Abstract:We give another proof of ordinal analysis of $I\Sigma_{k}$-fragments of Peano Arithmetic which is free from cut-elimination of $\omega$-logic. Our main tool is a direct witnessing argument utilizing game notion, motivated from the realm of proof complexity and bounded arithmetic.

Abstract:One of the elegant achievements in the history of proof theory is the characterization of the provably total recursive functions of an arithmetical theory by its proof-theoretic ordinal as a way to measure the time complexity of the functions. Unfortunately, the machinery is not sufficiently fine-grained to be applicable on the weak theories on the one hand and to capture the bounded functions with bounded definitions of strong theories, on the other. In this paper, we develop such a machinery to address the bounded theorems of both strong and weak theories of arithmetic. In the first part, we provide a refined version of ordinal analysis to capture the feasibly definable and bounded functions that are provably total in $\mathrm{PA}+\bigcup_{\beta \prec \alpha} \mathrm{TI}(\prec_{\beta})$, the extension of Peano arithmetic by transfinite induction up to the ordinals below $\alpha$. Roughly speaking, we identify the functions as the ones that are computable by a sequence of $\mathrm{PV}$-provable polynomial time modifications on an initial polynomial time value, where the computational steps are indexed by the ordinals below $\alpha$, decreasing by the modifications. In the second part, and choosing $l \leq k$, we use similar technique to capture the functions with bounded definitions in the theory $T^k_2$ (resp. $S^k_2$) as the functions computable by exponentially (resp. polynomially) long sequence of $\mathrm{PV}_{k-l+1}$-provable reductions between $l$-turn games starting with an explicit $\mathrm{PV}_{k-l+1}$-provable winning strategy for the first game.

Abstract:We analyze Coquand's game-theoretic interpretation of Peano Arithmetic through the lens of elementary descent recursion. In Coquand's game semantics, winning strategies correspond to infinitary cut-free proofs and cut elimination corresponds to debates between these winning strategies. The proof of cut elimination, i.e., the proof that such debates eventually terminate, is by transfinite induction on certain interaction sequences of ordinals. In this paper, we provide a direct implementation of Coquand's proof, one that allows us to describe winning strategies by descent recursive functions. As a byproduct, we obtain yet another proof of well-known results about provably recursive functions and functionals.

Abstract:In this paper we give an ordinal analysis of the theory of second order arithmetic. We do this by working with proof trees -- that is, "deductions" which may not be well-founded. Working in a suitable theory, we are able to represent functions on proof trees as yet further proof trees satisfying a suitable analog of well-foundedness. Iterating this process allows us to represent higher order functions as well: since functions on proof trees are just proof trees themselves, these functions can easily be extended to act on proof trees which are themselves understood as functions. The corresponding system of ordinals parallels this, using higher order collapsing function.

Abstract:Current methods for solving games embody a form of "procedural rationality" that invites logical analysis in its own right. This paper is a brief case study of Backward Induction for extensive games, replacing earlier static logical definitions by stepwise dynamic ones. We consider a number of analysis from recent years that look different conceptually, and find that they are all mathematically equivalent. This shows how an abstract logical perspective can bring out basic invariant structure in games. We then generalize this to an exploration of fixed-point logics on finite trees that best fit game-theoretic equilibria. We end with some open questions that suggest a broader program for merging current computational logics with notions and results from game theory. This paper is largely a program for opening up an area: an extended version of the technical results will be found in the forthcoming dissertation [26].

Abstract:The number of quantifiers needed to express first-order properties is captured by two-player combinatorial games called multi-structural (MS) games. We play these games on linear orders and strings, and introduce a technique we call "parallel play", that dramatically reduces the number of quantifiers needed in many cases. Linear orders and strings are the most basic representatives of ordered structures -- a class of structures that has historically been notoriously difficult to analyze. Yet, in this paper, we provide upper bounds on the number of quantifiers needed to characterize different-sized subsets of these structures, and prove that they are tight up to constant factors, including, in some cases, up to a factor of $1+\varepsilon$, for arbitrarily small $\varepsilon$.

