Abstract:Motivated by the theory of trapezoidal words, whose sequences of cardinality of factors by length are symmetric, we introduce a bivariate variant of this symmetry. We show that this symmetry characterizes Christoffel words, and establish other related results.

Abstract:By a Christoffel matrix we mean a $n\times n$ matrix corresponding to the lexicographic array of a Christoffel word of length $n.$ If $R$ is an integral domain, then the product of two Christoffel matrices over $R$ is commutative and is a Christoffel matrix over $R.$ Furthermore, if a Christoffel matrix over $R$ is invertible, then its inverse is a Christoffel matrix over $R.$ Consequently, the set $GC_n(R)$ of all $n\times n$ invertible Christoffel matrices over $R$ forms an abelian subgroup of $GL_n(R).$ The subset of $GC_n(R)$ consisting all invertible Christoffel matrices having some element $a$ on the diagonal and $b$ elsewhere (with $a,b \in R$ distinct) forms a subgroup $H$ of $GC_n(R).$ If $R$ is a field, then the quotient $GC_n(R)/H$ is isomorphic to $(\Z/nZ)^\times,$ the multiplicative group of integers modulo $n.$ It follows from this that for each finite field $F$ and each finite abelian group $G,$ there exists $n\geq 2$ and a faithful representation $G\rightarrow GL_n(F)$ consisting entirely of $n\times n$ (invertible) Christoffel matrices over $F.$ We compute the group $GC_n(\F_2)$ and show that $GC_n(\F_2) \simeq (\Z/nZ)^\times$ for $n$ odd. We define an associative and commutative binary operation on the set of all $\{0,1\}$-Christoffel words of length $n$ which in turn induces an associative and commutative binary operation on $\{0,1\}$-central words of length $n-2.$

Abstract:We show that some of the main structural constants for symmetric functions (Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, Kronecker coefficients, plethysm coefficients, and the Kostka--Foulkes polynomials) share symmetries related to the operations of taking complements with respect to rectangles and adding rectangles.

Monomial identities in the Weyl algebra

Abstract:Motivated by a question and some enumerative conjectures of Richard Stanley, we explore the equivalence classes of words in the Weyl algebra, $\mathbf{k} \left< D,U \mid DU - UD = 1 \right>$. We show that each class is generated by the swapping of adjacent *balanced subwords*, i.e., those which have the same number of $D$'s as $U$'s, and give several other characterizations. Armed with this we deduce a number of enumerative results about the number of such equivalence classes and their sizes. We extend these results to the class of $c$-Dyck words, where every prefix has at least $c$ times as many $U$'s as $D$'s. We also connect these results to previous work on bond percolation and rook theory, and generalize them to some other algebras.

Abstract:We say that two finite words $u$ and $v$ are abelian equivalent if and only if they have the same number of occurrences of each letter, or equivalently if they define the same Parikh vector. In this paper we investigate various abelian properties of words including abelian complexity, and abelian powers. We study the abelian complexity of the Thue-Morse word and the Tribonacci word, and answer an old question of G. Rauzy by exhibiting a class of words whose abelian complexity is everywhere equal to 3. We also investigate abelian repetitions in words and show that any infinite word with bounded abelian complexity contains abelian $k$-powers for every positive integer $k$.
Symmetric Word Equations in Two Positive Definite Letters

Abstract:A generalized word in two positive definite matrices A and B is a finite product of nonzero real powers of A and B. Symmetric words in positive definite A and B are positive definite, and so for fxed B, we can view a symmetric word, S(A,B), as a map from the set of positive definite matrices into itself. Given positive definite P, B, and a symmetric word, S(A,B), with positive powers of A, we defne a symmetric word equation as an equation of the form S(A,B) = P. Such an equation is solvable if there is always a positive definite solution A for any given B and P. We prove that all symmetric word equations are solvable. Applications of this fact, methods for solution, questions about unique solvability (injectivity), and generalizations are also discussed.

