Abstract:We construct the low-frequency formulation of the turbulence characterizing the plasma in a Tokamak edge. Under rather natural assumptions we demonstrate that, even in the presence of poloidal magnetic fluctuations, it is possible to deal with a reduced model for the turbulence dynamics. This model relies on a single equation for the electric potential, from which all the physical turbulent properties can be calculated. The main result of the present analysis concerns the existence of a specific Fourier branch for the dynamics which demonstrate the attractive character of the two-dimensional turbulence with respect to non-axisymmetric fluctuations. The peculiar nature of this instability, affecting the non-axially symmetric modes, is discussed in some detail, by recovering two different physical regimes.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the symmetry problem of electromagnetic turbulence in the plasma of the tokamak edge region. Specifically, the author attempts to explain how three - dimensional turbulence naturally decays into a two - dimensional axisymmetric configuration in the presence of toroidal magnetic fluctuations by constructing a kinetic model of low - frequency turbulence. The key to this process lies in the discovery of a special Fourier branch, which indicates the attractive characteristics of non - axisymmetric modes. The main contribution of the paper is to reveal the special properties of this non - axisymmetric mode instability and to show the manifestations of this instability under different conditions by restoring two different physical mechanisms. ### Main research questions 1. **Low - frequency modeling of electromagnetic turbulence**: The paper first constructs a model describing low - frequency turbulence in the tokamak edge region, with particular attention to the turbulence dynamics in the presence of toroidal magnetic fluctuations. 2. **Derivation of simplified models**: Through a series of reasonable assumptions, the author simplifies the complex multi - fluid model into a single electric potential equation, enabling a clearer analysis of the physical characteristics of the turbulence. 3. **Fourier analysis**: By performing Fourier analysis on the single electric potential equation, the author discovers two different dispersion relation branches, which correspond to the decay behaviors of non - zero and zero real frequencies respectively. 4. **Attractive characteristics of non - axisymmetric modes**: The paper discusses in detail the instability and decay characteristics of non - axisymmetric modes, especially how these modes tend to a two - dimensional axisymmetric configuration in the presence of toroidal magnetic fluctuations. ### Key assumptions and methods - **Negligible background pressure gradient**: It is assumed that the background pressure gradient can be neglected, which is reasonable in an actual tokamak configuration because magnetic shear will naturally suppress the background pressure gradient. - **Negligible ion axial velocity**: It is assumed that the ion axial velocity is negligible compared to the contribution of electrons, which holds in a typical tokamak plasma without spontaneous rotation or neutral beam injection. - **Comparable shear viscosity and particle diffusion coefficient**: It is assumed that the shear viscosity and the particle diffusion coefficient are comparable, which has been considered in many models because the high - order Laplacian operator plays an important role in edge turbulence. ### Main results - **Attractiveness of two - dimensional axisymmetric configuration**: Even in the presence of toroidal magnetic fluctuations, non - axisymmetric modes will naturally decay into a two - dimensional axisymmetric configuration. - **Different decay mechanisms**: Two different decay mechanisms are discovered, corresponding to the decay behaviors of non - zero and zero real frequencies respectively, and these mechanisms are different from those in the pure electrostatic case. - **Significance for large - scale tokamak devices**: These results are of great significance for future large - scale tokamak devices (such as DTT in Italy and ITER), especially when approaching the X - point configuration. Even when the plasma β parameter is large, the turbulence still mainly exhibits two - dimensional spectral characteristics. ### Conclusion By constructing and analyzing a simplified model of low - frequency electromagnetic turbulence, the paper reveals the attractive characteristics and decay mechanisms of non - axisymmetric modes. These findings not only deepen the understanding of turbulence in the tokamak edge region but also provide an important theoretical basis for the design and operation of future large - scale tokamak devices.
