Abstract:Applying the holographic method, we investigate an RG flow and IR physics holographically when a two-dimensional conformal field theory is deformed by a relevant scalar operator. To do so, we first assume an RG flow from a UV to new IR CFT. On the dual gravity side, such an RG flow can be described by rolling down of a bulk scalar field from an unstable to stable equilibrium point. After considering a simple scalar potential allowing several local extrema, we study the change of a ground state along the RG flow. We show that the entanglement entropy at an IR fixed point leads to a logarithmic divergence due to restoring of the conformal symmetry. We study how the change of the ground state affects two-point functions. In the probe limit, we numerically calculate the change of a conformal dimension caused by the modification of the ground state. We further study the analytic form of the IR conformal dimension which is perfectly matched to the numerical result.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper discusses how to study the renormalization group (RG) flow and infrared (IR) physics of two-dimensional conformal field theory under the action of relevant scalar operators within the framework of the holographic principle in string theory. The authors first assume an RG flow from an ultraviolet (UV) fixed point to a new infrared fixed point and describe this flow on both sides of gravity, i.e., simulate it by the rolling of a scalar field in a four-dimensional space from an unstable equilibrium point to a stable point. They consider a simple scalar potential that allows for multiple local extrema and investigate the ground state changes along the RG flow. The paper focuses on two aspects: the change in entanglement entropy in the RG flow, which is closely related to the ground state changes, and the effect of ground state changes on the two-point functions (i.e., the correlation functions of local operators). Numerical simulations show that the entanglement entropy exhibits logarithmic divergence at the infrared fixed point due to the restoration of conformal symmetry. The authors also analyze how the entanglement entropy depends on the coupling constant through semi-analytic calculations in the near-infrared regime and find that the entanglement entropy diverges at the critical coupling constant, which corresponds to the value of the infrared fixed point. The authors further investigate how the ground state changes affect the scaling dimension (or anomalous scaling dimension) of the operators, which can be described by the geodesic length on the boundary according to the AdS/CFT correspondence. The numerical results coincide with the analytical results in this regard. In summary, this paper utilizes the holographic principle to gain a deeper understanding of how non-perturbative RG flow affects the infrared physical properties of two-dimensional quantum field theories, including the divergent behavior of entanglement entropy and the change in scaling dimensions of relevant operators. These results are of significant importance for a better understanding of strongly interacting systems and holographic quantum field theories.