Enumeration and Structure of Trapezoidal Words

Abstract:Trapezoidal words are words having at most $n+1$ distinct factors of length $n$ for every $n\ge 0$. They therefore encompass finite Sturmian words. We give combinatorial characterizations of trapezoidal words and exhibit a formula for their enumeration. We then separate trapezoidal words into two disjoint classes: open and closed. A trapezoidal word is closed if it has a factor that occurs only as a prefix and as a suffix; otherwise it is open. We investigate open and closed trapezoidal words, in relation with their special factors. We prove that Sturmian palindromes are closed trapezoidal words and that a closed trapezoidal word is a Sturmian palindrome if and only if its longest repeated prefix is a palindrome. We also define a new class of words, \emph{semicentral words}, and show that they are characterized by the property that they can be written as $uxyu$, for a central word $u$ and two different letters $x,y$. Finally, we investigate the prefixes of the Fibonacci word with respect to the property of being open or closed trapezoidal words, and show that the sequence of open and closed prefixes of the Fibonacci word follows the Fibonacci sequence.

Binary Cyclotomic Polynomials: Representation via Words and Algorithms

Abstract:Cyclotomic polynomials are basic objects in Number Theory. Their properties depend on the number of distinct primes that intervene in the factorization of their order, and the binary case is thus the first nontrivial case. This paper sees the vector of coefficients of the polynomial as a word on a ternary alphabet $\{-1,0 ,+1\}$. It designs an efficient algorithm that computes a compact representation of this word. This algorithm is of linear time with respect to the size of the output, and, thus, optimal. This approach allows to recover known properties of coefficients of binary cyclotomic polynomials, and extends to the case of polynomials associated with numerical semi-groups of dimension 2.

Characterizations of Perfectly Clustering Words

Abstract:Perfectly clustering words are one of many possible generalizations of Christoffel words. In this article, we propose a factorization of a perfectly clustering word on a $n$ letters alphabet into a product of $n-1$ palindromes with a letter between each of them. This factorization allows us to generalize two combinatorial characterization of Christoffel words due to Pirillo (1999) and de Luca and Mignosi (1994).

Abstract:We provide a combinatorial interpretation of the symmetric function $\left.\Theta_{e_k}\Theta_{e_l}\nabla e_{n-k-l}\right|_{t=0}$ in terms of segmented Smirnov words. The motivation for this work is the study of a diagonal coinvariant ring with one set of commuting and two sets of anti-commuting variables, whose Frobenius characteristic is conjectured to be the symmetric function in question. Furthermore, this function is related to the Delta conjectures. Our work is a step towards a unified formulation of the two versions, as we prove a unified Delta theorem at $t=0$.

Non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_{1}$ as vector-valued polynomials Part 1: spherical functions

Abstract:We study non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_{1}$ by means of vector-valued and matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials. The interpretation as matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials yields a new expression of the non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_1$ in terms of the symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_{1}$. In this interpretation, the Cherednik operator, that has the non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials as eigenfunctions, corresponds to two shift operators for the symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_{1}$. We show that the non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_{1}$ with so-called geometric root multiplicities, interpreted as vector-valued polynomials, can be identified with spherical functions on the sphere $S^{2m+1}=\mathrm{Spin}(2m+2)/\mathrm{Spin}(2m+1)$ associated with the fundamental spin-representation of $\mathrm{Spin}(2m+1)$. The Cherednik operator corresponds to the Dirac operator for the spinors on $S^{2m+1}$ in this interpretation.

An Analysis of Symmetry in Quantitative Semantics

Abstract:In this paper, we build on a recent bicategorical model called thin spans of groupoids, introduced by Clairambault and Forest. Notably, thin spans feature a decomposition of symmetry into two sub-groupoids of polarized -- positive and negative -- symmetries. We first construct a variation of the original exponential of thin spans, based on sequences rather than families. Then we give a syntactic characterisation of the interpretation of simply-typed lambda-terms in thin spans, in terms of rigid intersection types and rigid resource terms. Finally, we formally relate thin spans with the weighted relational model and generalized species of structure. This allows us to show how some quantities in those models reflect polarized symmetries: in particular we show that the weighted relational model counts witnesses from generalized species of structure, divided by the cardinal of a group of positive symmetries.

A New Symmetric Function Identity With an Application to symmetric group character values

Abstract:Symmetric functions show up in several areas of mathematics including enumerative combinatorics and representation theory. Tewodros Amdeberhan conjectures equalities of $\Sigma_n$ characters sums over a new set called $Ev(\lambda)$. When investigating the alternating sum of characters for $Ev(\lambda)$ written in terms of the inner product of Schur functions and power sum symmetric functions, we found an equality between the alternating sum of power sum symmetric polynomials and a product of monomial symmetric polynomials. As a consequence, a special case of an alternating sum of $\Sigma_n$ characters over the set $Ev(\lambda)$ equals $0$.

