Abstract:In this note we outline a way of computing the expected lenght of the Terracini scheme of a curve, when this scheme is expected to be finite and we give a closed formula for curves in $\p^4$. We also discuss the widely open case of varieties of higher dimension.

Abstract:We study subsets S of curves X whose double structure does not impose independent conditions to a linear series L, but there are divisors D in |L| singular at all points of S. These subsets form the Terracini loci of X. We investigate Terracini loci, with a special look towards their non-emptiness, mainly in the case of canonical curves, and in the case of space curves.

Abstract:We use the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula to calculate the Hirzebruch ?y genus Xy(S[n]), where S[n] is the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of a surface S. Combinatorial interpretation of the weights of the fixed points of the natural torus action on ( 2)[n] is used. This is the first step to prove a conjectural formula about the elliptic genus of the Hilbert schemes.

Abstract:In algebraic geometry there is a well-known categorical equivalence between the category of normal proper integral curves over a field $k$ and the category of finitely generated field extensions of $k$ of transcendence degree $1$. In this paper we generalize this equivalence to the category of normal quasi-compact universally closed separated integral $k$-schemes of dimension $1$ and the category of field extensions of $k$ of transcendence degree $1$. Our key technique are morphisms of finite expansion which can be considered as relaxation of morphisms of finite type. Since the schemes in the generalized category have many properties similar to normal proper integral curves, we call them normal integral universally closed curves over $k$.

Abstract:We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Göttsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Goettsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

Abstract:We introduce and study properties of the Terracini locus of projective varieties X, which is the locus of finite subsets S of X such that 2S fails to impose independent conditions to a linear system L. Terracini loci are relevant in the study of interpolation problems over double points in special position, but they also enter naturally in the study of special loci contained in secant varieties to projective varieties. We find some criteria which exclude that a set S belongs to the Terracini locus. Furthermore, in the case where X is a Veronese variety, we bound the dimension of the Terracini locus and we determine examples in which the locus has codimension 1 in the symmetric product of X.

Abstract:In this paper we prove that, for any $n\ge 3$, there exist infinitely many $r\in \N$ and for each of them a smooth, connected curve $C_r$ in $¶^r$ such that $C_r$ lies on exactly $n$ irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme $\hilb(¶^r)$. This is proven by reducing the problem to an analogous statement for the moduli of surfaces of general type.

Abstract:Let $C$ be a smooth curve. In this paper we investigate the geometric properties of the double nested Hilbert scheme of points on $C$, a moduli space introduced by the third author in the context of BPS invariants of local curves and sheaf counting on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We prove this moduli space is connected, reduced and of pure dimension; we list its components via an explicit combinatorial characterisation and we show they can be resolved, when singular, by products of symmetric products of $C$. We achieve this via a purely algebraic analysis of the factorisation properties of the monoid of reverse plane partitions. We discuss the (virtual) fundamental class of the moduli space, we describe the local equations cutting it inside a smooth ambient space, and finally we provide a closed formula for its motivic class in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.

Abstract:In this note we study numerically the combinatorics of curves and geodesics on the torus with one boundary component. A potential computational difficulty is avoided by counting inside specific orbits of the mapping class group up to a certain length, either geometric or combinatorial. Some cases are rigurolosly determined and the Euler totient function emerges. More complicated orbits are computed to suggest an array of formulae continuing to involve the Euler totient function. We formulate six precise conjectures. These include a novel study of an "inverse" function of the Mirzakhani's asymptotics. The geometric part of our study was motivated by the rationality aspect of these asymptotics.

