Abstract:We introduce an infinite-dimensional version of the Christoffel function, where now (i) its argument lies in a Hilbert space of functions, and (ii) its associated underlying measure is supported on a compact subset of the Hilbert space. We show that it possesses the same crucial property as its finite-dimensional version to identify the support of the measure (and so to detect outliers). Indeed, the growth of its reciprocal with respect to its degree is at least exponential outside the support of the measure and at most polynomial inside. Moreover, for a fixed degree, its computation mimics that of the finite-dimensional case, but now the entries of the moment matrix associated with the measure are moments of moments. To illustrate the potential of this new tool, we consider the following application. Given a data base of registered reference trajectories, we consider the problem of detecting whether a newly acquired trajectory is abnormal (or out of distribution) with respect to the data base. As in the finite-dimensional case, we use the infinite-dimensional Christoffel function as a score function to detect outliers and abnormal trajectories. A few numerical examples are provided to illustrate the theory.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of polyanalytic functions of infinite order. First we study in details the counterpart of the Fock space and related results in this framework. In this case the kernel function is given by $\displaystyle e^{z\overline{w}+\overline{z}w}$ which can be connected to kernels of polyanalytic Fock spaces of finite order. Segal-Bargmann and Berezin type transforms are also considered in this setting. Then, we study the reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of complex-valued functions with reproducing kernel $\displaystyle\frac{1}{(1-z\overline{w})(1-\overline{z}w)}$ and $\displaystyle\frac{1}{1-2{\rm Re}\, z\overline{w}}$. The corresponding backward shift operators are introduced and investigated.

Abstract:In recent years finite tensor products of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHSs) of Gaussian kernels on the one hand and of Hermite spaces on the other hand have been considered in tractability analysis of multivariate problems. In the present paper we study countably infinite tensor products for both types of spaces. We show that the incomplete tensor product in the sense of von Neumann may be identified with an RKHS whose domain is a proper subset of the sequence space $\mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}$. Moreover, we show that each tensor product of spaces of Gaussian kernels having square-summable shape parameters is isometrically isomorphic to a tensor product of Hermite spaces; the corresponding isomorphism is given explicitly, respects point evaluations, and is also an $L^2$-isometry. This result directly transfers to the case of finite tensor products. Furthermore, we provide regularity results for Hermite spaces of functions of a single variable.

A sparsified Christoffel function for high-dimensional inference

Abstract:Christoffel polynomials are classical tools from approximation theory. They can be used to estimate the (compact) support of a measure $\mu$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ based on its low-degree moments. Recently, they have been applied to problems in data science, including outlier detection and support inference. A major downside of Christoffel polynomials in such applications is the fact that, in order to compute their coefficients, one must invert a matrix whose size grows rapidly with the dimension $d$. In this paper, we propose a modification of the Christoffel polynomial which is significantly cheaper to compute, but retains many of its desirable properties. Our approach relies on sparsity of the underlying measure $\mu$, described by a graphical model. The complexity of our modification depends on the treewidth of this model.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for universality limits

Abstract:We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for universality limits for orthogonal polynomials on the real line and related systems. One of our results is that the Christoffel-Darboux kernel has sine kernel asymptotics at a point $\xi$, with regularly varying scaling, if and only if the orthogonality measure (spectral measure) has a unique tangent measure at $\xi$ and that tangent measure is the Lebesgue measure. This includes all prior results with absolutely continuous or singular measures. Our work is not limited to bulk universality; we show that the Christoffel-Darboux kernel has a regularly varying scaling limit with a nontrivial limit kernel if and only if the orthogonality measure has a unique tangent measure at $\xi$ and that tangent measure is not a point mass. The possible limit kernels correspond to homogeneous de Branges spaces; in particular, this equivalence completely characterizes several prominent universality classes such as hard edge universality, Fisher-Hartwig singularities, and jump discontinuities in the weights. The main part of the proof is the derivation of a new homeomorphism. In order to directly apply to the Christoffel-Darboux kernel, this homeomorphism is between measures and chains of de Branges spaces, not between Weyl functions and Hamiltonians. In order to handle limits with power law weights, this homeomorphism goes beyond the more common setting of Poisson-finite measures, and allows arbitrary power bounded measures.

Abstract:We develop a new method to study intersection theory of the main component of the Hilbert scheme of points on complex manifolds. The main result is an iterated residue formula for tautological integrals. We formulate a Chern-Segre-type positivity conjecture for these integrals, and we introduce higher dimensional Segre and Chern integrals.

Abstract:In this paper we study hermitian kernels invariant under the action of a semigroup with involution. We characterize those hermitian kernels which realize the given action by bounded operators on a Krein space. Applications to the GNS representation of *-algebras associated to hermitian functionals are given. We explain the key role played by the Kolmogorov decomposition in the construction of Weyl exponentials associated to an indefinite inner product and in the dilation thoery of hermitian maps on C*-algebras.

Abstract:This work aims to prove that the classical Gaussian kernel, when defined on a non-Euclidean symmetric space, is never positive-definite for any choice of parameter. To achieve this goal, the paper develops new geometric and analytical arguments. These provide a rigorous characterization of the positive-definiteness of the Gaussian kernel, which is complete but for a limited number of scenarios in low dimensions that are treated by numerical computations. Chief among these results are the L$^{\!\scriptscriptstyle p}$-$\hspace{0.02cm}$Godement theorems (where $p = 1,2$), which provide verifiable necessary and sufficient conditions for a kernel defined on a symmetric space of non-compact type to be positive-definite. A celebrated theorem, sometimes called the Bochner-Godement theorem, already gives such conditions and is far more general in its scope, but is especially hard to apply. Beyond the connection with the Gaussian kernel, the new results in this work lay out a blueprint for the study of invariant kernels on symmetric spaces, bringing forth specific harmonic analysis tools that suggest many future applications.