Transition formulas for involution Schubert polynomials

Abstract:The orbits of the orthogonal and symplectic groups on the flag variety are in bijection, respectively, with the involutions and fixed-point-free involutions in the symmetric group $S_n$. Wyser and Yong have described polynomial representatives for the cohomology classes of the closures of these orbits, which we denote as $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (to be called involution Schubert polynomials) and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ (to be called fixed-point-free involution Schubert polynomials). Our main results are explicit formulas decomposing the product of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ (respectively, $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$) with any $y$-invariant linear polynomial as a linear combination of other involution Schubert polynomials. These identities serve as analogues of Lascoux and Schützenberger's transition formula for Schubert polynomials, and lead to a self-contained algebraic proof of the nontrivial equivalence of several definitions of $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}_y$ and $\hat{\mathfrak{S}}^{\tt FPF}_y$ appearing in the literature. Our formulas also imply combinatorial identities about involution words, certain variations of reduced words for involutions in $S_n$. We construct operators on involution words based on the Little map to prove these identities bijectively. The proofs of our main theorems depend on some new technical results, extending work of Incitti, about covering relations in the Bruhat order of $S_n$ restricted to involutions.

Abstract:The skew Schur functions admit many determinantal expressions. Chief among them are the (dual) Jacobi-Trudi formula and the Lascoux-Pragacz formula, which is a skew analogue of the Giambelli identity. Comparatively, the skew characters of the symplectic and orthogonal groups, also known as the skew symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, have received less attention in this direction. We establish analogues of the dual Jacobi-Trudi and Lascoux-Pragacz formulae for these characters. Our approach is entirely combinatorial, being based on lattice path descriptions of the tableaux models of Koike and Terada. Ordinary Jacobi-Trudi formulae are then derived in an algebraic manner from their duals.

Decompositions of packed words and self duality of Word Quasisymmetric Functions

Abstract:By Foissy's work, the bidendriform structure of the Word Quasisymmetric Functions Hopf algebra (WQSym) implies that it is isomorphic to its dual. However, the only known explicit isomorphism due to Vargas does not respect the bidendriform structure. This structure is entirely determined by so-called totally primitive elements (elements such that the two half-coproducts vanish). In this paper, we construct two bases indexed by two new combinatorial families called red (dual side) and blue (primal side) biplane forests in bijection with packed words. In those bases, primitive elements are indexed by biplane trees and totally primitive elements by a certain subset of trees. We carefully combine red and blue forests to get bicolored forests. A simple recoloring of the edges allows us to obtain the first explicit bidendriform automorphism of WQSym.

Abstract:We study non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_1$ by means of vector-valued and matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials. The interpretation as matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials allows us to introduce shift operators for the non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials. The shift operators are differential-reflection operators and we present four of these operators that are fundamental in the sense that they generate all shift operators. Moreover, the symmetrizations of these fundamental shift operators are the fundamental shift operators for the symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_1$. For the realization of non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_1$ as invariant $\mathbb{C}^2$-valued Laurent polynomials, we introduce a homomorphism that is analogous to the Harish-Chandra homomorphism for the symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_1$. For geometric root multiplicities, the non-symmetric Jacobi polynomials of type $BC_1$ can be interpreted as spherical functions and we show that our Harish-Chandra homomorphism in this context is related to the Lepowsky homomorphism via the radial part map.

Abstract:The method of symmetry reduction is systematically applied to derive several classes of invariant solutions for the generalized Weierstrass system inducing constant mean curvature surfaces and to the associated two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model. A classification of subgroups with generic orbits of codimension one of the Lie point symmetry group for these systems provides a tool for introducing symmetry variables and reduces the initial systems to different nonequivalent systems of ordinary differential equations. We perform a singularity analysis for them in order to establish whether these ordinary differential equations have the Painlevé property. These ordinary differential equations can then be transformed to standard forms and next solved in terms of elementary and Jacobi elliptic functions. This results in a large number of new solutions and in some cases new interesting constant mean curvature surfaces are found. Furthermore, this symmetry analysis is extended to include conditional symmetries by subjecting the original system to certain differential constraints. In this case, several new types of nonsplitting algebraic, trigonometric, and hyperbolic multisoliton solutions have been obtained in explicit form. Some physical interpretation of these results in the areas of fluid membranes, string theory, two-dimensionl gravity, and cosmology are given.
