Abstract:We provide a detailed study of the spectral properties of the linear operator $H(\varepsilon)=-(\varepsilon^{2}\chi_{\Omega_{\varepsilon}}+\chi_{\Omega^{c}_{\varepsilon}})\Delta$ modeling, through the wave equation $(\partial_{tt}+H(\varepsilon))u=0$, the dynamics of acoustic waves in the presence of a small inhomogeneity of size $\varepsilon$ having high contrast $\varepsilon^{-2}$. In particular, we give precise results on the localization of the resonances of $H(\varepsilon)$ and their first-order $\varepsilon$-expansions; the latter are explicitly expressed in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Newton potential operator of the set $\Omega$ whose rescaling of size $\varepsilon$ defines $\Omega_{\varepsilon}$.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the spectral properties of the acoustic wave dynamics linear operator \(H(\varepsilon)\) in the presence of a small - scale, high - contrast inhomogeneity, especially the localization of its resonant states and their first - order expansion with respect to the small parameter \(\varepsilon\). Specifically, the paper studies the distribution of the resonant states of \(H(\varepsilon)\) in the small \(\varepsilon\) limit and gives the first - order \(\varepsilon\) - expansion formulas of these resonant states.
### Background and Problem Description of the Paper
The paper considers a linear operator \(H(\varepsilon)\) depending on a small parameter \(\varepsilon\), which is defined as follows:
\[ H(\varepsilon) : H^2(\mathbb{R}^3) \subset L^2(\mathbb{R}^3) \to L^2(\mathbb{R}^3), \quad H(\varepsilon) := -b_\varepsilon \Delta, \]
where \(b_\varepsilon := \varepsilon^2 \chi_{\Omega_\varepsilon} + \chi_{\Omega_\varepsilon^c}\), \(\chi_{\Omega_\varepsilon}\) is the characteristic function of the set \(\Omega_\varepsilon\), and \(\Omega_\varepsilon\) is a scaled version of a reference set \(\Omega\), that is:
\[ \Omega_\varepsilon := \{ x \in \mathbb{R}^3 : x = \varepsilon y, y \in \Omega \}. \]
### Research Objectives
1. **Spectral Properties**: The paper first studies the spectral properties of \(H(\varepsilon)\), especially the properties of the absolutely continuous spectrum and the discrete spectrum.
2. **Resonant States**: Further, the paper analyzes in detail the resonant states of \(H(\varepsilon)\), especially the localization of these resonant states in the small \(\varepsilon\) limit and their first - order \(\varepsilon\) - expansion.
### Main Results
- **Spectral Properties**: The paper proves that the absolutely continuous spectrum of \(H(\varepsilon)\) is \([0, +\infty)\) and there is no embedded discrete spectrum.
- **Resonant States**: By introducing the operator \(M_\kappa(\varepsilon)\) and the existence of its inverse, the paper determines the set \(e(H(\varepsilon))\) of the resonant states of \(H(\varepsilon)\). In particular, for each \(\lambda \in \sigma_{\text{disc}}(N_0)\), there are \(m\) resonant states (counting multiplicities) near \(\lambda^{-1}\), and the first - order \(\varepsilon\) - expansion formulas of these resonant states are given:
\[
\kappa^2_{\circ,j}(\varepsilon) = \frac{1}{\lambda_\circ} - i \varepsilon \left| \langle 1, e^\circ_j \rangle \right|^2 \frac{1}{4\pi \lambda_\circ^{5/2}} + O(\varepsilon^2).
\]
### Application Prospects
These results not only provide an in - depth understanding of small - scale acoustic wave dynamics systems, but also provide a theoretical basis for similar problems in other physical systems, such as the propagation problem of electromagnetic waves in high - contrast media. In addition, these analysis methods and results can be applied to practical problems such as micro - resonators, which is helpful for the design and optimization.
