Abstract:In this work, we introduce a class of fractal subsets of $[0,1]$ corresponding to the aperiodically ordered metallic means sequences. We find simple formulas for the fractal dimension for these fractals.

Abstract:Fractals and quasiperiodic structures share self-similarity as a structural property. Motivated by the link between Fibonacci fractals and quasicrystals which are scaled by the golden mean ratio $\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, we introduce and characterize a family of metallic-mean ratio fractals. We calculate the spatial properties of this generalized family, including their boundaries, which are also fractal. We then demonstrate how these fractals can be related to aperiodic tilings, and show how we can decorate them to produce new, fractal tilings.

Generalization of 3D Mandelbrot and Julia Sets

Abstract:In order to further enrich the form of 3D Mandelbrot and Julia sets, this paper first presents two methods of generating 3D fractal sets by utilizing discrete modifications of the standard quaternion algebra and analyzes the limitations in them. To overcome these limitations, a novel method for generating 3D fractal sets based on a 3D number system named ternary algebra is proposed. Both theoretical analyses and experimental results demonstrate that the ternary-algebra-based method is superior to any one of the quad-algebra-based methods, including the first two methods presented in this paper, because it is more intuitive, less time consuming and can completely control the geometric structure of the resulting sets. A ray-casting algorithm based on period checking is developed with the goal of obtaining high-quality fractal images and is used to render all the fractal sets generated in our experiments. It is hoped that the investigations conducted in this paper would result in new perspectives for the generalization of 3D Mandelbrot and Julia sets and for the generation of other deterministic 3D fractals as well.
On new fractal phenomena connected with infinite linear IFS

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Abstract:The classification of gapped phases of non-interacting fermions hinges on the tenfold symmetries and on the spatial dimension. The notion of dimension leads to a well defined demarcation between bulk and edge. Here we explore the nature of topological phases in systems where the distinction between bulk and edge is nebulous, of which fractal lattices are canonical examples. Our key finding is that in homogeneous fractal lattices (where every site is equally coordinated), there are no gapped topological phases. What appears instead is a novel metallic state -- the fractalized metal -- whose low energy states arrange hierarchically on the structure of the fractal that hosts them. We study the properties (such as chiral transport) of this metal and demonstrate its robustness to disorder. Further, by studying a variety of fractal models we establish that the homogeneity of the fractal is a key condition for the realization of such fractalized metallic states.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of gap sequences for compact sets E subset of R(d), which is a generalization of the gap sequences of compact sets on the real line. We show that if the gap sequences of two fractal sets are not equivalent, then these two sets cannot be Lipschitz equivalent, where the latter fact is usually very hard to verify. Finally, we show that for some typical fractal sets, the gap sequences characterize the upper box dimension.

Abstract:For every positive integer $n$, we introduce a set $\mathcal{T}_n$ made of $(n+3)^2$ Wang tiles (unit squares with labeled edges). We represent a tiling by translates of these tiles as a configuration $\mathbb{Z}^2\to\mathcal{T}_n$. A configuration is valid if the common edge of adjacent tiles have the same label. For every $n\geq1$, we show that the Wang shift $\Omega_n$ defined as the set of valid configurations over the tiles $\mathcal{T}_n$ is self-similar, aperiodic and minimal for the shift action. We say that $\{\Omega_n\}_{n\geq1}$ is a family of metallic mean Wang shifts since the inflation factor of the self-similarity of $\Omega_n$ is the positive root of the polynomial $x^2-nx-1$. This root is sometimes called the $n$-th metallic mean, and in particular, the golden mean when $n=1$ and the silver mean when $n=2$. When $n=1$, the set of Wang tiles $\mathcal{T}_1$ is equivalent to the Ammann aperiodic set of 16 Wang tiles.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the connection between a class of real number sequences and local fractal functions in terms of fractal dimensions. Under certain conditions, we show that the Box dimension of the graph of a local fractal function with a single unbounded variation point is equal to that of its zero points set plus one. Several concrete examples of such functions whose Box dimension can take any numbers belonging to [1,2] have also been given. This work may provide new approaches to the construction of various local fractal functions with the required Box dimension in the future.

