Abstract:This survey on graphs of large girth consists of two parts. The first deals with some aspects of algebraic and extremal graph theory loosely related to the Moore bound. Our point of departure for the second, Ramsey theoretic, part are some constructions of graphs with large chromatic number and large girth; this will lead us to a discussion of the recent girth Ramsey theorem. Both parts can be enjoyed independently of each other.

Abstract:Voltage graphs are a powerful tool for constructing large graphs (called lifts) with prescribed properties as covering spaces of small base graphs. This makes them suitable for application to the degree/diameter problem, which is to determine the largest order of a graph with given degree and diameter. Many currently known largest graphs of degree $\le 15$ and diameter $\le 10$ have been found by computer search among Cayley graphs of semidirect products of cyclic groups. We show that all of them can in fact be described as lifts of smaller Cayley graphs of cyclic groups, with voltages in (other) cyclic groups. This opens up a new possible direction in the search for large vertex-transitive graphs of given degree and diameter.
On large bipartite graphs of diameter 3

Abstract:We consider the bipartite version of the {\it degree/diameter problem}, namely, given natural numbers $d\ge2$ and $D\ge2$, find the maximum number $\N^b(d,D)$ of vertices in a bipartite graph of maximum degree $d$ and diameter $D$. In this context, the bipartite Moore bound $\M^b(d,D)$ represents a general upper bound for $\N^b(d,D)$. Bipartite graphs of order $\M^b(d,D)$ are very rare, and determining $\N^b(d,D)$ still remains an open problem for most $(d,D)$ pairs. This paper is a follow-up to our earlier paper \cite{FPV12}, where a study on bipartite $(d,D,-4)$-graphs (that is, bipartite graphs of order $\M^b(d,D)-4$) was carried out. Here we first present some structural properties of bipartite $(d,3,-4)$-graphs, and later prove there are no bipartite $(7,3,-4)$-graphs. This result implies that the known bipartite $(7,3,-6)$-graph is optimal, and therefore $\N^b(7,3)=80$. Our approach also bears a proof of the uniqueness of the known bipartite $(5,3,-4)$-graph, and the non-existence of bipartite $(6,3,-4)$-graphs. In addition, we discover three new largest known bipartite (and also vertex-transitive) graphs of degree 11, diameter 3 and order 190, result which improves by 4 vertices the previous lower bound for $\N^b(11,3)$.

Abstract:There are finitely many graphs with diameter $2$ and girth 5. What if the girth 5 assumption is relaxed? Apart from stars, are there finitely many triangle-free graphs with diameter $2$ and no $K_{2,3}$ subgraph? This question is related to the existence of triangle-free strongly regular graphs, but allowing for a range of co-degrees gives the question a more extremal flavour. More generally, for fixed $s$ and $t$, are there infinitely many twin-free triangle-free $K_{s,t}$-free graphs with diameter 2? This paper presents partial results regarding these questions, including computational results, potential Cayley-graph and probabilistic constructions.

Large induced subgraphs of random graphs with given degree sequences

Abstract:We study a random graph $G$ with given degree sequence $\boldsymbol{d}$, with the aim of characterising the degree sequence of the subgraph induced on a given set $S$ of vertices. For suitable $\boldsymbol{d}$ and $S$, we show that the degree sequence of the subgraph induced on $S$ is essentially concentrated around a sequence that we can deterministically describe in terms of $\boldsymbol{d}$ and $S$. We then give an application of this result, determining a threshold for when this induced subgraph contains a giant component. We also apply a similar analysis to the case where $S$ is chosen by randomly sampling vertices with some probability $p$, i.e. site percolation, and determine a threshold for the existence of a giant component in this model. We consider the case where the density of the subgraph is either constant or slowly going to $0$ as $n$ goes to infinity, and the degree sequence $\boldsymbol{d}$ of the whole graph satisfies a certain maximum degree condition. Analogously, in the percolation model we consider the cases where either $p$ is a constant or where $p \to 0$ slowly. This is similar to work of Fountoulakis in 2007 and Janson in 2009, but we work directly in the random graph model to avoid the limitations of the configuration model that they used.

Abstract:The structure of the character degree graphs $\Delta(G)$, i.e. the prime graphs on the set $\mathrm{cd}(G)$ of the irreducible character degrees of a finite group $G$, such that $G$ is solvable and $\Delta(G)$ has diameter three, remains an intriguing area of study. However, a comprehensive understanding of these structures remains elusive. In this paper, we prove some properties and provide an infinite series of examples of this class of graphs, building on the ideas of Mark Lewis.

Abstract:The Aα -matrix of a graph G is defined as the convex linear combination of the adjacency matrix A(G) and the diagonal matrix of degrees D(G) , i.e. Aα(G)=αD(G)+(1−α)A(G) with α∈[0,1] . The maximum modulus among all Aα -eigenvalues is called the Aα -spectral radius. In this paper, we order the connected graphs with size m and diameter (at least) d from the second to the (⌊d2⌋+1) th regarding to the Aα -spectral radius for α∈[12,1) . As by-products, we identify the first ⌊d2⌋ largest trees of order n and diameter (at least) d in terms of their Aα -spectral radii, and characterize the unique graph with at least one cycle having the largest Aα -spectral radius among graphs of size m and diameter (at least) d . Consequently, the corresponding results for signless Laplacian matrix can be deduced as well.

