Abstract:The e-commerce systems are being tackled from commerce behavior and internet technologies. Therefore, trust aspect between buyer-seller transactions is a potential element which needs to be addressed in competitive e-commerce industry. The e-commerce industry is currently handling two different trust approaches. First approach consists on centralized mechanism where digital credentials/set of rules assembled, called Policy based trust mechanisms . Second approach consists on decentralized trust mechanisms where reputation, points assembled and shared, called Reputation based trust mechanisms. The difference between reputation and policy based trust mechanism will be analyzed and recommendations would be proposed to increase trust between buyer and seller in e-commerce industry. The integration of trust mechanism is proposed through mapping process, strength of one mechanism with the weakness of other. The proposed model for integrated mechanism will be presented and illustrated how the proposed model will be used in real world e-commerce industry.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper primarily explores the issue of trust between buyers and sellers in the e-commerce industry and proposes a new approach that combines Policy-based Trust Mechanisms and Reputation-based Trust Mechanisms. ### Research Background With the development of internet technology, the e-commerce industry has rapidly expanded, and customer-to-customer (C2C) transaction models, such as auction systems, have become increasingly popular. However, establishing trust between parties in this anonymous environment has become a challenge. Current e-commerce platforms mainly adopt two types of trust mechanisms: one is policy-based, relying on rules such as certification authorities and digital certificates; the other is reputation-based, relying on user reviews and feedback. ### Existing Problems - **Policy-based Trust Mechanisms** have the advantage of a strict certification process, but the disadvantage is that decisions are often binary (allow or deny), lacking flexibility. - **Reputation-based Trust Mechanisms** can make trust decisions based on users' personal experiences and other users' reviews, but they face issues such as fake reviews and duplicate registrations. ### Solution The paper proposes a method that integrates the two trust mechanisms, aiming to design a more robust comprehensive trust management model by identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each mechanism and utilizing this information. Specifically: 1. **Policy-based Verification Process**: Strengthen the initial verification phase to ensure the relevance and accuracy of registration information. 2. **Reputation-based Trust Mechanism**: Introduce a cross-rating system to ensure that both buyers and sellers can rate each other once after each transaction, enhancing the fairness of the system. 3. **Real-time Calculation**: Perform real-time trust value calculations based on factors such as product range, cost, and delivery time. ### Conclusion The comprehensive trust mechanism proposed in the paper aims to overcome the limitations of the existing two trust mechanisms by combining their advantages to enhance trust on e-commerce platforms, especially in better assessing the credibility of newly joined sellers.
