:As an application of P. Delgine's theorem (Esnault and Kerz in Acta Math. Vietnam. 37:531-562, 2012) on a finiteness of $l$-adic sheaves on a variety over a finite field, we show the finiteness of étale coverings of such a variety with given degree whose ramification bounded along an effective Cartier divisor. This can be thought of a higher dimensional analogue of the classical Hermite-Minkowski theorem.

Abstract:Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field, a finite field or a $p$-adic field. Let $K_0=k((x,y))$ be the field of Laurent series in two variables over $k$. We define Tate-Shafarevich groups of a commutative group scheme over $K_0$ via cohomology classes locally trivial at each completion of $K_0$ coming from a codimension 1 point of $\text{Spec}\; k[[x,y]]$. We establish duality theorems between Tate-Shafarevich groups for finite groups schemes and for tori. We apply these results to the study of the obstruction to the local-global principle for $K_0$-torsors under a connected linear algebraic group, answering in that way a question of Colliot-Thélène, Parimala and Suresh, and to the weak approximation for tori over $K_0$. Abstract:We prove that the mutual energy (or the intersection product in the sense of Arakelov theory) of two dynamical systems associated to Lattès morphisms over $\mathbf{\bar Q}$ is uniformly bounded below and deduce a proof of a conjecture of Bogomolov-Fu-Tschinkel: the number of common images of torsion points of two non-isomorphic elliptic curves over $\mathbf{C}$ by a standard morphism to the projective line is uniformly bounded. The proof crucially relies on the theory of Berkovich spaces over $\mathbf{Z}$ and on an original argument allowing to obtain a global estimate from a central estimate (over a trivially valued field).

Abstract:We employ combinatorial techniques to present an explicit formula for the coefficients in front of Chern classes involving in the Hattori-Stong integrability conditions. We also give an evenness condition for the signature of stably almost-complex manifolds in terms of Chern numbers. As an application, it can be showed that the signature of a $2n$-dimensional stably almost-complex manifold whose possibly nonzero Chern numbers being $c_n$ and $c_ic_{n-i}$ is even, which particularly rules out the existence of such structure on rational projective planes. Some other related results and remarks are also discussed in this article.
