Abstract:We establish a relative version of Gromov's Vanishing Theorem in the presence of amenable open covers with small multiplicity, extending a result of Li, Löh, and Moraschini. Our approach relies on Gromov's theory of multicomplexes.

Abstract:Let $A_L$ be the right-angled Artin group associated to a finite flag complex $L$. We show that the amenable category of $A_L$ equals the virtual cohomological dimension of the right-angled Coxeter group $W_L$. In particular, right-angled Artin groups satisfy a question of Capovilla--Löh--Moraschini proposing an inequality between the amenable category and Farber's topological complexity.

Abstract:We generalize a theorem of Bismut–Zhang, which extends the Cheeger–Müller theorem on Ray–Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case of infinite Galois covering spaces. Our result is stated in the framework of extended cohomology, and generalizes in this case a recent result of Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai. It does not use the determinant class condition and thus also (potentially) generalizes several results on L2-torsions due to Burghelea, Friedlander, Kappeler and McDonald. We combine the framework developed by Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai on the determinant of extended cohomology with the heat kernel method developed in the original paper of Bismut–Zhang to prove our result.

Abstract:We compare relative cohomology theories arising from using different proper resolutions of modules. Criteria for the vanishing of such distinctions are given in certain cases, and we show that this is related to the generalized Tate cohomology theory. We also demonstrate that the two balance properties admitted by the two different cohomology theories are actually equivalent in some cases. As applications, we recover many results obtained earlier in various contexts. At last we investigate derived functors with respect to the Auslander and Bass classes.
Bavard duality for the relative Gromov seminorm

Abstract:The relative Gromov seminorm is a finer invariant than stable commutator length where a relative homology class is fixed. We show a duality result between bounded cohomology and the relative Gromov seminorm, analogously to Bavard duality for scl. We give an application to computations of scl in graphs of groups. We also explain how our duality result can be given a purely algebraic interpretation via a relative version of the Hopf formula. Moreover, we show that this leads to a natural generalisation of a result of Calegari on a connection between scl and the rotation quasimorphism.

Relative bounded cohomology on groups with contracting elements

Abstract:Let $G$ be a countable group acting properly on a metric space with contracting elements and $\{H_i:1\le i\le n\}$ be a finite collection of Morse subgroups in $G$. We prove that each $H_i$ has infinite index in $G$ if and only if the relative second bounded cohomology $H^{2}_b(G, \{H_i\}_{i=1}^n; \mathbb{R})$ is infinite-dimensional. In addition, we also prove that for any contracting element $g$, there exists $k>0$ such that $H^{2}_b(G, \langle \langle g^k\rangle \rangle; \mathbb{R})$ is infinite-dimensional. Our results generalize a theorem of Pagliantini-Rolli for finite-rank free groups and produce some new results on the (relative) second bounded cohomology of groups. Under the same conditions, we also prove a Gap Theorem stating that any $C$-contracting element $g$ in $G$ either has a power which is conjugate to its inverse, or else the stable commutator length of $g$ is at least equal to some constant $\tau=\tau(C)>0$. This generalizes the Gap Theorem obtained by Calegari-Fujiwara for hyperbolic groups and mapping class groups.

An algebraic criterion for the vanishing of bounded cohomology

Abstract:We prove the vanishing of bounded cohomology with separable dual coefficients for many groups of interest in geometry, dynamics, and algebra. These include compactly supported structure-preserving diffeomorphism groups of certain manifolds; the group of interval exchange transformations of the half line; piecewise linear and piecewise projective groups of the line, giving strong answers to questions of Calegari and Navas; direct limit linear groups of relevance in algebraic K-theory, thereby answering a question by Kastenholz and Sroka and a question of two of the authors and Löh; and certain subgroups of big mapping class groups, such as the stable braid group and the stable mapping class group, proving a conjecture of Bowden. Moreover, we prove that in the recently introduced framework of enumerated groups, the generic group has vanishing bounded cohomology with separable dual coefficients. At the heart of our approach is an elementary algebraic criterion called the commuting cyclic conjugates condition that is readily verifiable for the aforementioned large classes of groups.