Towards refined curve counting on the Enriques surface II: Motivic refinements

Abstract:We study the motivic Pandharipande-Thomas invariants of the Enriques Calabi-Yau threefolds in fiber curve classes by basic computations and analysis of a wallcrossing formula of Toda. Motivated by our results we conjecture a formula for the perverse Hodge numbers of the compactified Jacobian fibration of linar systems on Enriques surfaces in terms of its Betti numbers. This leads to an asymptotic for said Hodge numbers and raises questions about the behaviour of the extremal Hodge numbers.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,R}$ be the union of irreducible components of the Hilbert scheme whose general points parametrize smooth, irreducible, curves of degree $d$, genus $g$, which are non--degenerate in the projective space $\mathbb{P}^R$. Under some numerical assumptions on $d$, $g$ and $R$, we construct irreducible components of $\mathcal{I}_{d,g,R}$ other than the so-called {\em distinguished component}, dominating the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of smooth genus--$g$ curves, which are generically smooth and turn out to be of dimension higher than the expected one. The general point of any such a component corresponds to a curve $X \subset \mathbb{P}^R$ which is a suitable ramified $m$--cover of an irrational curve $Y \subset \mathbb{P}^{R-1}$, $m \geqslant 2$, lying in a surface cone over $Y$. The paper extends some of the results in previous papers of Y. Choi, H. Iliev, S. Kim (cf. [12,13] in Bibliography).

Abstract:We explain how we computed equations for all genus 4 curves defined of the field with 2 elements, up-to-isomorphism, and some of the data we obtained. We give descriptions also of nice models for genus 4 curves over characteristic 2 fields, in both the hyperelliptic case and the trigonal case.

Curve counting on the Enriques surface and the Klemm-Mariño formula

Abstract:We determine the Gromov-Witten invariants of the local Enriques surfaces for all genera and curve classes and prove the Klemm-Mariño formula. In particular, we show that the generating series of genus $1$ invariants of the Enriques surface is the Fourier expansion of a certain power of Borcherds automorphic form on the moduli space of Enriques surfaces. We also determine all Vafa-Witten invariants of the Enriques surface. The proof uses the correspondence between Gromov-Witten and Pandharipande-Thomas theory. On the Gromov-Witten side we prove the relative Gromov-Witten potentials of an elliptic Enriques surfaces are quasi-Jacobi forms and satisfy a holomorphic anomaly equation. On the sheaf side, we relate the Pandharipande-Thomas invariants of the Enriques-Calabi-Yau threefold in fiber classes to the $2$-dimensional Donaldson-Thomas invariants by a version of Toda's formula for local K3 surfaces. Altogether, we obtain sufficient modular constraints to determine all invariants from basic geometric computations.

Determining surfaces by short curves and applications

Abstract:The goal of this work is to give new quantitative results about the distribution of semi-arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces in the moduli space of closed hyperbolic surfaces. We show that two coverings of genus $g$ of a fixed arithmetic surface $S$ are $P(\frac{1}{g})$ apart from each other with respect to Teichmuller metric, where $P$ is a polynomial depending only on $S$ whose degree is universal. We also give a super-exponential upper bound for the number of semi-arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces with bounded genus, stretch and degree of invariant trace field, generalizing for this class similar well known bounds for arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces. In order to get these results we establish, for any closed hyperbolic surface $S$ with injectivity radius at least $s$, a parametrization of Teichmuller space by length functions whose values on $S$ are bounded by a linear function (with constants depending only on $s$) on the logarithmic of the genus of $S.$

Abstract:The $r$-th cactus variety of a subvariety $X$ in a projective space generalizes the $r$-th secant variety of $X$ and it is defined using linear spans of finite subschemes of $X$ of degree $r$. One of its original purposes was to study the vanishing sets of catalecticant minors. In this article, we equip the cactus variety with a scheme structure, via ``relative linear spans'' of families of finite schemes over a potentially non-reduced base. In this way, we are able to study the vanishing scheme of the catalecticant minors. For a sufficiently high degree Veronese variety, we show that $r$-th cactus scheme and the zero scheme of appropriate catalecticant minors agree on a dense open subset which is the complement of the $(r-1)$-th cactus variety (or scheme). This article is the first part of a series. In the follow-up, as an application, we can describe the singular locus of (in particular) secant varieties to high degree Veronese varieties in terms of singularities of the Hilbert scheme. We will also generalize the result to high degree Veronese reembeddings of other varieties and schemes.