Ajtai's theorem for $T^2_2(R)$ and pebble games with backtracking

Abstract:We introduce a pebble game extended by backtracking options for one of the two players (called Prover) and reduce the provability of the pigeonhole principle for a generic predicate $R$ in the bounded arithmetic $T^2_2(R)$ to the existence of a particular kind of winning strategy (called oblivious) for Prover in the game. While the unprovability of the said principle in $T^2_2(R)$ is an immediate consequence of a celebrated theorem of Ajtai (which deals with a stronger theory $T_2(R)$), up-to-date no methods working for $T^2_2(R)$ directly (in particular without switching lemma) are known. Although the full analysis of the introduced pebble game is left open, as a first step towards resolving it, we restrict ourselves to a simplified version of the game. In this case, Prover can use only two pebbles and move in an extremely oblivious way. Besides, a series of backtracks can be made only once during a play. Under these assumptions, we show that no strategy of Prover can be winning.

Abstract:We present a game semantics for Linear Logic, in which formulas denote games and proofs denote winning strategies. We show that our semantics yields a categorical model of Linear Logic and prove full completeness for Multiplicative Linear Logic with the MIX rule: every winning strategy is the denotation of a unique cut-free proof net. A key role is played by the notion of {\em history-free} strategy; strong connections are made between history-free strategies and the Geometry of Interaction. Our semantics incorporates a natural notion of polarity, leading to a refined treatment of the additives. We make comparisons with related work by Joyal, Blass et al.

Game Comonads & Generalised Quantifiers

Abstract:Game comonads, introduced by Abramsky, Dawar and Wang and developed by Abramsky and Shah, give an interesting categorical semantics to some Spoiler-Duplicator games that are common in finite model theory. In particular they expose connections between one-sided and two-sided games, and parameters such as treewidth and treedepth and corresponding notions of decomposition. In the present paper, we expand the realm of game comonads to logics with generalised quantifiers. In particular, we introduce a comonad graded by two parameters $n \leq k$ such that isomorphisms in the resulting Kleisli category are exactly Duplicator winning strategies in Hella's $n$-bijection game with $k$ pebbles. We define a one-sided version of this game which allows us to provide a categorical semantics for a number of logics with generalised quantifiers. We also give a novel notion of tree decomposition that emerges from the construction.

Abstract:I develop in depth the machinery of $(\mathcal L, n)$-models originally introduced by Shelah and, independently in a slightly different form by Kripke. This machinery allows fairly routine constructions of true but unprovable sentences in $\mathsf{PA}$. I give two applications: 1. Shelah's alternative proof of the Paris-Harrington theorem, and 2. The independence over $\mathsf{PA}$ of a new $\Pi^0_1$ Ramsey theoretic statement about colorings of finite sequences of structures.

Abstract:We extend the inflationary fixed-point logic, IFP, with a new kind of second-order quantifiers which have (poly-)logarithmic bounds. We prove that on ordered structures the new logic ?logωIFP captures the limited nondeterminism class βP. In order to study its expressive power, we also design a new version of Ehrenfeucht-Fra?ssé game for this logic and show that our capturing result will not hold in the general case, i.e., on all the finite structures.

A new version of Ehrenfeucht-Fraisse game for the new logic is also designed in order to study its expressive power.

Abstract:Game logics describe general games through powers of players for forcing outcomes. In particular, they encode an algebra of sequential game operations such as choice, dual and composition. Logic games are special games for specific purposes such as proof or semantical evaluation for first-order or modal languages. We show that the general algebra of game operations coincides with that over just logical evaluation games, whence the latter are quite general after all. The main tool in proving this is a representation of arbitrary games as modal or first-order evaluation games. We probe how far our analysis extends to product operations on games. We also discuss some more general consequences of this new perspective for standard logic.

Abstract:We revisit the crucial issue of natural game equivalences, and semantics of game logics based on these. We present reasons for investigating finer concepts of game equivalence than equality of standard powers, though staying short of modal bisimulation. Concretely, we propose a more finegrained notion of equality of "basic powers" which record what players can force plus what they leave to others to do, a crucial feature of interaction. This notion is closer to game-theoretic strategic form, as we explain in detail, while remaining amenable to logical analysis. We determine the properties of basic powers via a new representation theorem, find a matching "instantial neighborhood game logic", and show how our analysis can be extended to a new game algebra and dynamic game logic.
The Lattice Problem for Models of $\mathsf{PA}$

