Abstract:In the paper we propose certain conditions, relatively easy to verify, which ensure the central limit theorem for some general class of Markov chains. To justify the usefulness of our criterion, we further verify it for a particular discrete-time Markov dynamical system. From the application point of view, the examined system provides a useful tool in analysing the stochastic dynamics of gene expression in prokaryotes.

Abstract:Consider the class of (functions of) strictly stationary Markov chains in which (i) the second moments are finite and (ii) absolute regularity (beta-mixing) is satisfied with exponential mixing rate. For (functions of) Markov chains in that class that are also reversible, the central limit theorem holds, as a well known byproduct of results of Roberts, Rosenthal, and Tweedie in two papers in 1997 and 2001 involving reversible Markov chains. In contrast, for (functions of) Markov chains in that class that are not reversible, the central limit theorem may fail to hold, as is known from counterexamples, including ones with arbitrarily fast mixing rate (for absolute regularity). Here it will be shown that for Markov chains in that class that are reversible, the``borderline'' class of mixing rates (for absolute regularity) for the central limit theorem is in fact exponential. That will be shown here with a class of counterexamples: strictly stationary, countable-state Markov chains that are reversible, have finite second moments, and satisfy absolute regularity with mixing rates that can be arbitrarily close to (but not quite) exponential, but fail to satisfy the central limit theorem.

Abstract:We study limit theorems for partial sums of instantaneous functions of a homogeneous Markov chain on a general state space. The summands are heavy-tailed and the limits are stable distributions. The conditions imposed on the transition operator $P$ of the Markov chain ensure that the limit is the same as if the summands were independent. Such a~scheme admits a physical interpretation, as given in Jara et al. (Ann. Appl. Probab., 19 (2009), 2270--2300).

Abstract:We prove a central limit theorem for a class of additive processes that arise naturally in the theory of finite horizon Markov decision problems. The main theorem generalizes a classic result of Dobrushin (1956) for temporally non-homogeneous Markov chains, and the principal innovation is that here the summands are permitted to depend on both the current state and a bounded number of future states of the chain. We show through several examples that this added flexibility gives one a direct path to asymptotic normality of the optimal total reward of finite horizon Markov decision problems. The same examples also explain why such results are not easily obtained by alternative Markovian techniques such as enlargement of the state space.

Abstract:A central limit theorem is established for a sum of random variables belonging to a sequence of random fields. The fields are assumed to have zero mean conditional on the past history and to satisfy certain conditional $\alpha$-mixing conditions in space or time. Exploiting conditional centering and the space-time structure, the limiting normal distribution is obtained for increasing spatial domain, increasing length of the sequence, or both of these. The theorem is very well suited for establishing asymptotic normality in the context of unbiased estimating function inference for a wide range of space-time processes. This is pertinent given the abundance of space-time data. Two examples demonstrate the applicability of the theorem.

Abstract:We prove an invariance principle for non-stationary random processes and establish a rate of convergence under a new type of mixing condition. The dependence is exponentially decaying in the gap between the past and the future and is controlled by an assumption on the characteristic function of the finite dimensional increments of the process. The distinct feature of the new mixing condition is that the dependence increases exponentially in the dimension of the increments. The proposed mixing property is particularly suited for processes whose behavior can be described in terms of spectral properties of some related family of operators. Several examples are discussed. We also work out explicit expressions for the constants involved in the bounds. When applied to Markov chains our result specifies the dependence of the constants on the properties of the underlying Banach space and on the initial state of the chain.

Abstract:In this paper, we utilize the framework of Markov processes to attain a more probabilistic perspective on the theory of transfer operators. In doing so, we establish a functional central limit theorem (FLCT) for an $O(N)$ model associated with Dyson potential on the one-dimensional lattice. We also proof a FLCT on a non-compact alphabet setting, for a model associated with a Dyson type potential on the one-dimensional lattice. A Breimann ergodic theorem for equilibrium measures arising from the Ruelle Operator Formalism is proved. Furthermore, we obtain a qualitative criterion (strong transitivity) to determine when the conformal measure has full support. As an application, we show how to connect the Ruelle operator framework with the perspective of the Hopf theory of Markov Processes.

Abstract:We prove a multivariate central limit theorem for the numbers of critical points above a level with all possible indexes of a non-necessarily isotropic Gaussian random field. In particular, we discuss the non-degeneracy of the limit variance-covariance matrix. We extend, to the non-isotropic framework, known results by Estrade \& Le{ó}n and Nicolaescu for the Euler characteristic of an excursion set and for the total number of critical points of Gaussian random fields. Furthermore, we deduce the almost sure convergence of the normalized (by its mean) number of critical points above a level with any given index and, in particular, of the Euler characteristic of an excursion set. Abstract:We prove a functional limit theorem for Markov chains that, in each step, move up or down by a possibly state dependent constant with probability $1/2$, respectively. The theorem entails that the law of every one-dimensional regular continuous strong Markov process in natural scale can be approximated with such Markov chains arbitrarily well. The functional limit theorem applies, in particular, to Markov processes that cannot be characterized as solutions to stochastic differential equations. Our results allow to practically approximate such processes with irregular behavior; we illustrate this with Markov processes exhibiting sticky features, e.g., sticky Brownian motion and a Brownian motion slowed down on the Cantor set.
