Abstract:We explore the mechanism behind the anomalous rheology of puller-type microswimmer suspensions through direct hydrodynamic simulations. Our simulations demonstrate that swimmers' orientations near boundary walls predominantly control the overall swimming states and the resultant rheological properties. Hydrodynamic interactions due to specific flow fields characteristic of pullers cause the swimmers to line up vertically, particularly close to the walls where swimmer density peaks, enhancing the polar order of collective motion. Furthermore, the swimming directions near the walls depend significantly on the aspect ratio of the swimmer's body: rod-like swimmers tend to swim toward the flow direction, while swimmers with spherical bodies swim against the flow direction. The present results contrast with our previous simulations of suspensions of pusher-type swimmers, where weak orientation order in bulk regions determines the steady-state properties. Furthermore, these findings highlight that the rheological properties of active suspensions vary widely depending on the swimmers' properties, such as their shapes and swimming mechanisms.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the mechanism of the abnormal rheological properties of puller - type micro - swimmer suspensions. Specifically, the author studies the steady - state swimming characteristics of puller - type micro - swimmers and their related viscosity changes under different conditions through direct hydrodynamic simulations. ### Main problems and objectives 1. **Understanding the abnormal rheology of puller - type micro - swimmer suspensions**: Compared with passive suspensions, active suspensions exhibit unique rheological properties. For example, it has been experimentally observed that the viscosity of suspensions of puller - type micro - swimmers (such as *Chlamydomonas reinhardtii*) is significantly higher than that of suspensions of non - motile cells. The reasons for this abnormal phenomenon are not yet fully understood. 2. **Comparing the rheological behaviors of puller - type and pusher - type micro - swimmers**: Previous studies have mainly focused on pusher - type micro - swimmers (such as *E. coli*), and this study aims to compare the differences in their rheological characteristics under different conditions. Pusher - type micro - swimmers usually exhibit lower viscosities and even show superfluid states at low concentrations and shear rates. 3. **Investigating the influence of micro - swimmer shape and swimming mechanism on rheological properties**: By changing the aspect ratio of micro - swimmers, the author studies how their shape affects the viscosity and other rheological properties of the suspension. In particular, there are significant differences in the swimming directions and arrangements of rod - shaped and spherical micro - swimmers near the wall, and how these differences affect the overall rheological properties is an important issue. ### Research methods The author used a particle - based model to simulate the behavior of puller - type micro - swimmers of different shapes in shear flow. Hydrodynamic interactions (HIs) were considered in the model, and rheological properties were analyzed by calculating the stress tensor and viscosity. ### Key findings - **Behavior near the wall**: Puller - type micro - swimmers tend to be vertically aligned near the wall, especially in high - density areas, which enhances the polar order of collective motion. - **Shape - dependent swimming direction**: Rod - shaped micro - swimmers tend to swim along the flow direction, while spherical micro - swimmers tend to swim against the flow direction. This difference leads to different viscosity change trends. - **Comparison with pusher - type micro - swimmers**: The polar order and orientational order of puller - type micro - swimmers are more obvious near the wall and weaker in the bulk region. In contrast, the steady - state properties of pusher - type micro - swimmers are mainly determined by the weak orientational order in the bulk region. In summary, this study reveals the complex rheological behaviors in puller - type micro - swimmer suspensions and emphasizes the important influence of the shape and swimming mechanism of micro - swimmers on their rheological properties.