Abstract:The lattice problem for models of Peano Arithmetic ($\mathsf{PA}$) is to determine which lattices can be represented as lattices of elementary submodels of a model of $\mathsf{PA}$, or, in greater generality, for a given model $\mathcal{M}$, which lattices can be represented as interstructure lattices of elementary submodels $\mathcal{K}$ of an elementary extension $\mathcal{N}$ such that $\mathcal{M} \preccurlyeq \mathcal{K} \preccurlyeq \mathcal{N}$. The problem has been studied for the last 60 years and the results and their proofs show an interesting interplay between the model theory of PA, Ramsey style combinatorics, lattice representation theory, and elementary number theory. We present a survey of the most important results together with a detailed analysis of some special cases to explain and motivate a technique developed by James Schmerl for constructing elementary extensions with prescribed interstructure lattices. The last section is devoted to a discussion of lesser-known results about lattices of elementary submodels of countable recursively saturated models of PA.

Parity Games on Temporal Graphs

Abstract:Temporal graphs are a popular modelling mechanism for dynamic complex systems that extend ordinary graphs with discrete time. Simply put, time progresses one unit per step and the availability of edges can change with time. We consider the complexity of solving $\omega$-regular games played on temporal graphs where the edge availability is ultimately periodic and fixed a priori. We show that solving parity games on temporal graphs is decidable in PSPACE, only assuming the edge predicate itself is in PSPACE. A matching lower bound already holds for what we call punctual reachability games on static graphs, where one player wants to reach the target at a given, binary encoded, point in time. We further study syntactic restrictions that imply more efficient procedures. In particular, if the edge predicate is in $P$ and is monotonically increasing for one player and decreasing for the other, then the complexity of solving games is only polynomially increased compared to static graphs.

Abstract:The current ordinal analysis provides the proof-theoretic ordinal of a theory, which calibrates the robustness of the $\Pi^1_1$-consequences of the theory. We can ask whether there is an ordinal characteristic capturing more complex consequences, and it turns out that we can define the $\Sigma^1_2$-proof-theoretic ordinal capturing the robustness of the $\Sigma^1_2$-consequences of a theory. In this paper, we study the behavior of $\Sigma^1_2$-proof-theoretic ordinal, and it turns out that $\Sigma^1_2$-proof-theoretic ordinal also follows an analogue of Walsh's characterization of proof-theoretic ordinal.

Finite Variable Counting Logics with Restricted Requantification

Abstract:Counting logics with a bounded number of variables form one of the central concepts in descriptive complexity theory. Although they restrict the number of variables that a formula can contain, the variables can be nested within scopes of quantified occurrences of themselves. In other words, the variables can be requantified. We study the fragments obtained from counting logics by restricting requantification for some but not necessarily all the variables. Similar to the logics without limitation on requantification, we develop tools to investigate the restricted variants. Specifically, we introduce a bijective pebble game in which certain pebbles can only be placed once and for all, and a corresponding two-parametric family of Weisfeiler-Leman algorithms. We show close correspondences between the three concepts. By using a suitable cops-and-robber game and adaptations of the Cai-Fürer-Immerman construction, we completely clarify the relative expressive power of the new logics. We show that the restriction of requantification has beneficial algorithmic implications in terms of graph identification. Indeed, we argue that with regard to space complexity, non-requantifiable variables only incur an additive polynomial factor when testing for equivalence. In contrast, for all we know, requantifiable variables incur a multiplicative linear factor. Finally, we observe that graphs of bounded tree-depth and 3-connected planar graphs can be identified using no, respectively, only a very limited number of requantifiable variables.

Abstract:There is no infinite sequence of $\Pi^1_1$-sound extensions of $\mathsf{ACA}_0$ each of which proves $\Pi^1_1$-reflection of the next. This engenders a well-founded ``reflection ranking'' of $\Pi^1_1$-sound extensions of $\mathsf{ACA}_0$. For any $\Pi^1_1$-sound theory $T$ extending $\mathsf{ACA}^+_0$, the reflection rank of $T$ equals the proof-theoretic ordinal of $T$. This provides an alternative characterization of the notion of ``proof-theoretic ordinal,'' which is one of the central concepts of proof theory. In this note we provide an alternative proof of this theorem using cut-elimination for infinitary derivations.

Abstract:We define a version of the Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé game in the setting of metric model theory and continuous first-order logic and show that the second player having a winning strategy in a game of length $n$ exactly corresponds to being elementarily equivalent up to quantifier rank $n$. We then demonstrate the usefulness of the game with some examples. Finally, we discus connections between the game of length $\omega$ and infinitary logic.