These materials are disordered but possess none of the defects seen in crystalline counterparts. Chen et al. developed a model for metallic glasses in which clusters of atoms float free in the liquid, begin to jam, and finally organize into a short-range fractal structure below the glass transition temperature. Abstract:We forge connections between the theory of fractal sets obtained as attractors of iterated function systems and process calculi. To this end, we reinterpret Milner's expressions for processes as contraction operators on a complete metric space. When the space is, for example, the plane, the denotations of fixed point terms correspond to familiar fractal sets. We give a sound and complete axiomatization of fractal equivalence, the congruence on terms consisting of pairs that construct identical self-similar sets in all interpretations. We further make connections to labelled Markov chains and to invariant measures. In all of this work, we use important results from process calculi. For example, we use Rabinovich's completeness theorem for trace equivalence in our own completeness theorem. In addition to our results, we also raise many questions related to both fractals and process calculi.

Abstract:The theory of complex dimensions of fractal strings developed by Lapidus and van Frankenhuijsen has proven to be a powerful tool for the study of Minkowski measurability of fractal subsets of the real line. In a very general setting, the Minkowski measurability of such sets is characterized by the structure of corresponding complex dimensions. Also, this tool is particularly effective in the setting of self-similar fractal subsets of $\mathbb{R}$ which have been shown to be Minkowski measurable if and only if they are nonlattice. This paper features a survey on the pertinent results of Lapidus and van Frankenhuijsen and a preliminary extension of the theory of complex dimensions to subsets of Euclidean space, with an emphasis on self-similar sets that satisfy various separation conditions. This extension is developed in the context of box-counting measurability, an analog of Minkowski measurability, which is shown to be characterized by complex dimensions under certain mild conditions.

Numerical Investigations of Discrete Scale Invariance in Fractals and Multifractal Measures

Abstract:Fractals and multifractals and their associated scaling laws provide a quantification of the complexity of a variety of scale invariant complex systems. Here, we focus on lattice multifractals which exhibit complex exponents associated with observable log-periodicity. We perform detailed numerical analyses of lattice multifractals and explain the origin of three different scaling regions found in the moments. A novel numerical approach is proposed to extract the log-frequencies. In the non-lattice case, there is no visible log-periodicity. i.e., no preferred scaling ratio since the set of complex exponents spreads irregularly within the complex plane. A non-lattice multifractal can be approximated by a sequence of lattice multifractals so that the sets of complex exponents of the lattice sequence converge to the set of complex exponents of the non-lattice one. An algorithm for the construction of the lattice sequence is proposed explicitly. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Metallic mean Wang tiles II: the dynamics of an aperiodic computer chip

Abstract:We consider a new family $(\mathcal{T}_n)_{n\geq1}$ of aperiodic sets of Wang tiles and we describe the dynamical properties of the set $\Omega_n$ of valid configurations $\mathbb{Z}^2\to\mathcal{T}_n$. The tiles can be defined as the different instances of a square shape computer chip whose inputs and outputs are 3-dimensional integer vectors. The family include the Ammann aperiodic set of 16 Wang tiles and gathers the hallmarks of other small aperiodic sets of Wang tiles. Notably, the tiles satisfy additive versions of equations verified by the Kari--Culik aperiodic sets of 14 and 13 Wang tiles. Also configurations in $\Omega_n$ are the codings of a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action on a 2-dimensional torus like the Jeandel--Rao aperiodic set of 11 Wang tiles. The family broadens the relation between quadratic integers and aperiodic tilings beyond the omnipresent golden ratio as the dynamics of $\Omega_n$ involves the positive root $\beta$ of the polynomial $x^2-nx-1$, also known as the $n$-th metallic mean. We show the existence of an almost one-to-one factor map $\Omega_n\to\mathbb{T}^2$ which commutes the shift action on $\Omega_n$ with horizontal and vertical translations by $\beta$ on $\mathbb{T}^2$. The factor map can be explicitely defined by the average of the top labels from the same row of tiles as in Kari and Culik examples. The proofs are based on the minimality of $\Omega_n$ (proved in a previous article) and a polygonal partition of $\mathbb{T}^2$ which we show is a Markov partition for the toral $\mathbb{Z}^2$-action. The partition and the sets of Wang tiles are symmetric which makes them, like Penrose tilings, worthy of investigation.

