Abstract:The matrix rank minimization problem arises in many engineering applications. As this problem is NP-hard, a nonconvex relaxation of matrix rank minimization, called the Schatten-p quasi-norm minimization (0 < p < 1), has been developed to approximate the rank function closely. We study the performance of projected gradient descent algorithm for solving the Schatten-p quasi-norm minimization (0 < p < 1) problem. Based on the matrix restricted isometry property (M-RIP), we give the convergence guarantee and error bound for this algorithm and show that the algorithm is robust to noise with an exponential convergence rate.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Optimization, Volume 34, Issue 1, Page 563-589, March 2024. Given closed convex sets [math], [math], and some nonzero linear maps [math], [math], of suitable dimensions, the multiset split feasibility problem aims at finding a point in [math] based on computing projections onto [math] and multiplications by [math] and [math]. In this paper, we consider the associated best approximation problem, i.e., the problem of computing projections onto [math]; we refer to this problem as the best approximation problem in multiset split feasibility settings (BA-MSF). We adapt the Dykstra's projection algorithm, which is classical for solving the BA-MSF in the special case when all [math], to solve the general BA-MSF. Our Dykstra-type projection algorithm is derived by applying (proximal) coordinate gradient descent to the Lagrange dual problem, and it only requires computing projections onto [math] and multiplications by [math] and [math] in each iteration. Under a standard relative interior condition and a genericity assumption on the point we need to project, we show that the dual objective satisfies the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property with an explicitly computable exponent on a neighborhood of the (typically unbounded) dual solution set when each [math] is [math]-cone reducible for some [math]: this class of sets covers the class of [math]-cone reducible sets, which include all polyhedrons, second-order cone, and the cone of positive semidefinite matrices as special cases. Using this, explicit convergence rate (linear or sublinear) of the sequence generated by the Dykstra-type projection algorithm is derived. Concrete examples are constructed to illustrate the necessity of some of our assumptions.

Limitations of scaling and universality in stock market data

Abstract:We present evidence, that if a large enough set of high resolution stock market data is analyzed, certain analogies with physics -- such as scaling and universality -- fail to capture the full complexity of such data. Despite earlier expectations, the mean value per trade, the mean number of trades per minute and the mean trading activity do not show scaling with company capitalization, there is only a non-trivial monotonous dependence. The strength of correlations present in the time series of traded value is found to be non-universal: The Hurst exponent increases logarithmically with capitalization. A similar trend is displayed by intertrade time intervals. This is a clear indication that stylized facts need not be fully universal, but can instead have a well-defined dependence on company size.

On the rank index of projective curves of almost minimal degree

Abstract:In this article, we investigate the rank index of projective curves $\mathscr{C} \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ of degree $r+1$ when $\mathscr{C} = \pi_p (\tilde{\mathscr{C}})$ for the standard rational normal curve $\tilde{\mathscr{C}} \subset \mathbb{P}^{r+1}$ and a point $p \in \mathbb{P}^{r+1} \setminus \tilde{\mathscr{C}}^3$. Here, the rank index of a closed subscheme $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ is defined to be the least integer $k$ such that its homogeneous ideal can be generated by quadratic polynomials of rank $\leq k$. Our results show that the rank index of $\mathscr{C}$ is at most $4$, and it is exactly equal to $3$ when the projection center $p$ is a coordinate point of $\mathbb{P}^{r+1}$. We also investigate the case where $p \in \tilde{\mathscr{C}}^3 \setminus \tilde{\mathscr{C}}^2$.

Abstract:We study the $L^p$ regularity of the Bergman projection $P$ over the symmetrized polydisc in $\mathbb C^n$. We give a decomposition of the Bergman projection on the polydisc and obtain an operator equivalent to the Bergman projection over anti-symmetric function spaces. Using it, we obtain the $L^p$ irregularity of $P$ for $p=\frac{2n}{n-1}$ which also implies that $P$ is $L^p$ bounded if and only if $p\in (\frac{2n}{n+1},\frac{2n}{n-1})$.

Abstract:We prove that if $M \longrightarrow P$ is a small cover of a compact right-angled hyperbolic polyhedron $P$ then $M$ admits a cofinal tower of finite sheeted covers with positive rank gradient. As a corollary, if $\pi_1(M)$ is commensurable with the reflection group of $P$, then $M$ admits a cofinal tower of finite sheeted covers with positive rank gradient.

Abstract:We study the case of a real homogeneous polynomial $P$ whose minimal real and complex decompositions in terms of powers of linear forms are different. We prove that, if the sum of the complex and the real ranks of $P$ is at most $ 3°(P)-1$, then the difference of the two decompositions is completely determined either on a line or on a conic or two disjoint lines.

Abstract:We give a necessary and sufficient condition for symmetric tensors to have symmetric rank decompositions and give some further results on the Comon's Conjecture (i.e. the rank and symmetric rank agree for a symmetric tensor). In particular, as an application, we prove that if an m-order 2-dimensional symmetric tensor has a symmetric rank decomposition, then its symmetric rank equals its rank or its rank plus one.

Abstract:The starting point of this paper is the computation of minimal hyperbolic polynomials of duals of cones arising from chordal sparsity patterns. From that, we investigate the relation between ranks of homogeneous cones and their minimal polynomials. Along the way, we answer in the negative a question posed in an earlier paper and show examples of homogeneous cones that cannot be realized as rank-one generated (ROG) hyperbolicity cones.

