Abstract:The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational measurement has revolutionized assessment methods, enabling automated scoring, rapid content analysis, and personalized feedback through machine learning and natural language processing. These advancements provide timely, consistent feedback and valuable insights into student performance, thereby enhancing the assessment experience. However, the deployment of AI in education also raises significant ethical concerns regarding validity, reliability, transparency, fairness, and equity. Issues such as algorithmic bias and the opacity of AI decision-making processes pose risks of perpetuating inequalities and affecting assessment outcomes. Responding to these concerns, various stakeholders, including educators, policymakers, and organizations, have developed guidelines to ensure ethical AI use in education. The National Council of Measurement in Education's Special Interest Group on AI in Measurement and Education (AIME) also focuses on establishing ethical standards and advancing research in this area. In this paper, a diverse group of AIME members examines the ethical implications of AI-powered tools in educational measurement, explores significant challenges such as automation bias and environmental impact, and proposes solutions to ensure AI's responsible and effective use in education.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in educational measurement and the ethical challenges it brings. With the development of AI technology, it has changed the way of educational assessment, such as automated scoring, rapid content analysis, and personalized feedback, thereby enhancing the teaching experience. However, the use of AI in education has also raised concerns about effectiveness and fairness, including algorithmic bias, lack of transparency, and potential exacerbation of inequality. In the paper, the authors analyze the ethical impact of AI tools in educational measurement, discuss key challenges such as automated bias and environmental impact, and propose solutions to ensure responsible and effective use of AI in education. They emphasize the need to establish ethical standards to ensure transparency and fairness in AI decision-making processes and to avoid adverse effects on certain groups of students. In addition, the paper also focuses on two specific areas: automatic item generation (AIG) and automated scoring. Automatic item generation utilizes AI to generate a large number of high-quality test items, but may suffer from issues such as content duplication and lack of diversity. While automated scoring systems improve efficiency, they also need to ensure fairness and impartiality in scoring. The paper calls for interdisciplinary teamwork, combining the expertise of human experts, to ensure efficient and ethical application of AI in educational measurement. It is also necessary to address potential biases in AI-generated content, ensuring inclusivity and fairness, as well as protecting data privacy and security. In conclusion, this paper aims to address how to use AI technology in education in a reasonable and ethical manner, in order to maximize its benefits while overcoming ethical and fairness challenges that may arise.