Graphs with Large Girth and Small Cop Number

Abstract:In this paper we consider the cop number of graphs with no, or few, short cycles. We show that when $G$ is graph of girth $g$ and the minimum degree $\delta \geq 2$, then $c(G) = O(n\log(n)(\delta-1)^{-\lfloor \frac{g+1}{4} \rfloor})$ as a function of $n$. This extends work of Frankl and implies that if $G$ is large and dense in the sense that $\delta \geq n^{\frac{2}{g}+\epsilon}$, then $G$ satisfies Meyniel's conjecture, that is $c(G) = O(\sqrt{n})$. Moreover, it implies that if $G$ is large and dense in the sense that there $\delta \geq n^{\epsilon}$, some $\epsilon >0$, while also having girth $g \geq 7$, then there exists an $\alpha>0$ such that $c(G) = O(n^{1-\alpha})$, thereby satisfying the weak Meyniel's conjecture. Of course, this implies similar results for dense graphs with small, that is $O(n^{1-\alpha})$, numbers of short cycles, as each cycle can be broken by adding a single cop.

Abstract:The recently introduced model in S. R. Kharel et al.'s study [Degree-preserving network growth. Nature Physics 2022, 18, 100–106] uses matchings to insert new vertices of prescribed degrees into the current graph of an ever-growing graph sequence. The process depends both on the size of the largest available matching, which is the focus of this paper, as well as on the actual choice of the matching. Here, we first show that the question of whether a graphic degree sequence, extended with a new degree 2δ, remains graphic and is equivalent to the existence of a realization of the original degree sequence with a matching of size δ. Secondly, we present lower bounds for the size of the maximum matchings in any realization of the degree sequence. We then study the bounds on the size of maximal matchings in some realizations of the sequence, known as the potential matching number. We also estimate the minimum size of both maximal and maximum matchings, as determined by the degree sequence, independently of graphical realizations. Along this line we answer a question raised by T. Biedl et al.: Tight bounds on maximal and maximum matchings. Discrete Mathematics 2004, 285, 7–15.

Enumeration of dihypergraphs with specified degrees and edge types

Abstract:A dihypergraph consists of a set of vertices and a set of directed hyperedges, where each directed hyperedge is partitioned into a head and a tail. Directed hypergraphs are useful in many applications, including the study of chemical reactions or relational databases. We provide asymptotic formulae for the number of directed hypergraphs with given in-degree sequence, out-degree sequence, and the head and tail sizes of all directed hyperedges specified. Our formulae hold when none of the following parameters are too large: the maximum out-degree, the maximum in-degree, the maximum head size and the maximum tail size. If one of the four parameter sequences is near-regular, for example if each directed hyperedge has a tail of roughly the same size, then our formula is obtained using a simple argument based on existing asymptotic enumeration results for sparse bipartite graphs with given degree sequences. We also establish the same formula without the regularity assumption but with a larger relative error term, using a martingale argument.

We denote by $\mathrm{ex}_r(n,F)$ the largest value of $e_r(G)$ among $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs $G$, and by $\mathrm{ex}(n,S_r,G)$ the largest number of stars $S_r$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. The \textit{broom} $B(\ell,s)$ is the graph obtained from an $\ell$-vertex path by adding $s$ new leaves connected to a penultimate vertex $v$ of the path.

The directed Cayley diameter and the Davenport constant

Abstract:The directed Cayley diameter of a finite group is investigated in terms of the monoid of product-one sequences over the group, via the new notion of directed geodesic atoms. Two quantities associated to the set of directed geodesic atoms provide lower and upper bounds for the directed Cayley diameter. An algorithm for computing the directed geodesic atoms is implemented in GAP, and is applied to determine the above mentioned quantities for all non-abelian groups of order at most $42$, and for the alternating group of degree $5$. Furthermore, the small and large Davenport constants of all these groups are computed (excepting the large Davenport constant for $A_5$), extending thereby the formerly obtained results on the groups of order less than $32$. Along the way the directed Cayley diameter of a finite abelian group is expressed in terms of its invariants.

Abstract:Let Cd,k be the largest number of vertices in a Cayley digraph of degree d and diameter k, and let BCd,k be the largest order of a bipartite Cayley digraph for given d and k. For every degree d≥2 and for every odd k we construct Cayley digraphs of order 2k⌊d2⌋k and diameter at most k, where k≥3, and bipartite Cayley digraphs of order 2(k−1)⌊d2⌋k−1 and diameter at most k, where k≥5. These constructions yield the bounds Cd,k≥2k⌊d2⌋k for odd k≥3 and d≥3k2k+1, and BCd,k≥2(k−1)⌊d2⌋k−1 for odd k≥5 and d≥3k−1k−1+1. Our constructions give the best currently known bounds on the orders of large Cayley digraphs and bipartite Cayley digraphs of given degree and odd diameter k≥5. In our proofs we use new techniques based on properties of group automorphisms of direct products of abelian groups.