Abstract:We define two different versions of the relative De Rham cohomology groups of a diffeological space. Additionally, we study a variant of the Mayer-Vietoris sequence and discuss the existence of a relative cup product. Our approach is categorical, replacing open coverings with generating families and unions and intersections with pull-back and join constructions.

Abstract:Motivated by classical Alexander invariants of affine hypersurface complements, we endow certain finite dimensional quotients of the homology of abelian covers of complex algebraic varieties with a canonical and functorial mixed Hodge structure (MHS). More precisely, we focus on covers which arise algebraically in the following way: if $U$ is a smooth connected complex algebraic variety and $G$ is a complex semiabelian variety, the pullback of the exponential map by an algebraic morphism $f:U\to G$ yields a covering space $\pi:U^f\to U$ whose group of deck transformations is $\pi_1(G)$. The new MHSs are compatible with Deligne's MHS on the homology of $U$ through the covering map $\pi$ and satisfy a direct sum decomposition as MHSs into generalized eigenspaces by the action of deck transformations. This provides a vast generalization of the previous results regarding univariable Alexander modules by Geske, Maxim, Wang and the authors. Lastly, we reduce the problem of whether the first Betti number of the Milnor fiber of a central hyperplane arrangement complement is combinatorial to a question about the Hodge filtration of certain MHSs defined in this paper, providing evidence that the new structures contain interesting information.

Abstract:We prove that if a compact $n$-manifold admits a sequence of residual covers that form a coboundary expander in dimension $n-2$, then the manifold has Gromov-hyperbolic fundamental group. In particular, residual sequences of covers of non-hyperbolic compact connected irreducible 3-manifolds are not 1-coboundary expanders.

Abstract:In this paper, via a new Hardy type inequality, we establish some cohomology vanishing theorems for free boundary compact submanifolds M^n with n≥ 2 immersed in the Euclidean unit ball 𝔹^n+k under one of the pinching conditions |Φ |^2≤ C , |A|^2≤C , or |Φ |≤ R(p,|H|) , where A (Φ ) is the (traceless) second fundamental form, H is the mean curvature, C,C are positive constants and R ( p , | H |) is a positive function. In particular, we remove the condition on the flatness of the normal bundle, solving the first question, and partially answer the second question on optimal pinching constants proposed by Cavalcante, Mendes and Vitório.
Homotopy theoretic properties of open books

Abstract:We study the homotopy groups of open books in terms of those of their pages and bindings. Under homotopy theoretic conditions on the monodromy we prove an integral decomposition result for the based loop space on an open book, and under more relaxed conditions prove a rational loop space decomposition. The latter case allows for a rational dichotomy theorem for open books, as an extension of the classical dichotomy in rational homotopy theory. As a direct application, we show that for Milnor's open book decomposition of an odd sphere with monodromy of finite order the induced action of the monodromy on the homology groups of its page cannot be nilpotent.

Maps between Boundaries of Relatively Hyperbolic Groups

Abstract:F. Paulin proved that if the Gromov boundaries of two hyperbolic groups are quasi-Möbius equivalence, then those two hyperbolic groups are quasi-isometric to each other. This article aims to extend Paulin's results to relatively hyperbolic groups by introducing the notion of `relative quasi-Möbius maps' between Bowditch boundaries of relatively hyperbolic groups. A coarsely cusp-preserving quasi-isometry between two relatively hyperbolic groups induces a homeomorphism between their Bowditch boundaries. We will show that the induced homeomorphism is relative quasi-Möbius and linearly distorts the exit points of bi-infinite geodesics to combinatorial horoballs. Conversely, we will show that if a homeomorphism between Bowditch boundaries of two relatively hyperbolic groups, preserving parabolic endpoints, is either relative quasi-Möbius or distorts the exit points of bi-infinite geodesics to combinatorial horoballs linearly, then that homeomorphism induces a coarsely cusp-preserving quasi-isometry between the relatively hyperbolic groups.