General fractals represented by $\mathcal{F}$-limit sets of compression maps

Abstract:In this article, we provide a simple and systematic way to represent general (inhomogeneous) fractals that may look different at different scales and places. By using set-valued compression maps, we express these general fractals as $\mathcal{F}$-limit sets, which are represented as sequences of points in a fixed parameterization space $M$. By choosing different types of sequences in $M$, we get various types of fractals: from self-simlilar to non self-similar, and from deterministic to random. The computational complexity of producing a general fractal is independent of the sequence in $M$, and as a result, is the same as that of an iterated function system obtained from a constant sequence. In the metric space setting, we also estimate the Hausdorff dimension of limit sets for collections of sets that do not necessarily satisfy the Moran structure conditions. In particular, we introduce the concept ``uniform covering condition" for the study of the lower bound of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set, and provide sufficient conditions for this condition. Specific examples (Cantor-like sets, Sierpiński-like Triangles, etc.) with the calculations of their corresponding Hausdorff dimensions are also studied.

Multifractal analysis of measures arising from random substitutions

Abstract:We study regularity properties of frequency measures arising from random substitutions, which are a generalisation of (deterministic) substitutions where the substituted image of each letter is chosen independently from a fixed finite set. In particular, for a natural class of such measures, we derive a closed-form analytic formula for the $L^q$-spectrum and prove that the multifractal formalism holds. This provides an interesting new class of measures satisfying the multifractal formalism. More generally, we establish results concerning the $L^q$-spectrum of a broad class of frequency measures. We introduce a new notion called the inflation word $L^q$-spectrum of a random substitution and show that this coincides with the $L^q$-spectrum of the corresponding frequency measure for all $q \geq 0$. As an application, we obtain closed-form formulas under separation conditions and recover known results for topological and measure theoretic entropy.

Abstract:The atomic structure of pure amorphous Re and Re-Tb amorphous alloys was studied by the molecular dynamics method. Analysis of the atomic structure of amorphous metals was performed within the framework of percolation theory and fractal geometry. The structure of amorphous metals consists of dense and sparse areas. We established that the dense areas form the fractal skeleton of an amorphous material. The distribution of clusters by size, the probability of an atom belonging to the largest cluster, the fractal dimensionality of the percolation cluster and the concentration dependence of the percolation radius were calculated. Correlation between some physical properties of amorphous metals and their cluster structure was established.

Abstract:By juxtaposing ideas from fractal geometry and dynamical systems, Furstenberg proposed a series of conjectures in the late 1960's that explore the relationship between digit expansions with respect to multiplicatively independent bases. In this work, we introduce and study — in the discrete context of the integers — analogs of some of the notions and results surrounding Furstenberg's work. In particular, we define a new class of fractal sets of integers that parallels the notion of ×r ‐invariant sets on the 1‐torus and investigate the additive and geometric independence between two such fractal sets when they are structured with respect to multiplicatively independent bases. Our main results in this direction parallel the works of Furstenberg, Hochman–Shmerkin, Shmerkin, Wu, and Lindenstrauss–Meiri–Peres and include: a classification of all subsets of the positive integers that are simultaneously ×r ‐ and ×s ‐invariant; integer analogs of two of Furstenberg's transversality conjectures pertaining to the dimensions of the intersection A∩B and the sumset A+B of ×r ‐ and ×s ‐invariant sets A and B when r and s are multiplicatively independent; and a description of the dimension of iterated sumsets A+A+⋯+A for any ×r ‐invariant set A . We achieve these results by combining ideas from fractal geometry and ergodic theory to build a bridge between the continuous and discrete regimes. For the transversality results, we rely heavily on quantitative bounds on the Lq ‐dimensions of projections of restricted digit Cantor measures obtained recently by Shmerkin. We end by outlining a number of open questions and directions regarding fractal subsets of the integers.

Abstract:This work is an analytical and numerical study of the composition of several fractals into one and of the relation between the composite dimension and the dimensions of the component fractals. In the case of composition of standard IFS with segments of equal size, the composite dimension can be expressed as a function of the component dimensions. But in the case of the compositions including component multifractals, the composite dimension cannot be expressed as explicit function of component dimensions and can only be solved numerically. An application of fractal composition to a physics problem within the incomplete statistics is discussed.