Geometric graphs with exponential chromatic number and arbitrary girth

Abstract:In 1975 Erdős initiated the study of the following very natural question. What can be said about the chromatic number of unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that have large girth? Over the years this question and its natural extension to $\mathbb{R}^d$ attracted considerable attention with the high-dimensional variant reiterated recently by Alon and Kupavskii. We prove that there exist unit distance graphs in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with chromatic number at least $(1.074 + o(1))^d$ that have arbitrarily large girth. This improves upon a series of results due to Kupavskii; Sagdeev; and Sagdeev and Raigorodskii and gives the first bound in which the base of the exponent does not tend to one with the girth. In addition, our construction can be made explicit which allows us to answer in a strong form a question of Kupavskii. Our arguments show graphs of large chromatic number and high girth exist in a number of other geometric settings including diameter graphs and orthogonality graphs.

Abstract:We consider numbers and sizes of independent sets in graphs with minimum degree at least $d$, when the number $n$ of vertices is large. In particular we investigate which of these graphs yield the maximum numbers of independent sets of different sizes, and which yield the largest random independent sets. We establish a strengthened form of a conjecture of Galvin concerning the first of these topics.

The degree-diameter problem for plane graphs with pentagonal faces

Abstract:The degree-diameter problem consists of finding the maximum number of vertices $n$ of a graph with diameter $d$ and maximum degree $\Delta$. This problem is well studied, and has been solved for plane graphs of low diameter in which every face is bounded by a 3-cycle (triangulations), and plane graphs in which every face is bounded by a 4-cycle (quadrangulations). In this paper, we solve the degree diameter problem for plane graphs of diameter 3 in which every face is bounded by a 5-cycle (pentagulations). We prove that if $\Delta \geq 8$, then $n \leq 3\Delta - 1$ for such graphs. This bound is sharp for $\Delta$ odd.

Abstract:A graph $G$ arrows a graph $H$ if in every $2$-edge-coloring of $G$ there exists a monochromatic copy of $H$. Schelp had the idea that if the complete graph $K_n$ arrows a small graph $H$, then every "dense" subgraph of $K_n$ also arrows $H$, and he outlined some problems in this direction. Our main result is in this spirit. We prove that for every sufficiently large $n$, if $n = 3t+r$ where $r \in \{0,1,2\}$ and $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with $\delta(G) \ge (3n-1)/4$, then for every $2$-edge-coloring of $G$, either there are cycles of every length $\{3, 4, 5, \dots, 2t+r\}$ of the same color, or there are cycles of every even length $\{4, 6, 8, \dots, 2t+2\}$ of the same color. Our result is tight in the sense that no longer cycles (of length $>2t+r$) can be guaranteed and the minimum degree condition cannot be reduced. It also implies the conjecture of Schelp that for every sufficiently large $n$, every $(3t-1)$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree larger than $3|V(G)|/4$ arrows the path $P_{2n}$ with $2n$ vertices. Moreover, it implies for sufficiently large $n$ the conjecture by Benevides, {\L}uczak, Scott, Skokan and White that for $n=3t+r$ where $r \in \{0,1,2\}$ and every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\delta(G) \ge 3n/4$, in each $2$-edge-coloring of $G$ there exists a monochromatic cycle of length at least $2t+r$.

Abstract:The Moore bound constitutes both an upper bound on the order of a graph of maximum degree $d$ and diameter $D=k$ and a lower bound on the order of a graph of minimum degree $d$ and odd girth $g=2k+1$. Graphs missing or exceeding the Moore bound by $\epsilon$ are called {\it graphs with defect or excess $\epsilon$}, respectively. While {\it Moore graphs} (graphs with $\epsilon=0$) and graphs with defect or excess 1 have been characterized almost completely, graphs with defect or excess 2 represent a wide unexplored area. Graphs with defect (excess) 2 satisfy the equation $G_{d,k}(A) = J_n + B$ ($G_{d,k}(A) = J_n-B$), where $A$ denotes the adjacency matrix of the graph in question, $n$ its order, $J_n$ the $n\times n$ matrix whose entries are all 1's, $B$ the adjacency matrix of a union of vertex-disjoint cycles, and $G_{d,k}(x)$ a polynomial with integer coefficients such that the matrix $G_{d,k}(A)$ gives the number of paths of length at most $k$ joining each pair of vertices in the graph. In particular, if $B$ is the adjacency matrix of a cycle of order $n$ we call the corresponding graphs \emph{graphs with cyclic defect or excess}; these graphs are the subject of our attention in this paper. We prove the non-existence of infinitely many such graphs. As the highlight of the paper we provide the asymptotic upper bound of $O(\frac{64}3d^{3/2})$ for the number of graphs of odd degree $d\ge3$ and cyclic defect or excess. This bound is in fact quite generous, and as a way of illustration, we show the non-existence of some families of graphs of odd degree $d\ge3$ and cyclic defect or excess. Actually, we conjecture that, apart from the Möbius ladder on 8 vertices, no non-trivial graph of any degree $\ge 3$ and cyclic defect or excess exists.