Cohomological amplitude for constructible sheaves on moduli spaces of curves

Abstract: We give bounds for the cohomology of constructible sheaves on the moduli stacks M_{g,n} over the complex field. This enables us recover Harer's bound for the virtual cohomological dimension of the associated mapping class groups as well the theorem of Diaz on complete subvarieties of M_g. We also obtain such bounds for any open subset of the Deligne-Mumford compactification of M_{g,n} that is a union of strata. Our proof yields a template for obtaining similar bounds for the cohomological dimension for quasicoherent sheaves on M_{g,n}.

Abstract:We give some conditions on a family of abelian covers of ${\mathbb P}^1$ of genus $g$ curves, that ensure that the family yields a subvariety of ${\mathsf A}_g$ which is not totally geodesic, hence it is not Shimura. As a consequence, we show that for any abelian group $G$, there exists an integer $M$ which only depends on $G$ such that if $g >M$, then the family yields a subvariety of ${\mathsf A}_g$ which is not totally geodesic. We prove then analogous results for families of abelian covers of ${\tilde C}_t \rightarrow {\mathbb P}^1 = {\tilde C}_t/{\tilde G}$ with an abelian Galois group ${\tilde G}$ of even order, proving that under some conditions, if $\sigma \in {\tilde G}$ is an involution, the family of Pryms associated with the covers ${\tilde C}_t \rightarrow C_t= {\tilde C}_t/\langle \sigma \rangle$ yields a subvariety of ${\mathsf A}_{p}^{\delta}$ which is not totally geodesic. As a consequence, we show that if ${\tilde G} =({\mathbb Z}/N{\mathbb Z})^m$ with $N$ even, and $\sigma$ is an involution in ${\tilde G}$, there exists an integer $M(N)$ which only depends on $N$ such that, if ${\tilde g} = g({\tilde C}_t) > M(N)$, then the subvariety of the Prym locus in ${\mathsf A}^{\delta}_{p}$ induced by any such family is not totally geodesic (hence it is not Shimura).

Stability of Homomorphisms, Coverings and Cocycles II: Examples, Applications and Open problems

Abstract:Coboundary expansion (with $\mathbb{F}_2$ coefficients), and variations on it, have been the focus of intensive research in the last two decades. It was used to study random complexes, property testing, and above all Gromov's topological overlapping property. In part I of this paper, we extended the notion of coboundary expansion (and its variations) to cochains with permutation coefficients, equipped with the normalized Hamming distance. We showed that this gives a unified language for studying covering stability of complexes, as well as stability of group homomorphisms -- a topic that drew a lot of attention in recent years. In this part, we extend the theory to the permutation coefficients setting. This gives some new results, even for $\mathbb{F}_2$ coefficients, opens several new directions of research, and suggests a pattern to proving the existence of non-sofic groups. Along the way, we solve the dimension $2$ case of a problem of Gromov, exhibiting a family of bounded degree coboundary expanders with $\mathbb{F}_2$ coefficients.

Vanishing of quaternionic cohomology groups and applications

Abstract:We present solutions to additive and multiplicative Cousin problems formulated on an axially symmetric domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb H$ for slice--regular functions starting from the solutions for subclasses, namely slice--regular slice--preserving functions and functions in a given vectorial class. Consequently, we prove the vanishing of the corresponding cohomology groups with respect to axially symmetric open coverings (Theorems 1.1, 4.1, 4.2). The primary tool used in the proofs of these theorems is the existence of quaternionic Cartan coverings and Cartan's splitting lemmas. As an application, we prove a jet interpolation theorem (Theorem 1.2) and show that every divisor is principal (Theorem 5.1).

Abstract:We study homological invariants of étale groupoids arising from Smale spaces, continuing on our previous work, but going beyond the stably disconnected case by incorporating resolutions in the space direction. We show that the homology groups defined by Putnam are isomorphic to the Crainic-Moerdijk groupoid homology with integer coefficients. We also show that the K-groups of C*-algebras of stable and unstable equivalence relations have finite rank. For unstably disconnected Smale spaces, we provide a cohomological spectral sequence whose second page is the (stable) homology groups, and converges to the K-groups of the unstable C*-algebra.
