Abstract:In this note, we examine the arrangements of lines and configurations of points that emerge from Fermat (von Dyck) and Komiya-Kuribayashi quartics. These quartics are characterized by having the maximum number of lines of maximal tangency, that is, lines for which the intersection multiplicity at the tangency point is equal to the degree of the curve. Additionally, we delve into the study of sextactic points on these quartics - points at which there exists a conic with the curve having a local intersection multiplicity of at least 6, which is one more than that observed at a general point - alongside the related configurations of conics.

Abstract:In the present note we study combinatorial and algebraic properties of cubic-line arrangements in the complex projective plane admitting nodes, ordinary triple and $A_{5}$ singular points. We deliver a Hirzebruch-type inequality for such arrangement and we study the freeness of such arrangements providing an almost complete classification.

Abstract:We show that even dimensional Fermat cubic hypersurfaces are rational over any field of characteristic different from three by producing explicit rational parametrizations given by polynomials of low degree. As a byproduct of our rationality constructions we get estimates on the number of their rational points over a number field, and a class of quadro-cubic Cremona correspondences of even dimensional projective spaces.

Abstract:We analyze the configurations of conics and lines on a special class of Kummer octic surfaces. In particular, we bound the number of conics by 176 and show that there is a unique surface with 176 conics, all irreducible: it admits a faithful action of one of the Mukai groups. Therefore, we also discuss conics and lines on Mukai surfaces: we discover a double plane (ramified at a smooth sextic curve) that contains 8,910 smooth conics.

Abstract:In the present paper, we revisit the geometry of smooth plane quartics and their bitangents from several perspectives. First, we study in detail the weak combinatorics of arrangements of bitangents associated with highly symmetric quartic curves. We consider quartic curves from the point of view of the order of their automorphism groups, in order to establish a lower bound on the number of quadruple intersection points for arrangements of bitangents associated with smooth plane quartics, which are smooth members of Ciani's pencil. We then construct new examples of $3$-syzygy reduced plane curves using smooth plane quartics and their bitangents.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Polynomial point counts and odd cohomology vanishing on moduli spaces of stable curves

Abstract:We compute the number of F_q-points on M_{4,n}, for n less than or equal to 3, and show that it is a polynomial in q, using a sieve based on Hasse-Weil zeta functions. As an application, we prove that the rational singular cohomology groups of moduli spaces of stable curves of genus g with n marked points vanish in all odd degrees less than or equal to 9, for all g and n. Both results confirm predictions of the Langlands program, via the conjectural correspondence with polarized algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of conductor 1, which are classified in low weight. Our vanishing result for odd cohomology resolves a problem posed by Arbarello and Cornalba in the 1990s.

Abstract:We define a combinatorial object that can be associated with any conic-line arrangement with ordinary quasi-homogeneous singularities, which we call the combinatorial Poincaré polynomial. We prove a Terao-type factorization statement on the splitting of such a polynomial over the rationals under the assumption that our conic-line arrangements are free. Then we focus on the so-called $d$-arrangements in the plane. In particular, we provide a combinatorial constraint for free $d$-arrangements admitting ordinary quasi-homogeneous singularities.

Abstract:We compute the fundamental group of the complement of each irreducible sextic of weight eight or nine (in a sense, the largest groups for irreducible sextics), as well as of 169 of their derivatives (both of and not of torus type). We also give a detailed geometric description of sextics of weight eight and nine and of their moduli spaces and compute their Alexander modules; the latter are shown to be free over an appropriate ring.

Abstract:In the present note we focus on conic line arrangements in the plane with quasihomogeneous ordinary singularities from the perspective of weak Ziegler pairs. The foundations of this article come from an active area of research devoted to the freeness and nearly freeness of curve arrangements in the complex projective plane and the socalled Numerical Terao s Conjecture. This conjecture boils down to a very fundamental problem in combinatorial algebraic geometry, namely whether the weak combinatorics of a given arrangement determines the freeness.

Abstract:We classify moduli spaces of arrangements of 10 lines with quadruple points. We show that moduli spaces of arrangements of 10 lines with quadruple points may consist of more than 2 disconnected components, namely 3 or 4 distinct points. We also present defining equations to those arrangements whose moduli spaces are still reducible after taking quotients of complex conjugations.

Abstract:In algebraic geometry, it is important to provide effective parametrizations for families of curves, both in theory and in practice. In this paper, we present such an effective parametrization for the moduli of genus-$5$ curves that are neither hyperelliptic nor trigonal. Subsequently, we construct an algorithm for a complete enumeration of non-special genus-$5$ curves having more rational points than a specified bound, where ``non-special curve'' means that the curve is non-hyperelliptic and non-trigonal with mild singularities of the associated sextic model that we propose. As a practical application, we implement this algorithm using the computer algebra system MAGMA, specifically for curves over the prime field of characteristic $3$.

Abstract:We describe explicit birational maps from some rational complete intersections of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^7$ to some prime Fano manifolds together with their Sarkisov decomposition via a single Secant Flop, allowing us to recover the cohomologically associated Castelnuovo surface of general type with $K^2=2$ and $\chi=4$ (the double cover of $\mathbb{P}^2$ ramified along the discriminant curve of the net of quadrics defining the complete intersection) as the minimal model of the non ruled irreducible component of the base locus of the inverse maps. In passing we also revisit and reformulate the results in [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1706.01371" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1706.01371">arXiv:1706.01371</a>] about the existence of infinitely many loci of rational complete intersection of three quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^7$ to produce explicitly some of these loci of low codimension together with many other irreducible unirational components of the Noether--Lefschetz locus.