Abstract:Abstract Hyperbolic polynomials elegantly encode a rich class of convex cones that includes polyhedral and spectrahedral cones. Hyperbolic polynomials are closed under taking polars and the corresponding cones-the derivative cones-yield relaxations for the associated optimization problem and exhibit interesting facial properties. While it is unknown if every hyperbolicity cone is a section of the positive semidefinite cone, it is natural to ask whether spectrahedral cones are closed under taking derivative cones. In this note we give an affirmative answer for polyhedral cones by exhibiting an explicit spectrahedral representation for the first derivative cone. We also prove that higher polars do not have a determinantal representation which shows that the problem for general spectrahedral cones is considerably more difficult

Abstract:Let $1\leq p\leq n$ be two positive integers. For a linearly nondegenerate holomorphic mapping $f\colon\mathbb{C}^p\rightarrow\mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{C})$ of maximal rank intersecting a family of hyperplanes in general position, we obtain a Cartan's type Second Main Theorem in which the counting functions are truncated to level $n+1-p$. Our result strengthens the classical results of Stoll and Vitter, and interpolates the important works of Cartan and Carlson-Griffiths.

Abstract:The fundamental theorem on commutant lifting due to Sarason does not carry over to the setting of the polydisc. This paper presents two classifications of commutant lifting in several variables. The first classification links the lifting problem to the contractivity of certain linear functionals. The second one transforms it into nonnegative real numbers. We also solve the Nevanlinna-Pick interpolation problem for bounded analytic functions on the polydisc. Along the way, we solve a perturbation problem for bounded analytic functions. Commutant lifting and interpolation on the polydisc solve two well-known problems in Hilbert function space theory.

Abstract:Facial reduction, FR, is a regularization technique for convex programs where the strict feasibility constraint qualification, CQ, fails. Though this CQ holds generically, failure is pervasive in applications such as semidefinite relaxations of hard discrete optimization problems. In this paper we relate FR to the analysis of the convergence behaviour of a semi-smooth Newton root finding method for the projection onto a spectrahedron, i.e., onto the intersection of a linear manifold and the semidefinite cone. In the process, we derive and use an elegant formula for the projection onto a face of the semidefinite cone. We show further that the ill-conditioning of the Jacobian of the Newton method near optimality characterizes the degeneracy of the nearest point in the spectrahedron. We apply the results, both theoretically and empirically, to the problem of finding nearest points to the sets of: (i) correlation matrices or the elliptope; and (ii) semidefinite relaxations of permutation matrices or the vontope, i.e., the feasible sets for the semidefinite relaxations of the max-cut and quadratic assignment problems, respectively.

The Schwarzian derivative and the degree of a classical minimal surface

Abstract:Using the Schwarzian derivative we construct a sequence $\left(P_{\ell}\right)_{\ell \geqslant 2}$ of meromorphic differentials on every non-flat oriented minimal surface in Euclidean $3$-space. The differentials $\left(P_{\ell}\right)_{\ell \geqslant 2}$ are invariant under all deformations of the surface arising via the Weierstrass representation and depend on the induced metric and its derivatives only. A minimal surface is said to have degree $n$ if its $n$-th differential is a polynomial expression in the differentials of lower degree. We observe that several well-known minimal surfaces have small degree, including Enneper's surface, the helicoid/catenoid and the Scherk - as well as the Schwarz family. Furthermore, it is shown that locally and away from umbilic points every minimal surface can be approximated by a sequence of minimal surfaces of increasing degree.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the properties and the precise solutions of the Mordukhovich derivatives of the set-valued metric projection operator onto some closed balls in some general Banach spaces. In the Banach space c , we find the properties of Mordukhovich derivatives of the set-valued metric projection operator onto the closed subspace c 0 . We show that the metric projection from C [0, 1] to polynomial with degree less than or equal to n is a single-valued mapping. We investigate its Mordukhovich derivatives and G aˆ teaux directional derivatives.

Abstract:The square root rank of a nonnegative matrix A is the minimum rank of a matrix B such that A=B ∘ B, where ∘ denotes entrywise product. We show that the square root rank of the slack matrix of the correlation polytope is exponential. Our main technique is a way to lower bound the rank of certain matrices under arbitrary sign changes of the entries using properties of the roots of polynomials in number fields. The square root rank is an upper bound on the positive semidefinite rank of a matrix, and corresponds the special case where all matrices in the factorization are rank-one.

Abstract:We investigate projection constants within classes of multivariate polynomials over finite-dimensional real Hilbert spaces. Specifically, we consider the projection constant for spaces of spherical harmonics and spaces of homogeneous polynomials as well as for spaces of polynomials of finite degree on the unit sphere. We establish a connection between these quantities and certain weighted $L_1$-norms of specific Jacobi polynomials. As a consequence, we present exact formulas, computable expressions and asymptotically accurate estimates for them. The real case we address is considerably more nuanced than its complex counterpart.

Abstract:Given a $d$-tuple $T$ of commuting contractions on Hilbert space and a polynomial $p$ in $d$-variables, we seek upper bounds for the norm of the operator $p(T)$. Results of von Neumann and Andô show that if $d=1$ or $d=2$, the upper bound $\|p(T)\| \le \|p\|_\infty$, holds, where the supremum norm is taken over the polydisc $\mathbb{D}^d$. We show that for $d=3$, there exists a universal constant $C$ such that $\|p(T)\| \le C \|p\|_\infty$ for every homogeneous polynomial $p$. We also show that for general $d$ and arbitrary polynomials, the norm $\|p(T)\|$ is dominated by a certain Besov-type norm of $p$.

Abstract:We make sharp estimates to obtain a Schwarz type lemma for the symmetrized polydisc $\gn$ and for the extended symmetrized polydisc $\Gn$. We explicitly construct an interpolating function under certain condition. To do so, we followed the methods described in \cite{Young-LMS}. Also we find a few geometric interplay between the members of the family $\Gn$ and its closure $\widetilde{\Gamma}_n$.