Abstract:This work concerns the construction and characterization of product kernels for multivariate approximation from a finite set of discrete samples. To this end, we consider composing different component kernels, each acting on a low-dimensional Euclidean space. Due to Aronszajn (1950), the product of positive semi-definite kernel functions is again positive semi-definite, where, moreover, the corresponding native space is a particular instance of a tensor product, referred to as Hilbert tensor product. We first analyze the general problem of multivariate interpolation by product kernels. Then, we further investigate the tensor product structure, in particular for grid-like samples. We use this case to show that the product of positive definite kernel functions is again positive definite. Moreover, we develop an efficient computation scheme for the well-known Newton basis. Supporting numerical examples show the good performance of product kernels, especially for their flexibility.

Abstract:Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion and distance covariance are methods to describe independence of random variables using either the Kronecker product of positive definite kernels or the Kronecker product of conditionally negative definite kernels. In this paper we generalize both methods by providing an independence criteria using a new concept, of positive definite independent kernels. We provide a characterization of the radial kernels that are positive definite independent on all Euclidean spaces and we present several examples.

Abstract:In this paper, a finite set of biorthogonal polynomials in two variables is produced using Konhauser polynomials. Some properties containing operational and integral representation, Laplace transform, fractional calculus operators of this family are studied. Also, computing Fourier transform for the new set, a new family of biorthogonal functions are derived via Parseval's identity. On the other hand, this finite set is modified by adding two new parameters in order to have semigroup property and construct fractional calculus operators. Further, integral equation and integral operator are also derived for the modified version.

Abstract:Using some basic properties of the gamma function, we evaluate a simple class of infinite products involving Dirichlet characters as a finite product of gamma functions and, in the case of odd characters, as a finite product of sines. As a consequence we obtain evaluations of certain multiple $L$-series. In the final part of this paper we derive expressions for infinite products of cyclotomic polynomials, again as finite products of gamma or of sine functions.

Abstract:In this paper we present a family of solutions of the Clifford–Helmholtz system, which factors the standard Helmholtz equation. All these solutions can be used as integral kernels of generalized Fourier transforms in hypercomplex analysis. We show that in the Laplace domain they have interesting expressions in terms of terminating hypergeometric functions. This allows us to compute recursion relations between the different kernels. Moreover, we show that it is now possible to compute generating functions of the kernels in different dimensions as well. As a consequence we obtain the generating function of the Clifford–Bessel transform.

Abstract:We study the law of a hypoelliptic Brownian motion on an infinite-dimensional Heisenberg group based on an abstract Wiener space. We show that the endpoint distribution, which can be seen as a heat kernel measure, is absolutely continuous with respect to a certain product of Gaussian and Lebesgue measures, that the heat kernel is quasi-invariant under translation by the Cameron–Martin subgroup, and that the Radon–Nikodym derivative is Malliavin smooth.

Abstract:We introduce and analyse infinite dimensional Wishart processes taking values in the cone $S^+_1(H)$ of positive self-adjoint trace class operators on a separable real Hilbert space $H$. Our main result gives necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence, showing that these processes are necessarily of fixed finite rank almost surely, but they are not confined to a finite-dimensional subspace of $S^+_1(H)$. By providing explicit solutions to operator valued Riccati equations, we prove that their Fourier-Laplace transform is exponentially affine in the initial value. As a corollary, we obtain uniqueness in law as well as the Markov property. We actually show the explicit form of the Fourier-Laplace transform for a wide parameter regime, thereby also extending what is known in the finite-dimensional setting. Finally, under minor conditions on the parameters we prove the Feller property with respect to a slight refinement of the weak-$*$-topology on $S_1^+(H)$. Applications of our results range from tractable infinite-dimensional covariance modelling to the analysis of the limit spectrum of large random matrices.

A Note on Kernel Functions of Dirichlet Spaces

Abstract:For a planar domain $\Omega$, we consider the Dirichlet spaces with respect to a base point $\zeta\in\Omega$ and the corresponding kernel functions. It is not known how these kernel functions behave as we vary the base point. In this note, we prove that these kernel functions vary smoothly. As an application of the smoothness result, we prove a Ramadanov-type theorem for these kernel functions on $\Omega\times\Omega$. This extends the previously known convergence results of these kernel functions. In fact, we have made these observations in a more general setting, that is, for weighted kernel functions and their higher-order counterparts.

DEK-Type orthogonal polynomials and a modification of the Christoffel formula

Abstract:In this note we revisit one of the first known examples of exceptional orthogonal polynomials that was introduced by Dubov, Eleonskii, and Kulagin in relation to nonharmonic oscillators with equidistant spectra. We dissect the DEK polynomials using the discrete Darboux transformations and unravel a characterization bypassing the differential equation that defines the DEK polynomials. This characterization also leads to a family of general orthogonal polynomials with missing degrees and this approach manifests its relation to biorthogonal polynomials introduced by Iserles and Nørsett, which are applicable to a whole range of problems in computational and applied analysis. We also obtain a modification of the Christoffel formula for this family since its classical form cannot be applied in this case.

Abstract:In this paper extensions of the classical Fourier, fractional Fourier and Radon transforms to superspace are studied. Previously, a Fourier transform in superspace was already studied, but with a different kernel. In this work, the fermionic part of the Fourier kernel has a natural symplectic structure, derived using a Clifford analysis approach. Several basic properties of these three transforms are studied. Using suitable generalizations of the Hermite polynomials to superspace (see [H. De Bie, F. Sommen, Hermite and Gegenbauer polynomials in superspace using Clifford analysis, J. Phys. A 40 (2007) 10441-10456]) an eigenfunction basis for the Fourier transform is constructed.
